There is a problem with how information is spreading on RUclips. Good information could be blocked by the algorithm ( or not shown at all), while fake-news is spreading. Also there could be problem of the level of education of some creators ( or lack of morals).
Many RUclips "educators" seem to be just high school/college students that's very enthusiastic about a field. Once money starts flowing in and they turn RUclips into a career, they have to keep pumping out videos for the money. The solution to speech you don't like is more speech. Having RUclips act as the gatekeeper to make sure that people only see what you consider the truth is incredibly dangerous. They already do enough censorship. That said, love the channel.
If you stop people watching videos on 'miss-informative' videos then how will people get an idea of what some people believe? Just be cause you watch one, doesn't mean you'll believe it.
Wow, this is one of the very few videos talking about this issue without just saying “the algorithm is a terrible creation that loves bad things and hates legitimate things” thank you so much Stickman

This is the unfortunate point where you all make nice passionate accurate working content. While others try to ram false info down people’s throats.. keep it up, yer doin this place a grand service.
The solution is reporting. I try to report almost all these types of videos which I think could mislead and do not have accuret knowledge. To save folks time. By the way if someone is in a country having RUclips office he could have a meet with the RUclips officials to discuss this issue and also enjoy some good tea.
I agree 100% with this. Clickbait and misleading RUclips video titles and video photos for things that are science based. It really kicks up a lot of dust and makes it hard to sort out the right and wrong videos because the clickbait video will have just as much, or more, popularity as the more honest one.
@@hopelessdecoy No. "First lie wins" is based on human cognitive studies about how most human minds will accept what they are told, build cognitive structures in their brain about that item, and then it becomes hard to destroy those mental links. And if a person already had a biased towards the lie, then the links are even stronger, the lie is more effective, because it reinforces the mental links we already have. But it's true of many untruths. Many people still think humans only use 10% of their brain or that we eat X number of spiders a year in our sleep, simply because they heard these lies early on and their brain refuses to break the mental bonds.
While its unfortunate that a lot of channels spout nonsense, it still is a mirror of how people act. This channel might be smart, but not everyone is smart. Actually, very few are. There will always be enough people that believe whatever you tell them an dont bother if its right or wrong. This is how humans are. This is how we always been. Dont complain about the swamp, it wont go away and neither should it.
Check the description for linked sources. Also look at the channel's other videos. There is not a very easy way but usually all trustful creators have links to move material about the subject in their description. That does at least sort out a few videos presenting wrong information.
A lot misinformative videos also have highly edited/doctored thumbnails that do not appear in the video. Pay attention to if the info makes sense and see what channels they associate themselves with. Most of the good channels know each other and collaborate/cameo. Finding out the person who started the channel can also help by seeing their educational background. A lot of the reputable people have an undergrad science degree with further education in science communication or their field of choice. This isn't always true (Tom Scott has a linguistics degree for instance) Best of luck!
Use subscriptions, not algorithmic recommendations. Subscribe to channels that are cited or recommended by other channels. If something sounds unlikely, look it up
I think it might help if you check out more information on them and ask yourself a few questions. Like, who’s making this video? Is it possible they have other motives (like if a coal factory were to make a video about global warming or something)? What type of content are they producing? Does their evidence and stuff match up to what other professionals are saying? What types of sources are they using?
I remember years ago RUclips would fill every science video's recommended bar with hysterical pseudo-science videos. It was cringy looking through the list after (or while) watching a much more serious and researched video on space or geology or the ocean or physics, and I spent years refusing to click any of them. I distrusted their recommendations heavily because they were all _always_ bunk science. They've cleaned up their act a *lot* since then and props to them for the progress they've made, but clearly there's still work to do.
1:28 I mean it's pretty hard to prevent misinformation and not catch something else in the cross-heir. Often times when people try to get rid of misinformation it ends up just straight up censoring content whether it be truthful, good or otherwise. It's a very delicate balance and unfortunately that's just how the internet works.
Yeah, and then some people would end up growing paranoid of the censorship and think that the truth is being hidden from them. Maybe some sort of credibility rating system instead of a censorship system could work better? If not, better education on misinformation and how to deal with it seems like another solution.
The most half-as... half-butt way RUclips could at least start to solve this, us have channels be able to be marked as educational, with a strict policy and requirements they must pass. Even if RUclips doesn’t fact check after, and only does the initial “entry test”, that could help reduce the large number of cheaply made false videos, and by prioritising these “verified educational” channels, it could help users!
Unfortunately because of the way things work, there's no real alternative to reach large numbers of people. RUclips doesn't have a competitor, nor can one really crop up.
People love misinformation because it's more bizzare and potentially controversy-discussion. Bizzare facts make our world seems more colorful and amazing than it is. It seems to have an opposing effect on physics though. Maybe that's because physics laws are hard to grasp for lay people. Also I loved the penguins 🐧🐧🐧🐧
I used to watch a channel called the infographics show and for the longest time and never really had any major issues with their information, that was until they made a video talking about the sultana steamship disaster. I myself have actually heavily researched this topic and I was mindblown by all the errors they made, what pissed me off the most is that they said that the disaster happened because of "government corruption" which not only did they not justify in any way, it's not even true. At no point did government corruption play any part in the sinking of the sultana. After watching that trainwreck I proceeded to fact check pretty much every other video I've watched from them and I could not believe just how bad it was, sometimes it seems like they didn't even research the topic at all and just based them off other youtube videos.
There is a flaw with the youtube algorithm. It recommends what we already like. Do like science and educational content you get science and education content. You support conspirqc theories you get conspiracy theories.

