Child Labor in New York Exposed in Undercover Investigation

  • An Inside Edition hidden camera investigation found children as young as 9 working in a factory in Cambridge, N.Y. They preach peace and love, but there is another side to the members of a commune in upstate New York. The children were packaging high-end lotions and skin cream for brands like Acure and Savannah Bee that are sold at well-known chain stores. At Inside Edition's request, Sarah Williams returned to 12 Tribes, which she left eight years ago. #InsideEdition

    It's definitely a grey area. I grew up in this cult and worked for them as an underage child. It was not the worst experience of my life and I didn't find the work itself traumatizing. The adults work for free and expect/assume children should do the same. But the group repeatedly refuses to obey the laws of the societies they live in and benefit from, so I don't feel incredibly bad for them getting caught either.

      My father grew was born in 1931. His butt was up at 5AM to do chores before school, then after school more chores. Now I'm not condoning excessive use of bamboo rods, but it sounds a damn sight better than the razor strap my grandfather used on my Dad. I see nothing wrong with the labor in this video. The factory work seems pretty light and the farm work is no different than any number of family farms in the world. The legality is an issue that needs to be addressed though, whether the work is acceptable for a child or not.
      The corporal punishment... well, truthfully, I support corporal punishment if done properly. I think that issue may be on a household by household basis as to whether it constitutes abuse. If I told a group of people how my father disciplined me as a kid, there would likely be some that said I was abused, and I'd tell them that I was not. My father could be rough. He actually backhanded me in the face full force with with his fist one time when I was 14 for something legitimately minor, but that one time mistake he made does not even remotely resemble the true horror stories of child abuse I have heard of in my lifetime. So without a fuller picture of daily discipline in the 12 Tribes, I don't feel I'm in a position to make an informed sweeping judgement.

      What kind of work was it? Do they have children making soaps? That's super dangerous.

    • @zacfubar1
      @zacfubar1 2 года назад +5

      @@blueturtle3623 Yeah they had kids working in that soap factory which is at least theoretically dangerous. They also have teenagers out doing construction jobs, which is probably even more dangerous. There's not much that can be done about it though. The U.S. tends to turn a blind eye to that stuff. Even though it's technically illegal, state governments usually take a don't-ask-don't-tell approach.

      But more often than not they shouldn't work unless they can handle the added stress and still have good grades. Their McDonald's job won't get them in a good college so their obligation is to study and at that age working is a privilege.

I see it as good experience and it made a good strong connection with my father. I help do cooking a kitchen with my mother too. Right now I'm 30 years and I can grow my own food in spring and summer seasons, and I cook really good meals. And all that made me good decent person. I understand this is wrong and screwed up for a major company to exploit cheap labor with these young kids and then they pocket all the profit.. At the same time its ashame there isnt a way a legit organization couldn't open a business with children doing light and fair work that suits their age and body limitations. This would help them learn and instills a good work ethic in them along with responsibility for when they get older. I remember years ago when i was 14-15 I worked at a family owned campground and it was fun and I learned alot about work ehtic and I also learned that money dont grow on trees. And i consider myself a 90's kìd, they were my teenage years .. It seems like kids today dont like to do anything physical or any type of dirty work.

The kids seem to know what it takes to survive unlike majority of u Americans that was born with silver spoon in ur mouth. I don't necessarily see this as a problem. If you have a family business making say, candles and you have a five year old who wants to help make candles at home, what's the problem? They're not necessarily being forced or otherwise coerced into doing it. Or, what if it's a family farm? Kids work all the time there and it's literally business as usual.
    When I was younger, I wished I could work and earn a wage as a young child. As soon as I turned 15 and was able to get a work permit, I worked and made money. I'd have worked at a 1040 wage job at an even younger age if it was legal.
    Now, in terms of the spanking, I personally draw the line there. It depends on the severity of it, of course, but personally, I don't advocate it even though what I see in this video is nothing compared to my own personal experience.
