- Can I break 90? - EVERY SHOT IN 20 MINUTES
A round of winter golf at Maesdu golf club in Llandudno, North Wales. It's a par 72 championship course that is a blend of parkland and links. The club was founded in 1915 and James Braid was the course designer.
The green fees were £20 for 18 holes in February 2022.
I'm James, a golfer with a dodgy swing now playing off an 15 handicap. I had taken 3 golf lessons to improve my swing on the day of play.
I'm looking to continuously break 90 on the courses I play. Even if I don't shoot a good score I always enjoy strolling around the fairways of North Wales, UK :-)

Hey James, I think you should event a new game called 'lip out' or 'slide by'. You'd be the world champion! This could have been an amazing score if a few more of those 'slide-by-ers' had dropped...and if that man hadn't shouted 'fooooour!' Great scenary. Great video. Thanks for posting
You sound like someone I play with!
We all have days like that with a stone cold putter - find the way you shoot and edit your videos and your commentary so relaxing, makes for a really enjoyable watch!
It was a tough day with the flat stick for sure. That 4 footer lip out on the first really set the tone for the day! Thanks for watching
Another solid score James, imagine if your putting was just a bit better what you would have scored!
Must say again your approach and chipping is brilliant, it gives you a chance on every hole. Keep up the good work 👍
I've been inspired by you and others to make a video of my own, hopefully ready to upload in a couple of days 🤞
Cheers, good luck with your channel! :-)
Always gotta be happy with 90. Can't be displeased with bogey golf! Another great vid.
I'm lucky if I can get out two times in a month to golf. So being a high handicapper I know I'll never lower my handicap much, if at all. And I'm OK with that. I think that's why I like your videos. You let us high handicappers live vicariously through your progression on the course. Your improvement is enjoyable to watch. And impressive in such a short time. 👍
Cheers Mark, I'm going to take some more lessons soon to try and improve further. Thanks for watching
Well done James. Your whole game is improving massively. Very unfortunate with a few lip outs!
You always make it look so effortless James! Another solid round 👍🏼 would love to have a round with you sometime mate
Cheers mate, good luck with your channel! :-)
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 thank you mate! And you 👏🏼
Golf is a funny game. Your putting was off today as you remarked. But then again your drives were on point. Greens in regulation were up. That’s what is unique about golf. You tell yourself I know I can do better. Even when you do go out and shoot the best game ever, there were shots or areas of your game you know you could be better at and could have shot a lower score. Enjoyed going along watching your game.
Thank you for the fun as i am here in Canada waiting for the snow to melt, this is the second one of your videos i have watched. My one suggestion after watching both videos is try a different putter. Keep postin i like your camera work its smooth and enjoyable.
Thank you James for sharing what you learned. It's the small things that help us improve. R.
Hi James, just started watching your videos, absolutely brilliant. I play off 15.9 and I can feel your pain every time those putts slide past.... one day it will all come together for both of us and we could break 80 I know it. Keep working on the short game that’s where us medium hitters will get them.
Great videos James. As a mid handicapper it's nice to see how others at a similar level play. Please keep posting, looking forward to seeing how your game progresses... and I wish I had your short game!
Thanks for sharing James. Lovely views, especially towards the end. Just wasn’t your day on the greens.
Thanks for taking us along for the round! As someone who is at a similar level, it is quite enjoyable to watch your round as it happens :). I have a question! As someone who makes videos myself, I am wondering what tool you use to track/show your ball flight digitally on screen? Thanks!
Shot Tracer pro app. Thanks for watching :-)
Nice round on one of my favourite courses James. I don’t think the condition of the greens, as good as they were for February, did you any favours. You have certainly whetted my appetite now and I can’t wait to get back there next May. Cheers, Jim.
Nice solid drives, course with beautiful views, happy days! good round mate, keep at it.
We all have these days with putting. Always the same when irons are doing well, woods or putting goes out of the window! Got to love this game.
Spot on mate. Golf is the hardest game that's for sure! Thanks for watching
Enjoyed the golf James. Very impressed with the video work! You captured the beauty of the course and surroundings. Great editing too.
I don't think you putted too badly here, just never had much luck till the end. 3 putting from 25 or 40 feet and missing 5 and 6 footers isn't bad putting, statistically it's quite likely at this level. Incredible how much you've improved this last few months. Nothing better than walking on To the 18th and repairing a pitchmark close to the hole.
Brilliant content again James! Amazing views too very lucky to play there!
