- What is a Redemptive-Historical Hermeneutic?
This video looks at the underlying methodology used to read and interpret the Scriptures in the previous videos. In doing so, I hope to introduce and summarize some basic principles of interpretation that I have found helpful in guiding the reader to be consistent with the Bible’s presentation and interpretation of itself.
I hope to introduce people to the concept of a redemptive-historical hermeneutic, which, in my experience, is a topic that is somewhat difficult to find easily accessible, focused treatment on. I hope to distill some of the principles I have learned from books that I have read (particularly, summarizing the principles from Richard Gaffin's chapter on "The Redemptive-Historical View" in the book, Biblical Hermeneutics: Five Views) to people who may not be inclined to pick these books up to read. I also hope to introduce people to these authors and teachers themselves, as they have had a great impact on my own life and faith through their writing.
If interested, here are the sources used in putting together the video:
-“The Redemptive-Historical View” by Richard B. Gaffin Jr. (chapter in the book: Biblical Hermeneutics - Five Views) ***This is the main source that I pulled these principles from. Though just one chapter of a book, this is one of the most clear and concise treatments of the topic that I have found. Most of the content in this video is essentially just summarizing the main points in that chapter.
-“The Idea of Biblical Theology as a Science and as a Theological Discipline” by Geerhardus Vos (chapter in the book: Redemptive History and Biblical Interpretation by Geerhardus Vos and edited by Richard B. Gaffin Jr.)
-Biblical Theology by Geerhardus Vos
-A New Testament Biblical Theology by GK Beale (quoted in the video)
-“The Redemptive-Historical Hermeneutic and Preaching” by William D. Dennison (essay online)
-Various podcasts and content from Reformed Forum that has exposed me to and showed me some of these ideas in action, along the way
