5:55 calibrated doesn't automaticaly mean, it looks good 🤦🏼♂. It just means that it's calibrated, which makes a pretty dimm display and non-poping colors since it's made for dark enviroments. Don't let this guy fool you into calibrating your TV. Just set the picture to what you like the most and looks good for you.
@__Mr.White__ It's unclear what YOUR motive is here but, I, for one, am not trying to "fool" anyone, nor do I suggest that you MUST calibrate this or any TV. This is a review; whether you prefer to set your TV in one of the preset profiles or want to adjust the display to your liking, there are standards of calibration and accuracy that can be measured and identified. Providing this information is part of my job as a reviewer. If you prefer a different look for your TV, by all means, do as you wish.
Hi Andrew and Kristi. Seems actually shocking that Samsung is asking $15K for this TV in 2024! Maybe a couple of years ago that price might have been "reasonable" at this screen size, but the prices have dropped dramatically in today's TV market. At that price frankly, anything less than near perfection is unacceptable! Thanks for the comprehensive review and looking forward to Friday.
Yeah, I sort of did a double-take when I saw the price, too, especially considering that miniLED TVs that are 98 inches in size are routinely priced below $5K now. I expect perfection when a TV is the price of a small or used car.
Great review and sadly confirms my bias against Samsung. I used to be a huge Samsung fan back in the day(shout out to the ol' KS8000) but have become a Sony convert. Currently a happy owner of 65" x950H, 75" x90L and 77" a80J. I really dislike Tizen OS, being able to put Sony TVs into 'apps only mode' is another nice benefit I don't see discussed much. Completey gets rid of ads and suggested content. I just talked my buddy out of a 65" Q90D and into 65" x93L. He saved some money and although he didn't do a side by side comparison in his home, he is very happy he got the x93L.
Loved the honest review. Both the good and the bad well explained. I hope that Samsung takes this opportunity to step up their quality improvement. I hope they don't shoot the messenger as your observations are fully legit. Take care guys.
The 900D was a horrible experience, and I don't like that Samsung sort of ghosted us on getting us an appropriate replacement, so we could bring you that review rather than include it as part of this one.
This guy is the best when it comes to tv reviews. You walk around everyone. I would like to say, wait for the S90E with QD-OLED gen 3 or choose the s95d and suffer with mate screen. Big jump in brightness
Plasmas.... I designed a trade show for Sony in the mid 90's that featured their plasma screen technology. It took a room full of gear to drive a small "plasmatron" screen (24" perhaps) with additional air conditioning required for its tech space. It was, at the time, the most amazing thing I had ever seen screenwise and resolution. How far things have come.
Bought an end of line Samsung QN90C a few weeks ago... talk about buyer's remorse! So many problems... audio issues, hdmi switching issues, the most painful, frustrating and slow setup (as a first time Samsungite), UI operability issues... and worst of all TERRIBLE motion processing (I mean REALLY bad). Bought it as it was recommended by respectable sources (ahem, Caleb!). Back to the shop it went and replaced with an LG 55QNED866RE I am now a calmer and happier man 🙂
I do still have the 85in qn90a and I love this tv. I will say I am disappointed if I ever wanted the qn90d. Maybe the next year if Samsung came fix this. I wonder say I wouldn’t mind the moving to Sony QLED. But we’ll see. Good honest review sir 👍🏼
I'm a Sony, Samsung, & LG dealer and have owned a AV custom integration firm for 20 years..... Samsungs are my LEAST favorite TV to work with. Their software & eArc implementation is AWFUL. Their updates often reset or outright just break settings that worked fine previously.... sometimes it's several months wait for fixes. eArc is particularly nasty with certain receivers (Yamaha in particular) I cringe when we sell Samsungs into jobs (typically we do thisnonly if there is going to be a glare problem with natural light - their screens are by far the best at dissipation of screen glare). I know it's going to be a long term dog fight. LG is the best TV all things considered, IMO. For the cost, I also like the 100" 8k Hisense and some of the nicer TLC stuff. I have dealt with, sold, & installed it all at this stage in my career.
LG and Sony have been rock-solid for us over the years. Samsung used to be part of that group, but it's gotten weird in the last two to maybe three years. Hisense is also acting up a lot more lately. TCL has been solid so long as you buy upmarket.
Thank you for clearly demonstrating the processing and local dimming issues you were seeing rather than just describing them. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Please continue this style of review in your future TV reviews. Looking forward to seeing your TCL review. TCL TVs also tend to suffer from various local dimming issues such as backlight instability/fluctuations in dim content, poor HDR EOTF tracking with varying content APL, black crush, etc.
I actually had a complete video of the Bridgerton scenes but Netflix kept flagging its usage which is why I had to use still images. It was wild to see in motion.
That blooming is atrocious! But for anyone who was/is looking at the smaller variants - I can say that my 43” QN90D has been pretty fantastic with no noticeable blooming/local dimming shenanigans. For reference I’m using mine as a mixed usage PC monitor and regular TV that’s connected to an Apple TV. Only complaint I have about it is that there’s some black smearing when gaming when compared to my old ACER IPS gaming monitor. Apart from that: me = happy chappy.

I'm not surprised your 43" performs better. It doesn't require the processing power needed for something this size (98"). It's also likely that the TVs aren't remotely close to the same despite being in the same series.

My biggest issues with Samsung is software, it's totally kills it for me. Those "fancy features" are where they always fall flat on their face. In terms of image, my money still goes to Samsung if you can just get over their terrible buggy software. As a hardware company (phones included) they are class leading, but in terms of software it dramatically holds them back. SAMSUNG needs to step up its focus there. Additionally, it makes me sad that in 2024 we're still having issues with local dimming. "not today Satan" made my week, hope you both have a great one, see you friday.
Have had a Samsung 75” QN90A for a few years and just love it. Great picture for us. Just how good does a TV have to get before you can say, this is the end of the line and next is real life?
Well, the answer is in your question. QN90A it was, which is 2021 model. Most of the models after that gets downgraded every year, probably because of cost cutting.
@@keithzastrow It really is. Samsung's build quality, OS, and hardware are crap now compared to what it used to be. I had to return *2* QN90D's! The first one had a panel which was so uneven, so bent that when I texted the photo to Samsung customer service they told me to ask for an exchange from the retailer ASAP. The second one had multiple, large clusters of dead pixels all over the screen. The Sony Bravia 9? No dead pixels, Perfect panel shape, first time around. Maybe paying less and getting crap is OK for you, it isn't for me. My hard earned money is going towards something that is worth it, not shoddy crap.
@rsr789 I've yet to read a single post on RUclips from someone who wasn't just over the moon happy with their QN90C especially from someone who got it in a larger size like I will be. I'm sticking with my plan to get it in the 85" size come November.

