Imaginaerum tells the story of an elderly composer, Tom, who suffers from severe dementia. As he has had the disease for years and has regressed into childhood, he remembers practically nothing from his adult life. His music, friends, all his past including the memory of his daughter are a blur in his fragile mind. All he has left is the imagination of a ten year old boy. As he drifts away into coma, it seems impossible to get back what he has lost. Or is it?
The film is a journey between two different dimensions. Tom travels through his imaginary world seeking answers and finding memories, while his daughter, Gem, tries to recover the bond she had once shared with her father in the real world. As they have become more and more distant from each other over the years, and as there is even greater obstacles
separating them now, Tom's coma and his imminent death, Gem's project feels doomed to failure. However, through Tom's darkest secrets, Gem discovers the path she must follow in order to find her father again.
There are some questions we must ask ourselves before entering the world of Imaginaerum. What is most important in life? Can the power of memories protect us during our last moments? Will our imagination help us find the spark of life in the deepest darkness? Can we still find love after bitter forgiveness?
Imaginaerum is an emotional fantasy-adventure powered by the music of
Nightwish. The story reminds us of our childhood where the smallest but
most precious thing meant everything and losing it would have left an
everlasting scar. Now its time to reopen the wound and see what became
of it, but above all, where it came from.

I never knew this film existed and I love listening to nightwish.
I love how all the idiots who have absolutely no grasp or understanding of surrealist art and symbolism try to write off the movie as "bad", especially those who didn't even bother to watch it from beginning to end or skipped through scenes of the film like a confused child that can't comprehend adult literature.
This is not the best movie I've ever watched, but the concept, storytelling, and execution was exceptional, for such a small cast. It's overall a good film. The music was outstanding as well, but that goes without saying.
I doubt anyone would have taken Roger Ebert seriously if he had skipped out on critical parts of a movie before he submitted his critiques.
+Mikihara It's probably botted or faked reviews made by the same person to trash the movie that was good. You can notice a pattern in the comments if it's like a broken record that backs this up. We need to increase security on websites and go with captchas when commenting or something.

I've just watched it, I've been looking for a very long time in the version with a voiceover in my language And ahhh the chills won't go away so quickly and I know I'll watch it again soon! Do you know similar style productions? In addition to the "9"?

I just watched it and it was amazing
Four years ago. I remember having very low expectations when I read that "Nightwish was to make a movie" and then they hit me with this beast of a trailer. I was speechless. Yes, the flick's quite confusing and turbulent, but that's what it's about, enjoying the ride as rough as is gets and god fuck it, what a ride it was!
It's 2024 and I'm just reading an old article from Metal Hammer magazine that brought me here. I bought these records when they released, but I either forgot or never realized that Tuomas made an Imaginaerum movie. I have to find it now and check it out!
I'd watch this even if it wasn't a Nightwish project. Hell... I think I'll actually buy it.
It is such an amazing movie!! I cant stop watching it. Had to order it from finland where they are from but worth it. You dont even need to be a fan of them to enjoy the movie. They are in it a few times performing.
Awesome and beautiful movie, and NOT just only because of the NW songs. Quite underrated.

words cant even describe....very heart felt and touching story....had me in tears at the end.....being i nightwish fan i have to say they did make the best of it with the sound effects and all.....it gives you goosebumps when you listen on the speakers.....

I saw the movie in Finland on 10.11.2012! It is the best movie in history and worth every second. A deep story with so much emotions and epicness you will cry nearly during the second half of the film. This one has to be released in every country so far that has at least one Nightwishfan. Also I would like to see the DVD with a Video of the Concert from 10.11.2012 when it was shown to the world the very first time. I cry every time by just seeing this trailer so please. show mercy and release it
The production quality's out of this world compared to what I was expecting. So thrilling to hear Nightwish's music as an actual film score. Great stuff.

When the album came out last year, it was repeatedly stated that even though the movie and album were connected, the intention was for both to work as individual pieces. Hence the album AND the score.
I've watched this trailer about 10 times a day since it came out and I still get chills!
The track is called 'I Have To Let You Go' and yes it's based on the same song that you hear for the rest of the trailer.
I take it you're new to Nightwish... the album version of the track is called 'Last Ride of The Day'
it's a feature film based on and conceived with the Imaginaerum album. Petri Alanko (composer of the game Alan Wake) re-arranged all the Imaginaerum songs to fit a film score setting :) What you hear in the trailer is his score version of Last Ride of the Day

A fan showed the trailer to AMC Theathers and asked if they can show it. Someone from AMC responded saying they liked the trailer, enough to want I see it and will pass the idea along. Maybe if enough fans ask them they will show it! So let's all ask AMC to help show it in the USA!!!

I am in love with this whole concept! I always envisioned the album as something more than what it was. I see it as an epic film or even as an elaborate stage production with dance and a live orchestra! Can't wait to see the finished product!

This sound like a movie I want to see.
I think it's pretty rare that one would choose a metal musician to make film music, but there is a chance: maybe someone somewhere with a finger in the making of Dark Tower will watch Imaginaerum and think "Hey, what a good soundtrack." Although, it's pretty slim. I just want this movie to be everywhere. I live in Sweden and I thought that since Anette came from here I'd be on dry land, but here we are...

It was just AMAZING!! At first it was really difficult to follow because of the many unexplained details, but after a while all those pieces gathered into one massive mindblowing grand finale and then everything seemed clear and logical! I truly recommend this movie, it's art at it's best.

In an interview he actually said that this movie is not a bio of his life or anyone in the band. Is just a creation of his imagination and the director's. Is in this channel actually, if someone wants to check it out.

damn straight. they always act like she was nightwish from the beginning, but she wasn't. she may have helped shaped the sound of the earlier years, but nightwish has always been tuomas's baby, and it always will be
I don't blame you. I am a big fan of Quinn Lord, the actor who plays Tuomas. I think he is a beautiful child.

He's not being an egomaniac for putting his name on the composer with dementia, but for putting his name in a movie he wrote and alongside Whitman one of the best and well known poets in American history.
Roadtrip to canada!! Fortunately i'm in wisconsin and am more than willing to travel to canada to aquire this masterpiece. or maybe i'll just order it online.
If Anette was going to leave anyway, I wish she stayed until the premiere of this movie so she could sing at the full Imaginaerum concert. I hope she comes back at least for one last concert...

And as to the person/people who said it did terrible in Finland, it has only been released in Finland, it still has every other country they intend to release it in and DVD releases which is probably where they will make their money. It would really suck to see Nightwish fall due to not making anything off of this movie, but I am confident that it will do well.
