I installed the transmission cooler today. Thanks for the guide Bob. The nipples that came with the cooler, I used to that plugged the hoses. It worked great! No leaks at all.
interesting approach. just watched another video that suggested using the bottom port on the transmission cooler as the input (out fr the radiator) and the top as the output (back to the transmission); opposite of this video. the benefit is that you can connect the bottom hose before filling the cooler w/ fluid. less spillage and easier. regarding the possibility of air being trapped, it's not an issue because the transmission has a breather. any excess air will be purged. no wrong away. just a different approach. also, galvanized metal also has a anti-rust coating an is less expensive. VERY MUCH appreciate this video, bob!
Wow! What a great vid. Thanks GxBob. You out did yourself on this one. The Best Gx460 channel on the Tube!!
Yo Gipstetz, always looking forward to hearing from you. 😀
Don't have a gx but still watch all your videos. Love your content and your sense of humor. 😂
Thank you??? Sorry there was no humor in this one because i had so much to cover and plus i'm running out of material for the vietnamese guy, Phuc Dat Bich or my girlfriend, Tyesha.
Unreal video! I can only imagine how much time it takes to film and edit this video for us. Much appreciated.
Considering the $3.75 RUclips paid me for the total number of views I received for this video, it was well worth it.
@@GXBOB Big Money!
Out of 10 videos you the only one who explains the best 👍👌🇺🇲
Thank you Enoch, i appreciate this comment. It helps me to understand what i need to do better. Thanks for tuning in.
Great video Bob! One suggestion: I had a ton of trouble getting the return house to slide onto the metal tube (very tight connection), so in the process, all the fluid I just put into the cooler dumped out of that hose onto me. Instead of trying to attach all the hoses with a full cooler, consider filling the cooler, and the emptying that fluid into another container and pumping it into the regular transmission fill hole. Then you can install the cooler empty and not worry about spilling fluid.
Thanks William for the excellent input. 😀
Did it again 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👊🏼. Thanks GX Bob
Thanks for making this tutorial! Towed an Offgrid teardrop though Escalante worry free thanks to you!
Nice! Thanks for trusting me.
This video, as always, was an excellent guide to the install. I was actually able to install mine without taking the front completely off. I just loosened it and pulled it forward, supporting it on the bottom using some bins I had in the garage. This kept me from having to disconnect all the parking sensors and headlight washers. Would it have been an easier install with the front off? Definitely. But it wasn't bad. Also, if you have the secondary fan on the passenger side of the radiator and don't want to fashion new brackets for your horns, good news. You can just bend the horn brackets back and leave them in the stock location. Plenty of clearance between this secondary cooler and the radiator when you do that. Thanks Bob!
Awesome inputs. Thanks!
Bob, thanks for doing these. You are funny and helpful
I’m glad they were helpful!
Great install and advice👍
Thank you for the extremely detailed instruction!!
You’re welcome!
Killer install. And a serious one to boot! No chafing or gurgling. He he he…
To be honest, it was intimidating at first but had no idea it was so easy to do.
One unexpected (perhaps) benefit of such a cooler installation is that it not only helps the transmission run cooler, but it reduces the heat pushed into the radiator by the transmission fluid, which gives a little more margin in hot weather at keeping the engine at thermostat temperature.
I know of some vehicles/applications where the transmission can push so much heat to the radiator that it can cause the main radiator to overheat. Since the transmission will only drive X amount of temp rise in the fluid at a given load, a reduction in inlet temps to the trans should translate nearly 1:1 into cooler trans outlet temps too (i.e. cooler fluid hitting the radiator).
Thank you for all your gx videos they have been so helpful
@@andrewvhoang any time Andrew! 🍷
thanks bob! you finally did it... this is a big help!!!
Hey GX Dan, i see we share the same first name. GX Bob.
Great work 👏 & video
Bob, you are very clever and this video is most helpful! Thanks!
Nah i'm not clever. I only used this video as a front to show off my babe magnet...The Porsche 911cabriolet. Oh yeah baby. Not exactly sure why i'm still single though. Maybe its because of my douche bag personality.
@@GXBOB Just the same, I'm benefiting from your experience as I just got a 460 and looking ahead to add-ons.
Great setup.
I had one on my water to air setup on my supercharged civic si.
Cool, thanks!
