I'm a Neil Sedaka fan, and I've loved this song since I first heard it on the radio in 1977 when I was in 10th grade. I really didn't know what love was then, but I knew that this was a beautiful, soothing and loving song, and that these two people Sedaka was singing about loved each other. I'm in my late 50's, and I'll never stop listening to this song. It makes me so happy and brings back memories of High School, which for me was a simpler, less stressful and happier time.
I was in the 12th grade when Alone At Last Came out on the radio stations. I think sentimental, romantic, and nostalgic people liked the song the best. I'm sentimental, so it was one of my favorites. Someone else wrote that this is one of Sedaka's lesser known tunes and he is right. Maybe perhaps the song was too maudlin, a step foot into muzak music. But that didn't stop me from enjoying the song every time it came on the radio. I had no girlfriend at the time but this song made me wish I did every time I listened to it. This was long before the Internet. All you had back then was the radio stations, 45 rpm records and LP album records.
If you were living in 1977 in places like Hawaii or on the West Coast, near the ocean, especially California, and, were a teenager or young adult, then this song was for you! It made all the better sense if you had a boyfriend or girlfriend and you were taking a drive together in the later evening or early nighttime, passing along the coast where you could see over the calm Pacific Ocean. If this song couldn't put you into a romantic mood then nothing would. Another poster said that this is one of Sedaka's lesser known tunes, and I think he's right. It hasn't stood the test of time although back in 1977 the song did get a fair amount of radio station play time. I think it was because Alone At Last was perhaps too romantic, a step into muzak music. But that didn't stop a sentimental person like me from enjoying the song every time it came on the radio. Remember, this was pre-Internet days. All you had was the radio stations and 45 rpm records and LP album records.
@PHOENIX Ahhh, at my age, you just made me feel sentimental, nostalgic, and romantic. Too bad I'm not a young man anymore. I'd go out and find myself a woman right now!
This is one of the "lesser known Sedaka tunes", but in terms of sheer beauty, and the use of bossa nova tempo. Well, what's not to love? The guy got it goin' on!!!
such a beautiful and seductive melody. I started looking around for other versions on youtube and found NONE. how is that possible? no other singers wanted a part of this song?
One of my favorite song, very alluring for lovers. The song's story was very romantic. The tone can be easily mimic I even got 100 score when i sing this in a Karaoke Bar. Fantastic video. Kindly tell us what's name of this Beach Resort - a Golden Sand and Blue Green Water... Thanks for sharing...
Kate Smith 😅 phew! Thank you for replying! Ritchie Fabulous’s comment that “Sedaka will be missed” got me nervous there, when I first read it! Had to look it up myself! Thanks for letting me know he’s still going strong on FB! I’ll have to check him out!
NEIL Sedaka is still very much.aroud cheering us up during the Pandemic with his initial concerts as well as performing in 3 concerts in NY State in Oct 2021.

@PHOENIX You have to remember the Stylistics and Spiral Staircase. You too would have thought the main singers were female.
