Mavis Staples celebrated her 80th birthday this year and is still going strong. Pre-covid she was touring. She's never stopped touring. She's still recording and doing collabs with current artists. She's a force of love and light and joy.
So sad that I missed her live last year. May have been last chance.
Saw her live just a few years ago - stunning.
I wouldn't be surprised if she's doing live streams tbh! I love her and her collaborations are always astounding. such range!!
I saw her in concert two years ago. AWESOME!!!!
Shamone!
💕💕 Marvin Gaye - What’s Goin On? 💕💕
You guys seriously should win some kind of award for improving race relations and for reaching across generations. LOVE IT. Thank you for being open, willing to listen, for being such a positive force in the troubled times. 💕💕
I agree. These two guys ARE AWESOME! You help me listen to old favorites with young, new ears! Thank you, thank you!
Also, GOT TO GIVE IT UP! Marvin had the jams!
That's beautiful
The twins are the best thing that happened in 2020!🏆🏆🏆
💞💓
Mavis Staples is legend! When she says “ Daddy” she’s telling her Dad to play that funky guitar!
Come Go With Me
I was in fourth grade
Pops Staples was actually playing the bass guitar on their songs!!
And he sure does !
Yeah, "Daddy" means something weird nowadays!
"Pops" Staples was a hugely underrated guitarist that had a tremendous influence on generations of younger musicians
One of the best
@@conjurehouseint and coolest
pfunk da bomb most definitely
He was never underrated in my house!
The entire group was underrated!!!!
Check out staple Singers "Respect Yourself" Folks now days really need to listen to the lyrics of this one. A gospel group that sounds like R&B. One of the first cross over groups back in the day. Thanks guys.
Great song
I’ll do you one better.... Mavis Staples, put out her own album called “have a little faith”, and there’s a song on there called “Pop’s recipe”. Basically about advice her father gave her and her siblings about how to approach life and handle day to day struggles and treat people. The chorus goes “Accept responsibility, don’t forget humility, at every opportunity serve your artistry, don’t subscribe to bigotry, hipocrisy, duplicity, respect humanity”.
Yes! Fantastic song. Brings back memories of just great, great music! Weren't we all lucky to have it? Thanks to these kids, they're bringing it all back with fresh enthusiasm and joy!
The Staples and Muscle Shoals Swampers were in the real nity grity for several years in the Burlap Palace!
@@midnyteblues Wow! Gotta check that out. The Staples were like going to black church for us white follks. The best, most vivacious sermon you'll ever hear in your life. Long live Gospel and r'n'b!
Back in the early 70s, you could listen to one radio station and hear the Staple Singers, the Carpenters, Rolling Stones, and many other types of music, all in one place... just as you are doing here. Thank you! P.S. Another vote for “Respect Yourself” by The Staple Singers. It’s a great song with a great message that I know you will appreciate 💯!
YO!
That’s right! We all listened to everything!
Shol could. I was just telling my kids that
Ain’t no smiling faces, lying to the races. Love the meaning behind this song.
She was telling all the members of her family to play those instruments....her’s was her voice!
Ain't no smiling faces, blind to the races...
Jody Kessly .....lying to the races...
@@sheilameyers152 Sheila, sometimes the lyrics sheets they jot down online are incorrect! It IS "blind to the races!" They were talking about heaven being a colorblind society. Unlike people on earth, that "smile in your face," when they don't mean it.
Jody Kessly ....ok ....but when I listen to the song it sounds like “lying to the races”....anyway no matter it resonates then and now ...I still love it!💕
Need to listen to Sly and the Family Stone-Stand...awesome song!
BLM right there
Dee Lawson
Everyday People is my fave
YASSSSS ANY FORM SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE!! WWHHHHEEEWWW!!!
Dance to the music Sly and the the family Stone
Stand is my fave S&TFS song!
The Staples are a family group that started in Gospel & went mainstream with this funky anthem! It's really her "daddy" she's talking to,(Pops Staples), & her siblings are playing instruments & singing. Mavis Staples still performs & is in demand , performing with LOTS of stars! ✌I played this record to DEATH as a kid & still luv it! Take care!😊
Prince was a big fan of Miss Mavis Staples and produced an album for her.
