Otomo is the man. To think he and his staff drew Akira for a weekly magazine while directing the movie will always blow my mind. Thanks for all the Otomo content!
I was living in Tokyo when Akira volume #6 hit the stands in 1993. Even after 10 years on the stands, bookstores (REAL books stores not just manga shops) still had stacks of Akira front and center and pilled high. I had no knowledge of Otomo (and rudamentary Japanese) at the time but fell in love with his art. I still have all 6 volumes from then.
I'm just surprised that he was able to retain enough control over his own work to the point that he directed the adaptation of it. Never really heard of that before. Like, imagine if Todd McFarlane directed the Spawn movie in the 90s.
I guess Miyazaki pioneered it with his film adaptation of his manga Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. But yeah Otomo did both at the same time - that's just insane!
@@glitch3dout it goes back to early manga and anime with tezuka being heavily involved in the adaptation of his stuff since he loved Disney and based alot of his art on Disney films. Anime eyes are actually old Disney eyes.
I DO love that he was interviewed and you see his notebook and like... One paragraph of his notebook was a YEAR worth of Akira. But MAN, Akira really had such an amazing resurgence a few years ago (just before the Olympics) and I loved seeing the online art communities rediscover Akira and... ah man, i just love seeing Otomo getting seen again by a younger audience. Keeps it alive
This😱 man you’re both just killing it this has made my year. I can’t wait to watch it when I get home 🙏🏼 you guys so need to come to England next year, come to Thoughtbubble you’ll love it 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
This is absolutely why I been subscribed to you guys because it always about creating unique characters/stories and NOT cookie cutter formulas! I’ve been reading comics for quite awhile and I go with the familiar but also love discovering new things! If I stayed with just the big 2 I would have quit comic ages ago and the hell with that! Keep reading and making comix!👍🎯😎❤️
Would love for you guys to do a video and/or shoot interview with Joe Sacco. The beginning of this video reminded me of Sacco’s Great War book. Also Paying the Land is a masterwork of comics journalism.
I hadn't seen those photography experiments before. That mixed media aesthetic is prominent in a lot of the 90s anime shows with prominent Akira influence like Lain and Evangelion, but I wouldn't guessed that it was taken so directly from Otomo. Also, not a lot of westerners seem to be aware of it, but all the Tetsujin 28 references in the Domu/Akira universe are a pretty crazy rabbit hole to go down.
Really hope his enormous cache of untranslated stories will reach North America soon. I LOVE Memories and Fireball. Would be nice to get a clean HD copy of his feature World Apartment Horror as well. If you can find it, Sogo Ishii’s 1981 adaptation of his story Shuffle is phenomenal
I hope everyone enjoys the ART OF WALL, because the production and logistical aspects of it were…very challenging. Laying out dozens of pages of double-sided accordion stitched collage artwork is not something you do everyday.
Hey, Vincent, here's a video of my 1st round of book binding. I used the same technique (kettle stitch) for the new books in this Otomo interview. Good luck if you decide to bind some books! - JR ruclips.net/video/NmIzGcEua2c/видео.html
You guys should definitely review Black Canary Hero Worship by Byam, Von Eeden and Smith. Hopefully you find it interesting. I'll definitely keep an eye out for your books.
I have been trying to research this topic but figured someone here might have some good information. Is there any insurance or groups anyone recommend for covering comic book and comic art collections? I would greatly appreciate any recommendations!
I have some original Blain pages among other originals as an extra on my household insurance- they're just marked down the same as any other piece of fine art, but you need a recent market valuation for a lot of brokers.
The dark side of being a manga assistant is real. Would love to share some wild stories from Tetsuo Hara's studio.

He's the pinnacle of that 90s manga aesthetic

the best part of this video is that the vast majority is just video of tiny text. the content is that engaging. otomo is a tour de force.

Awesome stuff lads, Otomo had a big part in crafting my manga tastes so this is very much appreciated

In 2019 at the LA anime expo, Otomo announced an AKIRA TV series was in production. Haven't heard a word about it since though...
Really great listen, loved the insight you two added to the interview!

Excellent!
Otomo is definitely one of my favorite artists. Dude was influential, and was a workhorse to the extreme.
the serialization = patterns not stories analogy is gold

Did you work on the book?
Saving this for later. Otomo is a wonderous dragon among men.
Its that true that Otomo and Jodorowsky got together in japan, got drunk and Jodo help Otomo to figured out the final sequence for Akira?
Amazing my friends
Hey Jim, if you see this, do you think you could give some links or tips on the self book binding process?
