Welcome to the last video on this channel before Following Seas is in your hands. I anticipate that there will be a lot of questions, comments, criticisms and general discussion once the demo is released. Sandbox mode highly recommended! Every game like this should have a basic sandbox/freedom mode. Spawn and try ships, sink them for fun etc. Im so excited for this game. As fry from futurama would say "Shut up and take my money" lol Great job buddeh!
You're making my dream game brother, it looks AMAZING! I just wishlisted on Steam!
I have nothing to add except my admiration for the continuing work. This is EXACTLY one of the kind of games I’ve daydreamed about but don’t have the time or skill to build myself.
I've been dreaming about a realistic sailing sim! Could this be that? :P
I encourage you to try Sailwind before this comes out
hey this game looks really cool, I can't find it on steam, where did you get this game, I wanna play it
The game has not been released yet -- but there is a demo available with some of the content shown in this video. store.steampowered.com/app/2895440/Following_Seas/
Like many of us out there, played the demo and loved every seconds of it. Can’t wait for release on Steam. First min purchase, no doubt. And happy to read this is SP only 👍🏻
@@redguard2946 thank you 🙂
I'm happy about the single player only thing too. Multiplayer tends to ruin the games for those who enjoy playing alone.
QDM
Could You add a "map drawing" feature? I am thinking of a UI with stencils that could be used to plot a terrain and then have a visual filter to make it look like a "hand drawn map" ?
The video ended and then I got another 10 minutes of music. Very relaxing!
What do you mean? Did the video not play all the way through?
So beautiful ...
Hi Dev! When will be released?
Soon TM. Realistically mid 2025 is my target.
@@2eightnine Thanks! WISHLISTED! ❤
Please address the aliasing before it becomes harder to fix.
5:00: What you are trying to explain there is called a bearing, not the "reverse heading" 🙂 The ship has a heading, i.e. the direction the bow is pointing in, but when you are trying to assertain your ships position with the compass, it is called taking the bearing to x object. It can be fairly accurate, and is still used in modern navigation, although these days most of us gets the bearing off the ship's radar sets. Safe seas and following winds to all. Take care.
if dangerous encounters will be a thing, why not add ability to use canons then? Less for combat and more for deterrent
This is planned. Most of the ships other than the caravel already have spaces assigned for cannon.
say hoona its easier 😅
But hoogs is fun to say.
I think its a mistake to not make this at least fantasy lite, you can still make it realistic but the ocean is a big empty place and the same job day in and day out will get monotonousness, it can be as rare as you like though
the people demand a kraken
It is a fantasy setting actually -- it's just not a conventional 'pirate' setting, so there's no sea monsters or skeleton pirates -- but there are things that go bump in the night.
This is gonna be awesome!
Woah. This game looks sick. RUclips algorithm coming in clutch.
VR,?
God forbid!
It's on the wishlist -- but not a major focus at this time.
For what its worth, a simple fix for map could be "thought" numbers. The idea being that its okay if there are player info numbers *on* the physical map, so long as they visually track as being "in your head" Of course no issue with diff map either, but if you want to do another simple fix for zooming etc., you can use a fun cheat which is a *pile* of maps, and when you zoom out, you grab a new map, put it down, and now the map is zoomed out. Pan left? New map!
Maybe I'm thick, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by thought numbers?
@@2eightnine what he means is that you go all in on that the player has to read his instruments, remember, and mark the map. That the GUI elements that gives you hard numbers and that the map is auto marked and made into a gps map is not necessary. And perhaps not wanted. Why not go all in on the setting, eh?
Looks really interesting. I'm very hopeful. I hear the wind howling, the sails are reasonably full, though flapping around a bit and the craft appears to be achieving 1 or 2 knots at most. What was the wind strength during this clip please? How are the sailing physics coming along?
Hello
Is it me you're looking for?
@@2eightnine haha... 🤣
Are you planning on making it moltiplayer or is it gunna be singleplayer only?
Singleplayer only at this time.
Not really need another multi one. Love Single player game where for ones it is you in the game and one Els can alter or destroy your game.
@@rayhanvanbeelen9754 yeah I agree but it would still be nice to be able to chill with some friends on
@@russelladams9229 true for that, but let’s say Co op before anyone gets some wierd ideas 😊
Great job. Long time sailwind user. Really looking forward to this.
Great job.
Love the graphics and physics .hope it doesn't become a survival or combat game. Looking forward to sailing. Great job.
Thanks for the comment. Combat is planned -- but it's not expected to be a core part of the game. (There won't be big many ship battles or anything.) As far as survival I'm not personally a fan -- there is a provisioning and supply system, but it's more used to maintain the ship and fuel fast travel -- there are no hunger/thirst/sleep bars or anything like that.
Will there be naval combat eventually?
@@jamoser95 it's define planned, but a ways off
Thanks for the update.
Amazing sir ❤
My pc might be able to handle this game on medium graphics, just wish listed it. Great job mate!
Following the development with a passion. One thing graphically i wish it could improve is the volumetric clouds being quite weird, and the lighting and colors in different weather conditions to be a bit more natural - like in Sail the Seas the sunny weather really does feel sunny. This one tho looks so much better in storm, and the ships themselves, the ground objects & terrain you're leading the game here.
Thank you for the comment. Sky and weather has been a tough nut to crack. There's definitely an excessive bloom and haze happening currently -- trying to balance it to be less severe while still hiding the ocean culling as much as possible.