@@fkd1963 and she appears on his Diamonds and Pearls album. I still remember the joy I had seeing her in one of the videos from the album.
Nearly all the instruments you hear on this track are the "Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section" from Muscle Shoals, Alabama - only the horns and strings were recorded elsewhere (in Detroit). It *is* the family singing, though.
When Mavis sings "Sit down Servant", even I believe.
correct. she STILL performs and sounds great!
Today is Mavis Staples’ birthday! Love her. She does an amazing cover of “The Weight” with a few of the Greats. ❤️🎶
You should definitely check out The Weight by The Band from The Last Waltz, their final concert, with The Staples. (The whole concert is a primer of 60s-70s rock.
I never heard that version. This is why I like reading others comments. Thanks ruclips.net/video/TCSzL5-SPHM/видео.html
It does have a church vibe. They were raised in the church. Heaven was the destination
If you liked this, check out Gladys Knight & The Pips. Midnight Train to Georgia is great, for a start.
Different genre but check out Brothers Johnson - "Stomp" and "Strawberry Letter 23"
Yes, Strawberry Letter 23 is a great song!
Charmaine Gray thats a good one!
Don't forget "Get The Funk Outta My Face"
Most definitely. I still play to this day, fantastic musicians.
Stomp, what a tune!
Thank You! I feel honored you picked a song I suggested. I love you guys!
I would say that any of the artists you have reacted to, would have been happy to have you guys sitting in the front row at their gigs. Y'all should have a PHd in music appreciation!
AGREED 💯 - I was just saying this the other day. You gotta know these artists are/would be thrilled to know these young guys are enjoying their music with such pure reactions, not to mention that the songs are able to transcend time like they do!
I keep posting the twins reaction videos on my FB page, and I’ve had so many of my friends go down the listening rabbit hole with these guys - myself included. I’ve spent hours on their channel - and it has been worth it each time, because Infall in love with the music all over again. Plus watching a new generation hear them for the first time...it’s like chasing the high of my first time hearing them. ❤️🖤❤️🖤
Mavis Staples still performs! Had the opportunity to see her a couple of years ago live and she was amazing!
Yesss!!! I've seen her at ACL Fest within the last few years. That voice is unmatched!
Are you serious? Marvis is 3000 years old. Im 62 yo and she was old when I was in my teens. Her voice was amazing when I was young. I guess it aged like fine 🍷.
Yes she was with Buddy Guy performed in Charlotte, NC
Mavis Staples still rockin it today.
I remember when this song first hit the airwaves - yes, I am old!
Y’all should listen to tears of a clown by the miracles
One of my favorites by him!
Oh yes!!
Co-written by Stevie Wonder.
Can't stop dancing to this feel good song!
Listen to some Earth, Wind, and Fire their song, Reasons(live version) , there are so many hits. Also Heatwave their song, Always and forever.🔥
Or.. everything else by them
September. My High School's anthem. East High School. Denver.
Kelli Theis Yes! One of my favorites. They have so many hits I had chosen reasons because I love when Philip Bailey hit those high notes.
September, Reasons, That's the Way of the World, Getaway....so many good ones!!
Patricia Morgan, Yes! Love’s holiday, Can't hide love, Fantasy, Let's groove, the list goes on. True Legends💯
Gene Chandler, “Duke of Earl”. Love watching you two! You’re both so cute, I want to adopt you! Or bake you cookies! Hubby and I watch you every evening before sleep. It’s become our escape from the craziness going on!
Y'all will love singing Duke of Earl.
When my little brother sings that or "natural woman" I laugh hysterically.
J Panter Awww that’s so cute! The twins are certainly striking a chord with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds and bringing us together to appreciate music - it’s a universal language. They are so adorable to watch and listen with. I hope they realize the positive impact they are having on so many people . 🥰
"Respect Yourself" and "Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha Na Boom Boom) are also great songs by The Staple Singers.
