    REV AT THE BOTTOM? COWARDS, THE LOT OF YOU

    • @lagspike7763
      @lagspike7763 2 года назад +36

      Ok now that I’ve calmed down I can explain why I think rev actually straight up can’t be at the bottom.
      First of all: Fates. Fates is a ridiculously mechanically complex game with all kinds of nuances and unique strategies that no other game in the series comes close to.
      The issue with Birthright is that the game is so easy even on lunatic that you’re never encouraged to interface with those deep mechanics. Conquest on the other hand forces you to interact with the mechanics. Rev is a bit more chill about it. Instead of sending poison strike ninjas at you, rev just sends a couple of strong promoted enemies at you. It also lets you go full sandbox mode with all sorts of insanely fun custom builds (CQ has customizations too but you’d be surprised how much of it becomes either impossible or super tough when you remove all the cool BR weapons like dual weapons and whatnot). At the end of the day, Rev is just Fates with some gimmicky map design, and honestly, fates is built so well that I find it frankly baffling that people rag on it as much as they do.
      There’s some definitely horrible maps in Rev, don’t get me wrong. The elevator map is awful, the map right before endgame sucks, and the stealth chapter is dogshit. However, that’s more than par for the course for fates. Conquest lategame (especially on lunatic) is also borderline unplayable without very specific strategies and plans; it’s just that the gimmicks of the maps are a lot more difficult to spot at a cursory glance and basically don’t exist on lower difficulties (there’s barely any rallies on ch 23 CQ on normal for example). It’s just that it’s better than people give it credit for.

      the worst part about it being at the bottom is that throughout the entire section of the video talking about it, the gameplay wasnt mentioned even once, it was just about why the story is bad

      I mean, the skip button solves all of the Rev problems anyways. Most people don't even experience the story on repeat playthroughs; they are just there for the gameplay. So all the points about the story for all of these games are pretty irrelevant imo.

    I think that glossing over what made Warriors disliked by a lot of people does it a disservice. It and the next game in the countdown had the exact same problem that stopped people from even giving it a chance.
    The goddawfull roster. Warriors came out in the peak of Fateswakening wanking and basically told us "yeah this is all you're getting. And a tiny amount of SD."
    That basically made lots of older fans just skip it on principle. I did until it was on a huge discount. And once you pick it up... it's fine. It clearly doesn't have the love that HW had put into it, and there's way too many clones, but if I started the series at Awakening I probably would have liked it.
    As it stands, it feels like wasted potential.

    • @aduboo29
      @aduboo29 2 года назад +2

      I did start the franchise with Awakening and frankly replaying the story beats of Awakening is probably my least favourite part of Warriors. It just felt lazy to me. I've played Awakening like five times, I didn't need to see the cliffnotes version in Warriors.
      And that's not because I've fallen out of love with Awakening or anything - still love the game, despite having played every other game in the franchise (save Gaiden) at this point, and being fully aware of its warts. It just, like you said, clearly didn't have the same love and effort put in as Hyrule Warriors did.

    F to all FE3 and FE6 fans oof this one hurt a lot :')
    At least it's somewhat predictable since it's based on multiple opinions and many people aren't too fond of FE6 let alone FE3, but oh well, what can we do about the JP games. If it weren't for Judgral's writing I doubt those would get as much attention as they get, and FE12 is you either play it or you don't, so honestly it's not even surprising seeing them at the bottom of the list. FE3/6 are the ones that need a proper remake the most (not counting Judgral lol, but even then they still somewhat hold up by today's standarts), specially FE3 (due to Project Ember being a thing). Just imagine, with recent FE visuals, both Books, a good translation and a hard mode to increase the difficulty. That way you can please newer fans, older FE3 fans, somewhat FE12 fans with the difficulty if you let them play Book 2 before Book 1 (basically choose whichever) and now the Marth Archanea games can have a proper game. But that's just fantasizing sadly...
    On the other hand, returning to this "many people's opinions" topic I wouldn't be surprised to see the next video starting with Sacred Stones since so many people tend to place it in the middle, but I hope I'm wrong since it's such an underrated game :(
    Great video anyways Bopper! :)

    FE3 placing so low is a travesty. It's a really great game that often executes its story and gameplay ideas better than the remakes do. It's unfortunate that it shares FE1, 2 and 12's problem of the fan translation being hot garbage as the story is actually quite well-written in Japanese (in book 2 particularly) and I doubt it will ever get a proper western localization.

The biggest things I would change if I could would be changing weapon/staff rank, changing the hit rates on pretty much every weapon, and updating how supports work. These flaws do add to the charm though and emulators at least make support spamming much more tolerable which helps with the accuracy issues.

