Following Seas - Proxy Meshes and what is fun?

  • Few big changes this week.
I've reached the point where a basic game loop is possible. You can take on missions and complete them.
The ability for longer play sessions has shown me that there were a lot of little things adding up to prevent it from being much fun -- so my focus has been on improving these elements.
This means I've made the ships faster, improved handling, and made some edits to the geometry to improve visibility.
Currently islands are much closer together than they were -- this may change eventually -- but I aim to find some way to make the time spent at sea fun. I recognize that this is one of the biggest challenges of any pseudo realistic sailing game as there's always a bit of slowness involved. I've got some ideas.
A big visual change is proxy meshes for cloth objects. This allows for considerably greater detail on the sails, including thickness and better shader support.
I've also converted the caravel from tiller to whipstaff, as part of the changes to improve the player experience. You will have much better visibility now

Not having played the game yet, I can't really tell... But I really like the slower pace and (a bit more realism) over snappy turns and super speedy sailing. Love all the video's so far!

What could make traveling fun is possibly having to fish to feed yourself, treasure hunts and the random person to rescue or maybe even pirates one needs to avoid. Just my 2 cents looking forward to the development.

I’d like to see a galleon or frigate

Looking great. The fun is the elusive part. UI's are much improved, including the map/chart that you showed in your last video. Sorry I didn't reply to it directly. I'm trying to not spew a lot of ideas/advice at you :D You are doing and that is invaluable. Keep at it. I would like to ask though, is this intended to be a single player game or coop? Do you have upgrade paths for the ships planned?

Thanks for the comment. :) The game is single player only at this point. I would like to implement some form of upgrading for the ships -- but have not settled on how that would look, so far as being cosmetic only or something more in depth like what sailwind managed.

I think this is gonna be a really good game because belongs to a genre not so explored yet. The quest book looks intuitive and nice. But doesn't the ship feels like going too fast? I mean, sailwind for example is a pretty slow game when on a travel and there is not much to do during long journeys but still quite relaxing and enjoyable under my point of view.

Thanks for the comment. :) Speed may well be too much -- it's one of those things that I flip on a bit, but since it's easy to tweak I tend to make big changes and then dial in. I like Sailwind -- but an element the dev uses to fill out gameplay is the survival mechanics, and I'll admit I'm really not a fan of hunger and thirst bars, and don't intend to implement them so I've got to find something else to pad out the slow times.
One thing I've been working on in the background is some more horror type encounters. This is not a historical setting, so I want to add the ability to encounter strange and unpleasant things at sea. Should be ready to demo some of that stuff soon. I recognize that it's going to be a balancing act since a lot of people prefer 100% historical, while a lot also prefer a goofier POTC vibe.

Makes me think of sea of thieves with how quick they move now. Maybe best to get it in the players hands and then dial in.

I was hoping to get a demo out before the end of the year -- but probably won't make that. Definitely no substitute for player testing.

Just stumbled across this today. If you need any help spreading word, let me know. I'm a big Sailwind fan and have a channel dedicated to it, so this would fit right in with my channel!

That's awesome. Happy for any eyes -- though I definitely don't want to foster the impression I'm trying to take eyes off of Sailwind. I have great respect for the work Rawlion has put into their project.

The sea needs to be more blueey. Thanks

Thanks for the comment. :) I'm basing the water on the colder livelier seas like those on the Canadian west coast. Even on a full blue-skied day it's more of a grey-green than blue like you'd get in the Caribbean. At times it's almost black, and so full of particulates that you can't see more than a few inches into it.

Do you sail? if so what, if not why not, I wish i could but can not but am working on it. Do you still have the runabout

I've been to sea a fair bit when I was younger, but have never been lucky enough to be aboard a sailing boat. (At sea anyway.) I live in sw Manitoba, so even the biggest lakes within a few hours drive might as well be puddles. (That and I'm far from wealthy). I do still have the runabout, hoping to get her on the water soon. I hope you get the chance to sail.

@@2eightnine no need for a 100k yacht to injoy sailing and although blue water is a dream. I'm limited to a pond maybe 150 yards of water and with diy plywood boat I'll get on that water what 3d program do you use