Thanks for this GXBOB, im planning to install one due to temps out here in the desert. My temps got up to 250 during a steep climb and a its a heavy car.
So I’m guessing my cooler for me going to the mall and back is over kill.
@@GXBOB hah, those parking lot in the malls does get pretty steep too lol
Thanks a lot!!! Great job I was able to do this job no problems.
that is awesome casey. i appreciate you using my tutorial do work on your own truck.
EXCELLENT
Thx bob. Did this also a few weeks ago using the 678. Only difference is I bypassed the radiator cooler to eliminate the possibility that coolant will ever mix into the transmission if a leak within the radiator was to ever happen. I’ve had this happen to a pathfinder in the past and I’ve heard it happening to to other vehicles as they get older.
As for results, prior to installing the cooler, the average trans temp was 220 and reached 248 on climbs without towing. Post Hayden the average is 190 and 205 on climbs.
Thx for sharing.
Great video and I wish you posted before I went through it. The hose pliers would have helped a lot.
Btw- I have a premium model therefore I have the rear climate control. Therefore there is an aux fan on the passenger side. The 678 does fit on the drivers side with the horns on the same mounting point. You will need to get an longer bolt though.
Thanks for sharing Rodel. As with many other comments, i learn other facts that i wasn't aware of since i don't own a luxury or premium model. Good to also be aware of potential issues rising out of older trucks like u just mentioned. Who knows, when i get a GX470, i may attempt to take that route.
Is it worth putting a transmission cooler?
I have a FJ which I use mostly for sand driving .
@@kanevivalakane3699 Any load you put on your tranny shortens its life if you don’t keep it performing under ideal temperatures. This includes driving outside the normal realm of flat street daily driving. If you tow additional weight or offroad (includes sand duning) I’d have an aux cooler installed.
@@GXBOB hello bob why don’t just get aftermarket oem is a lot easy to install any reason?
@@skeletronxxprime6277 oem is too small
Just wanted to throw this out there to you. I love your videos. You can buy a KAON Prado 150 trans cooler from Australia. the brackets and everything come with it. Keeps it OEM looking. I did mine in about 10 mins. Super simple.
I’ve reached out to KAON but unfortunately they cannot confirm the fit will work. Can you link the kit you used?
What year GX do you have?
One suggestion- it’s generally advisable to have the inlet on the bottom and outlet at the top. This way any trapped air can more easily flow out of of the system, and you can vent any trapped air at the top port if you want.
thanks for the input G5 !
Hey thanks for the video, I did the same job in my 2015 Lexus GX460 and so far so good everything is alright.
Good to hear. If your transmission blows up let me know so i can delete the video.
We own 3 Toyota products. A gx460 and 2 3rd Gen 4Runners. We have 1.5 million miles between them and amazingly have never changed tyranny fluid.
well.......i just like sleeping better at night, i guess.
@@GXBOB I sleep just fine.
I really like your videos. Very crisp and up to the point. No shaky camera and no missing steps! Thank you. I do have a question. For a first time Lexus buyer, do you recommend GX470 or GX460? Excluding the price as a factor.
If price wasn’t a factor, why wouldn’t you want the newer and more modern truck?
@@GXBOB thank you Bob! Will go for 460 then.
I’ve done this, but not as well. You made a great video!
Thanks, always looking to see if others took the same route. 🍷
Pretty similar but your directions were sooo thorough, detailed and thought out. I was doing a trans fluid exchange, so it just made sense to add this. Just completed a couple of months ago. I sure would’ve loved those long needle nose and hose pliers. I fought with those hoses for way too long!
@@clas2002 damn, i can’t imagine doing this job without both those pliers!
Great content. Keep it up. I live in the CA/AZ desert and see 117+ summer temps with bumper to bumper traffic. Would you recommend adding an aux fan to this trans cooler? Being new to the GX, Im not sure how the fan clutch cooling on the GX will perform as I am used to running electric fans on my trucks.
Hey Bob, love all your videos and learned a lot! This video got me inspired to install a transmission cooler. However, I saw there is another approach of running a bypass to avoid the mixture of fluid. What is the pros and cons of each method in your perspective and have you considered making a video of running a bypass installation for the transmission cooler as well? Thank you and love your contents!
