It really is such a beautifully cathartic album, I don't think there is any other artist out there who has managed to create such heavy metal music that is truly accessible to people who don't listen to metal music. I've shown this album to many people over the years who aren't metalheads and many times they respond with how beautiful it is, something about the guitars and the drums just create this gorgeous atmosphere and allow the vocal to take you on this journey, even if you can't understand a single word he is saying (it's one of my favorite albums and I still don't know a single lyric lol)

Love how happy this made you. Deafheaven is a band that deserves all the love. You are right, it's about feeling, and being wrapped in a blanket of that feeling. Thank you for this.

first time watching a papa squat react video. from the first minute of this i could tell that you were very open-minded, smart and curious. i'm a big rock and metal guy and didnt "get" this song the first several times my best friend played it in the car, only the fact that it wasnt for me...at first. but one day it clicked.
you got it right away, all of it. the charm of it, the energy, the details. just wanted to commend you on your patience and attention to detail. nice video, cheers.

Honeycomb by this same band is a great next point. There's a live version from Audiotree that shows how he does his vocals and is musically super tight. That track is nice halfway point between their heavier sound here and their current softer sound.

To your comment about the vocalist killing his voice. There is a proper way to do these screamed vocals that doesn't hurt your voice in the slightest, many metal vocalists who do this professionally train for years to develop their voice safely. Guys like him can do this and just immediately talk as if nothing happened, however yes if you do this wrong you can really mess up your voice and it has happened. Over the past 10-15yrs, development of standardized harsh vocal training has popped up, spearheaded by vocal coach Melissa Cross, who has really pushed the metal community forward in a safe manner.

Interesting! I think I've heard that before, but it seems crazy to be able to do that with your voice, then turn around and have a conversation as if nothing happened. So cool.

do yourself a favor and listen to this entire album, either this or new bermuda. pretty sure you'd appreciate them as much as you did this song

i'd recommend Ordinary Corrupt Human Love by a mile, i personally like New Bermuda more but while still a great album, it is much closer to being a more-straightforward metal album. OCHL is a lot more dynamic with more soft parts, and is overall a lot more interesting.

George and Kerry don't right songs much. Most of their music are mini pieces. They run 10 min or longer regularly. Dream House is their masterpiece. It literally saved me when I was on my death bed. Listen to all the albums. Their all amazing.
