- Twenty-eight patrons, including a seven-month pregnant woman, became violently sick from food poisoning after eating at a New York restaurant. The incident, which left 12 people hospitalized, happened at Kumo Sushi and Steakhouse in Stony Brook, New York. The culprit of the food poisoning is believed to be rice that was cooked but not stored at a proper temperature. Inside Edition's Les Trent has more.
Whatever happened and whatever went wrong, that restaurant is in deep deep trouble

I’ve gotten food poisoning twice in my life and it’s genuinely a terrifying experience. And super gross feeling. I hope everyone was able to heal up :(
Same
Same. Twice. Both times it was obviously cross contamination involving chicken. Both times I wasn't the only one sick, as well.
You’re fine it can’t kill you as long as you don’t die
I’ve gotten it more times than I have fingers and toes
You be aight and so will those people
Yea I don't go to sushi restaurants much anymore. I got food poisoning twice and both times were from sushi restaurants (once it was actually from the pork, not the fish). Also a friend died this year from a sushi restaurant serving poisonous mushrooms.
So true, I thought my mom was dying when she got it, she lost so much weight in three days, but thankfully, we prayed for and with her and Lord Jesus Christ healed her. It was terrifying, but I'm so thankful that she as well as all of you were healed by Lord Jesus 💜🔥❤👏
About 5 years ago, I got violently ill after eating at a chain taco restaurant. I realized the food tasted off when I took a bite, and I stopped eating right away, but the damage was done. I had never been so sick in my life. Absolutely terrible. I couldn't eat solid foods for a week and it took me more than 2 weeks to start to feel normal again. I have never returned to that restaurant chain and never will. Food poisoning is no joke.

I'd say that restaurant can open whatever they want. But! How about spread the news about the restaurant and maybe just maybe can Boycott the Diner. That'll sure make the Diner out of business
Idk I feel like it's common to get food poisoning from restaurants, it takes one thing being stored wrong for it to cause someone to get sick. Whether it's the resurant fault or where they get the actual food
That’s so ridiculous. Food poisoning happens, unless a place is deemed to have tons of unsafe and gross practices there’s no reason why they should have to go out of business.
We wouldn't have any resturaunt anymore if we shut down every restuaunt that has had food poisoning incidents.
This is something that happens in a lot of places. I got food poisoning from eating bad chicken at a Logan’s Roadhouse. It happens. One simple mistake while cooking or not storing stuff properly can cause it.
When two or more people get sick at a restaurant, it's considered a foodborne outbreak, this is beyond that. Would never go there again.

They wouldn't have been allowed to reopen unless somebody already checked on them.
Just leave them be. If people get poisoned then they’ll stop spending their money there and the business will be forced to shut down. The free market always works better than government intervention.
Home cooking isn’t even safe. You could buy something with salmonella or not properly cook or wash your food
Lol. In order for them to reopen a health inspector has to approve it. So obviously one has already been there.
I used to work as a chef. I have seen a lot of nasty stuff go down in the kitchen. Cross contamination, lack of frequency of washing hands, lack of personal hygeine, improper food storage, etc. I also have the worst luck getting food poisoning from restaurants. It was most likely Bacillus cereus, a bacterial spore that is in dry rice. It can survive high temperatures. It's not a matter of cross-contamination but rather one of safe food storage.
I almost poisoned hundreds of people with fried rice once. I was a catering chef and I put all the rice in the walk in before letting it cool properly. So the inside stayed hot to long and it all spoiled. Luckily someone told me right away that the rice tasted off and I pulled it from the menu.

I had food poisoning in France after eating a 5 cheese pizza in Le Havre or or Caen, can't really remember this was in 2009 and got violently ill for 3 or 4 days. Couldn't hold down anything and it was a bummer because I spent those days in France suffering, then took the tunnel to London and started to get better the last days of my trip. I was 16 at the time visiting with some of my high school classmates and a best friend during a program from our school for 10 days.
This could be but the possibility of food poisoning is low. Although everyone's body is different all people will not become sick at the same time. And it usually talked 12 to 24 hours to get sick. Something else got into the food. Maybe a chemical or something....🤷🏾♀️
A few decades ago, where I worked (local hospital) as hospital maternal-child nurse, the staff planned a very nice baby shower- - for one of our staff (It was held at another nurses’s home). Everyone who could attend showed up and all had a very nice time - - UNTIL an hour or so after getting home. Just like these unfortunate people, severe food poisoning. Finally discovered that the large family-sized takeout chicken tried to kill us horribly!! Luckily the pregnant nurse had not eaten any of that chicken but the hostess of the party, her dog had had just a very small amount (had to be seen by a Veterinarian).
EDIT: That morning after, the day shift in the L & D unit had only one nurse - - the rest had food poisoning. The supervisor called me and knowing that I had it too, said that I had to come in to work. She reported that I would be there in 45 minutes - - BIG PROBLEM: I got a call asking about why I’m not there, then they heard me doing another bout of dry heaving!
You should have just put the phone on the floor next to the toilet. They'd have gotten the message 😅😅

