Pope Urban II orders the First Crusade (1095)

- In November 1095 the Pope, Urban II, held a speech at the Council of Clermont, calling for a war of liberation.
The war was to be waged by volunteers who vowed to fight.
By calling all Christians to war against the Muslims, so that they could help defend the Byzantine empire and potentially reclaim the Holy Land, he gave rise to the Crusades.

#1 Jerusalem fell to the Rashidun Caliphate more than four hundred years before the First Crusade.
#2 until the Byzantine-Seljuq Wars the conquest of the Levant was in no way more brutal than any other conquest of the period, the Jizya system put in place by the Rashidun Caliphate was frankly better treatment than religious minorities could expect in Europe during the same period.
#3 The First Crusade was instigated by Emperor Alexios Komnenos almost exclusively to stabilize his position as Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, when the "Princes Crusade" arrived at Constantinople he made sure that each of the principal commanders of the Crusade agreed to return all formerly Byzantine territory to the empire (which largely happened until the Siege of Antioch).
To renderer the Crusades down to a binary Christian VS Muslim series of events removes the fact that all of the major players were leaders of their respective states and had concerns other than faith. This line of thinking also excludes the Crusades launched against European Pagans, and other Christians (The Serbian Crusade , The Hussite Wars, the Albigensian Crusade ect).
And thus was born a 900 year old meme.

There are few animations and no references to videogames/pop culture like SH often include, but if you're serious about your history their research, the period artwork and maps used in the videos, and the narration are all first class 👌

The Holy Bible May preach peace, but when it is Christendom itself that is threatened, then it is every Christian’s duty to defend all that is holy. His Holiness the pope has called a crusade to reclaim the Holy Lands from the infidel who would deny Christian pilgrims their right to visit the holy places. It is time for the armies of Christendom to put aside their differences and unite under one banner, the sign of the cross, and give back to God’s children what is rightfully theirs. Or die trying.

HendrikdePendrik Religion tends towards violence once it gains power and authority. Early Christians, for example, were quite pacifistic in the face of persecution. Christianity by the schism was a quasi-governmental body, and had significant sway over European politics, warfare includes.
I cannot speak authoritatively on Islam, but the present day theocratic Islamic governments use their religious authority in a similar way to how medieval European kingdoms used the Church’s authority in politics and war.
Worry not. Nationalism and Islamophobia is increasing in Europe. Alternative for Germany very nearly won the Saxony and Brandenburg elections. Italy, Greece, Russia and UK acknowledge this threat. The Crusades will begin again.

Like this channel, the content is first class in its own right, and I admire how upon reading the comments you can see the content is being enjoyed by more and more kids, and those who ordinarily wouldn't enjoy history.
Simple History should really post more videos around this era. It is a fascinating time in our history.
I always had a feeling that Urban wanted to unite Europe from their infighting by the reminder they are Christians. As a Muslim the crusades always is an interesting topic considering most of time I see the European perspective and I think it is important to look at all aspects of an historic point or event. Funny enough the caliphate had the same problems of infighting with the Sunni majority and the Shia from the east had clashed a lot, I feel like a fact like that should be taken into account as the time I talk to others about the crusade many get the misinterpretation of Muslim unity.
