This video blows my mind every single time since years. I think it's a prime exemple of a band playing to perfection. Brecker just melts everything, Alphonso Johnson completely funks the place up, Robben Ford and George Duke are extra extra tight, and Erskine just lays down the bombastic New Orleans beats like nobody's business. Each fill, phrasing and musical idea instantly connects to another and the whole band is in the "zone" at the same time. Incredible.
I watched this video for this solo like a million times. RIP Micheal Becker my Idol and inspiration I wish I could have seen you at least once when I was younger.
In the last years always got my christmas gift a week of mike in NYC but seventh ave south third set always was the doom you always brought it all much so many good tunes "pointing at the moon"
ahh this was such a great time i love his riff at three mins in he always had fun laying down that funk in that time period i never got to sneak in city hall subway station album cover photo mike looks ghostly a good man was he Mike you will always bring me joy and meaning
god it's so good it hurts! I think michael brecker is one of the most overlooked MONSTER trumpet players of our time...i guess kind of hard to be recognized with randy on the same stage...god bless both brothers
I'm with you, usetheforce207. That's just full-on, mind-bending intensity as he blows though that section and the II-V-I's. Absolute clinic. What a great version of this.
I really agree with you. It was listening to Michael Brecker's tenor sax on "Sofa" from Frank Zappa's "Zappa In New York" that inspired me to take up the tenor sax in the first place. The man had real chops. And blow by blow among the best of the 20th century!
So sad to see that in a day in time when so much bullshit is covered in the media, no props were given to the most prolific tenor saxman in our time. Thanks for your dedication to expanding the voice of the saxophone Mike, love you man!
Gosh, Michael sounds just incredible, isn't he? I remember this was from "Aurex Jazz Festival" in Tokyo in the late 70's or early 80's. Aurex was an audio brand under Toshiba, and they organized the jazz festival for a few years, I remember. Obviously this take must have been televised in Japan, and also was included in an Aurex Jazz Festival LP, which I listened a lot. I think Benny Goodman also performed. The band swings so hard, and a credit for Randy for his incredible compositions!
"Alphonse" Mouzon is mainly a drummer although he does play quite a few instruments... "Alphonso" Johnson, pictured here is a bassist beyond compare!! ;-)
@sadizes It's a Guardala MB custom made for him. They were seriously like the best mouthpieces before Guardala got arrested. The mouthpieces under that same brand name aren't as good as the one he's playing.
Been a Brecker head since high school in 1998. This is my favorite solo of his. Raw power, raw youth, raw funk, raw love, pure technique.
Literally my favorite saxophone solo of all time.
Same.

Absolutely pure Brecker: that funk-drenched sound, the hip language, the heavy groove; a giant in the making
RIP George Duke and Michael Brecker......
I watched this video for this solo like a million times. RIP Micheal Becker my Idol and inspiration I wish I could have seen you at least once when I was younger.
Man, I can't believe you are gone...one of a kind. My favorite sax player of all time. Rest in Peace and God Bless you.
26 years ago... You can tell Michael Breckers lyrical lines are just starting to get put to the test. And is sax is conciderably shinnier :)
Truly the greatest of our time.
this clip is from the 1980 Aurex Jazz Festival in Japan. There is also a Japanese issue compliation CD that includes this cut. simply awesome!
I LOVE the little swing section near the end of Michael's solo.
Ballin'
I'd say. First time I've ever heard this tune and I damn near fell off my chair for moving to that fat groove. What a rhythm section.
I wish we could get a remaster of this.
Gotta love the Brecker Bros!
Spetaculare ! The Straphangin All Star
Don't understand how can someone dislike that!!
Michael Brecker is the best FUSION saxophonist of all time.
its like hip-hop but a jazzy version....so sick, and groovin'
The funk march is actually a quote from Albert Ayler's Ghosts.
I'm shocked too.
In the last years always got my christmas gift a week of mike in NYC but seventh ave south third set always was the doom you always brought it all much so many good tunes "pointing at the moon"
The intro is so crazy😂😂😂😂
Erskine is the MAN! Unbelievable. Sick. Awesome. Anyone who knocks him doesn't know a thing about drumming.
ahh this was such a great time i love his riff at three mins in he always had fun laying down that funk in that time period i never got to sneak in city hall subway station album cover photo mike looks ghostly a good man was he Mike you will always bring me joy and meaning
From 4:00 forward it's pure genius and mind-blowing style. I've listened to this clip dozens of times and I still just shake my head in amazement.
This track was released on LP/CD in Japan. Though difficult find it, it's worth to get.
I listen this video 20 times a day!!!!!
la cago, me fui con cuatica. lo mejor que he visto y vere en mi vida
peter erskine is a funky man
god it's so good it hurts! I think michael brecker is one of the most overlooked MONSTER trumpet players of our time...i guess kind of hard to be recognized with randy on the same stage...god bless both brothers
Michael Brecker, irremplazable!