I recommend these:
Yes We Can Can (the extended 6+ minute version, if possible) - The Pointer Sisters
Midnight Train to Georgia - Gladys Knight and the Pips
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
She Works Hard For the Money - Donna Summer
This Will Be - Natalie Cole
I was thinking just last night that "Yes We Can Can" was the perfect anthem for these times.
@@fabrisse7469 Lol! "I know we can can..we can can..why can't we.." Ha ha! LOVE that one!
They already did Gloria Gaynor I will survive.
This is so awesome! Gives that feeling of going to church. Talented singers with strong powerful sound 👍🏻Love you guys, wish you the greatest success ♥️
Have you guys heard The Brothers Johnson "I'll Be Good To You?" One of the best R&B songs, ever, imo!
Agreed. I've listened to it off and on for going on 50 years, Stella I wanna know if what you're feelin' is real...
I can recommend “Car Wash” by Rose Royce. (And the movie Car Wash too.)
Yesssssssss
70's R&B is the best!
You guys show that good music crosses all generations. Enjoy yall.
I so LOVE seeing how both of you experience this untried music your own way. We can see how you are hearing these old school treasures. It takes us back to when we first heard the magic ♥️🎵👌🏽
Do "Mr.Big stuff by Jean Knight or "Want Ads by Honeycomb oh and also "Band of gold" by Freda Payne
Freda Payne Was a smokeshow back in her day, so beatiful
Love love Band of Gold!
Yes! Mr Big stuff! Who do you think you are?
Oh YES to Band of Gold!!
GREAT MUSIC!
Check out the 1980 live version of "I've Got To Use My Imagination" by Gladys Knight and the Pips. Gladys Knight is one of the most gifted R&B soul singers of our time! And the dance moves by the Pips-----Classic smooth soul!
In a live version of this song, the singer sings: "Shamone! Shamone!" They created the expression, and of course Michael Jackson made it his own.
"Respect Yourself" Staples.
A couple of years ago, Mavis came back to the place where there were no smiling faces, lying to the races:
Muscle Shoals. Alabama where they showed the world how to come together and work together.
If you still haven't seen the movie, MUSCLE SHOALS, you are missing out on a ton of great music and performers both black AND white!
Great soul gospel group. Love you guys. Motown.... Temptations, 4 Tops, Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On! You guys bring such a smile to my face and I can use a reason to smile!
Bring on the Motown! They make me smile too ❤️🙏🏻
Several of their tracks were recorded at Stax, Memphis TN, and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, in Muscle Shoals, AL.
Look up these two studios and listen to some of the great music recorded there. Not only the local talent, but many top stars from other parts of the country and England did recordings in Muscle Shoals, such as Aretha Franklin, Neil Diamond, and the Rolling Stones.
Must listen : The Staple Singers "Let's do it again"
That song is a banger even till this day.
They ain't ready for that. That's grown folk music right there.
I agree, was that not a movie theme song!
Yessss
Had the privilege of seeing Mavis Staples! God Bless her, she is a force ... oh man, I just love her♥️☮️🙏🏻
Great reaction. The reference to smiling faces is from the song Smiling Faces Sometimes, released the previous year by the Undisputed Truth. Smiling faces sometimes tell lies!
Queen Mavis reigns!👑💖 Heaven is where they will take you! Please react to the Staple Singers and the Band performing The Weight from the movie The Last Waltz...it will blow your minds!
“The Weight” The Staples and The Band. I will thank you now, you can thank me later 🙂
I would love to see your reaction to anything on the Ohio Players 'Honey' album.
Goosebumps watching you young fella’s enjoying a classic that I grew up with! I’m 63 now, but still rocking to all decades, and genres of music! You guys know what’s up!
I love watching you guys fall in love with music that many of us fell in love with when we were younger! I especially love that you enjoy different genres. God bless you, guys!❤️🙏🏽
Take a listen to “Ode to Billy Joe” Bobby Gentry.
Keep up the good work on your channel.
Ann Priddy yes!!