Rice is one of the most overlooked foods for food safety, especially fried rice because it requires the use of old dried rice. Typically it should be made fresh earlier that day and put in the fridge to dry for later use. But cooked rice can be an easy carrier of food poisoning. A colony of bacteria B. cereus can double in size in just 30 minutes and can take just 30 minutes after ingestion to kick in.
never knew that about rice...its always meat like chicken we we taught about germs...i mean i had food poison before from bad eggs but never from rice

*Pregnant women should NEVER eat sushi or items at sushi restaurants!*
That is very common knowledge. I have been to so many sushi places and every time there is a distinct warning regarding the risks for pregnant women eating sushi. Certainly her OB/Gyn alerted her to that at some point.
Also even the woman doesn't order sushi or other raw food items, any bacterial contamination can be transferred to cooked food, in this case, the fried rice.
As a father I can confirm what you're saying. When the wife was pregnant, we couldn't go to all you can eat sushi because it's not safe for the baby or her. 😢

Bacillus cereus
I appreciate reading this and am telling my adult kids. It’s easy to get lazy after dinner and not put things in the fridge quickly enough. 😞
@@AmandaLovesOldFordsthat’s odd. Cause when I’ve made fried rice, I use rice that’s been cooked and cooled the same day. It just tastes better that way. I wouldn’t use room temp rice, but if it’s been safely stored in the fridge, i don’t see the harm, unless I know it’s been there for awhile.

The fact that the children didn't eat the rice reminds me of the time at camp my teacher got mad at me for not eating some lettuce and so only then I ate some and later we found out there was an announcement of a risk of E.coli outbreak in that lettuce
That's also the premise of Bridesmaids (the movie referenced here) where the one uptight bridesmaid refused to eat the meat at the restaurant they were attending and was the only one not to get sick. It's kind of good though b/c if you have sort of an A/B test of ppl who ate and didn't eat something, it's easier to pinpoint the cause.
What a boss baby bozo teacher.
And what happened to the fried rice? I mean at least explain to us what they did to it or what it was exposed to. This story told me nothing.
I googled the restaurant and it said the rice wasn’t cooled properly and sat at room temperature. This caused spores to form and become bacteria, which causes food poisoning.
The rice wasn't stored at a proper temperature
Might've been spoiled I guess. There's various ways for food to go bad. Must have been one ingredient that doesn't contaminate much else since the kids didn't seem to get sick.
Saw someone mention the possibility of cross contamination. Raw fish could be the culprit if there was cross contamination, or improper storage of the fried rice.
Rice has a large surface area, and if cooked then left out to cool down, it will harbour bacteria. No cross contamination necessary. You need to refrigerate it and not leave it sitting out.