R.I.P. Michael. Keep on goin' Randy!
I'm with you, usetheforce207. That's just full-on, mind-bending intensity as he blows though that section and the II-V-I's. Absolute clinic. What a great version of this.

Always loved this tune. Mike is burn'n as usual! Solo section reminds me of changes on the tune " Sunny" for a part of it

I got to hear them perform this at my school's evening of jazz. Awesome stuff.
ecoutez comment ça groove monstrueux !!! franchement pour l'époque, c'est ENORME !!
A chef-d’œuvre...Period!

Robben's moves are epic =p
Michael is amazing.
He is God.
Just when we thought he couldn't get any cooler, Mike is wearing jeans.
and Peter Erskine -drumms )))) awesome)))
R.I.P. Michael Brecker, you will be sorely missed
Is that the great Peter Erskine on drums?? God I love his enthusiastic style!
Brecker was a BAD man on the sax. All that soul. Sheesh.
so much soul!!
Playing this in my school's combo right now. Wonderful tune!! Great recording. :D AHH I JUST LOVE THIS!!
So sad to see that in a day in time when so much bullshit is covered in the media, no props were given to the most prolific tenor saxman in our time.
Thanks for your dedication to expanding the voice of the saxophone Mike, love you man!
cool - I love this - and its when they were much MUCH younger !

I love the chords in the maintheme.... wow...
Para la eternidad!
what a line up ! great clip ! is this concert avaible somewhere else in better video/audio quality ?
This is the ideal tenor sound to me
What. A. Lineup.
Truth....
This is so much better than the studio version- MIchael's solo is much more intense in this live version.
Mike still rules, such an energy in his playing...
I really feel sad about his passing away.
waouuuuuuuuuu !!!!!!! Mike is really the best !!
Excellent.
@saxylarry26
Somebody may have already replied to your question, but the album is Detente, produced by George Duke.
oh nice, I forgot that one! listen to that 80's chorus effect on the guitar, that has to be a JC 120!
thanks for posting, dynamite!
Altissimo!!
What a trip! I never knew Rooben Ford play with the BB's! Is that Alphonso Johnson on bass? If so, what ever happen to that guy?
Goodbye Michael. RIP love always
I love mike's run at 3.20!
Mike is so fierce, hard to fathom....
That is the most awsome shit i ve ever hear IN MY LIVE! WICKED

Erskine is somewhat overlooked, but he can do just about everything, and with great flair.
I wanna go on that ride again! heehehe
this video is so tight, the breckers are AMAZING!! do u happen to have the video of the brecker brothers doing "some day my prince will come"?
grooving!!!
Professor Micheal Brecker just gave his master class b@#ches.
Jesus Michael man
My bros, South Philly style!
I always think of Ghosts when I hear this. Maybe its' even closer to another Ayler tune? There is so much room to expand on Albert Ayler.
sick ass drumline :D
That is one big ass ride cymbal
Wow! I need to transcribe 4:03 to the end! Those are some great licks!
intro into the main riff :O blew my fuckin mind.
Is it just me or does Michael Brecker look very similar to Quentin Tarantino here? :D
KILLER groove btw.!
Badass!
whoa- I didn't know there was yellowjacket/weatherreport/gergeduke/breckerbros band.
"Alphonse" Mouzon is mainly a drummer although he does play quite a few instruments... "Alphonso" Johnson, pictured here is a bassist beyond compare!! ;-)
@womb0womb0 If somebody writes a line without lyrics using "I Got Rhythm" chord changes, would it be a song or a tune?
@theuntold90
I guess randy liked to sit back and chill while michael loved being a BEAST!
love them both but yeah Michael's solos are pretty epic :D
Who was the drummer? Looked like Peter erskine? They had Alphonso Johnson and George Duke too?
Great!! Any chance to get a better quality audio/video??
Just click the (more) button by the video description. It lists all of the players!
@sadizes It's a Guardala MB custom made for him. They were seriously like the best mouthpieces before Guardala got arrested. The mouthpieces under that same brand name aren't as good as the one he's playing.
素晴らしい
Was this a band put together for a few instances or did they tour more? I didn't know George Duke played in the Brecker Brothers.