@@2eightnine I know, i've been spending a months on the lighting/colour/weather overhaul for one title not so long ago (and still plan to get back to it, since i'm not fully happy with it). I think with current haze distance it still might work on some sunny cloudless weather - just the color of the haze needs to be a tad more reddish perhaps, for the daytime, and what really seems out of place currently is the darkness and lack of vibrance in the atmosphere gradient now. For example, the bottoms of volumetric clouds and the atmosphere gradient are very similar colours, and sometimes it's hard to distinguish what is a part of cloud and what is the gradient behind it. But on the other hand the way those colors are chosen, are working well together with ships and lighting, and i know how can that be, you tweak one thing and everything starts falling apart.
Xebec is the most beautiful rigging well suited for Mediterranean.
Are you planning on adding any square rigged vessels? Also the game is really looking good and im excited to see where you end up taking it
It will likely happen at some point, but isn't a priority. Most likely will first be seen as rigging variations for ships, i.e. the Xebec with a mix of square and lateen sails. There won't be any full rigged tallships however, as the sailing system I've set up isn't really practical for a very large number of sails.
Is multiplayer planned for this game? And will there be combat aswell.
Multiplayer is not planned. I do plan on some combat elements, but have yet to settle on exactly how I intend to implement.
Looks awesome already, and the Xebec always having been a favorite. More people need to see this!
Love this game, I suck at it. Still love it. Looking forward to seeing more of your work. I hope you wind up making it multiplayer so I can shanghi some friends.
I always wanted a realistic sailing game with 15th to 17th centuries ships. So far, judging from this video alone, you have made significant progress and this looks promising. I will be rooting for you
I steel would kinda prefer customization akin Sailwind to trade for the detail and graphics. I think, people might get bored with the same hull and cabins, and ropes. Carpenters job would be cool, trimming of the sails, trimming of the ship, advanced buoyancy model would be a better contribution to gameplay. And the most important thing: perception. POV and External View distort the perspective. In reality you feel the speed of motion, you feel the orientation, you feel the acceleration of the course with abrupt yaw. There should be a better way to convey those feeling of space, time and force in a videogame. Sailwind promised virtual relatity. But they never deliverd, nor is it a full answer to the question.
Looks good, be nice to see some realistic sailing physics and changing winds and weather 👌 will follow the progress👍
Brendan, this just keeps looking better and better! I am really impressed at how diverse your skillset is. From the "art" assets to the physics modeling, to the game mechanics and world building, you are truly a modern renaissance man. Anyway it all looks to be coming together wonderfully. Really looking forward to escaping into this universe. I hope your unemployed status is short. I would think that someone with your talents will land on his feet. Personally, I've found that being forced onto the job market, while not fun, often leads to better opportunities. Best of luck
Thank you for the comments. Here's hoping.
Great work, very nice looking ship. I can't wait to sail in this.
Good idea and implementation. Take care of Youself and good luck with this project. Definitely buy it.
Oh my god this looks really good and exactly like a game I always wanted. Best of luck with development and fair winds, brother! Edit: A little criticism for the shipyard's plans, which already look really freaking cool: Make it so the side view is aligned to the water line and not the keel, so you can better imagine what it'll look like. Also add the waterline as a dashed line. I'd want that as a player. Thank you for sharing your progress!
Good thought -- will look at adding this.
@@2eightnine Awesome, thanks! :)
Estoy descargando la demo de Steam , a ver que tal . Saludos.
I haven't played a naval game since 'Naval Action' on steam. Your work looks amazing keep it up. I'd love to help support this! Is there a kickstarter?
No kickstarter planned at this time. I'm a solo dev and there's frankly too much that could go wrong, I never want to be in a position where I take a bunch of funds and become unable to continue a project. I would like to find a means of funding, but given the niche nature of the game and a relatively precarious professional situation for me I'm not sure what options are available short of getting to mvp and releasing to EA.
very cool, I'll have to give it another look : )
This game is getting better and better. Keep it up. Looking forward to it. 👍
I find the ship will be sailing along happily then it would just stop... The wind drops and I have to wait for the wind to pick up again.. I have waited sometimes for 20+ minutes for it to pick up.. I think this need to be addressed. Less waiting and more sailing. I hope your personal concerns work out and I wish you all the best and I understand that it is a priority to sort that out first.. Love the work you have been doing and love your ideas for this game..
Interesting -- was this early on or under the more current patch? There was a bug for a while that could cause random stops -- but the wind should never be 0 in any build. It can wildly swing direction, but the actual wind value is always between 3-14 in the demo -- might be a bug but hard to pin down.
@@2eightnine it has been a while since I played so I am not 100% sure if it was the latest patch or the one before but I defiantly experienced it after the issue was raised. Sometimes it is hard to tell if the ship is moving for the bow wave and wake isn't present on the outside view but can see some white wash when viewing from inside the ship. But saying that I had a go yesterday and made it from Bathis to the watchers non stop. I will have a few more goes and keep you informed.
I am definitely following this.
more sunshine brighter blue skys...
So much this, vibrant colors are so important for sea based games.
@@ArkhBaegor We don't need all ship games based in the Carribean. I think the muted Atlantic feel is refreshing.
This is my aim. I grew up on the northwest Pacific, and the seas there are generally green-gray, and rarely is the horizon clear. Loads of foam, and cold cloudy water is the norm.
Not everything has to Look like wow
what is wow?... I said more blue sky not another game or place... There is alot of overcast which might change when he gets the weather put in I just said it would be nice to see bright blue skys but I like rain and clouds too... and a stronger horizon line because the distance adds weight to the image it makes it stronger... It sells the distance better... but none of that is asking him to make another game or a different game... Also I assumed he h is posting here to be part of a conversation if that is not the case I apologize...
Also your game is beautiful and the update to 34 inch widescreen is greatly appreciated... Thank you