OMG I forgot about that one. Good recommendation!
And the movie,!
I forgot how much I loved these songs, yes! And ‘respect yourself’. ❤️
You guys are too cute...I love watching your reactions...keep it up ❤️🎧🎼
You know they feeling it when Tim don’t pause it in the first few seconds.... first time I see them let the whole song play. Mavis will do that to you .... take you there🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Remember Hozier - Nina Cried Power (feat. Mavis Staples)? This is her with her family when she was very young.
Music does unite all people! Love that you’re doing this!!
Arrested development with Tennessee. Worth the time
Listen to Maze & Frankie Beverley "We are one" x
Dont forget that MERCH bro! I love it when you say that. Makes me smile
Peace Patrick.
Now, this is my kind of music‼️ Love The Staples Singers 👍🏻👏🏻🌟🥰‼️
Please react to, "play That funky music white boy by Wild Cherry. You'll love it
I loved the Staple Singers!
I love it when you go back to the music of my growing up.
Young men, I applaud you for honestly giving it a chance. Yes, it does have a "church" feel to it, but a lot of the greatest started singing in the choir. Even though I'm 49, they're still "before my time" I love their music, and watching old performances...even better!
Hearing this as a child, the up[beat music, I didn't care where "there was" I just wanted to be transported from where I was!
I love your comment. I didn't know where there was either but I wanted to go.
React to " Let's Do It Again" by The Staple Singers
I love this song! Love the bass solo in the middle.
Try some Janis Joplin maybe "Summertime" Live in 1969. Hard to find soul like this in a white lady lol. She can straight SANG I promise that. Bobby McGee is a fav of mine it reminds me of being about 3 years old and seeing my mom rockin to it. I was born in 69.
Jocelyn B
_Cry Baby_ and _Piece of My Heart_ are my faves by Janis
Love the Staple Singers and love you twins!. Thank you both. I'm old enough to have heard most of the songs you bring back. Much appreciated.
No one could ever touch that anointed voice!
Heard Mavis today on BBC radio 2. Funny beautiful lady. As for these two kids.... oh wow. Just love what they are doing! Plus I can’t stop saying “come on now” whenever I can 😊
This gospel group was all family, Pops Staples and his children.
Haven’t heard this good song in a long time! Thanks!
Yes! I was gonna suggest this song. Love them too!!
I appreciate that you introduced me to this artist. Thank you so much! Thumbs up!
great groove. Staples were good. how about the late Minnie Riperton who died young "Loving You" or Tammi Terrell (with Marvin Gaye) who died young "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"
I love at the end of Loving You that you can hear her saying her little daughter’s name, Maya. She’s now the famous Maya Rudolph from SNL and tons of other shows & movies.
Great suggestions, beautiful artists 💔
I saw The Staple Singers at the Fillmore East in NYC in the late 60’s. Amazing live or recorded.
Please do Mavis Staples’ “You Are Not Alone” ❤️❤️
She’s the last surviving member of the Staples family and it’s a beautiful, wonderful song ❤️
And I am SO happy you all listened to the Staples family as a whole! This is fantastic and I’m so happy! They’re great!
Try the Temptations, sly & family stone, the Spinners & Rose royce
Hands down one of my favorite Staples Singers songs! Great choice. You guys are great !
Got to listen to Phil Collins “In the airTonight” live. So iconic. You’ll love it.
Eric Schneider They did! You made ‘em famous lol
Love their reaction!🥰🥁🎼
@@steveslatten3009 Live is even better!!
Try pushing your grocery cart in the store in a straight line while listening to this. It can't be done! Can't be done. Love this!!
I feel so fortunate to have seen Mavis Staples in concert in 2008. Viva Mavis Staples. Thank you for introducing her powerful music to another audience.