@@rsr789 QN90C. I'm not about to pay the $$$ for a D model when I can get the C for under $1900 in the 85" size. And I am not going by just RUclips comments lol. All of the issues I have seen with the C model are from the smaller screen sizes. I have yet to hear/read any issues with the 85" size. Also, keep in mind I will be upgrading from a 65" Sharp Aquos. Smart TVs were even invented when I got that TV lol. I'm pretty sure I'll be over the moon happy with this QN90C.
When looking at a 98-inch Q80C at Best Buy, after a few minutes my eyes begin to hurt. I noticed this even on smaller models. I'm hoping the eye-burning brightness can be calibrated and adjusted. This is why I'm leaning towards an X90L 98-inch with Full-array as my preference. Although I did experience similar eye strain when viewing the new Bravia 9 on an 85-inch. I ultimately do prefer the 97-inch LG G2 as there is no strain with OLED. But that is a tough pill to swallow even if on sale for $15K. Great review as always!
TVs are put into "store mode" when on display at retailers like BB in order to look bright and colorful in those large spaces. Bright and colorful sells. Placing any TV in its movie or filmmaker mode typically results in a more natural and thus, less bright image.
Hey Andrew, Thanks for the review. I am currently deciding between the Qn90D and the Bravia 9, which are both in my home atm, and the only word I have for the 90D is, "disappointed". It's an ok tv but for 3000 dollars it's totally not worth it, imo. I was unimpressed with its overall brightness in both SDR and HDR and, as you said in this review, the image can at times be great and at other times be really disappointing. I watch a lot of SDR content in 1080p and I agree too, the upscaling is really inconsistent and overall, just doesn't look that great. In comparison with the Bravia 9, the B9 blows it out of the water in every single way and yet it's only 500 dollars more. I honestly expected a lot more from Samsung.
Here in Dubai, UAE 🇦🇪 98” Q80C is selling for approx 3.5k -4k 😂 And the 98” inches DU9000 is launched at the same price, and I believe in few months it could dropped down to 2.5k to 3k.
Thank you for this very timely video. I've been tv shopping and was down to two. This QN90D and the Sony Bravia 7. After being an extremely happy Samsung owner for the last 14 years, it looks like I'm Sony bound.
Thank you so much for reviewing the 98" model, not the 65" model. I'm in the process of choosing a TV and (I assume I'm not alone here), because I'm not constrained by very bright ambient light or a strict budget, if I'm going smaller than 98" then I'm going OLED for the viewing angle and picture quality. Your unambiguous comparison to the X90L was helpful. Thanks for not being afraid to ruffle a few feathers.
This is unfortunate. We’ve installed maybe 50-60 80D to 95D ranging from 55” to 85” and haven’t seen this with the 2024 models. That’s too bad it’s happening to someone with your reach

I don't have this TV but I do have this year's latest 55 inch QN85D. While it's an improvement over the budget Vizio it replaced, I was forced to acknowledge all its shortfalls once I brought the Sony Bravia 9 in the house for my family room. It just feels like Samsung isn't giving us their 100% all here. I don't think I've been this less enthused about Samsung TVs as I currently am with their 2024 lineup.
Our Sony X90L does not have any of the issues shown in this review so it's not that big TVs have a universal problem, but this one has a ways to go before it would earn my recommendation.
Great honest review ... this type of content is required for manufacturers to do better. Considering how highly you rate the X90L ... do you think Bravia 7 (85") would be a similar performer or should I save up for the Bravia 9?
I'm still enjoying my Sony X90K that was a warranty replacement of the X90CH that i got from Costco which kept shutting down and rebooting. They tried to fix it 3 times so then replaced it with the K I only paid $900 for the 65" H model and basically being upgraded to the newly released K for the same price, it was a good deal for me.
Confused between C4 OLED & Mini / Qled Hi everyone, I am a moderate gamer who watches Ott content as well. My screen usage is ~3 to 4 hours a day. I am really afraid of the longevity of OLEDs but keeping screen usage of mine, will my OLED last for around 5 years, if I don't play static videos like sports? Lg C4 is the one I have in mind and lg is offering 3 years warranty on the same. The alternatives I have in mind is Sony Bravia 7 xr70 mini led ( has worst matte screen) Samsung qn90D ( no Dolby vision/ dts ) Lg Qned 90T
This TV is $4,900 AUD ($3,200 USD) through Samsung’s EPP. It’s been so tempting to upgrade from my 85” x95k for size alone, but when I saw it in store next to a X90L, I was pretty disappointed, especially with a low quality signal
@@jollama of course. I’ve only ever had Sony TV’s. $10k+ discount for a 2024 TV is certainly enticing, if shortcomings can be overlooked. The reverse haloing shown here is absolutely disgusting and a deal breaker certainly.
@@Z3stym8 I took advantage of the offer, had it setup for a week now and can’t say I’ve noticed any reverse blooming yet. I haven’t done any calibration, but watching some 4K streaming content it’s blown me away so far.
Dear Andrew, Thank you for such a thorough review. I trust your judgment unquestionably and undeniably. You've saved me £12,000, which I will continue to save towards a Bravia 9, Mini LED, 98-inch, hopefully around 2025.
If I had $15k to spend on a TV, I probably have another $10k to get the 97 in G-series from LG. Since I don't, I'll always get an 83" OLED before any 98-100in LCD. However, now that TCL's 115" QM8 is available, I'm curious to see if/when Andrew will get it and put it through the gauntlet.
Thank you for the detailed review. It’s interesting to see that a legacy TV manufacturer still has its edge (I mean, the Samsung seems to be the one with edge problems here…👀). On a more serious note, Sony does have a huge history in both the TV and even cameras technology, and it still shows. While Samsung is a true powerhouse in technology, they still seem to sell by being impressive with great (and often “made to task”) content, regardless having the knowledge that’s not how it will be used 95% of the time. In all fairness, I also believe that most buyers won’t notice some of this issues, or being more precise, they won’t fault the TV for many of these issues, blaming the content itself for that behavior. The only real incentive for brands to getting worried about issues like these is being called out on reviews, which I’m not sure that it happens that often. I have no doubt that Samsung could do better than this (they sure have the means for it), but for some reason, they didn’t. But this happens a lot on almost every brand, dedicated HiFi included, and that’s one of the reasons why most (if not all) manufacturers often release products that aren’t as great as they could and should be in their class. There are many reasons for that to happen, but there are lots of half-baked products in the market from almost every manufacturer, and this is just another one. 😉
Hey there, love your channel! I've just bought this TV and absolutely love it for use as a pc monitor. It is nothing short of stellar for this use case. Cyberpunk is incredible. I have it running 4k on linux at 144hz. The TV side of it yes is a little over bright, very soap opera on RUclips. Yet to adjust it properly for that and will apply your thoughts on that which are accurate, however it does handle pc and ps5 brilliantly and FAR better than my top of the line full array Sony from about 2 years ago. The sharpness and clarity on Sony overall is better I feel. Agreed, once set, I think it will be perfect. Highly impressed and that is from someone who really doesn't like Samsung, they are about the only set at 43 inch with some decent quality in mini led. Thought I would hate the remote, but it's easy to use, however not as easy as the Sony overall. The colour on this set is unbelievable and makes the Sony look stale on that front. Handles motion extremely well. Very impressed, HOWEVER know I can make it better in the future with a little tweaking. Oh. Bought a set of klipsch rp8000f2 because of your review. You should try bi amping them on a Yamaha receiver. Amazing! easily twice as good a sound using rxa4a far better fidelity and punch that way.
Further to this, the TV is now beyond awesome especially through hdr and higher resolutionsources. It takes about a week for it to sort itself out. F1 is unreal to watch. Dead fast.
Is Tizen getting any better? the amount of ads, slowness, poor UX and lack of a simple input button is what keeps me away from even thinking about getting another Samsung TV
Samsung did make some tweaks to Tizen for the 2024 lineup...but it's not enough. Between Tizen and Samsung's very basic "solar remote" it's still a mess to navigate from input to input. The amount of time it takes just to watch a standard TV broadcast is frustrating.
I’ve recently had one of the worst experiences with Samsung. Huge delays on certain products and the absolute worst customer service. Hopefully they can get their act together.
You missed one major ommision on this TV and for me it is a deal breaker No support for DTS or DTS-X I have a massive collection of older media with this sound format so it is a must have. Thankfully other brands including Sony do support it.
Why would the TV need DTS ? If you're wanting to listen to DTS audio you would have a sound system of some sort and can just pass the audio directly to the sound bar or receiver.
The best thing about TV's, is... 95% of the buyers won't have two competing 98" panels sitting side-by-side to compare which is best while watching their favorite movie in their Home Theater. So even if the Samsung "SINGS" with limited content, the consistency of the Sony, along with its lower price, would be stellar. The blooming of he Sammy would drive me batshit crazy. ...OLED has ruined me, and once I notice that bloom, I can't stop seeing it. And that blooming (read, F'N) shadow non-sense? ...I couldn't get over it. Still waiting for a 98" OLED TV to drop, then waiting 3 years for the prices to tumble, and finishing our Home Theater off right. :)