Internet in general need to be tidied up from misleading informations but that might be too big of a task for now so RUclips is a good place to start.
Already "fighting misinformation" is being used as handy tool for fighting political opponents of oligarchs from Silicon Valley. I don't think that's a good idea to request what would be in practice more censorship.
Minute Earth: RUclips is misleading

That's the reason I always check for link to academic papers if I am checking some science based video.
There is a problem with how information is spreading on RUclips. Good information could be blocked by the algorithm ( or not shown at all), while fake-news is spreading.
Also there could be problem of the level of education of some creators ( or lack of morals).
How would you know what some people believe if they are silenced?
Sometimes i watch laughable stuff for fun.
Who decides between good and bad information? RUclips? They might not always know whats bad or good.
Some even turn to the bible to tell them XD
Many RUclips "educators" seem to be just high school/college students that's very enthusiastic about a field. Once money starts flowing in and they turn RUclips into a career, they have to keep pumping out videos for the money. All the channels hosted by Simon Whistler have the same (bad) research staff and Simon just read his script without understand what he is reading
@@diptoneelde836 It has been shown that the algorithm used to favor more radical videos, regardless of topic. As in, whatever you were watching, it would recommend you a similar video but more intense.
People are the problem. People need to, as a whole, do a better job at discerning facts from fiction using basic logic. Then, support (subscribe) to the more credible channels
I wonder which side of the fence Sam O'Nella Academy is on
The good side, he's just saying things that can only be showed with more grotesque stick figures.
I mean it's an entertainment channel first and foremost. He mostly talks about wacky stories, they're maybe not wrong but he's also not like an actual historian. Just take it as entertainment and don't base any wider beliefs on it and it should be fine. I also find him fun but I just remember that he's mainly about presenting a fun wacky story, not serious historical education.
Sam O'nella academy, Dovahhatty, and Overly Sarcastic Productions kinda fall in a category of historical re-interpretation.
Still people are looking for videos which talk about their own perspective. Everybody gets what they want and not what they need. Like flat earth or aliens...
0:37 the first comment is right though: the Atlanta ocean doesn't mix with the Pacific. In fact, it's not even made of water, but rather soil and skyscrapers and humans. The reason they don't mix is because Atlanta is in Georgia.
The Onion is another very informational channel on RUclips.
Completely serious and totally non-satirical.
They didn't use to be factual and informational, but the world has changed and they slowly start getting more and more videos turn from wrong to correct.

RUclips should really feature good videos more. Example: Kurzgesagt
RUclips features what people watch and share, as they sell more ads that way:)
I'm also a big, big! Fan of kurzgesagt, their illustrations are so accurate about hypothetical theorems, principle and formulas.🧡
That's a very low level channel compared to the ones recommended in this video
@@blacktimhoward4322 Are you sure? It's really good. The animations are accurate, the only complaint I have is the topics that they choose.
@@blacktimhoward4322 kurzgesagt probably has the highest production value out of all education-entertainment channels and the animation quality is only beaten by 3blue1brown and primer
The solution to speech you don't like is more speech. Having RUclips act as the gatekeeper to make sure that people only see what you consider the truth is incredibly dangerous. They already do enough censorship.

I agree 100% with this. Clickbait and misleading RUclips video titles and video photos for things that are science based. It really kicks up a lot of dust and makes it hard to sort out the right and wrong videos because the clickbait video will have just as much, or more, popularity as the more honest one.
Stupidity is contagious, and the first lie often wins.
Saying the first lie kinda implies everyone lies, is the last lie better?
"Common sense isn't that common"
True informational video:weeks to months to finish
Minuteearth:weeks to months
Brightside:one hour?!?!😱😱
So how do we differentiate between wel and non researched videos?
A tip, avoid videos that are churned out, like 1 per day. Cough, cough, bright side.
Neat, a JoJo reference at 2:25
I thought i was the only one who noticed , usually the comments would be flooded by jojo fans lol
I thought you meant JoJo the singer of "Leave (Get Out)" so I was very confused at first lol.
Now I have to see if Minute Earth has any videos about marine biology.
Needs more ambiguity on whether the hat is part of the hair or not.
1:25 *cough* _infographics show_ *cough*
1:28 I mean it's pretty hard to prevent misinformation and not catch something else in the cross-heir. Often times when people try to get rid of misinformation it ends up just straight up censoring content whether it be truthful, good or otherwise. It's a very delicate balance and unfortunately that's just how the internet works.
Yeah, and then some people would end up growing paranoid of the censorship and think that the truth is being hidden from them. Maybe some sort of credibility rating system instead of a censorship system could work better? If not, better education on misinformation and how to deal with it seems like another solution.
Are you joking? Other sites do it pretty well, like Wikipedia. RUclips has the resources for it.

Minuteearth is great. Keep up the hard work I appreciate it all thank you.
MinuteEarth is truly my favorite science based RUclips channel.
0:28 I found Brightside and also thx for showing Kurzgesagt.
