I'm starting to realize a weird connection with bank robberies touching on social politics hahahaha. Want to vote on what I should watch next? Click here! www.patreon.com/jamesvscinema Have a great day!
loved this one.. now is (probably the) time to watch Deja Vu.. you would not be disappointed about Demzel (again) -- to be honest: never seen a bad, neither a mediocre movie with DW in it :)
If you like bank heist movies you should see The Town directed by Ben Affleck. I haven't seen it in a while but i remember I loved it and the direction
Spike gets a great performance out of everyone in the cast, top to bottom. The little characters in the mix, like the Sikh teller, the kid, and the Albanian wife, really liven up the drama and intrigue.
"Awesome seeing those two in a film together" That's Denzel and Chiwetel Ejiofor and they both acted together in American Gangster too. Phenomenal film. Even has Idris Elba. This is such a great film
Wish we got more movies like this again. Not some "artiste" film that tries to change the genre, not some blockbuster that's made to crush the international box office, it's just a quaint little gem with enough style to set it apart from the crowd. Also I still think of that "EAT THIS EAT THAT EAT THIS" moment to this day.
Oh wow another underrated gem from Denzel Washington! You've done Fallen, now Inside Man! Next up please check out "Devil In a Blue Dress" if you haven't already. Don Cheadle gives an Oscar worthy supporting performance. I'm loving your film choices - keep it up!
I'm so glad you watched this! This is one of my all time favorite films, and while it has great reviews I feel like tons of people never saw it or even heard of it. It's so fantastically written and directed.
I love this film and I have a crazy story about it. Spike Lee was in London doing promo for Blackkklansman and Clive Owen was in the audience to support him as a friend and any question that came up regarding acting in Spike Lee movies, Spike would jump to his feet and point and Clive going "THIS GUY KNOWS" it was very sweet
Denzel Sci Fi Detective movie... Deja Vu. Probably won't scratch the aesthetic itch you were thinking when you saw that shot, but a fantastic Denzel movie where's he's a detective with some Sci Fi elements. Virtuosity sorta counts too.
If you've never seen it, another heist film that hinges on the notion of "navigating New York" -- as a comedy -- is Quick Change (1990), with Bill Murray, Geena Davis, Jason Robards, Randy Quaid, and every weird-ass thing NYC place in their way.
"Keith, lemme look at your shoe... because I've never seen anyone put their foot that far up a guy's ass!" I laughed so hard at that line, I hope Chiwetel Ejiofor improved that line.
Loaded cast, fantastic writing, interesting & original soundtrack and a heist movie where damn near everyone wins. One of Lee's best. You brought up Denzel in a sci-fi detective movie and the first thing that came to my head was Deja Vu. Love that damn movie!
Darryl Chill Mitchell was already cast in this movie when he suffered the motorcycle accident that paralyzed him from the waist down. Denzel covered some of his medical bills and insurance so he could stay in the movie. Darryl not only praises Denzel's generosity, but credits this film in showing Hollywood that he is still an actor
I LOVE this movie. Such a slice of life from all walks of life and cultures. I haven't spent almost any time at all in NYC yet it feel as cosmopolitan as that city feels like it should be. The characters feel like they have depth to them. And the cast is awesome, the story is great. This movie is just a good time all around. Glad you liked it so much. Thanks for the reaction. See you again soon.
