If it ends with diplomacy, then why listen to Merkel and walk away from Minsk? Why listen to Johnson and walk away from Istanbul? Sadly, as the US predicted when pushing for the current proxy war way back in 2019, eventually the war will end in a "disadvantageous peace settlement" for Ukraine. The US did achieve its goal to "increase the costs to Russia, in both blood and treasure." But only by have the risks it mentioned realized - "disproportionately large Ukrainian casualties, territorial losses, and refugee flows." See "Extending Russia Competing from Advantageous Ground" RAND 2019.
This war exists because russia has crossed the border to invade an other country. Just like in 2014, or in 2008 against Georgia. "Proxy war" my ***.
While war is a horrible and bloody thing, a russian occupation is far worse (as we have already seen on the liberated territories). This is why Ukrainians are fighting. This war will not end until russia retreats from Ukraine.
Firstly, Minsk was “agreed” upon at a time where Ukraine was in an extremely disadvantageous position. Several battles involving direct Russian support had tattered the Ukrainians. Provisions might have seemed reasonable, but their ordering of implementation was dictated by Moscow, despite their role as a “mediator”. Ukraine was given no mutual support for restoring basic security over its border before pushing local elections. We even saw violations by the separatists and the Russians at Donetsk Airport and Debaltseve, respectively. Minsk II was still around, but it was thanks to Russian escalation that it collapsed and we find ourselves at this current state of affairs.
Secondly, RAND is not the US government nor an agency affiliated with it. It’s a privately funded think tank that typically writes its analysis based on open-source information and weighs options of certain political decisions. There’s always risk with choices a government makes, but RAND isn’t the one making them.
Thirdly, I find it interesting that you conflate a benefit laid out by the RAND article, which again is not a government agency, as an explicit goal of the US government, while ignoring the rest of that same section. What about supporting the enforcement of the Budapest Memorandum? What about broader ramifications on US security partners if Washington were to leave Ukraine high and dry?
Overall, fail to recognize that the US has largely NOT had a strategy in Ukraine since 2013. While Russian meddling in post-Soviet states had been a concern since the collapse of the Soviet Union, US policy makers largely ignored these states in favor of cooperating with Moscow on issues like the global War on Terror. It was only after the Revolution of Dignity that Washington saw the danger of a Russian resurgence and a threat to broader European security. However, more concrete support in the form of large-scale lethal aid and security force assistance didn’t come to fruition until the lead-up to the conflict in 2021. While the US saw the conflict up to 2021 as regionally based and similar in nature to moves in Georgia, Russia had always seen the Orange Revolution and the Euromaidan as a direct threat to the Kremlin through “democratic contagion” via a large and well-connected neighbor. The actions of authoritarian states abroad are typically dictated by domestic demands at home.

Maybe he has good intentions, but he lacks a bit of self awareness and realpolitik. I think if had played both sides (being US-Nato & Russia), he could have had it all! But we find ourselves here, hundreds of thousands of dead Ukranians, a massive loss of territory, an obliterated economy.
