Having the worst day rn as my Macbook Air shut down this morning and wont turn on and I have a deadline this week with everything on my mac. After watching tons of vids today trying to fix my mac, I stumbled upon this vid even though I don’t have the tools or skills. Suchhh an entertaining vid you are so humble and funny! Made my day a bit.
I write software and don't fix hardware but I like Louis repair videos because I firmly believe that every problem has a root cause and you can work logically to find it and fix it. This and my job are the only few things in the world that still make sense.
I love that you are so real even when you tell people that they can buy from other companies, you deserve a sub
You make our days save our money. Show people the real path.
Thank you mr rossman.
Love from Japan.
Someone who sees a blown fuse and searches for WHY before replacing the fuse? Madness.
Yes troubleshooting is a lost art. I have seen people put in foil to replace fuses and say its ok since it works.
He'll also wait for the fuse to blow!
How else could you find the fault?
It's something which is discovered right at the beginning of the learning curve. Fuses are to protect everything between them and their supply voltage. If you don't look downstream and fix the fault, all you will do is blow another fuse. Or, worse, you'll blow more components downstream as well as the replacement fuse.
I'm a bit surprised that black sheep didn't check that the short to earth had gone before he powered up. I guess he has seen this fault many times and knows that it's a single component fault.
I've seen some "RUclips mechanics" use a thin speaker coil wire to jumper the fuze. lol While it may work it's not the safest or most elegant thing t do.
Also, I was wondering how come Louis never (or rarely) does any iPhone/Samsung/LG board repairs, which is usually the bulk of work most repair shop do?! Hmmmm
The first thing I think of when I see Louis Rossmann is *PPBUS underscore G3 Haa* I find my self repeating this phrase for no absolutely no reason. 🤷🏼♂️
he says PP a lot. I wonder how long a video of just pieces of videos of him saying PP would be if it was all put together
@@prjndigo It would be so long that you would definitely need to take a PP break.
I have absolutely no idea what Louis is talking about, but listening to him calms me. I said it before, Louis is the Bob Ross of board repair. 😊 I'm changing my band's name to PPBus and the Fluxxers ..
*hot* not haa
Those numbers just blow by my brain as meaningless mumbo-jumbo. lol Now if you said the power rail on a MacBook xxx model, well that's completely different. It's usually autistic people who remember such small details.
"Yeah, get wrecked adblock" - That had me chuckling.
Not me, that ad actually got me to download SponsorBlock. I like Louis but I HATE ads.

On a serious note your videos are very informative and nice to watch! Thank you!
It's amazing - the fuse actually did what it was supposed to.

Man, this is like Bob Ross... love to watch this and Louis his voice makes my brain very satisfied. AND we learn something.
I am very happy to see your progress finding a new space, and also very happy to see your work in the right to repair movement, but I really love the board repair videos. Thanks for another great repair video! Congrats on your first million subs! O7
man, ure my tech Bob Ross
greetings from germany
Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing all your knowledge !!!!
To repair electronic boards, one needs to understand basic electronic hardware, i.e., capacitors, semiconductor chip and the knowledge how to use and read the parameters shown by these equipments. Also, the knowledge of reading and interpreting schematic diagrams of the circuits boards is also necessary, Apart from that one needs to have an investigative drive to explore the possible issues that could have caused the problems int he board. This will be possible if you have a good amount of experience in doing these activities by trial and error.
Among many other things you don't even mention, you'll need a good brain, and at LEAST 1000 hours experience in one corner of the market, say macbooks or TV's, to have any chance of making a living at it. Trial and error will simply take too long to be of any use in a commercial setting.
Also, sharp eyes and a good sense of smell, often those 2 things will make everything else irrelevant by bringing you immediately to the failed component.
tasmedic what about good sense of smell?
Very nice content and superior video and audio quality. Easy to learn, easy to watch. What you do is so huge to us and that right to repair thing also. We love you man!
I just lost it at the "Get rekt adblock"

amazing software bro
thanks for supporting right to repair! techs without much soldering skill, (around here there are no solderers or motherboard testers), we only have part-swapping option and swapping out parts is cost prohibitive because of outrageous prices since they are all salvage because of apple's closely guarded part manufacture process, i presume
You will never see a tantalum capacitor in any piece of automotive electronics because of the ways in which they fail. Apple seems to like them quite a bit for some reason.
They have pros and cons like anything.
@@3nigma.3nc Pros: They break stuff, cons(pros for Apple): Makes consumer buy new items which break.
Love your work! awsome videos all the time, very educational...from South Africa
1:55 And here we see Louis offering a moment of silent prayer to the Patron Saint of Board Repair.... Paul Daniels.
How do you learn about all this as a complete beginner with no experience in engineering?
Wish you would zoom in more when you are testing components.
I love RapidCool® technology.
Another great and informative video; thank you.
do you have a theory why capacitors fail after liquid?
my first guess is like two caps connect together by liquid and over voltage a third cap.
My 2015 Air died after less than 3 years of use. The Apple service center would charge eye watering prices for it. A non-apple center just told me it had a "dead board" and I had to buy a new board which would cost almost the same as a new one, and that was the only other repair center in my area that had the chops to repair it. I was so dejected, it's now gathering dust in a corner. FML.