This was a REALLY well done movie - for so MANY different reasons - including a BIG thing that you missed. Too many movies now & in the last few decades have become very simplistic - very basic comedy, some action (not well done) & BASIC story. THIS movie however had a great story, a great way of breaking the timeline up, fantastic acting even by minor characters, the camera angles as you mention were great, the mix of cultures & ages, the great way it brought out the actual NATURE & impetus of each of the bigger characters (both the good ones & bad), the type of internal politics behind the scenes in various facets of New York. As you said it was great the way it didn't spoon feed you the story from the start through to the end but kept you THINKING & trying to put the story together. (This also helps get the movie more views as people in a lot of cases will want to see it again in order to catch if there were clues all along that they missed & what they were. This makes even 2nd & 3rd viewings of the movie enjoyable even when you know the outcome already. This doesn't hurt the financial situation for the filmmaker by doing so either.) There were 2 things that you didn't seem to notice (& as a filmmaker you should). The first thing was how well the scenery was done for the various scenes of the movie ie. outside area of the bank in New York city (where it was located & what was around it - & how that would work with a hostage situation), as well as how the bank owners office was - expensive, OLD-World ornate - from a wealthy WW2 home-style, very big/long [& empty of anyone, except the owner] - which showcases what the ROOTS of the bank are & how very alone the owner is within it (even psychologically), as well as so many of the other scenes (incl. the bridge at the beginning) & the various settings for Jodie Foster confidential talks etc. The 2nd thing you missed (which is also important for a filmmaker) is the great use of LIGHTING within the movie. Lighting CAN play such a great ROLE in a film when considered & used properly - adding to the atmosphere/mood, timeline, believability etc. There are times during this movie when the shading & shadows added so much to the suspense as when Denzel Washington was walked through the bank to see the hostages etc. I AM glad that you did catch so much with this film - as a well put together film DESERVES notice for its different elements - even if you have to go back to get the FULL appreciation in 2nd or 3rd watches of the film. (A movie like this one needs the 2nd watch to catch the story hints & details missed while a 3rd watch could probably allow you to focus more on the great film MAKING aspects used in more detail - even though some of those details ARE sinking in as you watch even the 1st time without a person realizing it.) I am glad that you just enjoyed the film, period. Have a great day.
Inside Man is one of my favorite Spike Lee films. It's really well casted and very slick. Also, I really like the score. Very noir and modern at the same time.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time!!! Denzel Washington and Clive Owen a great duo! And all the other great actors that appear in this movie too! The cast is amazing! 🤘😎
Love this movie. During a time of poverty (well, a previous time) this was one of the few movies I had on DVD and no cable so rewatched this a lot. It's just fun.
one of Spike's best movies. The cinematography, acting, story...all top notch. Denzel was at the top of his game. I have owned the score since the first time i saw this movie.
So glad you enjoyed this. Spike Lee is one of our greatest filmmakers and this just goes to show why. The cast, the music, the visuals, the writing and the NY vibe. Another great suspense crime film that takes place in NY that you might enjoy is 16 Blocks w/Bruce Willis and Mos Def. Keep it going James 🤘
I remember when this movie came out, no one really saw it coming. It was totally unexpected. There was really little to no hype for it with previews and stuff. It was awesome.
Saw it on the telly one night. First i was like "okay, a nice little bank robber movie. entertain me." and in the end "ha! he just walked out of the bank, just like he promised!" Was pleasently surprised.
Im so happy you got the Dog Day Afternoon feeling from this. I technically saw this first before Dog Day but this felt it was updated version of it. This is top 10 Spike Joints and i feel like he doesnt credit for how versatile he is. Also this cast (Denzel, Plummer, Jodie Foster, Willem Dafoe,Clive Owen)
Yo man, I dig the channel, and your reactions are second to none, and you're not afraid to speak your mind. I don't know if you've already done it, but if not, another great Spike Lee joint is "25th Hour." Definitely watch that one.
Nearly fell off my chair when you referenced Dog Day Afternoon! Just re-watched it today, what a stunning piece of film history! Been down the Pacino rabbit hole and also recently re-watched And Justice for All! Anyhoo, this one is a belter 👏
More Spike Lee films need to be reacted to. By all reaction channels, honestly. Spike Lee does amazing things with the camera, story, sound design, and racial scenarios. "Do the Right Thing" is prolly his most well-known movie, and it is great, but my personal favorite is "25th Hour." Edward Norton is the perfect...Edward Norton role.