Hey guys, great f-ing video. The Samsung performed just as I expected, great sometimes, extra large dumpster filler other times. First off, I’m currently getting in the business of designing and installing high quality, easy to use, and beautiful home AV systems. My call to action was all of these tik tok tv hangers that are putting in walls by the ceiling, or using in ceilings as LCR. Truly painful stuff watch, and regardless I just love hi-fi and video so it just makes sense. This channel has been my go to and my inspiration, and I just want to thank you both so much. Getting not only your opinions and experiences, but also the hard core numbers is a blessing and it helps me recommend products that I haven’t had the chance to see for myself. Once again thank you. I do just have one dumb question. Can a video processor, the Madvr for example, redeem say a tv like this, or close the gap created by Sonys superior processors?
Hello from Penang this week. I worked for Samsung Semiconductor for 4 years and had friends in Display and Telecom. Samsung's culture is a cult, seriously. Employees a reborn by emerging from a coffin and reborn into the Samsung family. Not kidding. It's called "Dipped in Blue." The devotion to The Cult is a double edged sword with people committing fully to Samsung and the desire to make "Samsung! Number One!" And thinking Samsung can do no wrong. Samsung is over 20% of South Korea's GDP. And they make EVERYTHING. TVs is the tip of the iceberg. But because Samsung can "do no wrong." They can miss obvious mistakes, or make things the market doesn't want, ie; folding phones. I could go on about the organizational culture, where it came from, why it has become what it is. But bottom line, they always seem to be a few degrees off course.

I knew a guy several years back that worked for a company that supplied parts and raw materials to Samsung. He had to fly over to their offices once a quarter and spend a week there working out deals and negotiating terms on supply contract revisions and adjustments. What he said about Samsung was far worse than this, actually. He said that the company is insane and they literally scared the living hell out of him. He said that the way they acted and behaved frightened him to the point where it was stressing him out so much that he couldn't even sleep at night because of it. The stress from all of it was putting his health at risk. He finally quit after three years of it and moved onto another job. He said he would never even consider working for a company that did business with them ever again.
@@michaelbeckerman7532Yup. When Samsung opened their fan in Austin in '96 they made an overt effort to make the US culture work with the hardcore Korean culture. Both sides had to compromise in order for it to work. TSMC is now facing that reality build their fab in Phoenix. They are used to commading people. US workers say. "F*ck you."

Yes, I enjoy my system! Today I am hosting the Full Dune epic so my family will get a shot at it also. I use the 4K discs as the sound is unapproachable by streaming with the full 7.2.4 rocking the house, lol. Yea, I am still a kid in my older age.
I will finally be getting an 85" QN90C on black Friday/cyber Monday. I can get it right now for under $1900 directly from Samsung but I want to see how much cheaper it is by late November. No WAY is the D model worth that much more $$$$$.
I like a lot more projectors than giant TVs. Two reasons for that. One is that i can swich with projectors back and forth betweeen different picture sizes. The other is that the projectors does not dominate the rooms like big TVs do.
I mean there are plenty of better TVs from an image quality standpoint than the sony X90L. The LG G3/G4, S95C/D, Sony A95L Sony bravia 7 and bravia 9 etc
@@Time-Travelling-Lesbian 98" for $5k? None of those you mentioned are as immersive or epic as a 98" X90L (I know because I also have OLEDS made by Sony, LG and Samsung).
I noticed the "reverse vignetting" with my Sony X95J too. However, I have not seen that in newer Sony TVs. To me, that suggests that Samsung and possibly others are around 3-5 years behind Sony in backlight system control.

