I'm not much of a Strat guy per se but I own 5 MIMs and one American Standard. Not being a Strat guy, I honestly can't tell the difference between an MIM and MIA.
I bought a 2007 Hwy1 Strat about a year ago. My main reason was it's the only model with a nitro finish that wasn't IMHO insanely overpriced. I tried several Custom Shop Starts and didn't feel they justified their price tags. I swapped out the "Atomic humbucker" and "Hot Single Coil" pickups for Custom Shop 54s and I think the guitar is better sounding since.
I have a Highway 1 Strat '04. Never had any need for another strat, really. Brilliant playability and tone. I like the way the satin finish ages, it has a rustic feel to it, as you put it.
I love Highway One guitars, I have 2 Teles (05/07) and 2 Strats (02/04). Produced from 2002 to 2010 with a revamp in 2006 which offered jumbo frets, that big headstock on the Strats, which carried on to the American Special and Performers. 2002 - 05 HW-1 had Classic Series A3 pups while 2006 - 10 had overwound vintage style pups that were really hot and sound terrible, bit like Tex/Mex with no metal plate under the bridge pup! I had to take them off my 2007 Tele and I put in the superior Yosemite set. Series 1 also had acrylic paint while series 2 had nitro. The big headstock is a dealbreaker for me.
The Highway One Strat came stock with Hot Strat Alnico- 3 pickups. HSS version had an Atomic Humbucker in the bridge. Glad to see you’re back on your RUclips channel.
@@RSimusic No that was the American Special which was the successor to the Highway One in 2010. That had the Texas Specials and the upgraded Highway One in 2006+ had the Hot Strat Alnico- 3 pickups.
I’ve got a 2007 Highway One Telecaster in the honey blonde finish with a rosewood board that I picked up about 6 months and I love it. These guitars had a thin skin/satin nitro finish which isn’t a common thing on lower priced Fenders. The Highway ones are good guitars and they’re starting to go up in price on the used market. I’m lucky to have gotten my Tele for $600. I’ve come to two conclusions with regards to owning it. I should’ve picked up a telecaster years ago and I wish I knew about the Highway One series back in the day.
I turned my SSS Highway One into an HSS with a Burstbucker from my Epiphone. I've had it for 5 years now, it's my baby! I play more rock so the humbucker really works !!
I also deck the bridge on my Highway 1, after putting locking tuners, new saddles and tone rider pick-ups, this is the only strat i'll ever need. I rarely have to tune it and the nitro finish (apart from looking amazing) seems to let it breathe. My guitar tech is a strat guy and he has commented a couple of times about how much he likes it . This is coming from a man who has a 1962 strat in his collection.
Would love some talk about your rhythm playing, it's next level. Glad you're putting out more videos! Specifically the kind of thing happening at 0:38.
I have had my 07 HWY one since 07. She's been through hell, but still my go-to. I've upgraded the pickups to Fender jeck beck noiseless pups, locking tuners, and strap locks(all fender). She's a beast! Also, if you look at the serial behind the headstock. It should give you an idea of the year. Mine is Z7, so 2007.
7:35 most likely this is because of the higher output pickups compared to your CS one. You can lower the pickups and measure impedance and induction on your CS and Highway1 fenders. Fixed (or blocked) bridge may also give a little more "punch" as you say. Also, make sure you use the strings that work best for you.
Great video and and love both guitars but I just picked up a mint condition '06 HWY 1. The neck? Perfect and a bit wider at the nut than standard Strats....including my MIM and SRV model. The pots are 250k and pickups are Alnico 3 and bit hot. I've been playing for 32+ years and the value cannot be beat. Like you said, it stays in tune but extremely impressed with the tone in all pickup positions and more versatile than the SRV. It pairs really well with both my Tech 21 and Roland Blues Cube Artist and is a match made in heaven with both the SA Ventris and J.Rockett Blue Note. Medium profile, rosewood board with tight grain, resonant body and this will deliver Knopfler, Gilmour and SRV tones forever and more. One of the greatest runs by Fender imo.
