  • Crossfit as a training modality vs a training system, just as BJJ went from being MMA to only a part of it

Thinking in terms of a gym owner, would you have a large facility that ran CrossFit, StrongFit, Hyrox and Powerlifting with their own respective coaches/experts in that field to run the program and have them run as separate programs or would you have one program that incorporated all of the above?

So relating to movement box, is there a parallel between the “4 workouts” to the 4 energy systems? It’s also interesting to observe what kind of people will gravitate towards which, similar to how certain people gravitate towards certain corners of the performance box.

      @@thornleychan yes, definitely the parallel

Sorry, I can't focus on anything you're saying because that CAT is so fluffy and has its own little chair and it's so distractingly cute :)

Very weak and biased critique. You go 40 min. about crossfit not being a methodology but instead it being a modality and you never even gave a DEFINITION for methodology.
You are one more in a loooong list of ppl who critique the miss-aplication of a concept instead of the concept per sé. Everything you said here can be debunked by a line or paragraph in the CrossFit L1 and L2 guides. It's a lot to unpack but here it is:
1.- Most definitions go something like: "A method is a structured procedure for bringing about a certain goal... normally involving various steps, like choosing a sample, collecting data from this sample, and interpreting the data."
I think it can be simply defined as: A structure or system, based on a set of rules or principles, to produce a specific outcome".
CrossFit follows a well defined structure, it's based on the main principles of physiology (like Selye's stress-adaptation syndrome) and exercise physiology (like SRA, specificity, progressions, energy systems, etc) and it aims to produce a SPECIFIC result, which is fitness.
So, given an objective definition of methodology, CrossFit meets the criteria.
2.- I've just mentioned that the specific goal of CrossFit is to produce Fitness. You also mention at one point "if you wanna get fit, do rowing intervals, do sprints... 30 min workouts with 10 movements won't get you fit".
Again we are met with a false conundrum because of the lack of definitions.
CrossFit defines fitness as: Work capacity across broad time and modal domains. It is an objective definition, meaning it can be measured mathematically. That measurement would be: how much average power (foot pounds per min., H.p., watts, etc) can a person produce at various modalities and time domains.
So, until you give a clear definition of what you mean by concepts like fitness or strength, this one goes again to CrossFit, as it is proven to be the best method at developing fitness.
Then, based on your statement of "30 min. workouts with 10 dif mov.." I can attest with what I mentioned at the intro, of you critiquing a miss-aplication of CF as if that was CF. Go and read the chapter on the L1 guide about variance and programming and you'll see that by CrossFit standards, programing those type of sessions is NOT CrossFit.
3.- You then take the conversation to explaining your point of CF as a training modality by proposing that, based on the length of the effort, you have: Power lifting / strongman in continued in next comment

Anyone who has trained Crossfit for a prolonged period, seen improvements and become "fit" by any Crossfit related measurement, who has then attempted to run a 5k, knows exactly what Julien is saying.
You can't claim to be the end to end standard of functional fitness if a widely accepted measurement of functional fitness, being able to run fairly fast for a fair distance, is beyond your trainees that you consider "fit".