We got an 85” QN90C a couple of months ago. I can honestly say that we haven’t experienced the issues that you have. Do you think it’s endemic to the D models? 🤔🤷🏼
@andyjackson682 How do you like it so far? I am about to buy a 85" QN90C. Buying a TV always seems like a gamble these days... Are you happy with the picture quality and backlighting in general? Is the motion ok or " horrible ", as some people say? And is the anti-reflection coating doing a good job during the day? Those are my main concerns...
@@williambroth7784 We love ours. It has a great picture and is built like a tank. The backlighting is good on it and we haven’t really been bothered by motion artifacts or stutter. The colors on it look VERY natural. I’m 71 so I can’t really comment on it’s gaming abilities. We are totally happy with it and in no way regret purchasing it. Hope this helps.
That blooming in the larger tv's is a deal breaker even if the price was only a 1000 dollars. No one should be subjected to that for their hard earned money. However they do make great tv's in other series.
Samsung makes great TVs and we have a few "smaller" models in our house and I love them. This issue with the bigger screen gives me some sense of satisfaction though as I already decided on a 4k short throw laser projector which is cheaper and also still needs a light controlled room. I use my 77 inch A80 Sony Oled for movie watching mainly!!!! Have you guys had a chance to do a review on the Sony QD Oled A95L and if you haven't, are you going to??????????????????

If I can jump in, if OLED is an option then I say go for the S90C/D if you want to stick with Samsung. LCD TV I say switch to Sony and get the Bravia 7.

@@txerapng We have changed not only camera systems but lighting, too. Both have taken some getting used to on my end (I'm still not 100 percent proficient), but I can also see improvements in dynamic range and quality. The file sizes are HUGE, though, and my computer may need an update next. It never ends.
Vignette and false contours/auras are apparently not limited to their TVs, apparently their flagship mobile phones also suffer the same processing flaws for their photos. Such a shame.
The best tv , to my eyes, is 83" LG g4. However, At the recent sale price of $4k , the 98" TCL QM851G is surely tempting. Samsung QC on mini Led has gone down the drain, once they stopped making their own lcd panels. The only Samsung TV of Hugh quality is their quantum old line.
I have a QN90A 75” Samsung. I don’t know anything about calibration, so mine runs the way it came out of the box. It’s the clearest TV I’ve ever seen and the color is perfect. It’s better than my son’s 75” LG TV.
Hi Dan. I'm not surprised by your experience. Smaller TVs often have fewer issues simply because there is less real estate, thus fewer zones to control, making it less taxing on the internal processing. This is why when Samsung offered us the smaller 75" QN900D to replace our 85" issue-laden review sample, we said no. As for the LG comparison, LG colors are (or have been) just different and look dull by comparison. People inherently prefer a brighter, more colorful picture, hence why I'm not surprised of your preference for Samsung. LG typically needs calibration to look its best (something most consumers don't do).
Does filmmaker mode require a completely dark room? In normal living rooms would you increase the birghtness a bit for night time viewing or not needed?
Our room is not completely dark, but some programming does look better when the room is light-controlled. You'll be more likely to increase your brightness in a brightly lit room than you would in one that is light-controlled.
I recently read that the LG TVs are the only ones so far to have adopted the Apple Music app. I've been using it and enjoying some of the better Atmos mixes through my Q990C. However, some people say the sound quality is better through an Apple TV 4k (possible different codec or envelope format?), but will streaming lossy Atmos tracks differ that much between platforms? And speaking of the Q990C, one apparently has to update the firmware by USB to 1004 because the smartthings app won't do it. Have you done that and is there a similar issue on the Q990D? New fan and recent sub to your content.
@@DisplayNAudioTech The app wouldn't let you know-- it says mine is up to date with version 1002, when you can download 1004 on Samsung's site. People claim more rear engagement on 1004. All apps up to date-- it's a known issue.
I’m still not convinced anybody can match LG OLED. Calibrated mine with a free app “THX tune-up” and the picture is excellent. It’s 5-6yrs old C Series 65” and never had a problem or issue! I also don’t understand the “need” of a TV that takes up the whole wall. So why compromise picture quality if it’s too large for the room? Bigger ain’t always better! If you want immersion, sit closer to the TV! You won’t go blind…….
Obviously, the space will dictate what size TV works best. If your room is smaller, a smaller-sized TV would no doubt look more appropriate. In contrast, our living room space is large, so a 65-75" TV looks tiny and out of place. Additionally, a TV of any size still needs to perform and scale well. Sitting "closer" won't solve poor performance problems. Regardless, reviewing large-format TVs is necessary and needed in this space. If you judge your purchasing decision based on a review of a smaller version of the same model, you may be disappointed in the results if you move up in size.
@@Barbarapape We don't live in a mansion. We just happen to have a larger living space so larger TVs make more sense in our space. We certainly don't use anything like this in our bedroom. We have a 65" and 55" in our 2 bedrooms because those are the sizes that work best.
@@KristiWright We all buy the most suitable TV's for the room they are used in. Here in the UK the homes are on average much smaller, hence why i have a 55" in my living room and a 42" in my bedroom.
@@KristiWright If your room is that large i would have thought a projector would be a better option. I have a friend who is lucky enough to have a very large room as a dedicated home cinema room and after trying several large screen TV's he found the the larger he went, the worse the image became so he opted for an 120" motorised screen and ceiling mounted 4K projector fed via a high end upscaler This way even HD qulaity is still watchable. most TV's are poor at upscaling this where Sony excels at.
Considering the processing issues, is it risky to be looking at the s90d right now? I am also looking at the G4, but I’m not sure if the premium is worth it

5:55 calibrated doesn't automaticaly mean, it looks good 🤦🏼♂. It just means that it's calibrated, which makes a pretty dimm display and non-poping colors since it's made for dark enviroments. Don't let this guy fool you into calibrating your TV. Just set the picture to what you like the most and looks good for you.

This is a review; whether you prefer to set your TV in one of the preset profiles or want to adjust the display to your liking, there are standards of calibration and accuracy that can be measured and identified. Providing this information is part of my job as a reviewer. If you prefer a different look for your TV, by all means, do as you wish.