Yeah, I can see it! Paul and Louis as the uber jedi and apple as the sith lords...
Another damn shorted capacitor..... What the hell Apple make to those caps for them to commit suicide by Puuuffffff... lol Another successful repair hehe. Indeed, I DO learn something every time I watch your videos! Thanks for that
you are the bob ross of computer mechanics!
What’s going on boss, big fan of yalls work over there. I am a new RUclipsr that has ran into the same problem just yesterday as I was naming my video to post on my channel. I was wandering how much you guys would charge to diagnose and fix the problem.
Excellent intro, cool thx great job
Actually got fired for the only time in my life from an electronics factory... really a shame because they were starting to teach me how to do rework on SMT compnents like you showed in this video which I found tons of fun!
Good brother
Thank you so much ..
I'm kinda new to this channel and have only soldered larger items, e.g. headphone wires etc, so I'm a bit miffed. What does he pour over the board before soldering? I guess it might be liquid flux, but I'm a bit short on how it works.
ro4ers in answer to your question there...
1. A keen eye.
2. An attention to detail.
3. A whole lot of love.
4. And as you stated, Liquid flux....see 15:19
.. i'm spinning .. nice work!
Number 1. Thank you for sharing.
I would like to know if you clean the board after you repair it to get all the flux, yukky hairs, bugs and all the other gross things I see on the boards you repair. I often think you should be waring some kind of contamination suit while you work on them. Way to yukky for me. I watched a friend of mine who owns a Motorola repair facility that works on California Highway Patrol gear actually using a cleaner and a small brush to clean the boards. Please keep in mind this was twenty years ago before surface mounted components which I figure were more robust and could take the beating.
Thank you for your work.
Jay
Yes, he cleans the boards after repair. Uses a kind of steamer/ultrasonic machine or something. I haven’t a clue because it’s not my job but he talks about it in other videos and I think he sells the cleaning machines on his website.

Louis, Plug your PPBUS into Apple's PPBUS and shoot 50 volts into their "CPU"
unfortunately, that cpu is made from superconducting transparent aluminium. 50 volts wont hurt it...
a bunch of bullshit (should be obvious but still)...

When this video first came out, I'd take a shot every time he said PPBUS. The hospital said I'd never make it. Just got out.

Serious question: Why even have a fuse on the logic board if Apple refuses to repair a board and will only replace a board for $500 plus?
Even if you have a gurantee they wont replace it?
What temperature do you normally run your reflow gun at for this type of SMD removal?

Hey Louis! How much did this repair cost them?
Hello, nice work and I really love your videos.
I have a 2014 11” MacBook which I have been using since 2014 till date but a month back it ran out battery and it wouldn’t turn on so I tried everything including the disconnecting abs connecting the battery back until I did the smc reset which actually worked and it’s been working fine till 8 days back. The system was fully charged and I decided to shut it down because the airdrop was acting up. Ever since I shut it down it has refused to turn on or charge ( no light on MagSafe), tried different working chargers but it wouldn’t work on my system. Tried the smc reset, disconnecting the battery, touch pad flex and even removing the sscid and replacing back but nothing is happening. I am currently in Nigeria where there is no apple store and am scared to give it to some random repair guy cause they might cause more damage to the system.
Can you pls help give some clues as far what could cause the system to breakdown like this. And what hardwares or chips fault could result go this.
Thanks for your anticipated response
Olivia

How much is the fuse for a 2011 MacBook Air and a Capacitor "A1 V7"?
How much would a tech charge for this repair???
imagine a fuse doing its job in Apple product
Louis was a surgeon in a past life.
Does anyone know how Louis gets rid of that sticky mess that gets left behind by the flux?
I have seen him use a qtip, but what chemical does he use on them?
Isopropyl alcohol. Evaporates quickly.
Hey Louis, I just follow your method to check my 2011 MacBook Air A1369 and found out one of the fuse and a (A1 V7e) capacitor was burned, do you sell these two parts?
You love to say "PPBUS" and you know it!

That's weird, a fuse is blown.
Is it always that Cap or could it be one of the others in that area? I have a blown fuse but the caps look fine. I removed the same one you pulled and checked if it was shorted and it isn't.
Where can I purchase F7140 replacements thanks
How come the fuse blew? I thought they are the last thing to go in a macbook?
what you need is a "friend" that lives outside the US inside a country that doesnt have tariffs on goods, have THEM buy what you intend to sell, have it sent to them, then they send it to you. sure it is still going to cost more than it normally would but if you are buying enough quantity im sure it will still cost less then importing directly from china and paying the tariffs associated with such.. of course i could be wrong, but it might be worth looking into, like a mail forwarding service?
That's not a common failure.. That's a usual failure of this MacBook and I had already so many MacBooks with this failure.
I even once found few of these on my local recycling station and all had also the same problem + a lot of private data 😅
Luckily those machines were "Engineered by Crapple in California" ;)
What are they "getting at" with "A tree grows in Brooklyn"? They are saying that you live in a dystopian hell-scape, such that the presence of a single living tree is notable by its difference from the concrete, asphalt and steel.
most common failure: buying an apple product
Finally, someone who gets it. ;D

So tired of computer elitism. You’re just a child. All computers are pretty much the same, except that Macs run OSX, or Linux, or windows. You can run anything on it. That’s one reason why it’s a better choice than a PC, and it’s the right choice for a lot of people. Get over it.
