I'm a huge fan and supporter of the Osmonds my whole life - since I was a kid and to this day. Putting that out there because I don't want what I have to say to sound negative. I'm 66yo, had a career in the music industry and have been surrounded by music and musicians for decades. I've always been in awe of musical talent, have none myself, but built a career as a music publisher in the 1980s, supporting and promoting the musical talent of others. I admire the career Donny and Marie have made for themselves since then. I can't help but wonder what happened to the other brothers? Why did they so easily give up the spotlight to support Donny and Marie? Even more than the older ones, why did Jimmy give it up to Donny, seemingly so easily? These are juicy, gossipy questions and probably more interesting to most people than the one that's bothering me the most. I have been around musicians my entire life - and I have studied music for most of my life. I'm fully aware that the phenomenon of magical musical ability exists. I also know, from a practical viewpoint, the incredible amount of work it takes to create music. I can see that 4 young brothers were able to sing in perfect harmony in the back of the car - that's called 'blood harmony'. But then, to be able to repeat it and go on to perform publicly, without any musical training, is a stretch. Don't get me wrong - I've seen the footage of the original, 4 young Osmond Brothers performing and they are incredible!!! I don't doubt their talent, I'd just love to know where it came from and, also, why it was so easy for them to give it up. it was obvious that when Donny - and even Jimmy - joined the act, the original 4 graciously and, even easily, took a back seat. I didn't follow their career from when Donny arrived at 5yo until Donny and I both were 13 and they exploded on the radio with "One Bad Apple". It was 1970 and the Osmond Brothers were nothing like what I saw on the Andy Williams show 5 years earlier. I was so young in 1965 - about 7yo, but I vaguely remembered them as being kids around my age that sang really well and also looked and acted like normal kids. Everything changed when they hit the scene with Donny clearly out front. They gave up their unique harmonic talent and put all their effort into promoting Donny as the star he was born to be. And, you know what, they got it right. To this day - they got it right! Seems to me that the brothers are happy and content to living the life they're living. Donny and Marie took on the burden of being in the public eye, but they both have handled it well and they both seem to thrive from it. Through it all, it appears that the family stands firm and together. There's no indication of any major conflicts. I'm sure there are some conflicts. I mean, I'm a part of a family, just like everyone else, so I know that there's always family conflicts. It's up to every one of us to be the best we can be and make the best life we can with what we have. In my opinion Donny, Marie and all the Osmonds are examples of doing that.
At the beginning the man says "there will never be another Osmond's". I don't think he counted on a 2nd generation of Osmonds because so many of the next generation are also singing. What a family.
@HOANANIULOA I assume you are referring to the documentary I have called Being the Osmonds? If so its part 2/5 starting at around 6:15. They talk about the regime of growing up in a strict household. IMO no way does that compare to Joe Jacksons abuse! If Donny see's it as a form of abuse thats his right, but they were not 'whupped' nor did they claim to be physically abused in the way I assume you are implying. The strongest word used is spanking. I got a spankings growing up but was not abused
I think they tough loved them but I also believe they cared for them too. I read some stuff about Alan's father's childhood that makes me believe he wasn't necessarily given as good of a childhood as you would believe he had so I factor that into comments about them as parents.
Father Osmond's dad died when he was a baby, and his two step-fathers treated him like a third-class citizen. Thank God that he joined the Army and got an idea of structure and discipline, and then found a woman who was willing to stand beside him. But mostly, thank God he decided that the circle would be broken when he raised the children.
Tom has also been divorced and remarried. Although I am not a Marie fan in that I'm no into Country music she does seem to be a lovely fun lady, but out there, So I've often wondered when seeing her with her brothers, especially Donny, if she acted the same around her husbands. Husbands are not brothers but I wonder if they felt like they were the 9th brother. I have no idea obviously but maybe that's what happens when you're the only girl in such a large family. They'll look after her though.
@HOANANIULOA Oh, forgot to say that the family gave a pretty good percentage of their earnings to their church. They refused to declare bankrupty because that would mean creditors may not be paid in full. Their conscience didn't allow them to do that. And shock horror that rich and famous people live in big houses and drive fancy cars. Who would have believed such a thing lol ;-) I don't think an Osmond/Jackson comarison is working in this instence, especially not on the abuse element.
@TroyBilt007 On the basis that I was not there I cant say it didnt happen but I think that when kids are told off by their parents spanked & maybe sent to their oom etc, its not abuse but discipline and thats all I imagine is happening during thieir childhood. I people should be careful what they assume. Assumptions are hurtful to those being talked about as actual accusations against loved ones. I think people are going OTT on an assumption. It's dangerous and harmful.
It is true that parents should be very careful with their children & not traumatize them. Apparently Joe Jackson was not very careful at all. He was a child beater.
i think the osmond:s became famous mainly because they could well have been the family living next door at a time when family were struggling and could barely afford a tv so to watch them on telly with your brother:sand sisters could well have made them more famous then the jackson 5 or 6 who i hardly ever saw and barely heard for that matter I was well into my teens when i heard odf the jackson but the same age as the osmond;S danny and MARIE ANYWAY olive hayes olive marie hayes
Taking nothing away from the talent and success of the Osmonds, I need to say this. I find it laughable and highly ignorant that people in this video can make the claim that they NEVER heard or saw any group like the Osmonds... or talk about their magnitude in pop music. They might have been around first, but their success came AFTER they revamped their style to sound like the Jackson 5. In fact, their first hit was written for the Jackson 5. They owe the J-5 a debt of gratitude.
I just watched a video where a guy was previewing 'One Bad Apple' and swearing up and down that he had NO clue who the Osmonds were, and that he grew up thinking the song was the Jackson 5. I could see that IF it were 1992, but this is 2020; google it!!!
I am guessing Donny probably just struggled with (from what I understand about his talking online maybe just feeling pushed into the life more than that he saw it as abuse)
Remember that Donny suffered from debilitating panic and anxiety attacks, which were completely misunderstood back in the 60s and 70s. There might be an underlying thread of resentment on his part, but deep down inside I think he appreciates it. At least his father prayed with him to find peace when an attack came on; I was told I was a hypochondriac and was threatened with being slapped silly if I didn't knock it off.

It has been discussed how much. All that has been proved was that Alan's father was a disciplinarian. I can't say that much about Michael. And if their father was so bad why did Donny's friend end up so screwed up he never appeared normal.

Joe beat the stuffing out of Tito for touching his guitar; Marlon was horribly abused for not being talented and being a bit slow on the uptake; Michael was abused because he fought back. I would rather have Joan Crawford for a mother than Joe Jackson for a father.
I don't think so. I am respectful of my parents and I never slept in a military bed. AND I don't have any recollections of having a "locker" for my stuff. I also never did anything in elementary school that would have been wrong e nough to have to report back to my parents. I don't want to call mom and pop osmond abusive but the fact remains that pop osmond didn't want to call himself "father osmond" because he was a respected father but because "you don't call God the FAther God the dad" if

Ya think? The 2nd Generation didn't start until the mid 80's when Alan's boys started singing as "The Osmonds, second generation".

Well, obviously, they worked it out and gave forgiveness because they remarried and got re-sealed in the Temple.
