Galaxy Buds Pro Teardown: Two Steps Back

- Опубликовано: 7 фев 2025
- Samsung’s Galaxy Buds team has blown us away with their wireless earbud design over the last few years. There was a time not too long ago we didn’t think any wireless earbuds would be repairable. Samsung has proven that it's not only possible, but they make it look easy, and don’t even bother to mention it as a selling point!
Because of that, each new pair of Galaxy Buds that comes out piques our interest: the latest, the Buds Pro, especially calls our attention. Will this be the pair that ends the Galaxy Buds' repairable streak? Or, like the Buds Live before them, will they set a new record for bud repairability? Today, we find out.
We used the Pro Tech Toolkit to disassemble it!

PLEASE SHOW US THE DUAL DRIVERS !!! IT IS INCREDIBLE YOU STOPPED AT THE DRIVERS !!!
It is glued
Bro I just busted the case on the floor at work and the whole shell, motherboard, and battery popped out hanging by their respective ribbons. It literally broke apart on the ground... and your video helped me put it back together! GG!!!
I like how you've organize the parts at the end.
On one hand I feel like the repairability score should be a little higher. You can still non-destructively get inside both them and the case to make repairs. However on the other hand I feel they got what they deserve, because if you accept that the batteries in the buds are soldered on then you're priming yourself to accept these backwards steps in repairability because it's only a small change and everyone else does it anyway. If you don't push back against it then it just keeps on going. Next the battery in the charging case will be soldered in place, and you'll brush that off too for the same reasons. Everyone else does it, it's only a small change, and everything else is accessible and fine. Then next thing you know the screws are proprietary, and you brush it off because it's only a minor inconvenience to have to get a special driver. Next the battery will be attached to the wireless charging coil in such a way that they can't be separated without destroying the coil. So you'll need a new wireless charging coil every time you want to replace the battery that's soldered to the main board anyway. And that'll be brushed off because it's just a minor detail.
I don't think any company would be bold enough to try that last one, but you get the point. Compare that final product to the repairability of the originals and it's a night and day difference. All those little changes you brushed off because they were only small steps backward for repairability compounded into one big slap in the face of hoping to fix anything in the device, and now basically nothing in the device can be repaired. You can't allow yourself to be primed to accept these user-unfriendly changes to devices just because they're small. You'll just end up accepting another, and another, and another, and then you're left with something that resembles the airpods in terms of repairability and you're sitting there asking yourself how it got to that point. So in conclusion then, sure everything else is still accessible and repairable. But in my opinion they do deserve the big hit in their repairability score anyway, especially because their other products have proven that they are capable of producing good earbuds that are also repairable. There's no reason to solder the battery to the board. This isn't their first pair of earbuds. They are well aware that they can produce them without soldering the batteries in place.
Anyway, this post has gone on long enough. You get the point.
ive got dignity, i will not buy the buds pro. no one should. Environment is the only thing that needs to be urgently, as soon as right now, prioritized before anything else.
For me, recycling is also an important aspect
Well on the other hand though, there are barely any products outside of Samsung and Sony earbuds that even come close to even this decreased level of reparability... Still though I preferred the repairability on my OG IconX and then the Galaxy Buds over this.
The IconX I have is in a really bad shape and needs battery replacement on both earbuds and a driver replacement which simply isn't worth the money to fix, but I am extremely glad that I can extract the battery off the charging case effortlessly and transplant it to the original Galaxy Gear (yes they use the exact same battery, even though they are 4 years apart in release) and make that work flawlessly!
@@JayDee-b5u When soldering directly to batteries they use ultrasonic welds, not literal solder. This is difficult to separate and is dangerous to reconnect without a ultrasonic welder. Not a common tool people have, so I would still consider this bad.
Ok wtf so much komment Story!!! 😐😐😐
I'm taking apart my charging case after accidentally putting it through the laundry, and although this video was super helpful, I just love the part where the TOP of the case just magically disappears so he can remove the circuit board.
I wanted to see the drivers. :(
Get on the highway if you want to see the drivers
@@ytr3488🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for this!
My case stopped charging my buds overnight, case had full battery but buds were at 30%, think I dropped the case the day before, figured the case was needing a 'reset' since it was detected but not charging the buds.
This helped me out in opening the buds pro case and re-seating that ribbon did the trick!
