Almost forgot the magic that this man had!!!!! Even though not a Boston fan, you cannot deny that he was and still the best player that ever lived!!!! Even today!!
Bobby Orr thank you sooooooo much for those amazing memories!!!!!! You WILL ALWAYS BE THE GREATEST EVER BOBBY, we will always love you !!!!! Thanks for the memories !!! Hockey is not the same with you there my hero!!!!!
I'm from Boston, and I saw Bobby's entire career. Short as it was. He was incredible! There was nothing he couldn't do. He was the best ever. Not even close!
I agree and I am from Philly. In 1974 if the Bruins had not lost McKenzie, Stanfield, Cheevers and Sanderson to the WHA and if the Flyers did not recover Parent from that league, the Bruins would have won that series 4 to 0.
The only reason Bobby Orr seemed to be great should be obvious though it's mainly due to the ridiculously horrible defending from the defensemen!!!!!!!!! If Orr tried to skate around some of the more modern defenses say like the defense of the Colorado Avalanche when the Avalanche won the cup with Patrick Roy and Larry Foote as one of the defenseman than Bobby Orr would look impotent!!!!!!! Or would Bobby Orr be able to break tru the impenetrable defense from when the Detroit Red Wings won the cup??????? I doubt it!!!!!!!!!!
As an Australin it was bobby orr that introduced me to the greatest game in the world. I fell in love with the sabres from the day but no one was more influential in my love for hockey than Orr
Bobby Orr is the best I've ever seen, bar none, and I have been watching hockey for the past 45-plus years. The guy brought you out of your seat every time the puck was on his stick.
@@daveygivens735 The record for defenseman scoring was 59 points when Bobby came in the league. He scored over 100 points six years in a row, he lead the league in scoring twice...all while winning 8 consecutive awards for best defenseman in the NHL. He is the only player in the NHL to ever accomplish being the scoring champion as a defenseman and he did it twice. That's never been duplicated. He also won all four major awards in the NHL in the same year...at 22 years old. That also was never done before and has never been duplicated. He shattered records and completely changed the way the game is played today. There is no one better...and there never will be.
Bobby Orr is the greatest player to have ever laced skates! He raised the bar for everyone... raised the game for all his teammates... and did it all gracefully & with honour that few players have ever exhibited. He could play hard; and fight hard, if he had to. I feel blessed to have seen him play in his best days.
Mich psyphon and he sold hockey all the way to california.he should have owned a piece of the league but retired broke.swindled by criminals and business men
5 Orr's against 5 Gretzky's no contest the Orr's would win everytime. Why? Because Orr could play both ends of the ice and could do everything else better! Orr used to kill penalties by holding onto the puck and skating circles around the opposition!
Got to see Orr play in 1966, his first season. It was his first season and it was at the old Boston Garden against the Rangers - 2-2 . I am proud to share his birthday (MARCH 20). Orr is the greatest of all time!!
Growing up in Boston during the Orr years was amazing. He was the most complete player ever. He could fly on skates, had an extremely hard and accurate shot, passed like a forward, played defense like a demon and was tough!
My life hasnt been what I hoped it would be. I haven't accomplished all I wanted to. But I THANK GOD that I was a young boy in Massachusetts at the very right time to see this amazing man and this amazing team play, win, lose and triumph. If my life NEVER had anything in it but the memories of watching Bobby and the Bruins I'd call it good. It was THAT amazing to watch.
My older brother and sister went to school with Bobby in Oshawa (O Neil) They would tell me Bobby would have a crowd around him all the time but if you said hi to Bobby he would stop and and say hi back and how was your day. Very down to earth. He was a super star even back then when he played for the Oshawa Generals my home town. Bobby Orr is a class act and always will be!!!!!!
It was amazing growing up watching Bobby Orr and the Bruins play hockey when I was growing up. Orr was every New England kid's hero. Orr is a great guy.too..humble and easy going, and has done so much for sick kids and others throughout his life.
I was always a passionate Gordie Howe fan, though its easy to acknowledge such marvelous greats like Gretzky, Hull, & other giants of hockey. But Bobby Orr was so jaw-dropping to watch: his wind up in his own zone & charge to the opposition net could bring out the goose bumps. He was a class act both on & off the ice: loyal, tough, humble, always hard working, & talent reaching to the nose-bleed sections.
