I grew up in a Grand National and thankfully still own it. My father bought it new in 86 and when he passed in 2011 my brother and I inherited it. This car is my single most favorite possession besides my kids! Awesome to see y’all showing such a special car some love!

I have an GNX with plastic still on the seats. My dad passed away last year and passed it to me. Because of this video, I'm finally gonna start it up tomorrow and go for a cruise(if it stops raining).

@@NineteenEighty8 Cool. I also have a 440-6. 71 GTX. That low of miles on a GNX....cars are meant to be driven.....but.....check auctions and see what low mile GNX's are going for before driving that one around. Big money.
I do believe this is the most comfortable I’ve seen Ryan on camera. He’s actually chatty. Good to his confidence climbing. He’s definitely earned it💪

These shop talk style videos are among my favorite. It's just cool hearing everyone laughing and talking, seeing everyone relaxed and just enjoying what they do is great..then videos of actually talking about things they're trying to improve on the race cars and testing are right up there too..hell,all the videos are great period!!!!
In 1987 they also had the GNX version on the grand National. It was factory modified. And straight off the floor it was the quickest factory car made. Even quicker than the corvette. It’s my dream car, but it’s always be a dream. Awesome car Ryan!
Love those 87 granny's...that one looks super clean...my pops bought 1 back in 87 ..he since passed and my brother now has it rotting away in his garage in florida..ive tired many times to buy it from him but he refuses to let it go
Buick rated them at 245 horsepower. They were easy to modify at that time. I paid $18,000 for one, brand new, right out the dealer door. Kenne Bell chip, test pipe exhaust, cold ram air induction, and it would make you smile every time.

I was driving a white T-type when I saw the Grand National on a Buick car lot. The t-type doesn't have an intercooler for the turbo making 25 less horsepower.
Both cars are awesome.
@@maskedmarauder3278 The T-Type 1986 Regal Turbo, and the Turbo T 1987 Regal both had the same drivetrains as the Grand National.
My 87 GN was built by the sound tech for Pink Floyd. It made 550hp at the wheels. 28psi of boost and methanol squirt. Thing felt like the Gravitron. Miss my Natty
I had one in 89 cheeper and slower then a fox body, but they did work good for a V6. Turbo cars been around for years not first Turbo car trans am had one in the 70s amd many other cars before them. Not good when so called car guys don't know cars. Call race cars street cars. I had mid 10s 1/4 mil fox body in the 80s still had air ps pb c c PW. I dove to work 30 miles each way every day. That's a street car. Should come to Canada some time to street race but we do real shit not this 18 mil start stop. Here it's 1/4 mil on real streets. Not closed street prep like a track.

When I was 17 I worked at Hypertech in Memphis TN. I used to wash the owners cars and I will never forget going to one of his warehouses and seeing all of his Grand nationals. He had to have had 20-30 of them. I fell in love with them that day. That was in 97’ he had some with 0 miles to ones he drove on the weekends.
Buicks are known for the hood light staying on when the hood is closed and killing the battery. that's why the original owner had that light unplugged. you may want to keep that unplugged. beautiful car welcome to the club!!!!
The logo is a turbo but shaped like a 6. I always thought it meant 'Turbo 6' because the engine is a V6. The 70 GS 455 Stage 1 and the 87 GN are my two favorite cars.
I bought my 86 last year, I still walk into the garage and grin. Can’t believe I have a GN 😊! Life is short fellas, get those things that make you happy while you can because tomorrow is not promised.
That is one of my favorite cars too! I had an 83 regal, that my dad and I put a Buick big block 455 in, always wanted one of those!

The emblem means Turbo and it’s a 6 cylinder. My husband had one back in the day and regrets selling it. He’s been looking for one for a few years now. You should’ve heard him the entire time we watched the video 😂 he was commenting back in agreement to things you said and was shocked you got the HOLY GRAIL of deals!!! His use to run 11’s. Enjoy!

I have seen a Ford Model T still in the original shipping box with the rust prevention treatment still on the metal. Amazing car! I have seen pictures of US Army Jeeps in the original crates before shipping off to war. Nothing surprises me anymore with automobiles.
@@Irish_For_Life1842 I only know of two similar stories like that. A ‘71 hemi cuda sitting in an old 76 gas station on the reservation where I grew up. The kids dad bought it new, he snuck it out for a joy ride and blew the tranny. 4 speed, hemi, plum crazy with white interior. It still sitting to this day with a blown trans. Not new but I’d guess it has less than a thousand miles. The other is a first year NSX, my old neighbor in Seattle bought it new and parked it. Not a muscle car but they were impressive at the time for price and performance. Still sitting to this day. Somebody’s gotta do it

One of my favorite true car stories involved a Superbird (could be Daytona?). The owner of the car had it for several years and the headers wore out. He placed an order for a replacement set. He went to put them in the car and they weren't even close. We are not talking having to put a small dent for clearance. There was no hope of getting them on. He double checks his order information and the parts box. It all looked OK. He contacts the header company and they send another set out, and another set and another set. Thoroughly frustrated he looked into his VIN information over and researched the vehicle's history. It turns out this was an ever rarer bird than he thought. MOPAR had made two special Superbirds. One went to the Westcoast and one to the Eastcoast to drag race. The cars showed us with the center of gravity. The main centerline left 48% weight on the front and 52% on the back. NHRA knew they had to be illegal and tore them down at every event and could find nothing and had to allow them to race. His car was one of these two. Both were believed lost forever until this discovery!

