The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

when i was a young boy growing up, i absolutely loved jackie wilson, he became my mentor, and i copied his style of singing, with an operatic voice. by the way, jackie loved mario lanza, and he got his operatic voice from him. when jackie died, i was devastated, and took mario lanza as my mentor. i am now 79 years old, and really thank these great men for teaching me how to sing. god bless them both, and may they be happy in heaven, singing with the angels, for our lord. all the best, Louie Vaccaro, tenor, las vegas.

Back in the 50's I saw Jackie live at a travelling cavalcade of stars show. He was the first of 12 performers leading up to the headliner. He had to do 3 encores - nobody wanted him to stop singing. I don't remember most of the others - even the headliner. He was the greatest of all time.

This was one of several songs Jackie recorded that were based on classical and operatic melodies. "Alone At Last" is based on Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto #1. Earlier in 1960, Jackie scored the biggest hit of his career, "Night", based on an aria from the opera Samson & Delilah by Saint-Saens. Only an opera singer could handle these songs.

Jackie was out years before Elvis. His first recording was in late 1951. Elvis used to fly to Vegas in the 50s just to see Jackie with Billy Ward & The Dominoes. No doubt he borrowed a bit for his own stage presence and performance as well as vocally. Elvis called Jackie the greatest singer he ever heard and paid his medical bills after Jackie was institutionalized. Until Elvis died in 1977.
