She doesn't have that generic, semi-operatic voice you find in most bands in this genre, and this is why I love her voice! It's almost sweet, which contrasts the heavy guitars perfectly!

I actually quite liked Anette. Yeah she didn't have the same haunting voice of Tarja, nor did she have the power of Floor, but she was the voice Nightwish needed for the songs they did with her. Without her I don't think Dark Passion Play or Imaginaerum would have worked as well as they did. That's 2 great albums and a brilliant film that I feel wouldn't have worked without her.
Tuomas is the soul of the band and he adapts to the singers, every singer Tarja, Annette and Floor, have the songs adapted to their voice, and that's why Nightwish is epic

It's because it's a first take that's why. All the energy is there and it sounds so genuine! Listen to the demo and you'll hear it's the same take!
This is Anette at her best! The comments on every Nightwish video seem to degenerate into fight about who has been the best female vocalist in Nightwish, but without comparisons, I just say that Anette is really good here, the pinnacle of her career with Nightwish (and I recall Tuomas also noting her efforts for this video).
I think that floor is better, just my opinion but anette was good too.

I think this song suits Anette perfectly. There will always be die-hard fans for each of the 3 singers but I never cease to be impressed by Tuomas' ability to write songs that seem to suit the relevanr singer perfectly! I honestly can't imagine Tarja or Floor singing this song any better than Anette does (and I prefer the style of those 2)...
All 3 are great singers but, as they have different styles, it's inevitable that the band's style as a whole will change to suit. I remain a big fan and embrace their changes across each album. Keep rocking.
+thecassman I'm going to take a minute to appreciate your comment, because I think too many fans focus too much on the female vocalists of the band. My personal preference is still Tarja, then Floor, and lastly Anette. It actually took me a few tries to get on the Anette bandwagon, but it's mostly because the "Nightwish" sound had changed, and it threw me off. That being said, it only made me respect Tuomas all the more because he, to your point, is skilled to the point that he adapted the bands sound to perfectly match the vocal style of every female vocalist they've had. Bravo Tuomas. You, my friend, ARE Nightwish.
honestly I think this is the only song I've heard floor sing that to me sis not fit BUT Floor kills my fave song on this album Last Ride of the Day......Floor does it amazingly
+thecassman I think, unfortunately for each of the singers, that Tuomas is really the heart of Nightwish's greatness. The singers all have amazing and unique voices but they are lifted to a whole other level when they sing the songs that Tuomas composes. That said, I just saw Floor live in concert with NW a few days ago and she was FIRE! She is so alive on stage and owns every song they do.

She nails this song... umm. That tends to happen when a song is exclusively tailored to the vocal and tonal capabilities of any said singer.
It's almost like two different songs between this one and Floor live. It's more whimsical with Anette, where as Floor plays to the fact this is the most sinister sounding riff this side of Mr. Scary, and fully plays to that like it's a taunt. Love em both, honestly.

Nah, after listening to various live versions and this, Floor adds a very fitting grit to some notes that ultimately make her voice fit WAAAY better, imo of course. The 3 singers have their own Flavor I guess, and we have our preferred styles. Floor is the best among the 3 for me not because of skill but because of how much she tries to play with her voice and change it. The other singers always seemed to play it safe, Floor took risks.
I love Tarja, Anette, and Floor. Nightwish will continue to make good music no matter what singer (:

Nightwish's lyrics, every one of them, really transport me to a magical world. I don't really pay attention to whether or not I relate to lyrics, but if they take me to another world then it's amazing.

I agree. Bashing Anette seems to be an activity that people who love Floor and Tarja (no offense to those people) are doing often. They don't understand that there are different voice types and styles of singing. Anette's voice happens to be lighter than Tarja's or Floor's and it doesn't make her voice weak, it's just different. I personally love Anette's voice the most out of the Nightwish singers, simply because with her, the vocals aren't in the absolute center, so the band can shine as whole.

I never hated on Annette. In fact I honestly believed she suited her purpose in Nightwish for the time she was there. It goes to show that Tuomas clearly showed his genius by writing 2 great albums for her singing style.