Let’s gooooooo James. Watching your videos are super therapeutic. Keep it up!
I love your content James! It really is down to Earth and enjoyable to watch. Your commentary is great and the time you put into editing is superb. Keep up the great work and keep'em coming. I can't wait for summer golf!
I can't wait for summer golf too! haha :-)
Hi James really good and consistent with the driver and decent tee to green. Just one of those days with the putter I'm afraid and we all have them! Good score considering the conditions keep it going and you'll be low 80's in no time at all.
Mark
Another amazing game. Too bad your putting wasn’t with you that day. Keep up the good work James.
Love the content, I must admit I don't watch them all but wish I had the patience to chart my progress like this. Well done. Oh and nice course.
Well done James.Cant believe you were unlucky enough to get so many lip outs. Never mind though James one day they will all fall for a brilliant round. keep up all your hard work mate, love watching you improve...
Your short game is very good especially your putting, once or twice you putted from the fringe and left the ball short, I would always use a 7 iron in those situations with a putting stroke, it lifts the ball over the fringe and the ball rolls out well, at least it does some times !!! cheers.
'Why were you late to the meeting, Malcolm?'
'Er I wanted to see if James could break 90...'.
Nice round of golf and I love how you keep a level head no matter what.
Well Done James, you kept at it and got your just rewards at the end, good finish with two pars on 17 & 18.
Yeah, I kind of gave up on the scorecard towards the end and then 2 birdie chances suddenly appeared. That's golf! Thanks for watching
Great video James - always look forward to Friday's. Putting had an off day this round, you'll get it next round.
Cheers Roger, thanks for watching
Great video James, Golf in North Wales looks pretty fun. Nice score, and looking forward to the next video
Thanks for making the video James. Always a nice way to start my Friday morning by watching your golf video. Putter not being very nice that day. But, nice finish over the final few holes. And the views were amazing! If you ever get out to the Bay Area in California, I’ll treat you to a round of golf! Cheers!
Cheers David, thanks for the offer! :-)
Enjoyed the round James. Nice to see you have 3 pars to offset the doubles. A bogey round is always good. I wanted to kick the ball in for you on a couple of those close putts that wouldn't drop. Looking forward to next weeks round. As Danny Maude says, "have a great golfing week".
Cheers Dan, I definitely lost a few strokes with the putter on this day but the tee to green game was ok and made up for it! :-) Thanks for watching
Great score James and this is a perfect video to showcase HOW important putting is. If you have your normal JAMES day (you're a good putter) you're looking at 86 here, which is phenomenal score for our level. Great video sir, I enjoyed watching it and can't wait for the next one next Friday! :)
Cheers Norman, thanks for watching
Nice video, itching to get back out but it has been 60 degrees and sunny one day but snowing the next :/
Well Done James. Of all the courses you've played this one is my favorite, just beautiful. Being outside and playing a game you can never master, but always trying to improve is what its all about. You have improved on your slice it seems. That's my challenge too. I see you said you took a couple lessons, what were a couple things you learned that helped you to improve your shot?
Yeah, I always enjoy my rounds at Maesdu and find the course a tough but fair challenge.
After my first lessons I did a grip change (stronger grip), alignment change (more square to target), takeaway change (right hand palm facing up) and follow through change (extend out to the right after impact).
It definitely improved my game and I plan to take more lesson soon to hopefully improve further! Thanks for watching Gregg
Views approaching Hole 14 are absolutely amazing James. You'd love the West coast of Ireland so if you are very here let me know as I'd love to play with you... And, eh, yeah...that Hole 15 haha
Cheers mate, I'd love to do a golfing tour of Ireland one day, so many great courses you have over there. Thanks for watching
James is there anyway you can turn your shoulders a bit more in the backswing and get another foot to a foot and a half past parallel. You're not getting the low point after the ball most of the time. That's why most of your shots are too low. That good one at the end with the hybrid caught the low point either on or after the strike which is good. Simple weight transfer/pressure onto the lead leg helps a lot.
Thanks for the tip, definitely lots to improve on with my dodgy swing! :-)
Really solid round and just one of those times when the puts won’t drop. Sadly no golf today for me it rained all day in Wiltshire. Hope you were able to get on the course this week. ⛳️
Cheers Mark, yeah I managed to squeeze a round in this week. Just in February I only played 18 holes twice all month and that might have affected the putting on this day. Hope the courses in Wiltshire dry out fast for you mate! Thanks for watching
Another great round cheers
Hi James, you were due a bit of luck with that roll back into the hole. Well played on a lovely looking course.