Yo yo yo. Great question. The prospect of that happening is like every 10 to 15 years dude. Go buy yourself a new radiator and install it. The key is to consistently maintain your vehicle and being proactive. There’s alot of stuff i do before things break down. I’m not bypassing anything because what you’re doing is trading one evil for another. I’d rather have optimal tranny temps as opposed to running my tranny before it even has a chance to warm up. Doing that daily will lead to early tranny failure. An external cooler bypass only prolongs this process. An external cooler is only good to keep the tranny from over working while putting a load on your vehicle. You need your radiator daily. You need a cooler only sometimes, if that makes sense. Also keep in mind that liquid to liquid cooling is more optimal than air to liquid. In conclusion, if you want to sleep better at night, install a new radiator every 7 years or so. I call it the 7 year itch.
@@GXBOB thank you for the feedback! You are truly doing the GX community a service man! I learned so much from your channel and love your sense of unapologetic humor! Keep them wine pouring Bob!
Really great video Bob thank you. In your cooler research, did you come across any options that had a bleed screw on top to help make sure the system can be burped after? It seems like the cooler is the high point, so I'd expect any air in the system to get trapped in the cooler. Thanks again, you're the man and nice 991 cab!
Invest in one of these to help you out.
a.co/d/3Aery4A
Just manually continue to burp your system and your system will eventually air out itself.
Quick question where did you get the brackets from and what are they called/part number? Thanks for always putting out great content! You are the best resource for GX on RUclips!
The brackets are custom made. I have one more set. $25 shipped. Just private message me.
@@GXBOBdo you have an email? Sorry can’t figure out how to dm 🤷🏻♂️
Never thought I needed this but I just bought a 2000lb camper and towed it all the way from Tucson to Vegas in 105 deg heat. I wasnt comfortable doing it but had to get a good deal on our camper. I will be doing this mod this coming week. So oem hose clamp was used on the bottom but cheap clamp on top? Thanks for the vid.
i would reuse all the OEM clamps if possible. The ones Hayden provided works but OEM is easier and faster.
Do you know what part number or name of that tube that goes in front of condenser unit on left ? ( See in 39:22 ) need that part , thanks 🙏
I saved this video months ago and the time has come to do it on my GX. With your gained experience, would you add/change anything to this video?
I appreciate all the work you put into these videos and I try my best to socialize your channel with all friends and enthusiasts. If you're ever in TX I owe you some BBQ :)
First of all, California invented bbq. Secondly, I would not tie the 2 horns together. When I honk the vibrations create a really weird sound. I would use thicker foam pieces between the brackets and structure. I would also do a complete radiator flush since I already introduced air into the system. Other than that, I’m quite happy with the install and the trans cooler.
Awesome bud. Great job on the install. I can’t believe it’s so easy. No thermostat or anything else needed. Biggest thing is removing the front bumper. I also have a 21 Tundra with no factory cooler. You think it has the same lines that go into the radiator, which I can tap into?
I can’t answer for Tundras but most all trucks have the same general radiator setup with top and bottom hose . Only difference is the bracket install locations.
@@GXBOB the reason I asked brother was, because every cooler install for 19-21 Tundra on YT is adding a thermostat and bunch more work. In comparison what needs to be done with a GX460. Unless the GX already has a thermostat for the trans fluid already built in?
Great video Bob very detailed. I am from Malaysia, over here we add an extra transmission cooler mainly to avoid radiators coolant leak in the transmission. So what we normally do is just adding another transmission cooler beside the original cooler which is total bypass the radiator.
Like to know what is your opinion about this. Thanks in advance
If you scroll down in the comments I talk about the bypass.
Please do a video on the install of the all aluminum radiator on eBay from Winner Racing.
Hey nytron, i thought about doing that already. Just putting it on my list of stuff to tackle. thanks.
nice job Bob... call me crazy but is there a cooler on the 2021 model I swear I saw 2 rubber tranny lines underneath going to something that looked like a cooler?
I know there is an oem tranny cooler set for the 2021 from the dealer but unless it was sold with an offroad package, i don’t believe it comes with a tranny cooler from the manufacturer.
@@GXBOB like.. I mean the OEM liquid transmission cooler... I thought all GX460 came factory with them?
@@LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD Isn't that the internal system within the radiator??? The transcooler runs inside sharing the same cooling capacity as the radiator coolant. Thats why a people bypass the radiator due to the two mixing in the event the radiator cracks on older vehicles.
