Thank you Linda! I put in an eastern redbud 1.5 years ago and I need to do some pruning. . Your video was way more informative than some of the arborists videos on RUclips. You are a wealth of knowledge. I appreciate you!!! I watch you weekly and was so glad to find this from 5 years ago in your previous garden. Cheers!!! ♥
I just want you to know that I absolutely love your video and I love your red Bud Grove. You’ve inspired me. I bought two red bud trees yesterday and will be planting them and pruning them the way you are demonstrating. Thank you so much from Western Massachusetts. Hugs Pedro
That was a superior video and you are a fearless pruner. I happen to have a redbud that needs fearlessly pruned and when I prune it late spring I will watch this video again. Thank You!
I would like to plant one of these beautiful Red Bud trees in my garden, hoping it will cope with searing heat in summer and frost in winter 🤗. I also with your tuition made my first topiary. Very satisfying and as you said calming. I bought a few advanced boxwoods that have been shaped and as Monty Don from Englang said I am too old to wait ha ha. Thanks for your tutorials they are excellent. Tammy. Australia. Cheers.
I have watched this several times to help us trim and shape our redbuds and flowering crabapples. They are looking great and we are going out to do our annual shaping now. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your method, Linda. I’ve begun using your boxwood pruning tips from a month or two ago. What a difference! My landscape guy even commented on how good they look. I’ll use these tips on a new burgundy hearts redbud we planted, but also on two Jefferson American elms to encourage their natural vase shape. Have a great weekend ...it looks like OK is as windy as KS right now. Looking forward to cooler and calmer weather by Monday. Cheers!
Linda you got pretty strong legs and strong arms, I am so glad you are working on this red bud tree. I have been growing one myself and I am so proud to see it grow seeing that it started out a little tiny twig . I knew I was going to kill it but it is still alive and taller than me, and that is close to eight feet, I am so proud!!! Thank you so very much for your inspiration and experience. Your garden is soooooooooo beautiful!!!!!!!
Once I start pruning it is so hard to stop! I always see just one more that could be cut! It is so satisfying to change a plant so much so quickly. Usually it seems you are waiting and waiting for a plant to get bigger.
Learned a lot here -- I have a 6ft redbud and have been too focused on "topping" the canopy vs "tree pruning" it like she does. Awesome intro shot of the yard with the birds singing, love Linda's energy and stamina, this channel deserves to have many more subscribers!
I just boughy my 1st home. I have a total of 8 Japanese Maple Trees in my yard. I didnt know what they were a month ago. They are blooming beautifully. Thanks for the tip about the branch pointing down
I love your redbuds! I am planning on planting a few in my backyard either in the fall or next spring and I want to create the same arching canopy you have going on. It feels very cozy and secret garden-like. I love the trees with the brick.
Wow Linda, you really went for a strong Lion-Tail there !!! "“Lion’s tailing” is the practice of removing all of the interior branches and foliage of the tree, but leaving branch tips untouched during pruning. This process results in excessive end weight, which will lead to branch bowing and an unhealthy structure that is highly vulnerable to the strain placed on it by rain and wind. Because so much material is removed, it can also cause the tree to be more susceptible to sunburn and disease. Because interior branches are missing, the only place a lion’s-tailed tree can grow is at the tips, so branches will just get longer and more heavy at the ends."
Regine Skrydon yes, I agree with you. But I shorten when necessary. Also these aren’t very long lived in my area so I get the effect from these volunteers for as long as they last. It also fills in somewhat in the interior over the growing season. That said, you have a keen eye and are spot on. Thanks for commenting.
Regine Skrydon Thanks for sharing the info! Was thinking about doing this, but changed my mind. Did some research & found this. "Lion-tailing- Why it’s wrong and how to fix it By Logan Tree Experts | November 29, 2012 What is it? The over-pruning of a tree by removing the majority of the interior branches leaving only the terminal leaves (like the tuff of the lion’s tail.) Why is it wrong? reduces the trees food supply by removing a large percentage of the leaves used for photosynthesis the over pruning causes a stress reaction called “epicormic sprouting” , “water sprouts” or “suckers”, causing a flush of branches along the trunk and limbs. This leads to weak branch unions and poor overall structure. the long, leafless branches create a lever which when inflicted with wind, snow or ice are prone to breakage and splitting . What can be done? A tree can recover from lion-tailing if the sprouts are allowed to develop into branches and then reduced slightly and spaced along the branch. Call an Expert! A certified arborist will not recommend Lion-tailing and will prune trees for maximum health and safety according to ANSI standard."
Great video, thank you! I think mine has a new tree growing out of the base of my existing tree. Should i try to separate it and plant it somewhere else? Or just cut everything off the base?