Yeah Malmsteen was an absolute brute in the early 80s. Cocky and proud, but man he was the king of the hill. Glad to have you back man, I was waiting for new content ! :) Cheers
Thanks for the video! Personally I own for 10 years a 2005 Fender Stratocaster Highway One (first series with the classic headstock) in sunburst finish that I still like the first day. My guitar was upgraded by its former owner who put Texas Special pickups that make sound really great! It has more gain and it’s more powerful than normal standard series! I compared it with my teacher’s strat and it was so surprising. It feels great too and I don’t think I won’t sell my Strat one day because it’s my very first good electric guitar I own. If today I should buy a strat, I prefer to choose an used highway one than a new mexican made… So Highway One was a good series!
I deck my bridge too, and I still use it with the trem arm, but the springs are set so it doesn't move when bending strings so I get the hardtail-like string tension and resonance.
Love my highway one HSS. The hum-bucker makes it scream real nice. Jumbo frets make it play like butter. I’ve played a lot of American standards and custom shop strats and they just don’t play as smooth. At all.
Affordable or expensive; I've realized, with a decent set of pickups, & a great set up by a trusted Tech, a guitar can sound and feel outstanding Jack; I agree. My Strats' bridge is set up fixed, flush with the body, 5 springs. Also, I have a Brass Trem Block and Brass Claw on both my Strats. Same material as a trumpet, I can hear the lovely added tone, and way more sustain than my 3 Teles. Check it out. Brass Trem block and claw
I have a 2005 Fender Hihway one from the first series that Fender made. It is a Sun burst Stratocaster with a maple neck. I replaced the pickups with Custom '54 pickups from Fender. That's a significant improvement. Originally there were, I thought, Alnico 3 pickups in it.
Great guitar but the first series came a few years earlier equipped with the small original headstock and Alnico 2 pickups. The headstock changed to the '70s sometime during the '06 production.
As a Strat guy, the tones I preferred most were the dirty blues with the Duellist on the string singer side, and to my ears (headphones) the Highway One sounded fuller and more interesting which I’m thinking was due to the pickups. Never played Fat 60’s but I do not care at all for Fat 50’s. Good video.
The tone of your Highway One went into my soul. I hated when you stopped playing. Both sounded great. My ears preferred the Hwy 1 but you could hear you feel the Custom shop for yourself. For me the Highways sustain was its best feature.
Yeah i have the same highway one it has some thick alnico 3 pickup but texsas special was put later on american special… i changed them to 69 customshop pickups such a good guitar
I also own a Fender Highway One Stratocaster, it's the Queen of all my 18 guitars, and the best guitar in the world, I would never give it even for 1 million dollars ! ♥️😽
Great Playing as always, and I agree that it's about the feel. I play my USA Fender Strat the most, because of the satin neck feel and rosewood finger board. It makes me work for it, but I dig the bluesy n rock tones!
loved the video. fender american professional strat owner, happy but i didn't found THE one as i found LP guitar with my Gibson R8 cs. so I am looking and expecting to one day find the right custom shop strat for me!
I,d love to say the Highway strat edges it because I own one but sorry, the custom shop is in a different class,,the tone is gorgeous,,you instantly listen to the fantastic playing like your listening to a well recorded album .loved this video.
Jack, here's a tip: try using a Dunlop Prime Tone Jazz III XL 0.88mm pick with your Strat(s). You'll be amazed at the extra clarity and definition when playing that cross-picking stuff. It's not so good for rock lead, but for articulation and definition using clean tones, including funk rhythm guitar, it can't be beaten (I've tried dozens of picks and they all sound broadly similar for clean sounds until you swap to a PrimeTone Jazz III XL 0.88mm pick). Record yourself using a variety of picks and listen to the difference and judge for yourself. As an aside, I've learned that what we feel and hear whilst playing is often quite different to what we feel and hear when listening a day/week/month later without a guitar in our hands. Keep up the great work!
I bought a Highway one in '07, '08. Can't remember what pickups were in it but I know they weren't Texas Specials, because I swapped the stock pickups for Texas Specials.
The custom shop is definitely superior although I love the satin body of the highway one and three tone sunburst is always a winner for me. I have an elite sunburst Strat from 2016 with a rosewood board, which is my no. 1 "go to" guitar.