    Shadow Dragon is a weird game for me. From an intellectual standpoint, I can understand how people could really like the game. The class-changing system is pretty interesting, the map design is challenging, and broken stuff like the warp staff and forging effective weaponry can be fun to play around with.
    But for me, the game just feels really bland. And even more than that, there's this feeling of disrespect towards FE1 in the game that I really just can't get over, and this bothered me even on my original playthrough of SD, which was before I had even played FE1. Like, it doesn't feel like the people making SD were looking at FE1 and trying to improve it -- rather, most of the mechanics added to that game are things from later games that they thought people would expect to be there (like the Weapon Triangle, or the rebalancing of character stats to have higher stat caps), or things that just turn it into a completely different game (like the class changing system). And it feels thoughtlessly thrown in there. I don't like the weapon triangle in SD for example, because many of the maps feature practically all enemies of one weapon type or another, because that's how FE1 was because the WT didn't exist. The result is I felt less like I was playing a remake of FE1, and more like I was playing a lazily slapped together new title.
    SoV, as a contrast, doesn't feel that way. Even when SoV deviates from Gaiden, it feels thoughtfully considered. Weapon arts, weapon forges, and the general stat rebalances all speed up Gaiden's slow gameplay, for instance. And SoV doesn't bring back the weapon triangle, because it would be stupid in Gaiden. And story-wise, SoV adds a lot of personality that isn't present in the original, but never feels contrary to it. Shadow Dragon didn't have the courage to attempt something like that, so it's left feeling like it has no personality at all as a result.

    @gtdfg4594 2 года назад +4

    Eh, as a Shadow Dragon fan, all I can say is... fair? Idk, it feels like we're playing different games whenever I hear people talk about it.
    First of all, the convos subtly add to the characters without needing to guarantee characters stay every single possible turn adjacent to eachother. Even the side characters get a little more flair to them. Of course, it's nothing compared to other games, but as a remake of a NES game, it adds meaningful but understated development - not everything needs to be a deep dive on a, frankly, generic type of character (however, one convo that is just bad is Hardin saying the obvious "I hope we stay as great friends", 'cause sequel bait).
    The soundtrack is amazing. I'm sorry, but downplaying it because every FE has good ost? 3 themes for all maps (not counting the final one) works very well - if I'm not mistaken, it transitions between important parts in the story, those being after Marth saves Archanea palace and Altea, respectively - this is just an example of how well integrated the OST is with the game. Honestly, I'm amazed how much of it are banger tracks, specially for their first attempt on the ds.
    It's the most "arcade" Fire Emblem ever has been - some of the best quality of life changes, such as seeing almost all info on an unit just by hovering the cursor over them, being able to skip every cutscene and enemy turns and attack animations, menus are very fast and responsive, units move very fast... Time doesn't tend to be wasted on this game.
    Considering new mechanics: Strength and weight being related finally made mages make use of the stat and gave more relevance to units that are more physically damaging than anything else. Reclassing, while clearly needing much more regulations in order to be balanced, make a striking difference on handling units like Jagen and Wolf, making them much more viable in the long run than they first were, as well as giving the freedom to reutilize any excess unit type that you might want to make into something more unique. The weapon triangle is more of a gentle change than anything else, but it does impact the viability of sword users not called Marth negatively.
    Not all of those are objectively great changes, but it plays very differently from the original.
    Even on Hard 5, I'd only used warp on quicker shopping and correcting positions; you really don't need to skip the maps, but you can.
    Some maps are genuinely long, but unlike FE 4 or part of Gaiden, they usually manage to go by rather quickly and have a huge concentration of things to do, managing to be interesting, _most of the time_ (Invading Archanea Castle: looting, saving people and enemy reinforcements are all activities that demand attention; mages cross the desert as usual, and Dragon riders destroy the Ballistas; assessing the perimeter of Archanea castle while needing to save a nearby town). My biggest problem with this is that Marth will always be the best candidate for the Boots.
    Besides ridiculous bosses in the beginning, Hard 5 is insanely fun to play - going from needing to move your units extremely effectively on the first map to start abusing reclassing, creating monsters to deal with the enemy armies, accounting for and preparing to retake Archanea - even the story feels more intense just by ramping up the difficulty.
    By the love of whatever is holy, the Gaiden maps are NOT MEANT TO BE ACESSED IF YOU PLAY DECENTLY. Those extra units and maps are at best, good substitutes for what you lost. I hear this all the time and it makes me a bit mad when I hear that people don't care about their units so they kill everyone just to access those maps, turning it into a slog of a game.
    I don't think people will ever like the animations and simple characters and story, and that is OK, specially the animations. But you can't say that it's bad because simple equals bad and call it a day. I much prefer this context to my gameplay than hours and hours of, although interesting, drawn-out drama.
    I need to recognize, however, that it's a matter of preference, but saying SD is bad and not bring any real arguments to the table made it a shallow segment.

