      Both were acceptable until the Turkish government in the Turkish Republic made it official and stoped all letters sent to Constantinople

      Only SINCE 1930. From 330 until then -- so for 1600 years -- it was Constantinople. And from 330 until 1453, it was the capital of the Byzantine empire.

      In 330, Constantine moved the capital of the Roman empire there from Rome, and it remained the capital of what we now call the Byzantine Empire from then until it was finally captured by the Seljuk Turks in 1453.
