Hi, what higher surgical specialty do you want to pursue? Are you planning to practice in the UK as a surgical consultant? Normally doctors in UK after FY2/internship, do core surgical training CST (2 years). During this time they take the MRCS. After that, they apply for higher surgical specialty training in a paticular surgical field eg plastics, urology, vascular, ent, general surgery etc. During the higher surgical specialty training doctors take the FRCS. After that, you become a surgical consultant. To apply for higher surgical specialty training, you will need MRCS and complete core surgical training (or equivalent).

@@hirenpatoliya99 Hi, yes it will count. There are a number of route options. You could do the MRCS and register with the GMC. After that, apply for trust grade surgical jobs here. After working here for 6 months in surgery, apply for higher surgical specialty training in urology (5 years). I would suggest to do a trust grade post before applying for higher surgical training, so that you can get used to the system here and gain UK experience as well as prepare for the application and interview.

Hi, thank you. Surgery is not my field but I will share what i know. Most doctors here after internship FY2, do core surgical training (2 years). During this time they take the MRCS. After that, they apply for higher specialty training in a particular field ie vascular, general surgery, plastics, urology etc. (5 years). During this they take the FRCS. After that you are a consultant. FRCS is an exam (it is open to all doctors). Higher specialty training is competitive but possible for IMGs if you are commited and have a good cv. if you manage to enter higher specialty training, you have an equal opportunity to gain hands on experience and theatre time as local trainees. I can't really coment on how beneficial doing an MCH will be as surgery is not my field. But i guess it will improve your cv.

FRCS is the exam. Doctors normally do FRCS while doing higher surgical specialty training (5 years). All specilaty training in UK is free. You will receive a monthly salary enough to support your living here.

Hi, MRCS is normally done during core surgical training (CST) (2 years). After CST and MRCS, most doctors apply for higher surgical training - eg general surgery, ENT, vascular, plastics, urology (6-7 years). During higher surgical training, doctors take the FRCS. After that, you will become a surgical consultant. This is the route in the UK to become a surgical consultant. I am not sure about the pathway overseas.
Hello, kindly suggest something about opthalmology. I passed a 2 year post graduate diploma in opthalmology (DOMS) from India last year and now working as an opthalmologist in a private hospital. Still working on my surgical skills. Hi, thank you. Yes, opthalmology is competitive but possible if you have a good cv/portfolio and do well in the interview. After PLAB, apply for a non-training trust grade post here in UK (FY2/SHO) (6-12 months). You can use this time to prepare your application and gain NHS experience. After that, apply for opthalmology specialty training (7 years).

Hi, most doctors who are awarded the FRCP are already a consultant/specialist. It is more like an accolade given to distinguished consultants or specialty doctors. No most new consultants do not have FRCP. I don't think there is much difference in the colleges.

I am not sure about the MSc courses. UK doctors don't normally do PG degree/masters/MD to specialise and become a consultant. We do the specialty training programme to specialise.

PLAB will be suitable for newly qualified doctors. The UK specialty exams will be suitable for more senior doctors.

Specialty training (residency) is free in UK. MRCP is only needed for the medical specialties. Other specialties like surgery, paediatrics etc do not require MRCP.

I think you shud check the FRCS website for this one.. you ll find their eligibility criteria. Most probably you won't be able to directly take the exit exam. You ll have to pursue your fellowship course in uk

Hi, I am not very familiar with the MCh programme. Most doctors (UK and IMGs), do not do specialisation via a university. We do athe specialty training programme conducted via health education England. It is not a masters or MD. But that is what UK doctors do to specialise and become a consultant. So, I can't really advise on the MCh route as I do not have any experience on it. If you want to work and settle in UK, it is best to do what uk doctors do. Usual pathway for IMGs : After MRCS, apply for GMC registration (apply on the GMC website). After GMC registration, apply for non-training jobs here in UK (for 6-12 months), to gain NHS experience. After that, apply for higher specialty training in urology (4 years).

She is saying of giving MRCOG exam. Q1 can she register in GMC after clearing MRCOG part 1 exam and start training in UK. Q2 does she has to complete her MRCOG part 3 and then come to UK to practice. Hi, you have to meet the GMC English requirements in order to register and work here. Yes, you will need MRCP to apply to any of the medical specialties. It is best to start as a trust grade/clinical fellow job before applying for specialty training in rheumatology.

Hi, then you might be only eligible to apply for provisional GMC licence. You might need to complete a foundation programme or equivalen in the UK in oder to get full licence. However, in situations like this I highly suggest that you contact the GMC directly to clarify. It might still be counted.

Hi, in the UK, specialty training is conducted by health education england. It is not run by a university/college. After FY2, you can apply for core surgical training. The application is centralised. You will be able to rank your choices of where you want to work on the application.