I got food poisoning from a hibachi place once. First time I ever had food poisoning. Had no idea it was food poisoning until the next day when I told my friends (and when they said I looked awful). The reason why I didn’t know it was food poisoning was because I also had a headache from something else, and while it is usual for me to throw up from a migraine, a headache of this sort had never caused me to throw up, but I just assumed it was the first time. 1st mistake was eating at long john silvers
@@leslypaulina3210 With all due respect, my aunt gave me a $20 LJS gift card and I hadn’t eaten in almost two days and I had a hankering for any food and I had decided to get some food from there and I will admit I had made a mistake going there.
Sorry about that. Don't know what made you sick but my Mum never eats coleslaw from restaurants. She doesn't trust it. Problem is it could be anything. I'm even suspicious of the tomato sauce/ketchup.
@@meln4214 It had to have been the coleslaw and very possibly, the tartar sauce also. It was very soon afterwards I got my ass handed to me by the food poisoning. It got me super sick.
Seafood is such a Risky type of food that i could never imagine eating it at a place like long John silver’s
Stuff like this just happens even in the best kitchens. Stuff like green onions can carry nasty stuff that can get you sick even with cleaning them.
even if they somehow don’t get in trouble from this the restaurants reputation is ruined
No one is going to eat there if they got news of this. That includes everyone in my family...sharing this with everyone!
Steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again?! How about it shouldn’t have happened in the first place. It’s crazy that place is still open right now already
The restaurant is allow to reopen is mind boggling.🤯
Been living 25 years and glad to say ive never had food poisoning even after all the expired food ive eaten lol
I’m so glad it has never happened to you! Take a lesson from their experiences and stop eating expired food
Eating food you’v had in the pantry with an expired date on it is different then eating out at a restaurant where cross contamination and food prep is also a factor .
BAD RICE CAN KILL YOU. SUE THEM FOR EVERYTHING PRAYERS FOR THAT BABY AND MOM❤
Food poisoning usually doesn't come on that immediately. Something must have been seriously, seriously bad with the food
Sorry to hear about this one.
This is crazy. I've been there once before and it was great. I hope everyone's going to be okay.
Beware of the fried rice i guess
It could happen anywhere. Just takes one mistake, one untrained employee. I've had food poisoning once. Still eat at the place, just not the fish sandwich.
Fried rice is usually made with leftovers, makes sense.
Food poisoning while pregnant is NO JOKE!!! I was put in the hospital contraction’s wouldnt stop. they thought they were going to have to deliver my baby early 🤧🤧
We were always told not to eat fried rice in my asian community. We were told it was always old reused rice. Fried rice tastes amazing but my mom would never let us order it in any restaurant
It is supposed to be old rice. Even the finest restaurants use day old rice rather than fresh.
This happened to me once when I was like 9 after eating a rice dish the day after a blackout that left the fridge (where said rice was stored) without power. I ended up vomiting 4-5 times that night, as did everyone else who ate it.
I was always told it takes hours for food poisoning to kick in.
A restaurant like this shouldn’t be allowed to reopen unless they have large signs telling every prospective customer what happened. No one in their right mind would go there again, and whoever doesn’t care can take their food poisoning to go…
I’ve been sick and I’ve had food poisoning. Food poisoning is not as painful as an eardrum exploding but it is horribly excruciating. It lasted 17 days of nonstop. Constant coming out at both ends.
I hope your eardrum recovered.

Food poisoning is horrible. But on another note I don’t think it’s safe for pregnant mom to eat sushi or any uncooked food at all. I hope it won’t affect the baby in the tummy
What kid doesn't eat fried rice I wonder? My kiddo would have been all over it
Me. I hated fried rice as a child, but love it as an adult.
Somebody wasnt following food prep properly. Modt of the time its always the person preparing the food who is either ill or didnt wash their hands after going to the bathroom.
The rice was stored improperly
Never ever mess with rice that was cooked more than two days ago is my rule of thumb. It's impossible to tell my looking at it if it's bad or not, and can actually kill you if it's bad
Ugh ohh. Big lawsuit and possibly closing that restaurant down.😏
Sickening. What is the recourse for something like that? A complete refund? Payment of hospital bills? How about the pain and suffering and ruining of the event although you don’t get sick till after you get home.
This is so scary.
Wow. Scary. 😢
Wow, I was supposed to eat there last week but i canceled
I always dealt with constipation, but after getting food poisoning from a Hormel Completes meal, my GI has been regular ever since!
Hormel! It completes your digestion!
Dear God, nobody put me in charge of an ad campaign.

I would love to see you work on Bud Light. Can't make it any worse.😂
My friend owns this restaurant, I’ve eaten here so many times . I feel so bad man I hope everything works out for both parties
What kind of cuisine do they serve? The title was Sushi and Steakhouse which seems like an odd combination
@@almac9203 it’s hibachi so it’s mostly sushi , Japanese cuzine, chicken , steak all that good stuff . It’s amazing I love it
@@almac9203I won't eat anywhere that serves sushi. Discusting.
@@hogant.551why not?
@@SusanaCanales1 Because raw fish, no thanks. Not my kind of food.
Wow super sorry to hear this , shame on them I hope health department closed it.
I once ate a burrito from chain restaurant that my mom shared with me while I was at work. Ten minutes after I ate it, I must gotten food poisoning. Had to go home early, but my mom only got a very bad upset stomach.
When I was a medic my partner and I stopped for some Chinese food but we got called out for a call and we asked the restaurant to hold our food until we returned and we could pay for it. After the call we went back and got the left overs and paid for our food and several hours later I was extremely sick with vomiting and diarrhea and it lasted for several days. On my next shift we were taking a patient to the ER and I was in the back with the patient and the patient said that I looked worse then her and I felt worse. We went out of service so I could be treated at the same ER as the patient we took in and my blood pressure was in the 80’s. I received medication and IV fluids and sent home but it was horrific food poisoning. My partner also got sick but not as bad.
That restaurant should be shut completely
So glad none of the Children got sick 😟
Same thing happened with me after eating Wendy’s nuggets. Never eating Wendy’s again. It’s hard to ever go back to a place that poisoned you