I have a rising sun redbud and during a storm the trunk split. I’ve been trying to save it this past spring summer and it’s bounced back but shape of is not good. Lots of giant branches coming from base of tree where the trunk is whole. I’m thinking of doing some large pruning of all low hanging branches and see what happens come next spring.
I like the branches all there with just a bit of pruning. Thats why I got trees to have all the leaves and limbs. And the birds like to hop from branch to branch too.I guess to each there own. Beautiful yard though!
Would you happen to know the type of red bud this is? You’ve done such a beautiful job maintaining it, very inspiring! Hoping to get one this upcoming year 2022… Thank you happy holidays
Hi Linda. We just planted a 10 ft. (4 inch diameter 1 ft. from base) Eastern Redbud. We love these trees. Can I start trimming and pruning now after freshly planting it? Or would you wait for it to settle into new home, maybe next year start pruning?
I pruned my new redbud last year after watching your video a number of times. I want to keep it small so will keep do it again. What time of the year do you prune? I see one can do it in fall or in the spring. Is it easier to do when the leaves are on or off?
How old is the redbud you are pruning in your video? I am becoming a devoted follower, and I want to thank you for your consistently high quality content!
Hey I have got heart shaped i noticed u pruning in leave? I need to cut core top of trunk to lower height say 400mm plant is only knew from nursery total size now in height is 2.5 metres from base of roots i would like to create a shrub more so with opposite to u keeping all low branches is it best to prune main top when in leaf thank u
Don’t worry. I live in IL and do to change in weather they will turn yellow or brown at times and it could also mean it has heat stress. Not enough water too. Mine is turning brown since it hasn’t rained in a month.
Hi Linda! I have planted a Forest Pansy in 2018.. (it's about 7' now) It's now early August, would it be too late this year to remove the branches at the bottom to create this effect? Thanks!!
If I prune my redbud while it is leafed out it kills the whole limb that has been trimmed. How old will redbud trees reach. My oldest (about 35 years and all most 20 inches at the base) was broken and killed by the wind.
if you enjoy spending your life pruning then this is the tree for you! nice purple buds for 2 weeks then it grows faster than weeds, the leaves are so heavy it makes all the branches droop. Prune it and you'll be doing it again 10 days later. Its a big mess! I prune mine constantly and besides the purple bloom in the spring, it doesnt offer anything special. Plant a christmas tree. Mine will be meeting Mr Stihl in April. Woo Hoo! Nice video by the way if you're into the everlasting redbud pruning.
if you prune it correctly, for the health and beauty of the tree (not like in this video) it doesn't require all that much pruning; and it's still a gorgeous tree when it's not in bloom. (again, when it's pruned properly -so there are many more leaves left on it) obviously, i don't think you should cut it down.
@@coelacanth9821 i dont know where you live, but here in northeast this tree needs pruning every 3 weeks if you plan on keeping it a manageable size. Ive had it in my yard for 14 years so i dont think i am making it up. Whats your address? I will ship you the buds when i drop it this weekend. Haha
Thank you, ma’m. One thing, could you edit out the ill humored comment about seeing your rear end? That way I can show this to my step son and other Christians like myself can watch this video without encountering that unwanted thought. I love these trees. I want dozens of them in my yard. They are so beautiful in the spring time.
Unless you have concrete or metal barrier bamboo can become very invasive. Back when it was first catching on I was paid to plant a lot of bamboo. Everyone was told about bamboos invasion tendencies. Over the past few years I've been paid a Lot to remove it front the neighbors yard at first homeowner expense. Also to remove from original landscape.
To many people let redbuds go. They end up growing into a bush that is like and uncared for shrub. A tree you can't walk around without possible eye damage is either young, mismanaged or s shrub.

If boxwood stands the winter well then eastern redbud will do great.

Love your gardens. When do i trim the redbuds so they do not grow crazy branches?
is it possible to reduce a medium sized redbud down to one trunk?
Absolutely love following your videos, what is the lattice on the roof used for?
Climbing rose was once attached :-)
Thanks for the info. Could this be done in June?
Yes but you might want to be a little bit more conservative
I love the look of the branches. Once the leaves are removed from along the branches...do they grow back immediately?
Not right away! Well worth the effort:)
Linda, I love your yard and your videos! You are an inspiration! I want to plant a red wood, what type are yours? They are gorgeous!
Common Eastern redbuds!

Christopher Darling maybe light pruning but let it have a chance to settle in.

So a redbud tree does not compensate by growing those skinny straight up waterspout things?
Nope:)

When is the best time to prune redbuds? I'm in zone 6b and my redbud is low and needs lifting
I am wondering the same thing!!
What is the vine climbing on the brick ?
The only pruning I do is crossing branches.
How old is the redbud you are pruning in your video?