Years back, Gordie Howe was talking about the game, and somehow the conversation got around to discussing Orr, and Howe said that the greatest blow to the NHL as a league in his lifetime/career was the premature retirement of Bobby Orr due to injuries. That's quite an endorsement from the man they call "Mr.Hockey," and himself often mentioned as the greatest player ever. Gretzky and Lemieux may have been the greatest point-producers of all time, but the greatest all-around player in the history of the game must be either Howe or Orr. The nod probably goes to Orr for the manner in which he utterly transformed and modernized the game.
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 Well said. I feel better now reading a fair, intelligent, non-biased fact based opinion on who should be considered as the greatest of all-time. That unbelievably ignorant rant by ghytgb or whatever his testicle filled handle is got old quick. 🤧
Imagine if you will: Howe -Gretzky- Bossy Gillies - Mario - Richard (Maurice) 3rd line: Ovechkin - Messier- Lafleur Punishers - line 4- Probert Dale Hunter- Bertuzzi Dare to dream
Bobby had an endless stream of creativity. The moves were real time and creative. Between he and Larry Legend, Boston was blessed with a lot of unforgettable moments.
There will never be another Bobby Orr...a player combined with incredible talent, matched only by his genuine humility. What he did on the offensive side of the game while not missing a beat on the defensive end is unfathomable. No one had ever done that...no one had ever considered it to be an option. Winning the scoring title twice while winning the best defensive player in the league is beyond comprehension. One guy stated that as being the equivalent of a pitcher winning the home run title in the major leagues. One thing he missed is that it would have to be the Cy Young winner...not just a pitcher. Never has and never will happen.... but that's what Bobby Orr did. And he did it at 22 years old on one good leg. Just unbelievable!
Rob, what does Philly fan have to do with it?? Obviously not a student of this era of hockey. Orr played when their were 6 teams in the East. Orr had many rivals, The Broad street Bullies being one of them. Coffy was great, but could he single handedly kill a penalty and then score. Coffy , no way
I am a born and raised DETROIT RED WING fan but it was such a delight to watch Bobby Orr just GLIDE around the ice and other players, that was a treat to watch. He also had a natural born instinct to know where his team mates were at all time. I was sad to see him retire so young but lets not forget about Mr. Hockey even though he played in a different era.
Thanks so much for recognizing his greatness and not letting partisan politics get in your way ;-) I think Howe is the only one who had the same (or greater?) combo of skill and toughness.
From this Flyers fan, he was the best I ever saw in any sport. Kate Smith sings God Bless America for the Flyers vs The Bruins in Game 6 of The Cup Finals in 1974 at The Spectrum. The first person to greet her on the ice after she sung it? Bobby Orr.
@@dumisatonyjohnson8145 Gretzky is top three of all time. Mario and Gretzky are tied for second place but take up two spots. Orr is the G.O.A.T. Anyone who actually understands the game of hockey knows this.

He was my favorite athlete in all sports. I did book reports about him in grade school. A class act through and through. I was lucky enough to caddy for him years later at a celebrity golf tournament, it was the biggest thrill of my young life at the time. He was as nice as you think he would be. Growing up in Boston, and played hockey myself, it was thee greatest thing that could have happened for a kid like me. 50 years later, I still cherish his greatness as a player and as a such a nice man to a kid like me. I was so lucky.
Possibly, but all the players were more humble back then. And that makes sense, today players earn generational wealth in a single season. Give a 22 year old instant generational wealth and it's not surprising that it affects their personality.
I grew up in New England. Watched every Orr game on WSBK TV38. Bobby Orr is the greatest athlete of my lifetime. Bobby Hull said that Orr was playing on one leg in 1976. Even on one leg, he was still the greatest hockey player in the world.
I know right? He was just so good compared to everyone on the ice. An alien from another galaxy would notice that #4 was better than anyone else, never seen sports before, but it was just that clear. They didn't keep +/- then but I've heard he would have had about plus 140 or so. Too bad he got hurt, it didn't last nearly as long as it should have.