Cheers Daniel, even if the score is not good you can definitely admire the scenery on that course! haha :-) Thanks for watching
Lovely shot into the 18th green - never hurts to save a good one for any clubhouse spectators :)
Yeah, if anyone was watching they must have thought I went round sub 80 haha :-)
Any round with no trips is good in my game! Good job 👍👴🇺🇸🦅
Good round! You improve in every video!
Thank you James nice video really enjoy it
Made some really good contact with your driver today. Sometime I really need to work on.
You got warmed up going on to the last hole, James. Well done.
I really like the elevated tee shot on the last so I think it helped with the focus. Thanks for watching :-)
Good round. Your drives are consistently longer it seems. I understand your pain on the three putts. Well done.
GIR and 3 putt, every golfers nightmare! haha :-)
Good grinding ! 👍 unlucky with the putting...
Beautiful sunset views as well.
Cheers Alexis, thanks for watching
I feel for you with the lip outs. We've all been there. You were definitely owed the one that sneaked in.
Do you have a favorite club in your bag? It seems to me like you hit your sand wedge the most consistently. You are money when you use it around the green. I need to develop a relationship like that with one of my clubs. I bought a new set of irons this winter so I will see what happens if the snow ever melts here in the northeast. The scenery is beautiful also.
I use the 54° SW for everything 60 yards and in and it is probably my most reliable club. I do practice it in the garden with different shots, so that helps on the course as I don't have to think. Good luck with your rounds for 2022 and thanks for watching
I was playing on Thursday in Scotland. It is hard to play out of the bunkers because of the weather.
Love watching all your videos James! You should do a WITB!
Coming very soon
Good solid round.Well played. Unfortunate that your putter wasn't working as normal. I reckon that you could have shaved 4 or 5 shots.
Super consistent; tee to green.
Gaining a lot more distance with the driver now. Chipping and putting solid as ever even tho the putts didn’t quite drop for you on this round. I’d like to see your next step be to challenge yourself on a course not so open maybe with proper treelined either side. Well played pal.
Cheers, there are parkland videos from Northop, Rhuddlan & Denbigh on this channel where I am playing to a similar standard. Very tight if you miss a fairway! Thanks for watching
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 sorry pal maybe some crossed wires I wasn’t for once suggesting you wouldn’t play to a similar handicap. I just like those type of tough courses and feel it’s harder to recover and a right good challenge. Enjoying watching your journey very similar to my own. Would be good to get a game if you’re ever in Scotland 👍🏼
Another great video. Do you have playing partners when you make the videos??
Good round, James! Boy, i thought the approach on 5 was getting in ! Great to finish with 2 pars and so satisfying i guess to reach the 18th green in regulation. Good practice for Celtic Manor next summer😉 ?
Cheers Thierry, after the last hole I was buzzing on cloud nine thinking I'm ready for my tour card! haha :-)
Loved that last hole. Well played again, a few bounces and bobbles which will not be there on smooth summer greens. I feel an 82 or 83 is easily achievable
Yeah, I think I could probably squeeze out an 84 as I've played front 9s in +2 and +4 this year already. I didn't film those rounds unfortunately! :-)
James you have to work to do on your backswing with the driver and fairway woods, but you hit it pretty straight and your short game is neat, so you are in perfect bandit country :-)
Always lots to improve on with golf that's why we love it! :-)
Top course that if i lived in Wales I'd join not played Conwy yet though see u drives goin abit longer get through it pal don't stop on follow through that's wen slice comes in well done m8
Cheers mate, a round at Conwy is coming soon on this channel! :-)
Nice round, unlucky with the putting. Got to love golf sometimes.
One thing that works very good for me in putting is: Make a practice swing and try to imagine where the ball is going, if you like it do the strike, if not do another.
Can't wait to visit my family in Leicester.. UK courses are beautiful. Also, don't let these vultures tell you that you need to improve this and that. Just keep grinding, there's a single digit capp in you.
James, this is so enjoyable over a cup of coffee. I wish i was as proficient with my chipping as you are
Cheers mate, I do practice my chipping and I often rely on it to save the scorecard! Thanks for watching
Hi James. Have you considered having a larger grip on your putter. might help with the short putts.
Thanks for the suggestion. I might change the putter if the troubles continue and will definitely try out the larger grips. Hopefully this day was just a one off!
This is fantastic. What software do you use for the shot tracers? Thanks man
15th hole putt.......GET IN !!! Nice round.