“The Killer Inside Me “ is an interesting movie that gets looked over. Really cool main character development (Casey Affleck) and storyline that has some developments that have you wondering if the “bad guy” will actually get away with it.
I love this movie! I think it made me a fan of Clive Owen too. I love clever "mysteries" and the unveiling of their answers. The "plan" for the bank robbery was very cool.
I LOVE this movie and I’m so glad you saw Dog Day Afternoon before this. There’s a list in my head I consider quintessential New York movies and DDA and Inside Man are two of them. If you live in the NYC area, as I do, you know those movies when they’re done perfectly which this is.
There’s another Denzel detective film barely anyone knows about. ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ is a film noir in which Denzel is a private detective in the 50’s that got entangled in a dangerous case. It goes in line with ‘Chinatown’ and ‘L.A. Confidential’. It’s an underrated and unknown gem from 1995. Nobody has ever reacted to it. James, you could be the first to do so.
Great reaction man, I remember seeing this in the Theater when it was released, was living in Raleigh at the time. Seen it several times since. Great movie.. 👏👏
I believe this is the only film Spike Lee has directed that he didn't write. A conventional movie coming from him but it was well directed and acted. Enjoyable. Thanks for reacting.
I was hoping you would get to this one day! Great heist movie! I don’t have time to watch your reaction yet, but I’ve pre-liked and will be watching your take on it tonight.
I wish Spike Lee made more films with this kind of budget. IM is one sweet badass police procedural. One of the great actor/director collaborations in movie history with Spike Lee and Denzel Washington.
I know the watch list is ever growing and never ending, but another underrated movie with fantastic writing and a excellent cast is Redbelt. David Mamet wrote and directed it.
Spike knocked it out of the park with this one! I watch it occasionally..I mean a heist movie, detective story AND a WWII nazi mystery in one?? One of his best
I would have liked to have heard your reaction to the ringtone by the guy in the bank who got beaten. Spike Lee's commentary track on the disc is worth a listen. In it, he says the Denzel Washington's line "I bet you can get a cab, though" was ad-libbed.
Love your reactions! Only problem is I have to go back and watch some of the movies (like this one) again because it's been so long since I did.... well, that's not really a problem, right? Crime as a venue for social commentay has always been a thing. Gotta get people to pay attention.
For Antje great Denzel movie, watch The Siege. It's got Tony Shalhoub costarring, it's really great
If you like bank heist movies you should see The Town directed by Ben Affleck. I haven't seen it in a while but i remember I loved it and the direction
I think you’d like:
Lucky number Slevin
Law abiding Citizen
This is the most “mainstream” film from Spike Lee and it’s amazing like most of his films. Clive Owen is awesome and Denzel is Denzel, nuff said.👍
I've never seen a Denzel movie I didn't like, he is so intense in all his roles. Such a legendary actor.
Spike gets a great performance out of everyone in the cast, top to bottom. The little characters in the mix, like the Sikh teller, the kid, and the Albanian wife, really liven up the drama and intrigue.
🫵🏻🤟🏻👍🏻
Thank you James. This is one of my favourite movies of all time. Can't wait to see what you think of it.
Had a really great blast with this. Deserves a rewatch!

Have you seen Widows? Or Sexy Beast? I reckon they fit those criteria. Also, Out of Sight.
@@tetleyT Out of Sight was a phenomenal sleeper of a movie.

Oh yeah, one of my old acting teachers is in this! Denzel's girl, that's her. Good teacher.
I'm so glad you watched this! This is one of my all time favorite films, and while it has great reviews I feel like tons of people never saw it or even heard of it. It's so fantastically written and directed.
Totally slept on by other channels!!
This is a very smart and intense film that also manages to be hilarious. Love it

YES!
"Keith, lemme look at your shoe... because I've never seen anyone put their foot that far up a guy's ass!"
I laughed so hard at that line, I hope Chiwetel Ejiofor improved that line.

Oh man, you want to see Denzel in a sci-fi detective movie? Then you would love Deja Vu. It is maybe the most underrated Denzel movie.