    FE6 it's a rough landing and in a way inherited a lot of things from Kaga like bloated casts, sword/weapon imbalances.
    Shadow Dragon is a tough one for me. I want to like it for what it does (harder difficulties having threatening enemies rather than tanky ones...at least if you don't have a general with high def), struggle getting my head around new mechanics (forging and reclassing) but with how bland the presentation is and how the fandom was in those days (if they weren't trolling the franchise they were being overly elitist with absurd tier lists) I usually find myself not wanting to care. It's the most 'it's not you, it's me' rejection.
    Some say the art is very evocative of what computer strategy games looked like at the time (1991) and having an artist like Masamune Shirow was of interest because one can argue he peaked around 1991 and is similar to Kaga in the sense that his works have issues and are ultimately elevated by others (when one thinks of Ghost in the Shell it is probably the anime take on it by philosophical director Mamoru Oshii).

    REV is [jon bois voice] pretty good, a solid B tier game. I think Fates has the best skeleton in the series, so B tier is as low as I'd put a Fates game, but still! Pretty good.
    A lot is made of the gimmicks, but most of them are innocuous, and others can be circumvented if you have even a couple fliers (which you will) and even want to circumvent them (which you... may). I can't handwave them all away, of course. The elevators are a dumb nuisance. The stealth map is pointless and just becomes a Map With Enemies alluding to the concept of maybe possibly being something else. Fuga's Wild Ride is indefensible, but hey, it's less Wild than the Conquest version at least? I'd say the REV gimmicks can come across like the devs didn't take the time to implement them properly, which makes them feel much worse than they otherwise would. How bad is pressing start to blackscreen through the elevators moving, really? Like a speedbump where there shouldn't be one? Not a huge deal, all things considered, but the gamefeel can be catastrophic in those moments.
    As I see it, the two bigger problems really holding back REV gameplay are 1) lack of gold; and 2) limited deployment slots. For the entire midgame, they straight-up give you 0 gold. Like, actual mathematical 0. I spend aggressively in every FE and never run out of money past the earlygame... except in REV, where I've never not run out of money. And with REV being a golden route, why do they do the FE7 HHM thing where you can only deploy a handful of units sometimes? Makes no sense! The snow map would be actively good if you could bring lots of units, instead of arbitrarily only 6.
    You can approach REV every bit as hardcorely as Conquest, planning out all your seals, chugging tonics to reach thresholds, all that jazz. They've just replaced the enemy skills and formations of Conquest with higher stats in REV. You can see it as lazy stat inflation or as a more readable challenge. The problem is that the combination of 1) and 2) makes REV harder to engage with in this way. Affording forges, tonics, and seals becomes a real struggle, and good luck building units when you can't deploy the units you're trying to build. If REV more fully embraced its golden route status and showered you with cash and deployment slots, it would ironically be more hardcore friendly.
    I'd still encourage people to try big braining their way through REV, if that's their thing. Plan out all your precious skills. If you think the game devolves into a boring Ryoma stomp, well, simply don't use him you silly goose. Don't solo Sacred Stones with Seth either. You don't have to place your hand on that hot stove! I'm no brain genious and I've hardcore iron manned REV on lunatic with Ryoma and Xander banned, and had a good time. It's not for everyone apparently, but a Fire Emblem game with snappy 3DS UI, attack and guard stances, and a (sort-of) bounty of tools for stat manipulation to play around with is still pretty good.
    Also Birthright is A tier and my child you absolute heathens but I've typed enough.

    I dont see fe7 being in any way better than fe 6. Fe7 story sucks and u just spam 1-2 range. I feel like player-phase focused Fire Emblems are better gameplaywise than their counterparts. They are more entertaining, which is what I find most valuable.

    • @kylefields3951
      @kylefields3951 2 года назад +7

      I personally really dislike FE's consistent focus on skills with % based activations over skills with flat buffs. Fire Emblem is already a game where hit rates are a thing so I don't see the need to pollute the pool of play with that kind of stuff. I'm also not a big fan of growths believe it or not because that adds a layer of inconsistency that the design team simply cannot accurately plan for with a 100% success rate.
      With all of those considered it's no surprise that I consider FE6 to be one of the most enjoyable actual tactics based entries in the series because you are forced to actually contend with units that aren't a joke with a squad that usually only barely edges them out statwise and possibly due to supports. I think that the GBA entries are leagues and bounds ahead of the other games in the series due to their sheer earnestness and simplicity in the tactics gameplay.
      I also don't like how high the numbers have been getting. A number like 20 used to be insanely high and in Fe6 that's an actual Percival da Goat benchmark. The higher the numbers get the less they mean. The damn DBZ powercreep is now affecting Fire Emblem.