Hi Andrew and Kristi. Seems actually shocking that Samsung is asking $15K for this TV in 2024! Maybe a couple of years ago that price might have been "reasonable" at this screen size, but the prices have dropped dramatically in today's TV market. Yeah, I sort of did a double-take when I saw the price, too, especially considering that miniLED TVs that are 98 inches in size are routinely priced below $5K now. I expect perfection when a TV is the price of a small or used car.
Great review and sadly confirms my bias against Samsung. I used to be a huge Samsung fan back in the day(shout out to the ol' KS8000) but have become a Sony convert. Currently a happy owner of 65" x950H, 75" x90L and 77" a80J.
I really dislike Tizen OS, being able to put Sony TVs into 'apps only mode' is another nice benefit I don't see discussed much. Completey gets rid of ads and suggested content.
I just talked my buddy out of a 65" Q90D and into 65" x93L. He saved some money and although he didn't do a side by side comparison in his home, he is very happy he got the x93L.
Agree. Tizen OS is such a mess. I added a Google Chromecast with Android TV the next day to my Samsung TV.

Definitely! Doesn't do enough.... which is a shame as I find them far better than the other reviewers efforts, such as Digital Trends.
Plasmas.... I designed a trade show for Sony in the mid 90's that featured their plasma screen technology. It took a room full of gear to drive a small "plasmatron" screen (24" perhaps) with additional air conditioning required for its tech space. It was, at the time, the most amazing thing I had ever seen screenwise and resolution. How far things have come.
I still have a fully working Pioneer Kuro 50" Plasma, great for keeping the room warm in winter.
And with SD and HD it blows away todays 4K panels.
Bought an end of line Samsung QN90C a few weeks ago... talk about buyer's remorse!
So many problems... audio issues, hdmi switching issues, the most painful, frustrating and slow setup (as a first time Samsungite), UI operability issues... and worst of all TERRIBLE motion processing (I mean REALLY bad).
Bought it as it was recommended by respectable sources (ahem, Caleb!).
Back to the shop it went and replaced with an LG 55QNED866RE
I am now a calmer and happier man 🙂
I do still have the 85in qn90a and I love this tv. I will say I am disappointed if I ever wanted the qn90d. Maybe the next year if Samsung came fix this. I wonder say I wouldn’t mind the moving to Sony QLED. But we’ll see. Good honest review sir 👍🏼

I'm a Sony, Samsung, & LG dealer and have owned a AV custom integration firm for 20 years..... Samsungs are my LEAST favorite TV to work with.
Their software & eArc implementation is AWFUL. Their updates often reset or outright just break settings that worked fine previously.... sometimes it's several months wait for fixes. eArc is particularly nasty with certain receivers (Yamaha in particular)
I cringe when we sell Samsungs into jobs (typically we do thisnonly if there is going to be a glare problem with natural light - their screens are by far the best at dissipation of screen glare). I know it's going to be a long term dog fight.
LG is the best TV all things considered, IMO. For the cost, I also like the 100" 8k Hisense and some of the nicer TLC stuff. I have dealt with, sold, & installed it all at this stage in my career.
LG and Sony have been rock-solid for us over the years. Samsung used to be part of that group, but it's gotten weird in the last two to maybe three years. Hisense is also acting up a lot more lately. TCL has been solid so long as you buy upmarket.
Thank you for clearly demonstrating the processing and local dimming issues you were seeing rather than just describing them. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Please continue this style of review in your future TV reviews. Looking forward to seeing your TCL review. TCL TVs also tend to suffer from various local dimming issues such as backlight instability/fluctuations in dim content, poor HDR EOTF tracking with varying content APL, black crush, etc.
I actually had a complete video of the Bridgerton scenes but Netflix kept flagging its usage which is why I had to use still images. It was wild to see in motion.
That blooming is atrocious! But for anyone who was/is looking at the smaller variants - I can say that my 43” QN90D has been pretty fantastic with no noticeable blooming/local dimming shenanigans.
For reference I’m using mine as a mixed usage PC monitor and regular TV that’s connected to an Apple TV. Only complaint I have about it is that there’s some black smearing when gaming when compared to my old ACER IPS gaming monitor. Apart from that: me = happy chappy.
We are thinking about putting a few 43" TVs in a small gym area. Do you think they'd be okay for that?

I have the QN90D 43" version of this TV just for a gaming room and it's amazing. I have not noticed any of the cons you mentioned in your review.
I'm not surprised your 43" performs better. It doesn't require the processing power needed for something this size (98"). It's also likely that the TVs aren't remotely close to the same despite being in the same series.

My biggest issues with Samsung is software, it's totally kills it for me. Those "fancy features" are where they always fall flat on their face. In terms of image, my money still goes to Samsung if you can just get over their terrible buggy software. As a hardware company (phones included) they are class leading, but in terms of software it dramatically holds them back. SAMSUNG needs to step up its focus there. Additionally, it makes me sad that in 2024 we're still having issues with local dimming. "not today Satan" made my week, hope you both have a great one, see you friday.
Have had a Samsung 75” QN90A for a few years and just love it. Great picture for us. Just how good does a TV have to get before you can say, this is the end of the line and next is real life?
Well, the answer is in your question. QN90A it was, which is 2021 model. Most of the models after that gets downgraded every year, probably because of cost cutting.

This review just reinforces why I'm exchanging the QN90D I bought for a Bravia 9: Sony is just better at making a premium TV than Samsung is.

@@keithzastrow It really is. Samsung's build quality, OS, and hardware are crap now compared to what it used to be. I had to return *2* QN90D's!
The first one had a panel which was so uneven, so bent that when I texted the photo to Samsung customer service they told me to ask for an exchange from the retailer ASAP.
The second one had multiple, large clusters of dead pixels all over the screen.
The Sony Bravia 9? No dead pixels, Perfect panel shape, first time around. Maybe paying less and getting crap is OK for you, it isn't for me. My hard earned money is going towards something that is worth it, not shoddy crap.
@rsr789 I've yet to read a single post on RUclips from someone who wasn't just over the moon happy with their QN90C especially from someone who got it in a larger size like I will be. I'm sticking with my plan to get it in the 85" size come November.

