My wife has a VERY debilitating and violent form of alcoholism. I bet if this were still a current punishment, she would not have struggled with the addiction for as many years as she has. I love her, and also her relapses are very damaging to all aspects of her life and relationships.

When doing barrel rolls were much easier to do.
It was also used in the wild west period of American history. Only the barrel was smaller and the guy was usually stripped naked before being put in it. The punishment was usually reserved for gamblers rather than drunkards.

This still exists in some military branches. But the reason for wearing a barrel is mostly about uniform e.g. Your instructor isn't pleased with your dirty uniform.