Pardon the correction, but know that I'm on your side. I grew up in the Boston area, and am a certifiable Orr bigot. Wikipedia: "The NHL's Montreal Canadiens were the first team to track the plus−minus of its players, starting sometime in the 1950s. Bobby Orr played on one bad knee his whole career. Having his first surgery in 1966. What could Orr have done with two good knees his whole career it boggles the mind.
On top of his otherworldly talent you never, ever heard a bad word about Bobby Orr. Guy Lafleur roomed with Orr during the Canada Cup series and he commented that Orr could barely walk when they went out for breakfast but when they played the games he was the best player on the ice.
Man, I’m so glad I grew up when Bobby Orr was in his prime. They way he ragged the puck like he did while penalty killing was incredible. He had just about everyone chasing him around while he played keep away
It was easy when he was playing against the crap teams that he played against so often. He benefitted so much from expansion it isn't funny. 12 teams joined in his first 9 years and those teams sucked bad.
@@dannycarlow8204 u can call them all crap teams and plumbers ...that means orr was the greatest of all of em plumbers just like gretzky was the greatest plumber of his era///////////gretzky even played against more shit teams///////////////a league full of donkey shit..................
40 years since he retired and he’d still be the greatest most talented player in the league by far! Imagine how he’d play with today’s trading methods for the players! There is only one Bobby Orr, the Greatest Hockey Player of All Time!
As a St. Louis Blues season ticket holder in the Blues early days, Bobby Orr was not only the greatest defenseman, but the greatest player I ever watched play hands down.. Period! I love watching this video. It brings back a lot of wonderful memories.. good and bad. Thanks for posting this.
My parents got our first tv in 1968. It was a small black and white number. We lived in Massachusetts and boy were my father and I glued to that set every time the Bruins were televised.
I'm a Leafs' fan but still think Orr was the best. He literally changed the face of the game,a true revolutionary. My youngest sister got his autograph for me back in 1990(didn't know he was in these parts;she came upon him by accident).
The saddest thing was that Mr. Orr's career ended at age 30--there simply weren't the advancements in orthopedic surgery for knee injuries there are today--to repair a cartilage injury in those days was major surgery-where as today a player can get back to playing much sooner
That's is the only thing I don't like about him. If he were using his fist I would love him more. That is the only reason I watch hockey. to see hockey players fight. It is boring without a fight.
thats crazy Bobby Orr never shied away from a fight he was on a super tough team and didn't need to throw his weight around but nobody messed with #4. he had a lot of fights.
Jon Saw Check your stats on fights before commenting. If you add the number fights that Gretzky, Lemieux and Gordie Howe had it still would not total the number BOBBY ORR had. The problem is that he was so great at real hockey very few even noticed his fights. Real hockey doesn't have fighting. Go watch boxing or MMA and hopefully a hockey game doesn't break out in the middle.
Lived in Rhode Island during the 1970-71 season and got to watch all the games on local TV! Words would not do justice to his amazing and mesmerizing talent, and ability! Love the goal from his own end into the empty net!
Mr. Orr, Today May 10, 2020 marks 50 years since "The Goal". I grew up in Massachusetts and had a front row seat watching your incredible career. It was very thoughtful of you when the opposition was on the power play to skate around Boston Garden a few times. It gave the fans at home time to go to the kitchen and make a quick sandwich. I also had the pleasure of caddying for you in a pro-am golf tournament after your career ended. Yes, I was awestruck! The years have flown by. I want to thank you for mailing the (30) 8" X 10" photographs of yourself and personalizing each one to a list of friends I gave you. I also appreciated the phone call you made to my home. I'm sorry I missed the call but you spoke to my Mom. It kind of seems fitting it happened that way. Today is Mother's Day. I haven't forgotten the trivia question you asked me that day. Who was on the ice when the Stanley Cup winning goal was scored. I messed it up at the time but you schooled me. Bobby Orr, Don Awrey, Derek Sanderson, Ed Westfall and Wayne Carleton. Thank you for the way you treated me that day. You made me feel comfortable calling you Bobby. I hope the years gone by have been as good to you as you have been to humanity. I hope your golf game is in a good place. Happy 50th
Bobby Orr had a bigger impact with his fans than any athlete I've ever seen. Growing up in Boston. Sons remember sitting down with Dad to watch game. Then after mom was done with dinner dishes, mom would come to family room and If grandma was staying with you. She would come down. My mother who knew nothing about sports watched just about every game. No one, not M.J., Bird, Gretzky ever had that impact
Orr skated in, around and through the opposition like were mere traffic cones. So lucky to have witnessed it. Throw in Russell, Bird and Brady.....what more could a sports fan ask for in life!