@@rsr789 QN90C. I'm not about to pay the $$$ for a D model when I can get the C for under $1900 in the 85" size. And I am not going by just RUclips comments lol. All of the issues I have seen with the C model are from the smaller screen sizes. I have yet to hear/read any issues with the 85" size. Also, keep in mind I will be upgrading from a 65" Sharp Aquos. Smart TVs were even invented when I got that TV lol. I'm pretty sure I'll be over the moon happy with this QN90C.

When looking at a 98-inch Q80C at Best Buy, after a few minutes my eyes begin to hurt. I noticed this even on smaller models. I'm hoping the eye-burning brightness can be calibrated and adjusted. This is why I'm leaning towards an X90L 98-inch with Full-array as my preference. Although I did experience similar eye strain when viewing the new Bravia 9 on an 85-inch. I ultimately do prefer the 97-inch LG G2 as there is no strain with OLED. But that is a tough pill to swallow even if on sale for $15K. Great review as always!
TVs are put into "store mode" when on display at retailers like BB in order to look bright and colorful in those large spaces. Bright and colorful sells. Placing any TV in its movie or filmmaker mode typically results in a more natural and thus, less bright image.

Thanks for the review. I am currently deciding between the Qn90D and the Bravia 9, which are both in my home atm, and the only word I have for the 90D is, "disappointed". It's an ok tv but for 3000 dollars it's totally not worth it, imo. I was unimpressed with its overall brightness in both SDR and HDR and, as you said in this review, the image can at times be great and at other times be really disappointing. I watch a lot of SDR content in 1080p and I agree too, the upscaling is really inconsistent and overall, just doesn't look that great. In comparison with the Bravia 9, the B9 blows it out of the water in every single way and yet it's only 500 dollars more. I honestly expected a lot more from Samsung.

Here in Dubai, UAE 🇦🇪 98” Q80C is selling for approx 3.5k -4k 😂
And the 98” inches DU9000 is launched at the same price, and I believe in few months it could dropped down to 2.5k to 3k.

I'm in the process of choosing a TV and (I assume I'm not alone here), because I'm not constrained by very bright ambient light or a strict budget, if I'm going smaller than 98" then I'm going OLED for the viewing angle and picture quality. This is unfortunate. We’ve installed maybe 50-60 80D to 95D ranging from 55” to 85” and haven’t seen this with the 2024 models. That’s too bad it’s happening to someone with your reach

I don't have this TV but I do have this year's latest 55 inch QN85D. While it's an improvement over the budget Vizio it replaced, I was forced to acknowledge all its shortfalls once I brought the Sony Bravia 9 in the house for my family room. It just feels like Samsung isn't giving us their 100% all here. I don't think I've been this less enthused about Samsung TVs as I currently am with their 2024 lineup.
Appreciate your honest review. I guess these larger TVs have a way to go to get the bugs out of them.
Our Sony X90L does not have any of the issues shown in this review so it's not that big TVs have a universal problem, but this one has a ways to go before it would earn my recommendation.

I can't say as we have not tested the new Bravia TVs yet.
I'm still enjoying my Sony X90K that was a warranty replacement of the X90CH that i got from Costco which kept shutting down and rebooting. They tried to fix it 3 times so then replaced it with the K
I only paid $900 for the 65" H model and basically being upgraded to the newly released K for the same price, it was a good deal for me.
Confused between C4 OLED & Mini / Qled
Hi everyone, I am a moderate gamer who watches Ott content as well. My screen usage is ~3 to 4 hours a day. I am really afraid of the longevity of OLEDs but keeping screen usage of mine, will my OLED last for around 5 years, if I don't play static videos like sports? Lg C4 is the one I have in mind and lg is offering 3 years warranty on the same.
The alternatives I have in mind is
Sony Bravia 7 xr70 mini led ( has worst matte screen)
Samsung qn90D ( no Dolby vision/ dts )
Lg Qned 90T
This TV is $4,900 AUD ($3,200 USD) through Samsung’s EPP. It’s been so tempting to upgrade from my 85” x95k for size alone, but when I saw it in store next to a X90L, I was pretty disappointed, especially with a low quality signal

@@jollama of course. I’ve only ever had Sony TV’s. $10k+ discount for a 2024 TV is certainly enticing, if shortcomings can be overlooked. The reverse haloing shown here is absolutely disgusting and a deal breaker certainly.
@@Z3stym8 I took advantage of the offer, had it setup for a week now and can’t say I’ve noticed any reverse blooming yet. I haven’t done any calibration, but watching some 4K streaming content it’s blown me away so far.

If I had $15k to spend on a TV, I probably have another $10k to get the 97 in G-series from LG. Since I don't, I'll always get an 83" OLED before any 98-100in LCD. However, now that TCL's 115" QM8 is available, I'm curious to see if/when Andrew will get it and put it through the gauntlet.

It’s interesting to see that a legacy TV manufacturer still has its edge (I mean, the Samsung seems to be the one with edge problems here…👀).
On a more serious note, Sony does have a huge history in both the TV and even cameras technology, and it still shows.
While Samsung is a true powerhouse in technology, they still seem to sell by being impressive with great (and often “made to task”) content, regardless having the knowledge that’s not how it will be used 95% of the time.
In all fairness, I also believe that most buyers won’t notice some of this issues, or being more precise, they won’t fault the TV for many of these issues, blaming the content itself for that behavior.
The only real incentive for brands to getting worried about issues like these is being called out on reviews, which I’m not sure that it happens that often.
I have no doubt that Samsung could do better than this (they sure have the means for it), but for some reason, they didn’t.
But this happens a lot on almost every brand, dedicated HiFi included, and that’s one of the reasons why most (if not all) manufacturers often release products that aren’t as great as they could and should be in their class.
There are many reasons for that to happen, but there are lots of half-baked products in the market from almost every manufacturer, and this is just another one. 😉

