  • Sometimes, great moments happens to us when we don’t plan. We were bored while driving and decided to just go where ever the road leads us. And the road ends at Pak Tam Chung (Sai Kung Park Visitor Centre), where we stumbled upon a strange name called “Toad Rock” and we decided to give it a hike.
Kam Kui Shek Teng (also known as Yuk Yan Shan) is located at northern side of High Island Reservoir. The rock resembles a toad standing on top of the Kam Kui Shek Teng at 178m high. “Kam Kui” literally means “toad” in Chinese. The view from this rock is spectacular from all sides and I would not hesitate to call this rock the best location in Hong Kong to take jaw dropping pics.
The hike to the rock is around 7 km and took us around 3.5 hours hike to complete the trail. The trail is not easy especially after turning onto the smaller off the Maclehose trail. As we began our hike to the rock, it became evident that the trail had succumbed to the encroaching wilderness. We had to push through the dense foliage as we forged our way ahead.
When we climbed up the rock, the panoramic views is unrivalled. There was a moment of pure serenity in the absence of other visitors. We had the rock all to ourselves, free to immerse ourselves in the tranquil ambiance and capture the essence of the place through our lenses.
Time slipped away unnoticed, it was only when the sun began its descent then we left the rocks quickly. The return journey was a bit tricky, we have to backtrack and correct our course on multiple occasions. It’s a great relief to find the familiar path that led us back to the clear track, before dark.
The effort invested in reaching the rock was undeniably worthwhile!

It took us 3.5 hours round trip. Its not too hard but good to have the hiking trail app just in case you could not find the trail. Its not very easy to follow