All those old shots of the Garden brought back memories. Especially that old scoreboard. I was probably 9 or 10 years old the last time I was there but it comes right back. Also we have an awesome statue of Orr at the new Garden with him flying through the air on that last shot in this video. Man was superhuman.
i was addicted to watching the Bruins as a teenager....WSBK chanel 38 aired almost every game.....Orr was incredible to watch...glad i was able to.....he left many a player behind effortlessly... thx Bobby BEST
WSBK and the Bruins were the best! Watched every game! Incredible personalities back then ... of course Orr being everything including classy and humble, and Turk being his antithesis. And Espo, and Hodge, and Pie, damn the list of great players and personalities goes on and on. One of my favs who seems to get lost these days was the ultra-classy Chief. He and Orr played the game the way it should be played - and I include goal celebrations in there.
Bobby Orr was not only the greatest hockey player in the history of the game, he was the greatest athlete in the history of organized professional sports. No other athlete in any other sport did what he did. He was a true visionary, totally re-defining the sport he played, taking it apart and putting it back together again, re-creating it in his own image. The hockey we see today should be given another name, so fundamentally different it is from the sport as it was before Orr.
"No other athlete in any other sport did what he did." Not true; Babe Ruth did. In 1920, Ruth led the majors with 54 home runs; George Sisler was second with 19. In fact, he hit more HRs than any other TEAM in the AL (and 7 of the 8 teams in the NL).
Bobby Orr would never be able to skate around the Avalanche when they had Patrick Roy and the Detroit Red Wings when they had that incredible bunch Sergei Federov Darren McCarty Brendan Shanahan Igor Larioniv
Stop. The NBA has an active player who has changed the game in his image. Bo Jackson was a legitimate two-sport athlete in two of the four major sports. Tom Brady? Tiger Woods? Michael Jordan? I think Bobby Orr is in the top 3 NHL players ever, at worst. But plenty of other athletes make the final cut as best ever.
The best hockey player I have ever seen, hands down. My Dad took me to see Bobby Orr play in a Stanley Cup Playoff Game in the 1970's. I will never forget it! There will never be another like him. He revolutionized the position of Defense in the NHL. The only Defenseman to ever win an NHL Scoring Title. TWICE! One of the fastest players to ever play the game.
Orr played in a garbage AHL quality league filled with washed up old timers and no name bums. Look up the rosters from back then and try to find a half decent player on those pathetic teams. Two cups during this time is not impressive at all.
His scoring was done against washed up old garbage goaltenders and also against AHL quality / expansion era goaltenders. Nothing to be proud of. The high lite videos of him making toast out of washed up bald headed defensmen seals the deal.
Brainwashed will always be brainwashed. All you need to do is watch a highlite video of Orr and you'll see he's not doing anything amazing. Skating circles around oldtimers on weak teams doesn't make you great. Duncan Kieth blows Orr away!
So.............Just a Bruins hater and a NJ Devils fan. Too bad the Devils suck. Scott Stevens had zero offensive skill. Zero! One dimensional player. He could not even hold Orr's jock strap. The Devils only won their Cups because of the Neutral Zone Trap and the 2 line offsides pass rule back in the day. Their Stanley Cup wins were a joke. The NHL took out the 2 line offsides rule because of the absolute boring (neutral zone trap) hockey played by the Devils. The Devils play the most boring hockey I have ever seen in my entire life. It was ruining the game of hockey. Huge mistake to trade Larrsson for Hall by the way. Rangers are better than the Devils. Heck 30 teams are better than the Devils.
Im Montreal big CH fan i was like ten years old when suddendly i discover this (Grrrrrr !) hockey player from Boston ! GGGrrrrrrrrrr ! Im 59 now ! And i never never seen in my life a pure genius on ice like him ! Modern hockey start with Bobby Orr ! Period ! Respect !
@Tatsujiro Kurogane He would have exceeded Gretzky, in his short time in the NHL he still remains as the greatest all around hockey player. Gretzky was shielded his whole career, Bobby Orr wasn't. He did it all.