If you really wanna mess with your head. Listen to these songs in order:
Alton Ellis - Girl I've Got A Date
Tony Scott - What Am I To Do
Harry J Allstars - Liquidator
The story goes that the drummer on ill take you there visited Harry Js studio to get some inspiration for a track he was working on. Well that became I'll take you there. He even tributes it in the first bar by hitting a one drop drum beat which is integral in JA music. What is also interesting is that after Ill Take You There became a worldwide hit, The Deltones would record a cover at Harry Js, the same studio where Tony Scott and Harry J Allstars would record their previous songs that Ill Take You There is based off of.
I really needed to hear the great Staples especially the way the world is in a Horrible mes of things.
Anyone that lived this era you know what I mean. Another great Staples Song is Respect Your Self. I'm A new subscriber please keep this channel going. Love You Guys. 💯💕😎
Mavis Staples is still performing God bless her 💕
Hey, it's your old white lady fan. I LOVE the Staple Singers, I used to go to church with some of the Staples (not the Singers, but relatives of theirs. although some of the band had visited from time to time, so I met some of the Singers!). This song is my favorite of theirs. Love you guys! Respect Yourself is another great song by them.
It would be great to see you guys do "Rufus -Tell Me Something Good" Love your videos!
I love your videos I love how embrace natural it feels for you to hear and listen to music that's a very honest gift not many people have it
One of my all time favorites. The smooth singing and beat....just love it! Gave me chills watching you all dig it! It also has the perfect Electric Slide beat....!! Darn, I loved the Electric Slide!
Grew up on the Staple Singers- they're from Chicago and my parents are in the gospel industry. This was a hit back then and it's still slamming!
One of the greatest songs from the 70's. Mavis's voice is a National Treasure.
Staple Singers were all over the airwaves when I was a kid. Another family of singers. I still love this.
Getting right into the good old gospel songs, sung by people full of goodness and grace when they should by every right be angry and bitter. Legends!
Wanna see all the OGs get up and dance, just play this song. Everyone loves this song!
Oh yes! I still have my original 45 from when I was a kid. Got to see Mavis Staples live a few years ago. She is phenomenal!
The great, LEGENDARY, Mavis Staples, with Pop Staples on the guitar! If you like this, you'll LOVE "Respect Yourself" !!!
That's right!! REAL SOULFUL TALENT!! GROOVE!! LOVE IT!!
The incomparable Mavis Staples with the lead vocal. A legend.
Mmmmm beautiful classic. I be loving i take u there. I'm feeling it cause ain't nobody crying.
Check out" The Band" with "the Staple Singers" doing "The Weight" .
The Staple singers with the Mighty Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section!. For decades, everybody thought they were black. Aretha Franklin called them Greaszy! Little DAVID Hood on Bass, Eddie Hinton with that sweet guitar solo, Jimmy Johnson on Rhythm guitar and the great Roger Hawkins on drums.
What a great song by a terrific group. Was lucky enough to see Mavis just a few years ago at the Greek Theatre inL.A. & she was fantastic!! Glad to see these young dudes getting turned onto to some great 70's music.
Hey guys! I have a suggestion that I'll comment every day until you react to it.... MARVIN GAYE'S "Got to give it up". I'm posting this on every video until you hear it! Trust me, you'll love it! Love you two!
What more does anyone need great music great company. Thanks for being there for us. Best regards from Europe!
You guys are funny to watch - enjoy watching your different reactions to songs. 😎
I remember dancing to this song in my new Oberheimer hockey boots at one of the best all nights skates ever when I was about 14 years old. We went out and asked for pledges at a nickel or dime for every lap around the rink for 24 hours to raise money for charity. I worked all summer to buy those skates and won a lot of speed skating races in them too. They had 'Canadian Reds' wheels that had case bearings and a jump bar under the arch. Man were they smooth to dance in. They made speed skating and dancing the Hialeah backwards smooth as silk. I skated double sessions every Friday & Saturday night and every Saturday and Sunday afternoon all summer. Some of the best days of my life because the music back them was phenomenal! Love to see the younger generations discovering this music for the first time. You've merely scratched the surface. Enjoy the ride.
I first heard of the Staple Singers back in the mid 80’s when I was these guys age. When they are old geezers like me, they will still be fans of Pops and his girls!😎