I think you should have mentioned that it is IPx7 as compared to IPx2 in the previous Buds series. This could make a difference in the design and causing it to be tougher for repair.
Yeah so the ipx 7 does not work at all
please ifixit, do the wf-1000xm3
Too easy :-))
Yesss I have these
@@JoeGillian0 howwww
@@sayantantalukdar9883 there are already à video showing how tp replace batteries on WF-1000XM3 earbuds...and even on their case :)
This video saved me a lot of money. Thank you!
It's amazing what they're capable of putting in such a small unit. I own the beans and saw your video on that so I wanted to see if they have improved on the beans. Thanks
Would've loved for you to have mentioned how fragile the flex cable is on top of the soldering point. Bricked mine while trying to desolder, and I've repaired many electronic items in the past. 1/10 for repairability.
they didnt go all the way to the speaker. I was curious to see how their new 2 way speaker looks
one of the Samsung videos shows them (at a glance)
@@shachar2 Yea but in a CGI rendition. It's always cool to see them in person.
Please show us the dual driver section,
Wow, that's so cool! I like to see how you dissect them, Seems like so much fun, I want to put my hands on it too.
Hi Guys,
I have a pair of Buds Pro. I have dropped them down many times the case unfortunatelly. Since the last time the case stopped feedbacking the charging statuses / battery levels of buds.
Opening the chase, nothing happens regarding to the LEDs.
What could have happened?
(When I plug in the charger cable directly, the LED on the case works as we waited, but the buds state LED lighst one times with amber and goes off immediately.)
Is it a mechanical problem or other ...?
Last, but not least. Thank you for your professional videos.
Cool! now show me how to put that all on my tv remote so i can have the chirp find feature 😆
Anyone know anywhere to find the battery for the case mine won't hold charge
So the varta battery would fit? I can’t find the any oem replacements
I was also expecting the tweeter and the woofer Samsung boasted about!!
It can be repaired, but where can I find the parts to buy? Aliexpress I didn't find it there
Well i know that there is an 2 way speaker inside and also an subwoffer and also an twetter
Plz can you make video on One plus buds pro .
I hope they get on board with repairability and offer battery replacement
Replacing the battery is almost impossible now as new batteries does not come with the terminal legs that was welded
Anyone know where one can get replacement ear bud batteries for these? Or equivalents?
The ambient sound mode in my right bud is giving strange sounds ...I don't know what to do...
the screws on mine is impossible to remove. they screw it in so tights its ridiculous. The repairablility score in my case is 0
Is it true that theses earbuds have two transducer ? one for low freq. and other for high freq. ?
Samsung doesn't own up to their battery life so I feel this is a way to get you to upgrade sooner rather than later.
The lid of my case popped off, how do I put it back on?
My left ear bud suddenly stopped working, no volume. I've done the checks on the sound through wearables app, still not working. Do you have any suggestions, please. I dont want to have to buy any set just because L ear sounds has stopped. Please give some guidance
If the batteries can be found why is it so hard to unsolder/resolder them? Not ideal but totally doable
It isn’t hard for some, but for many people soldering is a big barrier to repair! Many DIY fixers don’t have access to a soldering iron, or are too scared to try it. That’s why we prefer the contact pins from the old buds.
That said, now that anyone can buy a cheap soldering iron from Amazon or their hardware store, soldering skills will likely become more common.
Its good that you can repair them ,but their aren't any replacementparts
THIS! I tried looking for the batteries the Buds Live use just for kicks and indeed they're not easy to source. THAT should be part of the repairability score. I mean what use is it if something is easy to repair when there's no parts!
Sad , wish they cold do a bit better on buds pro 2
but still its seems reparable
I've never considered repairing any Bluetooth headphones. My wife got mad at one point and broke a pair of mine, the base stopped making contact with one of the pair of the headphones.
I tried opening, couldn't open it all the time and tried to force it when smoke came out of the case. That's when I simply dropped it (was afraid it was going to explode in my hands) and later simply discarded it.
I might be willing to pay a few to repair a gadget or two down the line but it's not an option I know of or never heard of
Teardown of the freebuds pro!
Varta battery 😱 Is very good👍
These things are made to last about a couple years anyways so by the time they need some type of servicing most likely one has saved up some to get something new. Same is with phones.
Hi from Dominican Republic, I would like know if there's possibility to remove the battery or change for other one or it is definitely no possible to do it or change the battery for other more powerful?
How do you connect a Reserve part?