I saw all these guys in their prime - Howe, Richard, Belliveau, Orr, Gretz, McDavid and Mathews. They were/are all great hockey players and, most, were classy off the ice. The latter two still have to prove they belong in the same group.
Well well, many opinions here. Even Wayne Gretzky himself said the greatest player ever was Bobby Orr. And they used heavy wooden sticks back then. Not these laser shooters used today. Oh really, ghytgb? Orr was a pussy and couldn't fight? Hahaha! Not sure where you got your information, but that is a "flat out" lie. Bobby Orr could fight and did so, many times. He just wasn't a goon. Bobby Orr was, and is, to this day, the ONLY DEFENSEMAN in History, to ever lead the entire NHL in scoring, and he actually did that twice! And check this out. - Bobby Orr is the only player to ever win a Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe trophy, the Hart trophy, the Art Ross trophy, and the Norris trophy in a single season. He is the only defenseman to have 9 career Hat Tricks. He set single season record for assists (102) and points by a defenseman (139) and plus/minus rating (+124) Gretzky was awesome, no argument here! But, he was not only surrounded by NHL All Stars, he was surrounded by NHL Hall of Famers. And here's some additional info for everyone to ponder. First off, Hockey was traditionally a Canadian and Russian sport. American's played Baseball. Bobby Orr was so good, and so popular, that many American youth wanted to play hockey. And more, and more ice rinks were being built for that purpose. And it is actually documented that some of those youth grew up to become the 1980 US Olympic, "Miracle On Ice" Champions. Those players admitted they got into hockey after watching Bobby Orr. Pretty impressive stuff. That Russian team was so good, they literally beat some NHL teams in exhibition games prior to the start of the 1980 Olympics. And those young college kids, (No Pro's allowed back then.) defeated that amazing powerhouse, USSR team. . .
THE GREATEST HOCKEY PLAYER EVER!!!! I used to get into arguments with my father in law; a native Edmontonian, about who was the greatest hockey player, Of course he brought up Gretzky,. Scoring leader as a defenseman? MVP as a defenseman? But NO ONE chanced the game like Robert Gordon Orr
Never saw a greater NHL player than Bobby. TV channel 38 carried all their games so we all got a chance to see his greatness . What a great time for the B's.
I had the pleasure of seeing Orr and the Bruins play live a few times. I also saw an All-Star game with Orr playing once. The greatest hockey player in history, in my opinion.
@@dantwomey4215 The Brian Conacher story makes Bobby Orr seem like a world-class piece of shit. I guess the truth is somewhere in between - not saintlike, like Béliveau, but not Sean Avery either
Bobby was great but he played against a lot slugs due to expansion..Gretzky played against stiffer competition and better goalies who didn't let goals in on wrist shots from the blue line lmao.... look up team rosters from both era's Orr played against a lot of nobodies
Orr, literally, skated "circles" around other professional hockey players! I don't believe in the word "never!" However, there is always an exception. So, I simply state: You will never see the likes of Bobby Orr ever again!
everyone says "you cant reinvent the wheel"...well he did totally redid the way the game is played, the best skater ever in the nhl....as a diehard ranger fan, i loved to watch bobby orr and was sorry his career was cut short due to his knees...
What they mean is that you may never see a player that much better than the other players. It won’t happen in todays league because everybody is talented. He was ahead of time, best of his era. But, not the most talented Dman ever.
Orr is so fun to watch....like wen there played the habs...ever wen he losts he was still by far the best player on the ice...even on one leg... dryden and robson talk how great hes was.... love how HOF talk about orr..... there know whos best.....bobby orr #1
Simply the greatest all-round player of hockey , no 1 is / will be like Orr, like Pele/ Maradona there is only 1 Orr . A star ! Cheers Bobby ! Thank you for the emotions you gave us ( from a die-hard Hab fan )
I just noticed something about this era in hockey (and sports in general) - the celebrations after goals were a lot more subdued. Nowadays, the athletes celebrate as if they have just done the most remarkable thing in the world. A lot classier in the old days.