Hey there, love your channel! I've just bought this TV and absolutely love it for use as a pc monitor. It is nothing short of stellar for this use case. Cyberpunk is incredible. I have it running 4k on linux at 144hz. The TV side of it yes is a little over bright, very soap opera on RUclips. Yet to adjust it properly for that and will apply your thoughts on that which are accurate, however it does handle pc and ps5 brilliantly and FAR better than my top of the line full array Sony from about 2 years ago. The sharpness and clarity on Sony overall is better I feel. Agreed, once set, I think it will be perfect. Highly impressed and that is from someone who really doesn't like Samsung, they are about the only set at 43 inch with some decent quality in mini led. Thought I would hate the remote, but it's easy to use, however not as easy as the Sony overall. The colour on this set is unbelievable and makes the Sony look stale on that front. Handles motion extremely well. Very impressed, HOWEVER know I can make it better in the future with a little tweaking. Oh. Bought a set of klipsch rp8000f2 because of your review. You should try bi amping them on a Yamaha receiver. Amazing! easily twice as good a sound using rxa4a far better fidelity and punch that way.
Further to this, the TV is now beyond awesome especially through hdr and higher resolutionsources. It takes about a week for it to sort itself out. F1 is unreal to watch. Dead fast.
Is Tizen getting any better? the amount of ads, slowness, poor UX and lack of a simple input button is what keeps me away from even thinking about getting another Samsung TV
I just connect an AppleTV and set my default input and powerup settings to it versus Samsung's own UI because I cannot stand Tizen.
Samsung did make some tweaks to Tizen for the 2024 lineup...but it's not enough. Between Tizen and Samsung's very basic "solar remote" it's still a mess to navigate from input to input. The amount of time it takes just to watch a standard TV broadcast is frustrating.

I’ve recently had one of the worst experiences with Samsung. Huge delays on certain products and the absolute worst customer service. Hopefully they can get their act together.

You missed one major ommision on this TV and for me it is a deal breaker
No support for DTS or DTS-X
I have a massive collection of older media with this sound format so it is
a must have.
Thankfully other brands including Sony do support it.
Why would the TV need DTS ? If you're wanting to listen to DTS audio you would have a sound system of some sort and can just pass the audio directly to the sound bar or receiver.
The best thing about TV's, is... 95% of the buyers won't have two competing 98" panels sitting side-by-side to compare which is best while watching their favorite movie in their Home Theater. So even if the Samsung "SINGS" with limited content, the consistency of the Sony, along with its lower price, would be stellar. The blooming of he Sammy would drive me batshit crazy. ...OLED has ruined me, and once I notice that bloom, I can't stop seeing it. And that blooming (read, F'N) shadow non-sense? ...I couldn't get over it.

Was wondering, did you try the calibration using the smarthings app and your phone infront of the screen on the QN90D and if so, how much difference did it make over normal Movie / FM Mode and how close to your own proper calibrated efforts did it get?

Hey guys, great f-ing video. The Samsung performed just as I expected, great sometimes, extra large dumpster filler other times.
First off, I’m currently getting in the business of designing and installing high quality, easy to use, and beautiful home AV systems. My call to action was all of these tik tok tv hangers that are putting in walls by the ceiling, or using in ceilings as LCR. Truly painful stuff watch, and regardless I just love hi-fi and video so it just makes sense. This channel has been my go to and my inspiration, and I just want to thank you both so much. Getting not only your opinions and experiences, but also the hard core numbers is a blessing and it helps me recommend products that I haven’t had the chance to see for myself. Once again thank you.
I do just have one dumb question. Can a video processor, the Madvr for example, redeem say a tv like this, or close the gap created by Sonys superior processors?

I worked for Samsung Semiconductor for 4 years and had friends in Display and Telecom. Samsung's culture is a cult, seriously. Employees a reborn by emerging from a coffin and reborn into the Samsung family. Not kidding. It's called "Dipped in Blue."
The devotion to The Cult is a double edged sword with people committing fully to Samsung and the desire to make "Samsung! Number One!" And thinking Samsung can do no wrong. Samsung is over 20% of South Korea's GDP. And they make EVERYTHING. TVs is the tip of the iceberg. But because Samsung can "do no wrong." They can miss obvious mistakes, or make things the market doesn't want, ie; folding phones.
I could go on about the organizational culture, where it came from, why it has become what it is. But bottom line, they always seem to be a few degrees off course.
OMG, this is the first I've heard of this! WOW, if the culture is how you describe it (no reason to doubt you), that's wacky.

I knew a guy several years back that worked for a company that supplied parts and raw materials to Samsung. He had to fly over to their offices once a quarter and spend a week there working out deals and negotiating terms on supply contract revisions and adjustments. What he said about Samsung was far worse than this, actually. He said that the company is insane and they literally scared the living hell out of him. He said that the way they acted and behaved frightened him to the point where it was stressing him out so much that he couldn't even sleep at night because of it. The stress from all of it was putting his health at risk. He finally quit after three years of it and moved onto another job. He said he would never even consider working for a company that did business with them ever again.
@@michaelbeckerman7532Yup. When Samsung opened their fan in Austin in '96 they made an overt effort to make the US culture work with the hardcore Korean culture. Both sides had to compromise in order for it to work.
TSMC is now facing that reality build their fab in Phoenix. They are used to commading people. US workers say. "F*ck you."
You and Kristi💯 spoken about some of the visual and interior design considerations of living with devices. Large-sized TV’s tend dominate a room’s visual balance… they’re fun but can look awkward.
Any advice, tips, tricks, shortcuts on how to incorporate an appropriate-sized TV into the overall interior design of a room?

Yes, I enjoy my system! Today I am hosting the Full Dune epic so my family will get a shot at it also. I use the 4K discs as the sound is unapproachable by streaming with the full 7.2.4 rocking the house, lol. Yea, I am still a kid in my older age.

I will finally be getting an 85" QN90C on black Friday/cyber Monday. I can get it right now for under $1900 directly from Samsung but I want to see how much cheaper it is by late November. No WAY is the D model worth that much more $$$$$.
I like a lot more projectors than giant TVs. Two reasons for that. One is that i can swich with projectors back and forth betweeen different picture sizes. The other is that the projectors does not dominate the rooms like big TVs do.
This TV is why I got the Sony X90L 98". There's really no better TV or deal than the Sony for only $5k right now.
I mean there are plenty of better TVs from an image quality standpoint than the sony X90L. The LG G3/G4, S95C/D, Sony A95L Sony bravia 7 and bravia 9 etc
@@Time-Travelling-Lesbian 98" for $5k? None of those you mentioned are as immersive or epic as a 98" X90L (I know because I also have OLEDS made by Sony, LG and Samsung).
I noticed the "reverse vignetting" with my Sony X95J too. However, I have not seen that in newer Sony TVs. To me, that suggests that Samsung and possibly others are around 3-5 years behind Sony in backlight system control.

Yes, it should be fine. It's the best mount I've used so far, and we just put the QM8 on the wall today on the same mount.

