Nice work John (Lovelace).... so glad to see this series online as it is not carried on any TV channels locally in SW ONT. I've been a fan for a long time, you and your crew do a nice job of putting together a nice show. I loved the last series you did with your 185 amphib.
For everyone else, "Affordable" is a relative term.... helicopters are not cheap, with decent used R22 selling in the 200K range and costing 300+ per hour to rent. These are as affordable as it gets in the whirly-bird market.

All this sounds like so easy and affordable for a normal working guy and like so many other comments in here are so true.
The reality is to have a aviation-mechanic for the correct maintenance, min. little Hangar etc. ...
Did I hear right? you don't need an official Helicopter license? ... i am pretty sure:
    no way here in Germany!
I would love to have a Mini 500 but u need 2 seats to share all the fun and the awesome experience with another person of flying a 🚁 in my opinion.

TransferAir Totally true. It depends also under which category it falls. If insurance is needed, getting it airworthy. Now with the lycomming engine its really reliable need also to consider maintenance, labour. I tell you honestly, owning a flying vehicle is cool fun but the money you need to invest after it is huge and scary ! You just not need to be passionated, but crazy & full of cash only then you won’t see all the money you’re spending. I didn’t realize this until i decided to own my personal little aircraft, especially in EU with all kind of papers you need for anything which can keep up in the air. Here in EU with these kind of machines you’re viewed as a rich person and needless to say you know how tax department is going to light your candles. People who take the big step in going into ownership i have nothing else other than just respect for them. In the meanwhile i’ll rent ...

many people are choosing to make their own helcopters, its relatively simple to do if you have a basic knowledge of diy and a tool chest. You can pick up the parts for a couple of hundred dollars and away you go. You should always get a qualified pilot to have a look over it before you take to the air, especially if you have no previous copter experience .

John Wayne going to try to answer semi serously a year after you asked it. now im no pilot so this is just my internet knlowlege speaking, but i do believe the mosquito is very good at autorotation. if a pilot is smart, there really shouldnt be many senarios throught the flight where they couldnt safly land even it the engine completely stopped.

I apologize, I just found this site, but it looks interesting
I do need some help. I'm trying to find info on a 2 seater, dual rotor, counter rotating, tailess helicopter. It was built by a gentleman in California(of course) where I believe he owned a large machine shop. (If I remember correctly, it was featured on the Discovery Channel on a program that used 'tabs' on the right side of the screen for each featured article. The name of the show may have been 'Discovery' on some type of discovery/science program.) He referred to his helicopter as a 'commuter' flying between autos and airplanes. I can only assume he intended for it to fly between 500ft agl and 1000ft agl. I believe his intention was to make them commercially rather than homebuilt kits, but you never know!
I am not rich, as a matter of fact, I live paycheck to paycheck, I'm just curious as to whether or not his helicopter succeeded in being marketed.
If you have any information, please contact me at
    efhlith@gmail.com
    Thanks,
    And BLUE SKIES

Thomas W. Brinkley cost the same as the average new car/jeep/ truck? 35k not too bad tbh. people spend more on a corvette. can honestly buy that and a newish car for only 15k and you only spent 50k total. make close to 6 figures and you good

You don't need a license or registration for these in the ultralight category...Mosquito is the way to go if you just want to fly, don't care about cross country, airport to airport, general aviation flight.

Thomas W. Brinkley what if you have a good amount of money, enough to buy a brand new 4 seater helicopter like a Robinson r44, but you don't want to spend it all and want to have a lot of money in the bank?

Joshua Aponte its a Canadian Home Rotors "Safari" ,...it used to be called the "Baby Bell" until apparently Bell spit the dummy and they re-named it..but thats only what I heard.. what I know though... it is one of the most awesome homebuilt helicopters around... not sure what current situation is.. but they used a "Bubble" from a Bell-47 in the early days. Had a Mini 500 over a decade ago..was crap and deadly... been flying Gyros last few years.... but looking for a good EXP helo atm too :-) Be in touch my friend..

Accident rates with small choppers are very high. Proceed with caution.....

you just have to know the safest way to fly it. i wouldn't recommend jumping in one with no knowledge what so ever

Ain't no such thing as an "affordable" helicopter unless you're very rich, a corporation or the military.

Holy Crap! $150k These things (Safari) look strangely like the Bell 47. Same everything.

I had a Safari and I have a Bell 47. Not much the same on them except the bubble. A used Bell already flying is as cheap as a Safari Kit. Still a few 47's doing ag work and can be brought back to Standard.