Yup. By about the 71-72 season Bobby Orr rarely even raised his hockey stick. It seemed the more he impacted the game, the less attention he wanted to draw to himself. Quite a humble guy. But the greatest foe on ice. IMO, nobody has ever matched the overall all-encompassing talents of Orr. In high school I studied everything about him, read his books, watched him on tape, etc and tried to model his defenseman playing style. Even down to the 2 strips of tape on my stick and no socks (my skates were 3 sizes too small anyway). But it was only a year or two ago I discovered that Orr was also the fastest skater in the league.
its a great point. you can watch the super bowls entire broadcast games from the 70's and 80s on youtube. A guy will tackle the running back for a 2 yd loss and get up and just do a little low 5 with a couple teammates before getting ready for the next play. This day and age is beyond sickening with the "looks at me" attention needing bullshit!!!! It's gotten so fucking old!!!
Orr was the first hockey player to understand that changing speeds and direction was the best way to carry the puck up the ice. This is what made him dominant.
growing up as a kid I had almost every poster and even a double LP record of Orr,he is such a legend. My dad and I would watch every game we could together on ch 38, such great memories
in 1976 Canada Cup the greatest player from Canada and the Soviet players were on ice. Bobby was so far superior to anybody and that was at the tail end of his career. There were great names on those teams, but Bobby was in a league of his own. I'm from Edmonton, and I love Gretzky and Connor McDavid, but Bobby was the greatest.
During the playoffs last season, I was at a bar in the Edmonton area when McDavid broke Gretzky’s record for assists in one playoff, they were showing the list of guys with most assists in one playoff, McDavid had the record, Lemieux had one, I think Coffey had one, the other 3 or 4 all belonged to Gretzky and the guy sitting next to me goes : that’s why he (Gretzky) was the greatest ever, my reply : I say it was Orr, him : yeah, if it wasn’t Gretzky, it was Orr!
Long time Ranger fan here. Orr? Best ever? Absolutely!! This video is proof. No player created space like him. Bad knees limited him in end but truly a joy to watch.
being a hockey player my whole life growing up in minnesota and then working in the golf biz and playing a lot of golf with former NHL greats, every single one of them said Orr is the greatest to ever play the game ,not gretzky. And these guys thought gretzky was incredible but Orr changed the game and could do every aspect of the game is the reason he was the best ever in their opinion. Defense, Offense, Speed, Toughness, he was as good as anyone ever in every key aspect is what they looked at. Gretzky was phenomenal but truly just an offensive player, so Orr was hands down the greatest ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bobby Gans i agree gretzky excellec in two areas passing and shooting. honesty i think mario us equal to him at that. but bobby excelled at everything. he is just better overall.
Jim Wade Orr is very overrated. The Flyers bullies him out of two cups and the Habs lifted 8 cups in his face! Potvin stoped the Habs Dynasty - created an Isles Dynasty - and it took an Oilers Dynasty team to stop Potvins Isles! The word Dynasty never applies to Orr! Potvin stopped the Flyers team that beat up on Orrs Bruins and also easily put the Bruins in their place! Potvin is Top 5 as Orr is not even top 20!
Hey did you ever golf with Curtis Gilles? I was goalie in Bantam Curtis was my Defenseman. The Pas Manitoba. 1970-71 he went on to play for the Northstars as you know.
I'm from Boston, and as a child I used to watch this guy all the time. He inspired me to become a shooting defenseman. But the best thing I ever saw him do, was single-handedly kill a penalty. By himself, he killed the penalty just by skating circles around other players
I agree with all the praises for Bobby Orr and there are times where speech fails to do the jobs and goosebumps and the hair on your neck stands up to take its place. Thank you Bobby for being the best and for in the late 60’s you made me a Bruins fan!!
In 76-77, both Orr’s knees were completely shot and he scored 23 pts in 20 games, a 92 pt pace… and this was barely 2 years before Gretzky entered the league.
There have been many great players in the history of the NHL, but Orr genuinely stands above them all. No other player had such an impact on so many aspects of the game. Not Gretzky, not Lemieux, not Crosby, not Ovechkin, nobody!
Come on man!!! Gretzky has dozens of records that will never be broken. 212 point season, 202 point season. 92 goal season amongst dozens of others. Gretzky holds more records than any player in SPORTS history. Nobody will ever come close to those records. How much of an impact does a man need to make. Orr was great also, but not as great as Gretzky. Not even close.