@iFixit Hi thanks! quick question...cannot spot the receiving coil on the earbud.... is it on an IC? thanks
I've got a faulty/defective pair... Gotta return and get a new pair :/
Nice video. But the question is...Where can i buy an OEM battery?)))
At the OEM battery store. Duh
Is there any information where to find the battery for the charging case? Ive been searching for awhile.
Did u figure it out?
More than likely the battery is soldered to help with better efficiency transferring power.
I likes your explanation bro super
Great video. I would have love to see thoses drivers though.
My buds case is not worrking help to fix it
Why does the sautering matter if the batteries are not available separately to begin with? Nobody wants to disassemble their earbuds just to remove the battery, and if there's no way to get a replacement, an easily removable battery does nothing for repairability.
How smartly they fit battery in a tilted way 👍
Plsss anyone help with this static noise when i turn on anc or transparency mode on buds pro. I spend so much money and this??
has anyone identified the imu on the buds pro?
Does anyone know why my left bud pro works if I throw em in the freezer for 20 mins? (In-ear-detection is broken)
Hi, i bought galaxy buds pro three days ago and yesterday i listen to music at home and i suddenly heard like wind noise and when i turn off music i can still hear that wind noise how can i fix this problem, please help
How to repair my galaxy buds pro because it's connecting even if I close it
Thanks. My batteries are very much dead so I will try to replace them.
In my mind, those ultra small batteries in the buds themselves won't ever need to be replaced.
Considering that almost no one uses them to the last minute of battery, but always charge them before that, the degradation won't be as high as smartphone battery.
Plus, they already last so long that for a medium usage person, running through a single charge of the bud's cell will take like 2 or 3 days. And when it eventually starts to degrade, frequent top ups are always warranted by the charging case.
I'm expecting that battery to last for at least 7 years and go up to 10 years of use.
A person will surely change them well before that period.
The case doesn't help that much saving the battery lifespan, It avoids the battery to drain into low levels but also keeps the battery charged at 100% not good for lithium batteries, and at full charge it leak rate higher. Users reports show us that it lasts about 18 mons with heavy usage (4 to 5 hours + a day), whereas average users might expect 3 years.
The batteries in both my buds died within 1 year!
Heavy use sony earbuds with 8 hours of battery to start ended up at about an hour in my right bud and about 2.5 in the left bud. Had them for 1 year. Battery replacement is a must for me.
I purchased my galaxy buds pro when they were released. I've been using them everyday for an average 7 hours a day. I use them specifically for work and for private phone calls. I don't work 7 days a week so I averaged it out to 7 hours 365 days a year since January 21 2021 when I received mine. It's getting close to 3 years since I purchased them and I can tell you both earbuds still work great, sound quality is amazing and the battery in each are working great. Now the case it started maxing out at 50% earlier this year and as of today the case doesn't charge at all, it's at 0%. Considering the earbuds were included for free when pre-ordering my s21 ultra Samsung gave me a great product. I am now trying to figure out what battery the case uses so I can replace it.
Sorry, but negativ voting because it is soldered? That ridiculous. Repair means repairing and not just clicking/ sticking things together. The main problem is where to get a working replacement battery in some years .
Funny, I thought the thumbnail was sushi and chopsticks.
Can anyone or your self show me how to repair the case if it's not charging the ear buds
my right my right earbud (galaxy buds 2 pro) after i cleaned by alcohol & a brush the mic not working and noice cancelation working but not clear i want to know How do I open the Galaxy buds 2 pro ?
????
I open for the first time and there are no screws to hold the battery !!
It seems very easy to solder
Companies who are anti-repair need to know their place in society. Once I have purchased the physical product, it IS my property and I CAN and WILL do as I please with it.
If you have tools and skills to open the buds you probably also have some soldering skills as well. It doesn't look that complicated and difficult to replace the battery. Somehow unrepairable AirPods 1 can have their batteries replaced (checkout REWA channel) even though you said it's impossible without their destruction. Both devices are so small it's difficult to make every component easily replaceable but it's definitely possible.
Also, the score isn't objective at all as you scored it based on the previous generation of buds.
Los micrófonos van a la vuelta
Batteries are smaller than Buds+
Buds+ were using CP1454 (ICR1454) but Buds Pro were using CP1254. 60 mAh vs 85 mAh Hmmm....
