Summer Camp Sexual Abuse of Kids Is an Ongoing Problem

  • Millions of kids head off to sleepaway camp each year, but how safe are they? At Camp La Junta in Texas, an elite boys camp that has been around for over 90 years, a boy said he was touched inappropriately by a 20-year-old counselor in 2009. Crime Stoppers of Houston says they found over 1,000 victims of sexual assault at other camps across the U.S. over the last 10 to 15 years. An Inside Edition investigation uncovered a slew of counselors who were found guilty of sexual misconduct at camps across the U.S.

Right? You think of all the adults around kids without their parents, there's a good chance one of them will be a creep, in either this way or another. Just take em to the water park and cinemas over summer and they'll have just as much fun and you can make sure this won't happen.

I just got back from working at one of the best summer camps I’ve ever been to. I went there as a kid for one week ten years ago and had the best time, and it’s finally closing down due to financial reasons. At the beginning, everyone was in tears during our staff training because we went over real cases of camp counselors abusing children, how to watch out for it, and report it if a fellow counselor might be doing it or getting ready to abuse a child or anyone for that matter. As a camp counselor, and a victim of abuse, this disgusts me to my core that 1. People would do this to anyone, child or not.. and 2. That people like this ruin the name of camp counselors everywhere.
We made jokes all summer like “is this la junta?” When we had something that looked remotely nice, because it was the “fancy camp” and we didn’t have the money to stay open. And now I’m just disgusted that we held our neighbors so high on a pedestal.

Sleepaway camp is just like school, just farther. Parents need to do drivebys, wellness calls, get to know staff and do surprise visits. Also set up a camera that even kids aren't aware of. Been working with kids (0- 21) for years and I clean on the side: I always act as if being recorded because that's really how I behave all the time, I give people my fingerprint clearance (which I keep updated) and I'm never 'caught' because I 'm doing my job and not doing anything I shouldn't be doing on work time. I take trust very seriously, especially when it comes to people's homes, pets and kids. Also, as a mandated reporter (and just because it's the right thing to do), if you go to supervision and they do nothing, then go higher.