@@theothersideofthestory1594 If all you can do is cite statistics to support your argument, then all I have to say to you is that you don't know anything about Hockey! There's no way that Gretzky would have wracked up those numbers, had he played in the NHL when Bobby played. It's a know fact that the Oilers & Kings employed goons to protect Gretzky, which essentially allowed him to play unencumbered. Conversely, Bobby's career was cut short by players who deliberately tries to injure him. They went after his knees; and it forced him to get several knee surgery operations. Bobby also fought his own flights... he stood up to anyone who challenged him whereas Gretzky would lose a sparring match with his own shadow.
@@theothersideofthestory1594 If Bobby Orr played a 20 year career with 2 healthy knees like Gretzky, his records would be more unbreakable than Gretzky's... and I'm fully expecting someone to score 93 goals in a season before I see someone be +125.
I turned 40 this year. I never had an appreciation of my own for Bobby Orr. I only ever heard what other people said about Bobby Orr. I just never saw a good footage to understand how good he was. I think this is because most footage is in black-and-white. Seeing this footage in this compilation, I can truly now understand in my own way, that he was amazing at the game.

Right on.

A humble man off of the ice.... There is nothing to not like about Bobby Orr!
He went to Oneil in Oshawa? I had friends who went to Oneil. Didnt know that Bobby went there too!
There will never be another Bobby Orr. He changed the game of hockey.
It was amazing growing up watching Bobby Orr and the Bruins play hockey when I was growing up. Orr was every New England kid's hero. Orr is a great guy.too..humble and easy going, and has done so much for sick kids and others throughout his life.
In my opinion, the best all round, complete player in the history of the NHL. Probably the most unselfish and humble as well.

Agreed..... next to Gretsky of course.
Great player but not even close to "greatest"

Possibly, but all the players were more humble back then. And that makes sense, today players earn generational wealth in a single season. Give a 22 year old instant generational wealth and it's not surprising that it affects their personality.

I'm a Leafs' fan but still think Orr was the best. He literally changed the face of the game,a true revolutionary. My youngest sister got his autograph for me back in 1990(didn't know he was in these parts;she came upon him by accident).
Greatest of all time! An autographed pic of him is one of my prized possessions.
What a gentleman! No fist-pumping, showboating, or any attempt to humiliate his opponents after a goal. He just puts his head down and skates away.

Today May 10, 2020 marks 50 years since "The Goal". Bobby Orr,

"No other athlete in any other sport did what he did."
Not true; Babe Ruth did. In 1920, Ruth led the majors with 54 home runs; George Sisler was second with 19. In fact, he hit more HRs than any other TEAM in the AL (and 7 of the 8 teams in the NL).
Absolutely true.

I think Bobby Orr is in the top 3 NHL players ever, at worst. But plenty of other athletes make the final cut as best ever.
Bobby Orr, the man, the myth, the legend. The greatest hockey player ever.
I wonder if it was that St Louis game where he scored that iconic goal, defeating St Louis and win the cup that year
Orr played in a garbage AHL quality league filled with washed up old timers and no name bums.

No one, and I mean absolutely no one comes close to Bobby Orr as the greatest “complete” hockey player of all time!
He set single season record for assists (102) and points by a defenseman (139) and plus/minus rating (+124)
Gretzky was awesome, no argument here!
And those young college kids, (No Pro's allowed back then.) defeated that amazing powerhouse, USSR team. . .

You have to just laugh at the goaltending though. Like what is even happening.
Howe. #9 Greateat of all time. Looking at the morons running for President. Howe my hero as a kid. RIP #9
And then he endorsed Trump, and I thought, "That's what you get for playing without a helmet."
@Christian Voros I'd like to give you the full picture, but there's only 30 days til the end of the year.
Here's some logic. Bill Barr has disavowed him.
The smoothest operator in the history of the NHL.
when orr was on the ice,its was like there had 4 forwards, and 3 d-man.......he did it all,and some time blocking shots, helping the goaly out too...