Hi, you have to decide on which medical specialty you want to pursue. Then, apply to the respected specialty. In the UK, you can apply to as many specialties as you wish. Most people apply to 1-3 specialties. But do remember that your CV and portfolio needs to be targeted to the specialty you are applying to.

Pathway to be a medical consultant in the UK-After MBBS and internship, apply for internal medicine training (IMT) (2-3 years). During IMT, take MRCP. After IMT and MRCP, apply for higher specialty training in your desired medical specialty eg cardiology, respiratory, acute medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, renal medicine, haematology etc. (4-5 years). You can apply for higher specialty training in acute medicine or general medicine if none of the other specialties appeal to you. You can skip internal medicine training (IMT), if you have done something similar and can demonstrate that you have gained all the competencies and experience of an IMT doctor.
@@mariammaphilipose702 It will be MBBS, MRCP. Once you have done higher specialty training eg cardiology and have obtained a cct (Certificate of Completion of Training), it will be MBBS, MRCP (cardiology). In the UK, you do not normally have MD as a title.

Hi, as far as I am aware, you need MRCP in order to apply to higher specialty training in medicine (eg gastro, cardio, resp). You should be able to find the eligibility requirements from the specialty recruitment website here. www.st3recruitment.org.uk. You can start applying prior to obtaining full MRCP, but you must complete the MRCP by the time of appoinment. Apart from MRCP you must have achived the core competensies required to enter ST3 specialty training.

Hi, I am not sure about the Bahrain RCSI route. It is best to check directly with the medical college for transfer opportunities. PLAB will be replaced by the UKMLA in 2023, so it is best to check once the change has been implemented.

Hi, since the competition is too fierce for applying to specialty training post betwwen the UK med student , the specialty post that are left are either GP or psychiatry ,so while going to interviews for applying to specialty training post what do wa have to add to our documents so we can be chosen instead of the other applicant?
@@hadigaming5078 Hi, IMGs do get into competitive specialties. As long as you have a good CV/portfolio and do well in the interview you will get in. Try and do audits/quality improvement projects/papers/posters/courses/presentations related to the specialty you want to pursue. This will show your commitment to the specialty.

Hi, you can sit for the MRCS when you are ready. MRCS is in an exam so you can sit for it at anytime. Most doctors sit for it during core surgical training (2 years). You can apply for core surgical training after FY2. There are no other eligibility criteria. You will need both - MRCS and completion of core surgical training to apply for higher surgical specialty training (5 years).

Hi, what higher surgical specialty do you want to pursue? Are you planning to practice in the UK as a surgical consultant? Normally doctors in UK after FY2/internship, do core surgical training CST (2 years). During this time they take the MRCS. After that, they apply for higher surgical specialty training in a paticular surgical field eg plastics, urology, vascular, ent, general surgery etc. During the higher surgical specialty training doctors take the FRCS. After that, you become a surgical consultant. To apply for higher surgical specialty training, you will need MRCS and complete core surgical training (or equivalent).

@@hirenpatoliya99 Hi, yes it will count. There are a number of route options. You could do the MRCS and register with the GMC. After that, apply for trust grade surgical jobs here. After working here for 6 months in surgery, apply for higher surgical specialty training in urology (5 years).
I would suggest to do a trust grade post before applying for higher surgical training, so that you can get used to the system here and gain UK experience as well as prepare for the application and interview.

Hi, thank you. Surgery is not my field but I will share what i know. Most doctors here after internship FY2, do core surgical training (2 years). During this time they take the MRCS. After that, they apply for higher specialty training in a particular field ie vascular, general surgery, plastics, urology etc. (5 years). During this they take the FRCS. After that you are a consultant. FRCS is an exam (it is open to all doctors). Higher specialty training is competitive but possible for IMGs if you are commited and have a good cv. if you manage to enter higher specialty training, you have an equal opportunity to gain hands on experience and theatre time as local trainees.
I can't really coment on how beneficial doing an MCH will be as surgery is not my field. But i guess it will improve your cv.

FRCS is the exam. Doctors normally do FRCS while doing higher surgical specialty training (5 years). All specilaty training in UK is free. You will receive a monthly salary enough to support your living here.

Hi, MRCS is normally done during core surgical training (CST) (2 years). After CST and MRCS, most doctors apply for higher surgical training - eg general surgery, ENT, vascular, plastics, urology (6-7 years). During higher surgical training, doctors take the FRCS. After that, you will become a surgical consultant. This is the route in the UK to become a surgical consultant. I am not sure about the pathway overseas.

Hi, thank you. Yes, opthalmology is competitive but possible if you have a good cv/portfolio and do well in the interview. After PLAB, apply for a non-training trust grade post here in UK (FY2/SHO) (6-12 months). You can use this time to prepare your application and gain NHS experience. After that, apply for opthalmology specialty training (7 years).

