Please tell me how this will make a difference? Lower prices mean lower quality drugs, Loss of jobs in the pharma industry, zero counselling from pharmacists. Pharmacists save thousands of lives every year by catching prescribing errors from doctors. Pharmacists have already taken a 50% decline in wages over the decade. Low profitability for pharma companies means they reduce production leading to drug shortages. Generic drugs are already cheap and cost about 10% of brand name drugs. Drug shortages are real and already happening. The prices of several generic drugs have been reduced recently. This investigative journalism is lacking.

The chemical properties of the thing being supplied are not improved by an illegal kickback or even a legal markup. The kickback is paid to the retailer who cannot use that money to improve the quality. If someone has shady purchasing practices, their labor practices can be expected to be equally bad. This practice of taking kickbacks has taken place *During* the wage decline. This piece sheds light on the real economics of drug sales, which can better inform our worker-rights advocacy. I am with you on that.

This was the reason for price disclosure in Australia which drove down prices yet pharmacies still get a "rebate" of 85% on some lines. I worked as a pharmacist at a place charging people $71.70 for a set of 3 scripts that cost a combined $7. That pharmacy did up to 300 scripts a day. Yet pharmacist wages have been stagnant for nearly 20 years. Owners greed through the 90s and early 2000's has killed our reputation. Professional standards and integrity in this industry are non-existent.

Most of it has side effects worse than the condition it's prescribed to treat. Some medicines cause other long term health issues. Saying pharmacists are saving lives is just plain ridiculous.

You know what profit margins we are talking about if everyone has their hands out? This is so disgusting. This doesn't even include the politicians "rebates" which we will never hear about. This means our expensive prescription meds we have to have really should cost as much as a cup of coffee.

    • @hezmora
      @hezmora 4 года назад +1

A basic 30 day script should cost less than $10 no matter what.
By basic, I mean the most commonly prescribed drugs that have been around for years. (I'm not referring to new meds or those used to treat rare diseases. These cost more for various reasons.)
Those common pills probably only cost between $0.03 - 0.10 a piece to make. So that's $0.90 - 3.00 manufacturing cost for a month's prescription. At the highest amount of $3.00, that gives the company a $7.00 profit on 1 script. Multiplied by 12 months in a year, that's $84 profit per year per script. Now consider that one medication could easily be prescribed to over a million people per year. That's $84 million dollars from just 1 medication! Many of these companies have dozens of medications and they're sold at much higher markups than my example, so we're talking billions of dollars coming in. Even without majorly jacking up the price, these pharmaceutical giants are making massive fortunes!
Obviously I gave a very simplified breakdown. This is just an example in order to show you how much money these companies stand to make.
I understand the companies have quite a lot of overhead. This includes research, marketing and advertising, legal, distribution, etc. But believe it or not, they can and do cover all these costs (and more) with each pill just costing a few cents, and some cost only fractions of a cent.
That sounds hard to believe, but you have to realize they are selling millions of pills a month, billions a year. (If one person takes 3 pills a day, that's 1,095 pills per year. Multiply that by an extremely conservative estimate of 1.5 million customers per year and you get 1,642,500,000 pills sold. Then multiply that by the profit on each pill and it's a boatload of money!)
The longer a pill is manufactured, the cheaper it becomes to create. A pill is most expensive before it is released and when it's brand new, because that's where most of the costs are incurred. But after it's been sold for several years, all the upstart expenses have been recouped.
*Long story short:* Big Pharma could easily make medication affordable to everyone, even those without insurance. They simply don't want to, because they know they can get away with charging much more and they're making sickening amounts of money.

Canada is Funding organised terrorism from our soil. See how that's done!! And it's fully supported by our system. It's happening in health care(fake dr anyone), real estate(1 foreigner buying up 50+ properties across Canada, while Canadians who've contributed for many generations, wind up homeless because they can't afford 2500$\month for a bachelor worth 300$\month), and many other ways their wreaking havoc on our systems.. Oh the crap we have to look forward to. Because facing the truth is too difficult. Where does one get the $$$$$ to buy up 50 properties anyways???? If life was SO AWFUL back home, how do you become a millionaire in 10months??? Not all. But MANY are involved.. We weren't helping the poor little refugee children who didn't have the money to buy an impressive resume.. But they use images of these children to get in as refugees, or straight up buy their way in. Because our government is corrupt and is providing loopholes that hurt our people(they privately get their own kickbacks I'm sshhhhhure). I'm all for helping ACTUAL refugees. But I'm Not ok with rich foreigners masquerading as survivors of war, hiding behind children who lose their chance at coming here, to rich terrorists, who go in to cause serious issues in our communities. We should be deporting those who commit crimes against those who live here. And immediately bring in a child in need to take their place.. And everyone gets mad when you try to defend your own people, Because the truth makes them unconfortable. I don't care about race, but it's obvious they have no respect for us. Coming here to conduct illegal business, with no regard for how it impacts the people here. Not ok.. Justice WILL PREVAIL!!! Nobody's getting away with ANYTHING!!!!!
Just my "opinion" from what I've observed in my community... Most of this community is owned by foreigners.. There's no excuse.. The truth is available to anyone who cares to know. Can we complain about the consequences when we ignored the truth and coddled those who wish to destroy us.?? I don't think so. In retrospect it's not any different than what happened to my ancestors.. So there ya go.. It is what it is

The issue is not as clear as the programme suggests. In most businesses, you´re likely to get a lower price the more you buy. This lower price might be reflected as a discount on the invoice or a periodical cash return. The pharmacy can reduce their prices to the public by the amount of the volume rebate they get - or not. If they don´t reduce their prices, then market forces should lead to them losing sales. There´s capitalism at work for you! The good and the lousy. It´s a lousy system, but no-one has invented a viable alternative, so far.

If you are a pharmacist and reading this please write to the CBC Ombudsman and tell them your side of the story. The average person is going to think pharmacists get a $7 kickback which is misinformation. Pharmacists need to stand together and speak up because the media is trying to portray you as greedy beings. It is irresponsible journalism to leave out what thousands of pharmacists have to say. A pharmacists declining wages should be reason enough for you to speak up.

Here's a idea, how about you just stop breaking the law and cheating the consumer. It's doesn't matter if it's a rebate of 70%, 7%, $7 or 7¢, it's suppose to be Zero. Don't be Goofs...

@@BigKarl519 do you get upset when your grocery store negotiates prices with its vendors? Food and medication is a business at the end of the day. No one wants to work for free.

@@michellecollison6191 I was told it was because we might influence a patient to take one pill over another for a pen lmao ridiculous.

    • @michellecollison6191

Lmao That sounds silly that you are not allowed pens. Generic drugs are already so cheap and only 10% the cost of brand name drugs. In most cases the active ingredient is also manufactured in the same factory for several generic drug companies. The only thing that matters is the medication work well for the patient and pharmacists know this too.