Ground out another decent round James. Well played. Could just be the editing, but didn't see you lining up after a missed putt? May help a bit?👌👍👍
Cheers Mark, it was the editing I line up and do 2 practice swings on each putt. Just a bad day with the flat stick! Thanks for watching
I think you should maybe try putting with the pin out all of your putts, especially when playing in the wind. The flaf moving can make the hole feel like a small target. You also lip out alot, which could be an unconscious attempt to not hit the pin in some cases? A few more of these drop and your handicap will too.
Yeah, I used to leave the pin in for pace of play but taking it out more often is a good idea. Thanks for watching
Enjoyed that, enjoying drier weather too....what make are your hybrids, just curious
Cheers, WITB coming very soon
Well played James. Would be interested to know what balls, and irons you use?
WITB coming very soon mate
What happened to the putting today - normally a real strength for you James, couldn't buy one today!?? But again, great context, really enjoyed watching your round
Yeah, the only putt I seemed to hole was the 8 footer on the 16th. Definitely something to work on but the bobbly greens didn't help. Thanks for watching
Are some of those tee boxes mats? If so, are they temporary tee boxes? I'd really enjoy playing with you...I'm a 15 handicap with a very similar, quick pace of play :-)
Wow, James! You've gained so much distance with your driver! A bit more luck with the putter and today would have been spectacular! Keep it up!
Cheers Randy, hopefully a spectacular score will come sooner rather than later! haha :-)
21:09 Memorable. Great imagination!!!!
great video
I screamed "yea" when that ball dropped in on the 15th
Hard to say 'unlucky' when you played solid James but you had no real luck on the greens at all 😔
Nice vlog again...smash it next Friday 👊👊👊
Cheers Kent, there's always next week! :-)
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 even next day, next round, next putt 😉
Hey James watched you for a bit now and I’ve always been curious about your swing. I feel like you defiantly don’t bring it back as far as most golfers and I was curious is that was due to physical limitations or just preference? Great video btw.
I will be changing the takeaway soon to add more distance. Lots to improve on with my dodgy swing! haha :-)
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 for sure great videos as always my man.
The greens looked rather furry James. Tough conditions good round.
nice got your 3 pars...
Yah, James. Your putter was ice cold. I know you’re enamored with that 22° but it always goes right. You’re really going to have to make a concerted effort to aim more left when you pull that club. It was a good round. Putter just not there for you. Give it a good whacking! 😉
Cheers Paul, thanks for the advice! :-)
Solid round there - imagine how much lower you could have shot if your putting was working
Yeah, I think I can shoot 84 right now if every aspect of my game is good. Golf is definitely a tough game! haha :-) Thanks for watching
Way to close it out with a par! Pity the flat stick wasn't working, but way to grind.
Greens looked a bit agricultural, a few bobbles and inconsistent speed, so not surprised you struggled. Otherwise nice round, and that 3rd shot into the last green was pro-quality 😀😀
Yeah, it's winter golf so you can't expect perfection. At least it was open and the green fees were lower. Hitting a 170 yard shot to 15 ft is definitely not something I am used to! Thanks for watching
Clutch finish!
Could have been birdie / birdie ! :-)
Is the app for the tracer apple or a device?
Great round and once again with a little more luck then it could have been 5 or more shots less.
Theory, your putts are lipping out because you are subconsciously trying not to hit the flagstick. Try taking them out more often, if that's allowed under your current COVID rules. Good video though, shows how we should be thinking with mid to higher handicap
golf is hard when the putter is not your friend 😂😂 we all have those days
I can see a stealth Taylor made driver give me you ops on it
Hey, what iron you chip with..?
54°
Nice round James. As always thanks for sharing I luv seeing golf in whales.
By my count, you gave up 5 strokes from 3 ft and in. The good news is that a few hours on the putting green can fix that. Then, all of a sudden, you're shooting 85! Love your vids James...keep them coming.
James., you’ll shave a few strokes once the weather warms up. Teeing off at 6 degrees isnt helpful to your game.
Yeah, the front 9 was definitely chilly on this day! Thanks for watching
Putting is ruining your scoring . Hitting behind the ball is getting you too. Two easy areas to practice more.
Very strange, although your puts didn't drop, you didn't actually take that many puts in 34. 🤷♂️👍⛳
Yeah, there were 3 three putts but the 5 one putts made up for them!
Hey buddy. You're not supposed to wear a glove while putting... FYI
It's fine to do that, it is up to the player and he normally putts very well.
Just over half way in and this is not your best putting day