James: Spike Lee and Denzel Washington. That's pretty great!
If you want more of that combo, you should check out Malcolm X (1992).
I loved this review! Thank you. Subscribed. 💪🏾
I don’t how I missed this one. Great flick.
I remember watching this for the first time back in 2006 on a DivX cd. The moment the Indian song kicked in I knew it would be amazing.
The actress who plays the hostage named Miriam also played one of the tellers in “Dog Day Afternoon.”
My man! This is the 2nd reaction to this movie in the last few months and I am GLAD you did this since its one of my fav Denzel movies
NYC is a cesspool of crime, homelessness and drugs. Because of modern liberal policies.
But I'm happy you're happy that it's a diverse place...

Great story and great casting. RIP Christopher Plumber - truly one of the greats.
Plummer...
Inside Man is far and away my favourite Spike Lee film. Great story well executed.
This story, this cast, this take on dialog. Spike is just flexing and showing that he can do a different take when he feels like it.
Denzel & Chitwetel were in American Gangster too, as family members :)
This is one of my favorite movies. Such an awesome film.
This and Match Point are my favorite Spike Lee movies. So well written, with class A acting, cinematography and that opening song!
Love this movie. During a time of poverty (well, a previous time) this was one of the few movies I had on DVD and no cable so rewatched this a lot. It's just fun.
My man James don’t miss with the reactions!!
Yessssir!!
one of Spike's best movies. The cinematography, acting, story...all top notch. Denzel was at the top of his game. I have owned the score since the first time i saw this movie.
i love how noticeable how the middle finger with the ring on it was put in after the fact i cant unsee it.

I’ve enjoyed this film for many years, Quality cast, quality director, great film.
Also saw it in the cinema and my hubby and I were blown away by it. The cast ensemble is incredible and no one saw the ending coming.
Few people can be as cool as Clive Owen... so you gotta cast Denzel.
Theres a sort of Al Pacino vs Robert de Niro vibe with Owen and Washington!
You will love Quick Change, bank robbery movie, with Robin Williams and Geena Davis
By far my favourite heist movie of all time, the direction/camera is on point, and the actors ate up their roles
Yo man, I dig the channel, and your reactions are second to none, and you're not afraid to speak your mind. I don't know if you've already done it, but if not, another great Spike Lee joint is "25th Hour." Definitely watch that one.
I see you loved the famous Spike Lee double dolly shot on Denzel 😉
So glad to see this on your watch list, great movie! Very underrated.
One of the most underrated films and film endings ever!
P.S. Throw me some sci-fy book recommendations
I gotchu! I just finished The Caves of Steel by Asimov. Definitely check that book out! Solid read too!
@@JamesVSCinema Absolutely will! Have a great one man! Appreciate all your work and positivity
Nearly fell off my chair when you referenced Dog Day Afternoon! Just re-watched it today, what a stunning piece of film history! Been down the Pacino rabbit hole and also recently re-watched And Justice for All! Anyhoo, this one is a belter 👏
Man on fire as a suggestion if it’s not already on the channel
This is DEFINITELY one of my favorite heist films.

I enjoy watching these kinds of movies. They're so good, so well made. Worth the time.
I LOVED this when it came out. Thought the story telling really stood out, both from other films of the genre but also from his Spike Lee Joints.
Damn, another banger with Denzel, this and Fallen, loving the film selections.
“The Killer Inside Me “ is an interesting movie that gets looked over. Really cool main character development (Casey Affleck) and storyline that has some developments that have you wondering if the “bad guy” will actually get away with it.
def one of those movies where whenever it's on tv i'll watch it
Denzel in a SciFi Detective Film: You want Virtuosity or Deja Vu.
Fun fact: the lady who played the character “Miriam” in this film was in Dog Day Afternoon, funnily enough playing another character named Miriam.
One of the best bank heist films ever made. Bank heist films is a fun genre.