The USA Custom Shop 62 Reissue does it for me. The other one is a little softer, slightly compressed, sounding, which isn't a bad thing, but I prefer the immediacy of the 62 Reissue.
Personally I dont like playing strats but some of my hero's do and I am always in awe when they do what they do with them...jack you make a strat sound amazing
Highway one sounds really good but the custom shop sounds considerably better to my ears, as always a great performance on both but you sound more expressive on the custom shop as well. Enjoyed the video, keep them coming 😁
I have a hardtail American Standard Strat from 2001-2 and it is great. Waited years to get one but this was the first one I'd ever seen, it was like new and I traded my Les Paul Tribute for it even. I put locking Fender tuners on it and it improved drastically. Also changed the pick up covers and knobs so it matches with my Precision Bass. I've bought a Freeway 10 way switch and Pure tone jack to finish personalizing this guitar but wondering if I want to mod it that much since it sounds great and has the look I want with no real changes made and the original cosmetic parts as well as tuners ready to swap back in the case.
@@keithclark486 The instrument sings more purely and stays in tune a little better. The tuners on my Strat were nearly 20 years old and I think the age and the windings were causing it to slip. I think the higher gear ratio is less important than getting rid of the wraps around the posts. The wraps lead to inconsistencies, slippage and tension in the wrong places that the locking tuners all get rid of. They also make it a lot easier to change the strings and when you do everything is just as stable as before once you stretch and retune them a couple times.
@@robertobrien2903 Very good I own 29 guitars fenders and G&L's I've replaced All of them with locking tuners Also just bought a Gretch and am getting ready to do the same thing.

Highway Ones are steadily increasing in price, I have a lefty 2004 , small headstock, lower output pickups and medium frets, the resonance of this guitar is massive… wood? Finish, luck? Who knows but HW1s are desirable instruments and with CS prices in UK going stupid high a very affordable USA option.
It's the Jumbo frets that make this guitar stand out from the crowd ! There's enough meat on them that a level/ crown / polish will still give them years of playing.
Jack, I recommend you to upgrade your CS strat with Wudtone CP 50 S tremolo unit (54 mm strings spacing) and coresponding Highwood saddles..I did also install Villex jack plug in to add pasive midrange boost...and the discovery of a year 2020 - Ulbrick NRS system to vastly reduce 60s hum/buzz with NO change to the tone. Cheers!
Original 2nd gen Highway One PU outputs: neck and middle 9k (reverse polarity btw); Bridge 11k - all with alnico 3 magnets. To me you've defeated the object of what Fender aimed to achieve, which was really fat, darker sounding PUs, whilst the alnico 3s and greasebucket tone circuit cutting down the highs without adding any bass. Each to their own, but have left the original PUs in my 2007 (gives me something very different to all my other strats). Once you said you'd swapped the PUs out, I was gone from the vid, sorry (was pointing a student to it as another comparison from mine you see).
It's definitely the feel, but not just the feel of the neck, it's the feel of the guitar in general. It seems that your connection with the custom shop Strat might be just a little stronger, if I'm not mistaken.
Ive got a road worn 60's that I love to DEATH. Mainly a les paul guy such as yourself but damn, that strat is still the best ive heard. Yet to find one thats better.
Just bought my first Fender CS, 2020 heavy relic Limited with Dual mag II pickups. Any experience with these pickups Jack? Thnx and keep on playing man. You’re my inspiration. I hope one day I can play like you. A person has to set its goal, not!?
The price tag ensures you try to love the CS. Your subconscious must justify the price by telling you it sounds better. ~ Freud Also tone finish the new tonewood. Highway one is more alive and sounds much better. More you pay the less you get.