Absolutely, i listened to Floor singing this song and it just wasn't right... Floor doesn't have that kind of voice... Of course Anette also does not have the Floor's nor Tarja's voice and she couldn't sing songs where opera skilled voice was required, but noone can sing this song except from Anette

I believe that when all is said and done the two greatest Nightwish albums will have the common denominator that being Anette Olzon.She was superb for Nightwish and her ohohawohaohoh oh oh oh is my favourite Nightwish moment ever!!! Love Anette so much.
This is actually true by sales numbers. In fact if it were not for Dark Passion Play I highly doubt we would even know the name Nightwish today. In 2006 the entire world hated that man and that band and entire tours were cancelled and Halopainen sat in the every back of a room because he was terrified of all the death threats. I was personally introduced to them in 2008 when they made a surprise cameo appearance at PPUSA. As it turned out everything they did almost that year was a surprise and again due to all the death threats.
In fact at the time I met them they were on the fringe and about to break up. I was being used in those days as a consultant and it was arranged for me to be there and again later for an appearance at another Atlanta venue for my critical notation and advice. BUT I LOVED ANETTE OLZON and blogged everywhere what a peach of a woman she was and impossible to dislike. It started a movement of people actually giving her a chance and in the end Dark Passion Play became the single best selling NW album of all time with Imaginarium being 2nd.
Its of note that in 2018 when Olzon debuted with THE DARK ELEMENT that albums sales were higher than anything Nightwish had produced since Imaginarium. This genre is about genuine people and Anette Olzon is a genuine person. Even with Alyson Avenue that came through. To this day I am very proud that I had some small part in her getting that chance. You might have had to actually sat down directly across from her and eaten dinner together while talking about everything and sensing who she actually was to understand. Tarja can be cold and standoffish. Floor has this public face (all smiles) and this BITCH FACE she wears for most everyone else. (Sorry but its how she is). Maybe its the stress and pressure and ongoing BS of this business, but frankly if I was stuck on a desert island and it had to be with one of them...ANETTE WINS HANDS DOWN.

Man, it's crazy reading this. For me this song feels rather new, I remember it like yesterday when I first heard it when Imaginaerum was about to come out. It doesn't feel like it has been more than two years since this song came out and yet it's been a whole 9. And I am in my 20s now so It's not like I have known about NW for decades. Still, it's crazy how time flies but what's similar between you and me is the nostalgia that this song brings. I remember how nice it felt hearing it for the first time, this was the first new song from NW that I have ever heard since I started listening to them and it was a really magical experience that I still remember, 9 years later. I wish you all the best, keep rockin'!

I don't care what the haters say, I like Jansen. People need to get over it. Tarja is never coming back. Annette was decent, Jansen is pretty good too. All 3 brought their own dynamic to the group. Just because Tarja was the original doesn't mean she's the best. Personally I think all 3 did things the others could not and all 3 had some wonderful songs.

truebinx I actually heard the aggressive version Floor did 1st then when I heard this one I burst out laughing, not because Anette is a bad singer but the vocals are so soft it sounds silly, really doesn't fit the tone and pace of the music. Neither version is worse, its just each singer brings a different feel to a song.
truebinx I like a few of Tarja's songs but found that she often went so high pitched that it hurt my ears (my hearing is damaged so I'm more sensitive to some pitches than other people are). Annette got me into the band, I love her voice.
truebinx I like such a beautiful contrast - heavy music + soft feminine voice ...... I dont think about it as a "pop music" ... it rather brings my imagination to the dark middle ages with beautiful queens and princesses ... I think thats why they ve choosen Anette (cuz she didnt appear in the band out of blue of course) she was choosed because of this contrast.... this is an artistic metal... not stereotypical.... and they are and were experimenting..... they brought out of the Anette the best version of herself.... they made a brand new sound as a whole band having her in the ban.... However stereotypical metal fans didn get that.... so now, they introduced a more masculine and metalish woman which has a soft voice and can sing heavily too.... so they made a nice compromise within the band and the fans :) Floor is such a compromise...-shes got anything from everything. but she cant be completely Tarja, or completely Anette..... they were such a contrasting but both amazing in their own way....

Yes, each lead singer has their own style. But they're just the icing on the cake. The orchestra and metal provide an absolutely glorious moist, solid base layer, but leave enough airy moments for that fluffy icing layer to combine everything into a magnificent, delicious desert.
This is one song Floor can never truly own, Storytime belongs to Anette hands down

low roar I've loved NW since the 90's but most fans just like a certain era and run when a line-up changes. I didn't run when they 1st changed singers, but I did not enjoy the music that was written or Anette's voice as much but I still liked it. Then when I heard Elan I was like "oh hell yeah!" Well I actually broke down crying in joy and awe and sticking it on repeat daily for weeks but you get the idea.

OMG it seems like only yesterday when this previwe video debutted their highly publicised Imaginarium project. At the time it was SO far outside what I had expected from them I was disappointed. Now I can not get past it. Its REALLY good. Anette shined and outperformed every other gal in metal. Onstage performance is not just about singing, its about THEATER, and drama, and personality....OMG Anette totally nailed all that. I am now a HUGE fan and promoter of her superband = The Dark Element who is a month away from album 2 being released and I cant wait.