Fun fact. Spike had an extremely tight deadline to put this movie together. And they wrapped filming in just 12-13 weeks Jun-Aug
"I wanna see Denzel in a scifi detective film" check out Deja Vu!
I love this movie! I think it made me a fan of Clive Owen too.
I love clever "mysteries" and the unveiling of their answers. The "plan" for the bank robbery was very cool.
YES! I remember watching this with my mom back when it came out and even as a kid, I was invested
Love your channel man, you are a top quality producer and a really cool guy.
I appreciate that my friend!
One of my favorite films. Great writing, acting and direction. Thanks James❤
I LOVE this movie and I’m so glad you saw Dog Day Afternoon before this. There’s a list in my head I consider quintessential New York movies and DDA and Inside Man are two of them. If you live in the NYC area, as I do, you know those movies when they’re done perfectly which this is.
Spike Lee is an amazing director. Love the open theme - Chaiya chaiya
You mentioned dog day afternoon so much RUclips is recommending me I watch it now 😂
Another great Spike Lee film that you should check out is Blackkklansman.
18:02 "Spiked Up", I see what you did there!😜
There’s another Denzel detective film barely anyone knows about. ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ is a film noir in which Denzel is a private detective in the 50’s that got entangled in a dangerous case. DenzelWashington played the hell out of the movie JOHN Q
Always wanted a sequel to this film. One of Spike's best.
7:46 is that Willem Dafoe as a cop just chilling in the background? Does he have a legit role or is he being a an extra in the background?
He's literally a character in the movie my dude.....
Great damn movie! My personal favorite Spike Lee joint.
I believe this is the only film Spike Lee has directed that he didn't write. A conventional movie coming from him but it was well directed and acted. Enjoyable. Thanks for reacting.
YES!! LETS GOOO!!! Fantastic movie with GREAT performances!!! 👍😎👍
I was hoping you would get to this one day! Great heist movie! I don’t have time to watch your reaction yet, but I’ve pre-liked and will be watching your take on it tonight.
Just recently watched this and was surprised that there were basically no reactions to it. Well-written and subversively not-so-dark heist movie.
I saw a reaction to this by Dos Cavazos.
The main thing I remember from this movie (which is great) is the intro with Che yea music originally from the bollywood movie Dil Se.
I noticed this is one of the only movies where Denzel comes off as incompetent. I can’t think of another right now.
love this movie
Really damn good watch
One of my fav Spike and Denzel collab!
Good flick. ONLY complaint is that I think it could have been a solid half hour shorter and better paced but yeah, fun stuff.
My fave sci-fi book of all time is Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card!
Deja Vu Should have been your next video... Denzel Washington Sci-Fi mystery
Le Cercle Rouge by Jean-Pierre Melville is a GREAT heist film, well worth a look
James! Is the sci-fi you've been reading The Expanse books? I hope you'll check out the series one day. My absolute favorite show of all time :D
Finally I been hopping my you’d get to this haha I may be 6 months late but I’m happy to see it now to watch 🍿🥤😁
I would have liked to have heard your reaction to the ringtone by the guy in the bank who got beaten.
Spike Lee's commentary track on the disc is worth a listen. In it, he says the Denzel Washington's line "I bet you can get a cab, though" was ad-libbed.
I loved this movie growing up.
James you should react to The Menu!!
For me, this and Flight are Denzel Washington's greatest film performances....well, and Training Day...there's so many really.
One of my favorite Spike Lee joints.
Love your reactions! Only problem is I have to go back and watch some of the movies (like this one) again because it's been so long since I did.... well, that's not really a problem, right?
Anyway, here's a couple of gems I don't know if you watched them already, but it's right up your alley, and I've been meaning to suggest for a long time but never did cause, you know... I'm a lurker, not a commentator. Here you go:
- The Man From Earth (2007)
- Frequency (2000)
Go ahead and look them up, or not, but just trust me on this: you'll love them.