I Have The Samsung QN800C 85 Inch Haven't Had Any Issues.
We got an 85” QN90C a couple of months ago. I can honestly say that we haven’t experienced the issues that you have. Do you think it’s endemic to the D models? 🤔🤷🏼
@andyjackson682 How do you like it so far? I am about to buy a 85" QN90C. Buying a TV always seems like a gamble these days... Are you happy with the picture quality and backlighting in general? Is the motion ok or " horrible ", as some people say? And is the anti-reflection coating doing a good job during the day? Those are my main concerns...
@@williambroth7784 We love ours. It has a great picture and is built like a tank. The backlighting is good on it and we haven’t really been bothered by motion artifacts or stutter. The colors on it look VERY natural. I’m 71 so I can’t really comment on it’s gaming abilities. We are totally happy with it and in no way regret purchasing it. Hope this helps.

That blooming in the larger tv's is a deal breaker even if the price was only a 1000 dollars. No one should be subjected to that for their hard earned money. However they do make great tv's in other series.
I own a 55 QN90D and blooming is very bad on this TV . I been dealing with their customer service for a month now but no solution!
Did you verify that the qn90d 55" has an IPS or VA panel? Did you try to tap the screen, did you see flashes? ...Could you upload a blooming video?
Samsung makes great TVs and we have a few "smaller" models in our house and I love them. This issue with the bigger screen gives me some sense of satisfaction though as I already decided on a 4k short throw laser projector which is cheaper and also still needs a light controlled room.

I use my 77 inch A80 Sony Oled for movie watching mainly!!!! Have you guys had a chance to do a review on the Sony QD Oled A95L and if you haven't, are you going to??????????????????
Very happy with my 75” QN90A. I still think it has a super picture. Watching Yosemite National Park on RUclips 4K in Dynamic mode blows my mind.

If I can jump in, if OLED is an option then I say go for the S90C/D if you want to stick with Samsung. LCD TV I say switch to Sony and get the Bravia 7.

@@txerapng We have changed not only camera systems but lighting, too. Both have taken some getting used to on my end (I'm still not 100 percent proficient), but I can also see improvements in dynamic range and quality. The file sizes are HUGE, though, and my computer may need an update next. It never ends.
Vignette and false contours/auras are apparently not limited to their TVs, apparently their flagship mobile phones also suffer the same processing flaws for their photos. Such a shame.
The best tv , to my eyes, is 83" LG g4. However, At the recent sale price of $4k , the 98" TCL QM851G is surely tempting. Samsung QC on mini Led has gone down the drain, once they stopped making their own lcd panels.
The only Samsung TV of Hugh quality is their quantum old line.

I have a QN90A 75” Samsung. I don’t know anything about calibration, so mine runs the way it came out of the box. It’s the clearest TV I’ve ever seen and the color is perfect. It’s better than my son’s 75” LG TV.
Hi Dan. I'm not surprised by your experience. Smaller TVs often have fewer issues simply because there is less real estate, thus fewer zones to control, making it less taxing on the internal processing. This is why when Samsung offered us the smaller 75" QN900D to replace our 85" issue-laden review sample, we said no.
As for the LG comparison, LG colors are (or have been) just different and look dull by comparison. People inherently prefer a brighter, more colorful picture, hence why I'm not surprised of your preference for Samsung. LG typically needs calibration to look its best (something most consumers don't do).

The Klipsch 9s aren't being mentioned in your last reviews. I own a calibrated S95B and I don't know anything that beats it

Does filmmaker mode require a completely dark room? In normal living rooms would you increase the birghtness a bit for night time viewing or not needed?
Our room is not completely dark, but some programming does look better when the room is light-controlled. You'll be more likely to increase your brightness in a brightly lit room than you would in one that is light-controlled.
I recently read that the LG TVs are the only ones so far to have adopted the Apple Music app. I've been using it and enjoying some of the better Atmos mixes through my Q990C. However, some people say the sound quality is better through an Apple TV 4k (possible different codec or envelope format?), but will streaming lossy Atmos tracks differ that much between platforms? And speaking of the Q990C, one apparently has to update the firmware by USB to 1004 because the smartthings app won't do it. Have you done that and is there a similar issue on the Q990D? New fan and recent sub to your content.
I haven’t had any issue in store or with my personal q990c. Neither did any of customer who bought it. Probably app needs updated or your phone.
@@DisplayNAudioTech The app wouldn't let you know-- it says mine is up to date with version 1002, when you can download 1004 on Samsung's site. People claim more rear engagement on 1004. All apps up to date-- it's a known issue.
I'd be going the TCL Q series over the Samsung,,, conflicting videos seem to say TCL would win without calibration

I prefer their 2023 line up as well. I'm not a fan of the current s95D with their matte screen.
I’m still not convinced anybody can match LG OLED. Calibrated mine with a free app “THX tune-up” and the picture is excellent. It’s 5-6yrs old C Series 65” and never had a problem or issue! I also don’t understand the “need” of a TV that takes up the whole wall. So why compromise picture quality if it’s too large for the room? Bigger ain’t always better! If you want immersion, sit closer to the TV! You won’t go blind…….
I agree, a 55" is the most my room can take.
Bigger can be to big for some of us that don't live in mansions.
Obviously, the space will dictate what size TV works best. If your room is smaller, a smaller-sized TV would no doubt look more appropriate. In contrast, our living room space is large, so a 65-75" TV looks tiny and out of place. Additionally, a TV of any size still needs to perform and scale well. Sitting "closer" won't solve poor performance problems.
Regardless, reviewing large-format TVs is necessary and needed in this space. If you judge your purchasing decision based on a review of a smaller version of the same model, you may be disappointed in the results if you move up in size.
@@Barbarapape We don't live in a mansion. We just happen to have a larger living space so larger TVs make more sense in our space. We certainly don't use anything like this in our bedroom. We have a 65" and 55" in our 2 bedrooms because those are the sizes that work best.

Here in the UK the homes are on average much smaller, hence why i have a 55" in my living room
and a 42" in my bedroom.

I have a friend who is lucky enough to have a very large room as a dedicated home cinema room
and after trying several large screen TV's he found the the larger he went, the worse the image became
so he opted for an 120" motorised screen and ceiling mounted 4K projector fed via a high end upscaler
This way even HD qulaity is still watchable. most TV's are poor at upscaling this where Sony excels at.

No, the issues are the mini LED processing, QD OLED doesn’t struggle