    • @unstablepc5913
      @unstablepc5913 2 года назад

      @@kylefields3951 Combat-wise, high numbers don't really mean anything in terms of power creep if all the numbers get higher. The way growths work, however, is another story. The closer you are to a multiple of 100%, the less variance you have. By having growths up to 70%, you're reducing the variance. The larger amount stats also means missing a point in STR or something is less of a big deal.
      I wouldn't say GBA is ahead of DS in terms of earnestness and simplicity when GBA has the rescue system.

The story of book 2 is simple but it drips with atmosphere, the snes trilogy just has this darker feel that never really came back. Kids these days just don’t understand the beauty of the inventory system, and how it’s monotonous design was intentional to reflect the monotonous aspects of real life war fund management. Unfortunately gaiden did away with this, but made up for this with monotonous map design. Again reenforcing the less exciting aspects of warfare, truely Kaga is a genius for when it comes to game design. Also counting squares is supreme, fire emblem games basically just play the map for you. Why even boot up three houses, the game has basically been beaten for you.

    I have no idea where FE7 is landing, but the fact that it isn't in the bottom half of the list is complete cap. Like, I don't get how people enjoy FE7 with how mediocre at best and utterly boring at worst most of the game is. People complain about FE6 having some random requirements (which are pretty straightforward "beat the chapter in less than # amount of turns or have x character still alive) for the gaiden chapters/route splits but nobody complains the arbitrary requirements of chapters like Living Legend, Pale Flower of Darkness or the Kishuna chapters. Not to mention how easily you can trivialize the game with Pent/Marcus/Hawkeye with there not being an equivalently strong character anywhere in FE6. Rutger is a great character for destroying a few enemies, but you can't just throw him at a group of weak enemies like you can do with Marcus or Hawkeye. Same with Milady and Perceval, both have their own weaknesses and the enemies in FE6 are much stronger compared to the wet noodles scattered about in the average FE7 map. FE6's ranking reeks of people who haven't played it tbh.

    • @rmd836
      @rmd836 2 года назад +3

      Not to stroke my elitism boner but FE6’s placement reaffirms for me that there’s a huge part of this fanbase that doesn’t actually play these games for the strategy. How anyone couldn’t recognize that Binding Blade is clearly the best GBA title is ludicrous for fans of a tactics series.
      Edit: Also Bopper hates FE6 and that seems to be a pretty commonly-shared opinion in his general fanbase.

    • @ProfessorBopper
      @ProfessorBopper  2 года назад +1

      @@rmd836 I would say that the GBA trilogy are probably the worst games in the series from a strategic standpoint. All three reward support grinding and big-ball-of-death strategy. Theoretically, FE6 circumvents this with the turn requirements for the true ending, but considering how awful chapter 24 is, I wouldn’t necessarily consider it a reward for playing well.
      FE6 excels as a strategy game, in my opinion, only when there are self-imposed challenges or restrictions (low-turning, no support grinding, 0% growths). All of the non-GBA games generally reward more strategic play better than the GBA games do.
      For many players as well, they’ll only play these games once. 20+ hours is a lot to commit for a replay, and many FE6 maps are either A.) really cruel or annoying to new players or B.) tedious when played slowly (which the game rewards). Chapters 3, 8, 8x, 14, 16, and 24 and the gaiden maps all fall into these categories (this isn’t to say that it’s all bad: Chapter 11A might be the best GBA map, with only the chance for Klein and Tate to not move being the major blemish).
      For non-gameplay, it’s also a game that just unfortunately suffers from being an early GBA title. The engine wasn’t fully optimized and it’s not as pretty an experience. The portraits and maps aren’t as crisp as 7 and 8. The story is also a major problem. Elibe may be the least interesting setting in the series and the ongoing conversation Roy has with Jahn in chapter 24 is a perfect encapsulation with how tedious the game can get while offering very little narratively (it’s a near polar opposite from the tightly-wound FE8).
      Don’t know why I’m responding now. I just accidentally stumbled on this comment four months later lol

    • @darkadvent610
      @darkadvent610 2 года назад +15

      Or maybe there are people who genuinely enjoy it, and you're trying to invalidate the opinions others may have just because they're so different from yours. People don't praise Shadow Dragon for its story and characters, they praise it for its gameplay. Reclassing allows for very fun strategies if you decide to use it, the game is relatively simple in terms of map design and story if you're counting that.
      The game was also specifically made with Ironmaning in mind, which is part of the reason why there are no Supports. There are no Supports in FE1, and the original creators of the franchise stated that the original intent was for players to see their units as disposable soldiers (just like in war), and to simply move on if somebody dies. Reclassing, Replacement Units, Gaiden-exclusive Characters, they all support this mentality and thus it leads to a very unique experience from the rest of the series due to the way that its designed.
      Don't try to pretend like people just circlejerk it in order to be contrarians to the popularity of the GBA and 3DS entries. Both DS games have their strong points and are good their own right.