It depends on how much clinical experience you have. if you have graduated outside the UK/EU you need to take the PLAB or one of the UK specialty exam like MRCP/MRCS/MRCOG/MRCPCH etc to obtain GMC registration. PLAB will be suitable for newly qualified doctors. The UK specialty exams will be suitable for more senior doctors.

Hi, I am not very familiar with the MCh programme. Most doctors (UK and IMGs), do not do specialisation via a university. We do athe specialty training programme conducted via health education England. It is not a masters or MD. But that is what UK doctors do to specialise and become a consultant. So, I can't really advise on the MCh route as I do not have any experience on it.
If you want to work and settle in UK, it is best to do what uk doctors do. Usual pathway for IMGs : After MRCS, apply for GMC registration (apply on the GMC website). After GMC registration, apply for non-training jobs here in UK (for 6-12 months), to gain NHS experience. After that, apply for higher specialty training in urology (4 years).

No it should be ok as long as you do an internship after medical school. It does not have to be in your home country.

Hi, then you might be only eligible to apply for provisional GMC licence. You might need to complete a foundation programme or equivalen in the UK in oder to get full licence. However, in situations like this I highly suggest that you contact the GMC directly to clarify. It might still be counted.

Hi, in the UK, specialty training is conducted by health education england. It is not run by a university/college. After FY2, you can apply for core surgical training. The application is centralised. You will be able to rank your choices of where you want to work on the application.

Both routes, still require MRCS to be done in the second year of training and FRCS (cardiothoracic) before completion.

Hi, you have to decide on which medical specialty you want to pursue. Then, apply to the respected specialty. In the UK, you can apply to as many specialties as you wish. Most people apply to 1-3 specialties. But do remember that your CV and portfolio needs to be targeted to the specialty you are applying to.

@@randomviralfeed Hi, you do not need MRCP to specialise in plastics or any of the surgical specialties. PLAB will be enough. After PLAB, apply for core surgical training (2 years). In that 2 years you need to complete the MRCS. Then apply for higher surgical specialty training (plastics, ENT, T&O, cardiothoracics etc). The higher surgical specialty training is normally for 5-6 years. During the 5-6 years, you need to complete the FRCS in the respected specialty.

@@ajthapa47 Yes, i think you can take the MRCP to obtain GMC registation. However, to work in UK as a consultant, you will need to do specialty training in the UK. Pathway to be a medical consultant in the UK-After MBBS and internship, apply for internal medicine training (IMT) (2-3 years). During IMT, take MRCP. After IMT and MRCP, apply for higher specialty training in your desired medical specialty eg cardiology, respiratory, acute medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, renal medicine, haematology etc. (4-5 years). You can apply for higher specialty training in acute medicine or general medicine if none of the other specialties appeal to you. You can skip internal medicine training (IMT), if you have done something similar and can demonstrate that you have gained all the competencies and experience of an IMT doctor.

Hi, MRCP is the clear pathway for doctors. It is easily achievable. Most doctors who have an FRCP, also have an MRCP.
@@mariammaphilipose702 It will be MBBS, MRCP. Once you have done higher specialty training eg cardiology and have obtained a cct (Certificate of Completion of Training), it will be MBBS, MRCP (cardiology). In the UK, you do not normally have MD as a title.

Hi, as far as I am aware, you need MRCP in order to apply to higher specialty training in medicine (eg gastro, cardio, resp). You should be able to find the eligibility requirements from the specialty recruitment website here. www.st3recruitment.org.uk.
You can start applying prior to obtaining full MRCP, but you must complete the MRCP by the time of appoinment.
Apart from MRCP you must have achived the core competensies required to enter ST3 specialty training.

Hi, I am not sure about the Bahrain RCSI route. It is best to check directly with the medical college for transfer opportunities. PLAB will be replaced by the UKMLA in 2023, so it is best to check once the change has been implemented.

@@hadigaming5078 Hi, IMGs do get into competitive specialties. As long as you have a good CV/portfolio and do well in the interview you will get in. Try and do audits/quality improvement projects/papers/posters/courses/presentations related to the specialty you want to pursue. This will show your commitment to the specialty.

Hi, you can sit for the MRCS when you are ready. MRCS is in an exam so you can sit for it at anytime. Most doctors sit for it during core surgical training (2 years). You will need both - MRCS and completion of core surgical training to apply for higher surgical specialty training (5 years).

Hi, you can apply for the exam on the MRCP website www.mrcpuk.org. The results will normally be released 4 weeks after the exam.

MRCP is not a degree. UK doctors don't normally do MD/masters/degree to specialise. We do the specialty training programme. What specialty do you want to do?
