- This is a short video of five other Bobby Orr assists from the 1976 Canada Cup, on goals by Bobby Hull, Reggie Leach, Peter Mahovlich, Bob Gainey, and Guy Lafleur. (An Orr helper to his former teammate Phil Esposito is elsewhere on this playlist, as are his two goals in the tournament.)
The Hall of Fame Boston Bruins defenseman, playing in his first international competition (and basically skating on one leg because of knee trouble), was named the tourney's Most Valuable Player with two goals, seven assists, and his usual stellar defensive play.
The first assist here, to Hull, was in a Sept. 2 round robin game vs. Finland at the Ottawa Civic Centre, as Team Canada won its opener, 11-2.
The second helper, to Leach, was also in the game against Finland. Orr double-clutches, then fires a rocket that Leach tips in from the side of the net.
The third assist, to Mahovlich, came in a 4-2 Sept. 5 win vs. the United States. The goaltender can't get back in position after stopping an Orr blast from the point, and Mahovlich puts in the rebound.
The fourth assist comes on the second of defensive stalwart Gainey's two goals in a 4-0 Sept. 7 win over Sweden. Orr (not Gainey, as the announcer says) fires the puck behind the net to Darryl Sittler, who centers to Gainey, who flicks it home.
Finally, in the first game of the best-of-three final against Czechoslovakia, won by the Canadians, 6-0, Orr executes a great keep-in, then passes to Steve Shutt, whose shot is blocked. But Lafleur corrals the rebound in the slot and fires it home. When Orr joins the post-goal scrum, he punches his left fist in celebration. Bobby said Team Canada's tournament win was more cherished than either of his two Stanley Cups, and the joy with which he celebrates his teammates' goals certainly reflects that.
I don't know who holds the copyright to this clip. I don't claim the rights to, and don't profit from, this video. I just posted it for historical and educational purposes, and for those who will enjoy it as much as I did.
Orr's knees were pretty much gone by this time.....I remember the Hockey media saying he played this series on one leg and was still the best player out there!....
Yep! Incredible, as that Canadian team was a wagon, as they say!
Valuable video 📹 ❤
Just imagine if Orr and Hull played in 1972.
Exactly!
Just imagine if Orr never paid for a full page add in a major newspaper endorsing donald Trump....Hero to Zero!!
@@FOXLIES Sounds like you have a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. You poor thing. So brave to come out of your safe space to comment on Bobby Orr. I didn't know that Orr did that. He was already a hero to me. Now you just convinced me that he's the ultimate legend.
Orr was a great player, and will always be remembered for it. Trump , … greatest president your country ever had. So he backed President Trump? He liked his leadership, policies, and where he took the country. Are you happy with that perverted, hair smelling, open border, sleepy creepy non leader Biden….and his pathetic international dealings and showings? No joke.@@FOXLIES
@@FOXLIES is the zero in fact minus zero its about hockey you dope.
Love how people in the crowd wore suits and ties, dresses etc. Not like today
Interesting to see highlights from the Canada-Finland game. This game is not on the official DVD set. It's considered to be "lost" from what I understand.
I'm sure I just found one of the few clips that is out there; I don't have the complete game.
That team in 1972 beats the Soviets 7 games to 1.
And Mahovlich and Leach are not in the HHF, bloody shame
Why would Reggie Leach be in the HOF? An ok career, similar to dozens who aren’t in. Btw, your handle/name is offensive and immature. Show some manners.
@@chr970 Why is it offence?
Bobby was another level of course. I love him as a Canadian and we share a birthday which I brag about in humour from time to time. However he was past his prime here and these assists are not good examples of his greatness. In fact most of these assists are unclean...that is to say such things as rebounds off opposing players are counted as assists....unclean. Better examples can be found. No offence Bob.
He might agree. But how courageous of him to play.
unclean?? Orr calmly held a puck in amd perfectly back handed it to the sweet high slot for an easy lafleur goal.
on the pp Orr expertly put a snapshot off of rick leaches stick for a deflection into the net. all leach had to do was put his stick down and Orr hit it. Orr stood right up at the blue line and dumped which led to an easy pass out to gainey for a easy goal
what game are you watching ??
@@brianmoore5498 A spirited defense of the great No. 4! Love it! I was too lazy to go back and look.
I used to like Bobby Orr until he paid for a full page add in a major newspaper endorsing Donald trump...Since then , not so much
I was angry, too. But I'm a forgiving type and I'm able to separate what athletes are on and off the ice.
i too was upset with Orr supporting don the con. i respect him for what he did on the ice fifty years ago still
@@brianmoore5498 HERO TO ZERO
Good grief. Get over it, junior.
@@humphreygruntwhistle3946 Oh Im over it , but I never forget