Bob, wonder why you would think that you really need the external cooler. As I understand Lexus designed the internal radiator cooler to be sufficient even when towing. Did you measure temperatures before you did the add?
I understand lots of people talk about the trans temps when towing but haven’t seen any clear evidence they get too high, unless for towing up in the Rockies and even then the temp spikes are only for short times.
Any concrete info/evidence on why the external cooler is needed is appreciated.
Thanks
you were an inspiration for my new video.
Hey Bob. Where did you get the stainless for the brackets? What was it normally used for?
The stainless brackets were specifically custom made for the transmission cooler. I have a few more sets if you want to purchase the pair for $25 shipped. PM me.
Bob I need some help finding a part(s) for both driver and passenger side supporting the radiator. I have searched radiator support/bracket/arm, can’t find anything…It is a support that attaches on either side at the mid high point on the front radiator with two screws into the radiator and then it appears to rest on the “radiator support bar by simply sitting in the crook of the lower part of the support with a piece of foam. No diagrams no luck anywhere. I would appreciate your help! The two pieces hide behind the power steering cooler line at the height of the radiator support bar. The videos are awesome
you know there are plenty of sites you can find people parting out their GX or junkyards have networks that can locate the part for you.
Beware of nylock in areas where there’s any kind of significant heat. High temp loctite is likely to be more reliable.
thanks for the input!
@GXBOB would this pretty much be the same process with the 698 model? Even adding mor fluid to the cooler? TIA
Same process but different brackets than the ones I used.
Metal edge protector seems like it’ll work to protect the hoses going through the radiator section.
The protection was required throughout the length of both hoses. The loom worked well. Edge protector is found to be unique to only the radiator wall cut-out. I started padding the cut-out before i realized there were so many different areas the hose could chafe besides just the cut-out.
@@GXBOB thank you for giving me confidence. I will tackle this soon.
@@pennmikael easy peezy lemon squeezy.
@@GXBOB I finally completed this install this weekend. I made brackets using 1/8" aluminum- what a PITA to make without the right tools. I lost all the fluid while connecting the bottom line and ended up doing a trans fluid level check, which was good since it allowed me to check fluid condition as well.
why don't you have a cooling fan on the right side? did you remove it?
I have a base model. It doesn't come with a fan. It came with absolutely nothing. It is so minimal in options that even the dealer was surprised i wanted it. I chose the base because it gave me more opportunities to work with and add custom accessories to.
👍🙏
great video. which battery terminals are those? i like them!

Bob: Unless I missed it, did you mention where you sourced the bracket metal strips? I'm sure my local industrial supply store would carry something similar, but curious where you got yours?
I was selling the set of 2 for people that messaged me in the side for $25. I had a machine shop fab the brackets. Recently a corner of my garage burned down from a self ignited battery charger. My entire lot of brackets melted. I’m going to see if I can have them fabbed again.
@@GXBOB Oh shit! Very sorry to hear that and now I am paranoid as I have two vehicles in my garage with battery maintainers hooked up. Thanks for at least providing the dimensions...I may see what local shop around San Diego could do for me. Although...it seems like you could make something similar by cutting thicker sheet metal with tin snips and bending the corners in a vice. Stainless steel is obviously way superior.
I’m interested in a set of brackets
I'm also interested in a set of brackets. Might take awhile for Bob to get enough demand to consider having the machine shop do a run of brackets though...
Bob...did you "consult" with Hayden on the sizing of the cooler. Seems a lil big compared the factory one or on the Tundra. Since it's been a year. What is your overall experience with it now? Would you do it again?
Cheers
The general rule of thumb is to choose a cooler that is rated for at least three times the weight of the trailer you are towing. My travel trailer being a little under 2000lbs makes the Hayden 678 almost within the proper size range for the stuff i tow and I also considered the amount of towing i do. I think the Lexus oem one is a joke and is really meant for daily city driving without serious consideration to towing boats/trailers uphill to Big Bear in the middle of summer. I am still running my Hayden 678 and according to my tranny cooler temps, i can seriously say i sleep better at night.
@@GXBOB I didn't mean the trans-cooler built into the radiator. There are some GX460's and I think all GX470's have an external cooler. Driver's side near the horns. Also you did isolate the S/S bracket from the aluminum?