Jack, to me this is the first ever video of yours ( peach guitars or yours personal) where the sound is a bit undewhelmingly low without the punch and juice you usually have .
personally, i like more the custom shop one, got more midrange tones, the highway one its a little more brighter (se escribe asi brillante?). i preffer the custom shop, but highway one could be better whit funky stuff o pop music, i think
For years I only cared for the feel of a guitar. The sound was secondary, I always thought you can make most things sound good with pedals, amps etc. (and you can, sort of). But since a few years I notice that I gravitate to my best sounding guitars, even if others feel better or easier to play. No idea why, maybe because I'm at a point I'm listening more to what I play instead of concentrating on how "good/bad" I play? As long as the frets are level, I'm pretty happy. Can't stand fretbuzz. Btw I like the CS strat just a bit more. It seems to have "more" sound. Not louder, just "more". Probably harmonics?
Good move pulling the mid boost circuit out Think it works better w the noiseless pups in the EC strat Can't go wrong with the Fat 50s and 60s I guess your not a maple board guy You sounded good on the ones you demo's tho Oh by the way I like the CS better but both 😎 cool

Each to their own, but have left the original PUs in my 2007 (gives me something very different to all my other strats). Once you said you'd swapped the PUs out, I was gone from the vid, sorry (was pointing a student to it as another comparison from mine you see).
Here's the original marketing vid on the 2nd gen Highway Ones like you and I have: ruclips.net/video/JqSYDHNpAx8/видео.html
In 2007, I had the opportunity to buy a used Highway One in Sunburst for $450 at Guitar Center. I didn’t buy, don’t remember why, and I regret it.
It's definitely the feel, but not just the feel of the neck, it's the feel of the guitar in general. It seems that your connection with the custom shop Strat might be just a little stronger, if I'm not mistaken.
Do you write your demos or you were just improvising? Sounds really good.
Ive got a road worn 60's that I love to DEATH. Mainly a les paul guy such as yourself but damn, that strat is still the best ive heard. Yet to find one thats better.
Take the custom shop neck, and put it on that highway one body and definitely a win win
What did you do with Highway One stock pickups? I will buy them.
What’s the song at 10:45??
How is the wear on that highway one ? If I remember correctly those guitars had a nitro finish.
I’m on jack’s team in the fight against the yngwie haters lol😂🤘🎸
Highway one sounds warmer and more flexible, the Custom one has a more compact sound and that may make it easier to control, what do you think?
If someone played 100 strats someone would try to tell the difference in all 100 of them.❤
You don't need to remove the neck to learn the year of the guitar; just look at the serial number, which tells all.
Can I know the setting of Pickup hight in mm in the highway?
Thanks
Stratocaster Highway One , original pickup ?
I think the H1 was made half in Mexico, half in the US -- hence the name.
More meat on the bone on the 62 custom shop but maybe try those fat 60s in the Highway to satisfy curiousity?
I love the custom shop 😉
The custom shop just sounds more mature to me, or as you said, more like a vintage strat, and that’s my preference. Great playing, as always!
Just bought my first Fender CS, 2020 heavy relic Limited with Dual mag II pickups. Any experience with these pickups Jack? Thnx and keep on playing man. You’re my inspiration. I hope one day I can play like you. A person has to set its goal, not!?
I like the custom sound better
But does it have the jumbo frets??
The price tag ensures you try to love the CS. Your subconscious must justify the price by telling you it sounds better.

Also tone finish the new tonewood. Highway one is more alive and sounds much better. More you pay the less you get.
Jack, to me this is the first ever video of yours ( peach guitars or yours personal) where the sound is a bit undewhelmingly low without the punch and juice you usually have .
personally, i like more the custom shop one, got more midrange tones, the highway one its a little more brighter (se escribe asi brillante?). i preffer the custom shop, but highway one could be better whit funky stuff o pop music, i think
with funky stuff..
These are my two strats…. My cs has steel frets… best desision ever if ur used to destroying the pickups
Good move pulling the mid boost circuit out Think it works better w the noiseless pups in the EC strat Can't go wrong with the Fat 50s and 60s I guess your not a maple board guy You sounded good on the ones you demo's tho Oh by the way I like the CS better but both 😎 cool
Thanks Paul - I actually do really like maple board Strats, but haven’t found the one yet!
Don't forget Ritchie Blackmore mate
For the Money the Highway One is hard to Beat but the Custom Shop is hard to beat also, as the saying goes you get what you pay for