Teardown flydigi cyberfox t1 pls
It's unfortunate that the bids pro have an basically unrepairable battery. I really like my headphones and didn't see any foreseeable need to upgrade them.
If the battery does then there is only so much I can do.
He just showed you how to repair them
Apple Air Buds Max headphones, please?
I love my buds plus..
Given the fact that these are ipx 7 and also the fact that these come apart easily still I think they should've gotten a score of 4 instead. Soldering is easy to someone who's mechanically inclined but like and mechanical skill it takes years to master. So basically anyone who attempts a DIY repair like this will likely destroy the earbuds anyways unless they already have experience.
Oh well, they sound amazing. Much better than the buds live and plus
I wanted to see the drivers 😒
Fixable if you wana buy the whole speaker with the battery with it.
What happened to your website?
Day by the day, everything becoming smaller than before and the repairability score becoming less than ever. This teardown still had few screws, I believe in years to come these companies would assemble everything using super glue just so as you guys can't teardown it. ,😁😁😁
Next: Just a circuitboard covered in glue, without any housing...
I think they'll become obsolete in a few years of use and you'll want to buy new ones than to go and change the battery.
Why would they become obsolete? Do wired headphones also become obsolete?
@@electroplaque it's not that they're going to be obsolete, but the battery is just going to make them a pain to use and you're probably gonna wanna buy new ones. I have experience from 1st gen Airpods
The tiny batteries is what makes them go "obsolete", by ruining the battery life so you can't use them anymore. That's why it was so great you could replace it in previous versions. The rest of the components can be expected to last and not need replacement or repair.
Hmm, well that's unfortunate...
Teardown raycon earbuds now please
For the soldering it's not really that big of a deal I think for the average consumer they will just send them to a repair shop and a repair shop should have the tools necessary to replace the battery.. not to mention its not really easy to find replacements for any buds on the market
Google said you cant replace Pro buds battery. So you can?
I pretty much rely on subtitles or captions with some videos, and this video doesn't have them at this time.
Sorry about that! Subtitles should be available now.
I don't get that score
You could get inside the buds no problems
The case is a gold standard
And the battery comes off with the touch of a soldering iron
Should've been atleast a 7
Have you ever touched a soldering iron near a battery? If not go do it rn letme know how it goes
@@dalekman9999
As a matter of fact I have
I've made a bunch of phone batteries work extra.
I've repaired countless wireless headphones for friends and family
Heck one time I soldered a wire straight to a 18650 cell coz I didn't have a spot welder and nickel strips
Great video.
Their phones have slipped and become Apple-esque repairable. Easier than a 'I suck' phone but Samsung does not want to be simple. I suppose it's the Asian Phone cut-thoat market, haha.
I would root my Note 9 but at the moment, I like the ability to store all my debit/credit cards on it and if i DO root it, Knox removes the ability to do so. Samsung is MUCH more secure than iphones (simply because each phone is different, iphones are identical. Encrypted but identical) but no rooted/jailbroken phone can call itself secure and that is fair. Samsung is fantastic in that you can disassemble and replace batteries with no issues for the most part
This video teardown is very incomplete.
Why you're not showing how to remove the lid hinge?? That's the most difficult part and without it you can get the board out.😡
Because hes just a kid and he's clueless
I love this!
Irony is these galaxy buds pro are rated IPx7 and still can be disassembled so easily compared to airpods pro. And the airpods are not even water resistant. My friends airpods pro died just day after he bought them by getting wet in rain.
Can anybody in this channel that has successfully taken apart the buds and put them back together, help me get mine back together. I put the bud back together following the steps but it won't activate anymore.
Please I need help
ifixit, can you also measure pwm?
Well, Galaxy Buds Live is the best in terms of the clean and tidy assembling inside.
Music way too loud
Sir can u just please send a pair of samsung galaxy buds pro to me it will be 👍great
their batteries are why I never buy these earbuds. the lipo capacitors should be a good fit in these. tho they'd only last 1/5th as much time :|
tho with 8h of playtime as is, maybe 1-2h wouldn't be that bad if it meant they'll last forever?
I dunno that would actually leave a pretty bad first impression imo
2 hours is barely enough for a morning commute and not being able to use them after that would leave a bit of a sour taste
It's okay to be a lower score but how from 8 to 3 that isn't logically. Plis explain me
Why the background music?? Really
Coolio!
No tenéis ni puta idea poniendo las notas de reparabilidad macho... 😒👎