Simply the greatest all-round player of hockey , no 1 is / will be like Orr, like Pele/ Maradona there is only 1 Orr . A star ! Cheers Bobby ! Thank you for the emotions you gave us ( from a die-hard Hab fan )
Hell of a nice guy too! God bless you bobby!
you forgot to mention,''a true gentleman as well'' , no hotdogging after all those brilliant plays and goals..
Because the plays were against loser bums that were AHL quality you dope.
@@toddmurphy2589 you're an idiot
I just noticed something about this era in hockey (and sports in general) - the celebrations after goals were a lot more subdued. Nowadays, the athletes celebrate as if they have just done the most remarkable thing in the world. A lot classier in the old days.
Because scoring today is a lot harder then it was back then.
Showboating is a narcissistic millennial thing. Most of the kids today in hockey, however amazing they are, are just cucks with fragile egos.
its a great point. you can watch the super bowls entire broadcast games from the 70's and 80s on youtube. A guy will tackle the running back for a 2 yd loss and get up and just do a little low 5 with a couple teammates before getting ready for the next play. This day and age is beyond sickening with the "looks at me" attention needing bullshit!!!! It's gotten so fucking old!!!
Orr was a showboat. It's how they got Americans into hockey.
I'm grateful I grew up watching Bobby Orr. Those of you who didn't watch these games missed out on something really special.
in 1976 Canada Cup the greatest player from Canada and the Soviet players were on ice.
I love watching him play. Truly the greatest 👍
Happy 70th to the GOAT, Bobby Orr
Fuck him
GOAT?!
That'd be Gretzky
Bobby is the best defenseman in the history of the league but he's nothing compared to Gretzky "The Great One"
I am a 63 year old Hawk fan and I have to admit that Orr was the best.
@@dumisatonyjohnson8145 Nothing compared to Gretzky? At worst he's the 2nd best player in history.
@@dumisatonyjohnson8145 Lemiex and Orr were better
Long time Ranger fan here. Orr? Best ever? Absolutely!! This video is proof. No player created space like him. Bad knees limited him in end but truly a joy to watch.
The Legend.Thanks from Russia.
being a hockey player my whole life growing up in minnesota and then working in the golf biz and playing a lot of golf with former NHL greats, every single one of them said Orr is the greatest to ever play the game ,not gretzky.
Bobby Gans
i agree gretzky excellec in two areas passing and shooting. honesty i think mario us equal to him at that. but bobby excelled at everything. he is just better overall.
Nice to hear...love orr
Yes, Gretsky was the best ever scorer but only one dimensional. Orr was the epitome of a two-way player.
Amazing footage of the greatest hockey player in the history of hockey!
No way so many others were way better!!!!!! Mario Lemieux!!!!!!! Wayne Gretzky!!!!!!!! Sergei Federov!!!!!!!!!!!! Mike Midano!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@FOXLIES I question ur support of Joe Biden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@FOXLIES shows how smart he is. He knows a great American when he sees one.
Saw Orr at Maple Leaf Gardens...on his first goal boos from the Toronto crowd; on his second goal silence; on completing the hat trick a standing O...
ONE THING I ALWAYS REGRETTED WAS I COULDNT SKATE LIKE BOBBY ORR!!
(QUOTE) WAYNE GRETZKY!!!!!
Yeeeeeeees baby. Best EVER!! So glad I lived then to witness it.
say what you want about Gretzky Bobby changed the way the game was/is still played. he is THE GREATEST!
Gretzky would have turned Orr inside out
In 76-77, both Orr’s knees were completely shot and he scored 23 pts in 20 games, a 92 pt pace… and this was barely 2 years before Gretzky entered the league.
I discovered Bobby Orr as a kid. I'd NEVER seen a hockey game. I WAS HOOKED! FOREVER A BRUINS FAN! THOSE WERE THE DAYS!
So happy that I got to see his whole career. Bobby Orr was a man amongst kids, and never rubbed it in. He made every player on his team better.
Amazing talent the likes of we will never see again
This is why josi deserves norris.cant be debated..better than all the rest.
@@theothersideofthestory1594
If all you can do is cite statistics to support your argument, then all I have to say to you is that you don't know anything about Hockey!
I was a young boy when I saw Orr play. His greatness was obvious to me even as a child. The G.O.A.T.
Truly, one of the nicest and humble men you will ever meet,I was lucky enough to do do and will never forget it.
