Because although she might appear adorable in this interview, this was about the time when she expressed a lot of public bitterness & angst about being a child athlete in the mercilessly strict Romanian gymnastics system. I don't call comments like (re: her 1987 AA World title) "As soon as I stepped off that podium, I was a slave again" very gracious - although I'm certainly not blaming her, I understand how she would feel that way.
Posing for Playboy isn't a crime! What's a crime is that these young girls, at that time, had few options as their schooling was neglected for their sport. FIG should be ashamed of itself for letting things get this far! The Wall had fallen and there was simply no money under the new regime. She survived the photo op and is a much better person for it.
In today's society, posing for Playboy is still considered respectable and a step above everything else in the porn industry. Many playmates have gone on to become successful business women and even have careers in the film industry--without turning to porn! Instead of shunning people, there should be more understanding as to why there is a porn industry and what purposes it serves our society. Aurelia is still a positive role model because she understands the choices she has made in her life and can actually mentor young gymnasts through the dangerous mind fields. Therefore, stop looking at this young girl as a fallen angel! She made lemonade out of the lemons she was served! BTW, Nadia fell into the claws of a very abusive man who mistreated her after she defected. I don't see anyone making a public spectacle out of her misfortune, so don't do it with Aurelia!

Have you not been listening to the conversations of these girls when they grow up? In a great many cases, some estimate that every seventh girl and boy has been sexually abused by their coaches, choreographers, state appointed guardians and trainers! The children are so sheltered from real life that they don't have coping skills to deal with interpersonal relationships or going shopping! Women have had to drop their knickers to get a simple role on Game of Throwns! Yet, you would call these women bitches and whores! How dare you be their judge and jury! You have no right to make an assessment of their situation nor call them out of their names! As an aide worker in developing countries where girls are always at a disadvantage to boys in terms of being poorly educated, terribly fed and sexually abuse, I can honestly say how much of an uniformed masochist you are on the topic of pornography, sex trafficking and sexual abuse of children. Stay in your lane, because I will not tolerate you calling anyone a bitch or whore because you view them as fallen individuals because many had to use their sexuality to put food on the table. Until you have been there, keep your cave man ideals to yourself! Many of these gymnasts come away traumatized for life: first the physical and mental abuses of their coaches and then sexual abuse by the coaches and public. Until you have walked in their shoes, keep your filthy mouth shut!
