I also put duct tape on my hiking poles and have used it many times for minor repairs. I also put reflective tape on my hiking poles so I can see them with my headlamp if I drop them and be seen by cars if roadside hiking
I always recommend an extra day of any prescription medication(s) as well.
Good idea!
What about signaling devices ? Whistle, mirror, flag. Great repair kit ideas. You inspire me ❤
Absolutely! Whistles, mirrors and flags are all great ideas. A lot of people don't realize that there's a built-in whistle located on the sternum strap on most packs, which means one less piece of gear to carry and it's easily accessible in an emergency.
The SPF clothes are KEY! I am allergic to many sunscreens, and the long-sleeved, hooded sunscreen shirts make it so much easier.
And one thing I always have is a bandana.
Last year, I fell in love with my sun hoodie. Now I can't hike in direct sunlight without it. No more farmer tan or crazy sunburns on my arms and heck yes to having to wear less sunscreen.
As far as the first aid kit I would consider 1-2 triangle bandages, they are super light and can be used for a ton of things including as a tourniquet if need be
Great suggestion!
Thanks for mentioning snow blindness - don’t forget the 🕶
You're welcome! Snow blindness sucks!!! Also sunglasses, always!
Good video. I like to carry a multi-tool. The pliers have been very useful, from removing large cactus thorns from a buddy's leg to extracting tent pegs from hard soil. Also, I believe the superglue could be used to close a wound, if needed, and it might keep it cleaner than a bandage. I suggest, though, occasionally checking any meds to make sure they have not expired in your first aid kit.
Thank you! Yes, superglue has MANY different uses out in the backcountry. This is a big reason why I always have some with me in my Gear Repair Kit for any trip I go on. Good tip on checking the expiration dates on medications. That is something I do every year. Whenever I add new medications to my First Aid Kit, I always note the expiration date, making it easy for me to know when I need to replace them.
Great video! Years ago my girlfriend had an old compact mirror she didn’t use any more. I packed it into my first aid kit. It folds to protect the mirror and it’s plastic and very light. I think it’s Clinique. I also pack 6 q-tips. I don’t know how many bugs and stuff I have dug out of my eyes. It’s essential for me. Plus all the memories it brings back! 😉 Best!
Great idea!
I really enjoyed this video. I love how you presented the essentials without all the bluff and bluster. Good vibes. Happy trials to you!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I find an altimeter helpful to have too.
Ground insulation such as a inflatable or foam pad. If you go down with injury, sickness or get stranded you will be on the ground long enough to need this. Also, be sure to have extra contact lenses and solution or emergency glasses.

Great list and I think some very usefull essentials for beginners.
The 10 Essentials are useful for both beginners as well as well-seasoned hikers and backpackers. They never go out of style!
@@TheHungryHiker you're absolutely right. But experienced hikers will have it more often already in their pack I think (or hope 😉)
@@theoutdoordogandhikinggirl You would hope so, but I've run into quite a few well seasoned hikers and backpackers who didn't know what the 10 Essentials were. Most backpackers, due to the nature of their trip out in the backcountry, will probably have most of the 10 Essentials with them. ThIs a good reminder for everyone.
another great vid !thanks i learn sooooooo much watching your vids!
Awesome, thank you!
This is a really well presented video! I'm new to backpacking and I have found your videos to be very well thought out and informative. It was easy to follow and I've saved it to reference back to as I gather my gear. My future, safer self thanks you!!
Thank you! This video was a lot of fun to make. Super important information in this one, Glad you've been finding my videos helpful.
This was really helpful, thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much
Missed ya. This is probably my bazillionth review of the 10 essentials but it feels like sitting down with a hot cocoa - comfort food. :) Thanks for sharing your version.
Thanks for watching! PS: YES to the hot cocoa :)
Hello 👋 my outdoors friend, greetings from Northern California. Sincere thanks for sharing this informative video. You did a great job in presenting the information. All the best to you. Stay safe out there. 🤗
Hello and thank you for watching!
Love your videos
Thank you! I love making them!
Great content. It is really motivating for me to keep uploading videos on my channel. Keep up the great work, I'm looking forward to the next one
Happy to help motivate! I haven’t been super active or consistent with my own video uploading schedule over the last few months, but there will be new content coming…soonish! I have quite the summer planned with LOTS of adventures scheduled. 😀
Great video. SAR would be able to have much more family time if everyone followed this simple systems. Get out and enjoy the out of doors safely and enjoy.
Thanks for watching!
Woot! You're back!
Missed your videos...
I've been VERY busy this winter. Finally getting back into making videos again. I've missed the whole video creation and editing process. More to come this summer!
@@TheHungryHiker I am looking forward to the big hike you are not yet telling us about, on Insta... trying to guess where it will be.
@@cassidysummer509 Details coming soon!! :)
Thank you for sharing how you carry your duck tape. I was worried about taking the whole roll as it is so heavy!
Glad it was helpful!
Hey, quick question if I may...
Im a big fan of custom building first-aid kits tailored to anticipated individual needs. It always seems like a much better option than pre-made kits that have loads of unwanted bloatware.
The little red first-aid pouch seens the perfect size for a light kit. I love the fact that it also appears semi transparent.
Could you tell us where you sourced that? There are loads of empty pouchs around to build your own IFAK but that one looks perfect.
I just finished picking up the last few things I needed! I feel so much better having everything even though I hope I don’t need to use these things. We’re about to set out on a 2 week hiking heavy trip to Yellowstone with our 3 kids. They’re learning about the 10 essentials too. Thanks for the ideas - I almost forgot hats for the kids!
Duct tape wrapped on poles. Ingenious
Having duct tape on my poles has saved me in quite a few situations. It's nice to have it handy and I can see how much I have left so I know when I need to replenish my supply.
❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Been awhile!!! Headed out to the WT again this year and your videos are always great refreshers just as they have been in the past!
Just backpacked Paria Canyon. If you haven’t done it yet I highly recommend it!!
Thank you!
@@TheHungryHiker no, THANK YOU!
Any big trips planned? Looking for more ideas now that more people are flocking outdoors and parks are limiting the usage for backpackers.
That’s heavy!
I don't bring each of these items with me on all of my trips. I'm showing variations of the different 10 Essentials that you could bring with you for hiking and backpacking. The heaviest system is my first aid kit and if an emergency were to go down on trail, I'd be okay with having the weight if it meant being able to survive out on trail and get myself (or someone else out on trail) out of a pickle.
Thanks for the video. Very informative. As a prospective new hiker, I was attracted to your course so I can find all the info I need in one place. Unfortunately, since you marketed your course just to women, I'll look elsewhere. I have to think that 85% of the content would apply to everyone. Just my 2 cents...
This program isn’t just about content and information, it’s about the transformation. It’s about creating a safe space for women to learn, build up their confidence and get tough questions answered in a normally very male dominated space. There are lots of great resources geared out there towards a male audience. I have no doubt you’ll find what you’re looking for. Good luck! 😀
Careful ! That small BIC lighter is too fragile and unreliable (I speak from experience). Take a full size BIC lighter instead.
I've had mine for a few years and it's still going strong!

Yes, this can be a helpful piece of gear, as long as you know how to use it.
Great video, thanks for sharing with us.
