    Hello..
I am from Serbia. I graduated from the Higher School of Economics (in the West it is called the College,) Department of Finance, Banking and Accounting.
I took the subject that treated this subject and listened to it in the second year of study
it was called "Theory and Analysis of the Balance Sheet and Income Statement"
After 4 years of work in practice, I gained the condition
    to pass
exam for the Certificate of Accountant
And I managed to pass it from the first time
whereby I acquired the Title and Certificate
    Accountants.
I can say that this lecture
    on analyzing items
    The balance is EXTRAORDINARY!

    • @winsonliu1691

Exactly. There’s an opportunity cost to holding cash beyond enough to pay current liabilities. Also, if receivables are too high, that’s time value of money lost. And if there’s too much inventory, that’s also an opportunity cost of higher ROI elsewhere that the cash should’ve been deployed. Inventory for some industries are actually a lot less liquid than others.

Raimundas. Maybe you can ans. this: I own AUY, a gold mining company. The p/e is in the 30s, but the CEO always emphasizes free cash flow. If I use free cash flow instead of earnings I would get a more reasonable number, a number that is more like it’s profitable peers. What is coming out of cash flow that is decreasing the earnings and can a company adjust it’s bookkeeping to lower the p/e.

Suggestion for when you’re comparing different time periods of each line item (around minute 13-14). This is where having this data exported into Excel is better than using a website. Instead of looking at the numerical value increases, it’s more valuable to know the relative change. So you need to calculate the year-over-year change for each year to see if that has increased or decreased.
If you compare that percent change of Current Liabilities and Current Assets, you’ll see which one is growing faster than the other. If you want to keep that ratio at a certain level at all times, especially if Google in this example is growing CA faster than CL, then they should take that excess growth and throw it into investments (unless their plan is to build up a big cash position to make an acquisition).

Thank you so much! I watch at least 8 videos about how to read a balance sheet, and I finished more confused than ever. They always put beginner friendly but it never really is. I am just getting into stocks with absolutely zero financial or accounting background. I do not know the basics, so some of the other videos will state terms I do not know and speak way to fast and I have to constantly stop, rewind, pause and it can be overwhelming. It is seriously frustrating and makes me question my level of intelligence often and I know I am pretty smart. So thank you for speaking clearly, at a good pace, and speaking in plain terms. I gave you a like, watched the video twice and all the ads in full in appreciation :)

Simple and nice explanation, Thank you. Before making any investment, i am already checking the yahoo finance, financial income statement "Net Income" has gradually increasing. That's working good for me. Along with that i will use "Balance Sheet" to find the best stock.

Daniel, THIS VIDEO IS EXCELLENT!! I am probably old enough to be your grandmother but I am a newborn when it comes to investing. LOL Your video was so so clear and I thank you for teaching me this. I used to be a banker and I balanced statements all the time for clients. You were so helpful. Hopefully, you teach other classes regarding investing. I am online looking at many videos in order to understand the stock investing lingo. I have subscribed so that I can learn more from you. Thank you again.

I watched the whole video - I found it very helpful and your style and tone are really perfect. I of course subscribed! I studied accounting and finance years ago and understand the genral theory - what i find hard is that every company reports things in a slightly different way and there are always thigs I don't understand. I checked out Pfizer while I was watching your video. i saw a huge increase in Liabilities (about 30B) and a similar increase in assets - I thought they must have bought something pretty huge - a quick Google search and I saw they paid 30B for another company in December 2023, so that adds up. What I don't understand is why the net tangible assets have gone down 43B. I understand that goodwill is not included, but surely when they bought this company, they must have bought some assets and why the loss of tangible assets is 13B higher than the value of the purchase.