That's a big corrosion problem waiting to happen. (stainless to Al)
Thx
Great vid Bob. It’s pretty clear you did a lot of research before you did this mod, and we all benefit. Questions: 1) Did you go back almost to step one and install the protective loom? 2) Did u have special tools to make the brackets? How thick is the ss? 3) I’m willing to purchase a set of brackets if your willing to make a set.
Mike, 1) I had to go back to install the loom after putting the bumper back because i didn't want to lose momentum. I would have to pack everything up (filming equipment, tables, stands, parts, etc...). If i took my other car i had nobody to stay and watch my stuff not get stolen. 2) The SS bracket thickness was roughly 1/32". I had a metal fabricator make the bracket for me as a favor, but that is overkill. You can just buy a sheet of metal from your local hardware store and dremel one out yourself w/ a cutting wheel. Use a pair of pliers and table vice to bend them into shape. I would have to ask my fabricator if he is interested in doing some side business but i'll get back to you.
Ok thanks Bob,

i can't use my GX as an example, but i had a toyota sienna tranny solenoid go out and all we had to do was drop the pan and replace the solenoids. They were fairly easy and straightforward installation. I probably won't do a video on that unless my solenoids fail themself but the answer is, NO, solenoids do not get rebuilt, they get replaced.

What year is the GX? I want to install one of these as I will be towing. I have a 2023.
2017
Maybe one other point to your configuration: Since it is blocking part of the radiator, that passthrough air will be a lot cooler once it reaches the radiator than if it were first in line for ATF cooling. The other configuration would be blowing hot air all over your radiator thus decreasing its own engine cooling ability and probably making the cooling fan work alot harder. Also the air blockage my be an argument for a smaller cooler though. Finally, that horn configuration will decrease your overall horn performance by 3.27 dB.
Damn blang, i appreciate the extra knowledge sharing.
@@GXBOB Overall it would be interesting to see if the average engine temps increase while the ATF temps decrease. If the engine temps are pretty much the same before and after the install then we are solid gold.

I thought the gx460 had a built in transmission cooler already? I installed one of these on my 3rd gen 4runner and it worked great
Are you talking about the sorry excuse of a cooler that's built into the radiator? Or are you referring to the external OEM tranny coolers only offered in the US market as an option starting in 2020 for Luxury trims w/Offroad package? Either way, an aftermarket transmission cooler to supplement the "extra" plumbing embedded in your radiator is the better choice if you are doing off-roading or towing, especially in hot weather.
@@GXBOB I saw a comment on reddit that I misinterpreted to think all of the luxury gx's facelift onward in the US had the OEM coolers. Knowing now that my 2016 has the POS one built into the radiator I am 100% doing this mod again for my GX, butim going to totally bypass the radiator like I did with my 4runner.

Go to my profile and my email address is there. I had a garage fire recently and my stock burned to the ground. I am currently getting my fab guy to make more.
Anything on the 12-volt solution remote starter?
I hate to say this but systems such as 12volt are plug and play which limits many other options that are programmable. An important feature needed to keep your engine running when u disarm your vehicle requires a double pulse to your vehicle's disarm input. I've heard so many issues relating to this. I reached out to 12volt but was unable to get a sample unit in order to diagnose for their customers.
What issue are having? I installed a remote starter and it has been working flawlessly for a little less than a year. I use it everyday in the winter months in breezy New England and some times in the summer.
How much difference does it make to the transmission temperature?
Can you pls make a video on that

@@GXBOB sure .thanks Sir
@@kanevivalakane3699 So i'm doing a lot of eye brow raising because my tranny is running cooler towards the low end of the spectrum between 185-190 while towing on 4th gear. But then again, i never looked at the temps prior to the tranny cooler install so i have nothing to compare it to.
Great video and explanation Bob. Gonna need to do that myself as i tow my camper
I bet you my camper is bigger than your camper. Thats why i get all the hot babes.
How much cooler does it get from this install?
20-40 degrees cooler. I pull a boat and a 3400 lb travel trailer uphill so any amount of temp drop is beneficial.
And very important details, I recommend bypass the radiator,
George i don’t recommend it. I prefer to switch out my radiator before the average fail life of 100k. Preferably with an all aluminum or new Denso. Doing a bypass actually harms your tranny more than it does good by switching from liquid/liquid cooling to air/liquid cooling which is less optimal. Plus promotes early tranny failure by not allowing your tranny to warm up efficiently at every start up.
You make this job to complex.