Such a underated song
Now that I've given this Imaginaerum a chance after a long time, it's difficult to pick a song I didn't like. Rest Calm, Slow, Love, Slow, The Crow, The Owl And The Dove, Storytime are among my favorites. I've been recently giving other post-Tarja albums a much overdue (I'm ashamed to say I haven't listened to Nightwish much since Tarja left) and deserved chance, especially the new one with Floor, and I just know I'll find ALL of them fascinating.
Every Era of Nightwish is really something. It's like getting over a nasty breakup and for the first time in a long while, finding love again and giving it another chance. xD It's now hard to say who the best thing that happened to Nightwish was. But if I had to choose one, it would be Tuomas and his creations.

Watching the imaginarium movie while tripping is still one of my favourite Nightwish moments.
This is Anette's one ... Her performance is breathtaking... I lIke all 3 of them but this one only belongs to Anette :-)

Annettes voice really is the only one which suits this music by Nightwish. At the time she was in the band her voice matched the music Toumas was writing perfectly.

What I love the most about Nightwish is that their songs are always open to infinite interpretations.
While growing up, this song has changed its meaning matching my own journey. I was 14 when it came out and it felt like this parallel universe where wonderful stories we got told when we were kids, hid something dark, equally magical but touching the veil of our own fears.
Today I'm 26, and this song feels like a space where our monsters, our shadows and ghouls can speak out loud, telling us there's something important to learn from them. Our shadow is our journey and our destination. It's a voice we keep silencing because we can't afford to let our egos know that we're all imperfect. Yet, that's the magic behind imperfections. When we notice our monsters, when we humbly accept their presence, we get a precious message about ourselves and we can continue our journey to become our own light.
Sorry...but there such a big difference in the quality of the singing between Annette and Floor, especially when you compare this song, it is unbelievable. The intensity and power of Floor`s voice is unrivaled to all the previous ladies. She took Nightwish to a complete new level.....

El disco Imaginaerum mostró la capacidad de esta mujer y el trabajo magnifico que puede hacer. :) igualmente estoy contenta de que la nueva vocalista pueda interpretar las canciones de la era Turunen y la era Olzon con tanta grandeza!
El problema de Floor es que no hay canción de sus discos que enganche como las de Tarja y Anette. Lamentablemente algo le pasa a Nightwish que en este nuevo disco Human::Nature como que se apagaron y de el anterior sólo la de The greatest show in the earth es de la talla de los anteriores discos. Entonces Floor sólo interpreta lo que sus antecesoras plasmaron con grandeza. Lástima por ella porque es extraordinaria cantante.

Да, ребята поистине волшебники. И то что они выдают на нам на сцене, - плоды трудов их и их команды, они рассказывают нам истории со сцены, делая это ярко и незабываемо, заставляя оживать наше воображение.

absojake I like Floor, but i dont think its "better" Original is Always the BEST!
rorevel I keep on going back and forth listening to both versions. It's just with this one they keep having to double track Annette's voice to accent it, while Floor can accent it by changing tone. Also in Floor's version, Floor can sing the part at 2:55 which Annette can't. Not to say Annette is bad, which is totally untrue. It's just that Nightwish has evolved to a point where it needs more vocal range and Annette is better served singing pop music.

From what I've heard, I personally prefer Floor to Annette and even Tarja. All 3 are brilliant singers, but each to their own I guess.
The song,the video.. just genius..
No matter how many times I watch, Anette's acting is amazing. Tarja is more operatic, and Annette has a musical theater or movie vibe. Maybe that's what's missing from Nightwish now.
I am so angry and pissed that they kicked out Annette, she is such a great and heartful singer!
Floor Jansen is good, but the magic and life of the songs with Annette Olzon is unreached.
There's something in this song. Lyrically, emotionally, I don't know.

2022: well after all these years I guess that the band and many listeners have been looking down on Anette from their royalty hights but the facts are that she perfectly sang two most successful and the best CDs. She's been amazing and she still is. I m very sorry she felt neglected and betrayed. Howsoever, misogyny is all around us. Still no one would sing this better. It passed the justice of times.
Misogyny? The other two singers that people fight over as being better than Anette are women. There’s not really much of an argument for misogyny; people are just assholes.
Anette is fantastic though.

Tarja's protected by her wealthy and powerful husband, Floor is their last option for good famale vocal which matches with NW music and also she had to plan her pregnancy due to NW tours and that is misogyny. I mean when your band mates call you fat while your're pregnant..Howsoever, I wrote what I wrote, that's my opinion. Not here for any further commens.