Congratulations on your purchase. I had an 86 for 22 years but was forced to sell it in 08 due to the economy crunch. Had green stripe 45lb injectors, prom pac system (held 4 eprom chips), 2.5" duel stainless exhaust, ram air front spoiler, double pumper in the tank, off road pipe with dump cap to replace cat converter, Dennis Kirbin instrument cluster with all VDO gauges and spedo that went up to 160mph and 3 security systems on it. I would recommend eliminating the vent tube that goes from the front of passenger side valve cover to the turbo bell.
just put a K&N breather in the valve cover and put a bell housing on that eliminates the tub input. What happens is the turbo will suck in oil from the valve cover causing oil to get into the turbo and heat from the turbo will cause burn onto the turbo shaft slowing down the turbo speed. Check and see if yours has any missing body bushings. GM eliminated some of them for cost savings in 87. There are some other electronic tricks that can be done. Message me if you want to know more. Plus I do have a new set of heads with a special grind, still have the factory grey plastic valve covers on them. My car never gave me a reason to tear it apart and install them.
I grew up with Gbodies. Still have one. My dads best friend had an 87 Ttype since new so I got to grow up with that as well. Few light mods on a cool night it went 12.9s, but was typically a bottom 13 car.

Have always loved the Grand Nationals. Awesome Ryan. Love all the cars you have. I was born in 1960. So all the muscle cars from the late 60's on up to this era have always been my favorites. This car is also on my bucket list. Some Day!!!

I remember seeing a couple of these cars at BIR back in the early 90’s. It was so funny seeing them getting up to do their burnout and all you heard was a small whistle and see the tires smoke up. You had all these other cars that were running 14’s and 13’s with open headers loud as hell. Then these cars would pull up, they’d run faster and you couldn’t barely hear them. Lol. Beautiful cars.
My neighbour bought one brand new just like yours back in the day I loved it then and even more now I knew he had a great investment and a car destined to have its mark in history a very collectible instant classic.
Beautiful car. Good video! I owned an '86 GN in 1999. Bolted on a NOS system, destroyed the trans. the same night. Loved the look of the car, but I just never thought it was quick. Availability is scarce and prices are crazy.

Wow what a first car! I bough my first car as a HS senior back in 1973 after working after school and saving every Penney for like 4 years. I bought a mint 1970 Mach 1 Mustang. Still miss that car.

My favorite car. Kicking myself in the ass for not getting one back in the early 00's when they were cheap. Came up on 3rd and 4th gen F-body's, foxbody mustangs, and Thunderbird SC's and SHO's. Just turned 40 last year.
1988 I was in 8th grade and my parents were going to dealers trying to buy one of these. I was so excited. The dealers would not budge on the price because of them being special. They ended up buying a Buick Regal. I was pretty disappointed, but now that I'm an adult and parent I understand the financial decision! But almost!!

I worked at a Buick dealership when these cars came out . I've always wanted to own one after driving a brand new one . Now they are almost unattainable I'm so jealous of you lol congrats .
My buddies father had a 1987 T Type and that was a quick car back in the day. We had lots of fun showing the Buicks tail light to many Mustangs and Camaros.
Wasn’t the T-Type essentially the same car but with “Radial Tuned Suspension” (or something just a bit cushy)?
As a GN owner, I welcome y'all to the family!! I fully believe in folks doing what they want with their cars, but I'd be lying if I said that cutting this one wouldn't hurt. I've modded mine and love it. I always make sure that I keep it streetable. I love driving it. Once again, welcome and enjoy.

Dont know where Ryan got his information from, but the left over motors did go to Pontiac for the Turbo TAs. They weren't detuned for Pontiac. 1987 was the last year for the Grand National. Pontiac used them in the 1989 20th anniversary TAs. 2 years after the sales on the Grand National. No way they could hurt the sales after the fact. It was the only year of production that Pontiac used a 6 cylinder in the Trans Am. Buick also put that motor in another car to. It was a sleeper car. Buick Regal T-type. They were all produced in the color grey with no Grand National badging at all. They may have been detuned for those cars, seeing how they were produced the same year as the Grand National. Nice car to. Always wanted one of those.
Gotta love these cars. 300+ at the crank was crazy back then. The foxbodys and irocs of the same year were like 210. And I’m pretty sure the 210/215 was at motor. I only remember one these in person back in the day was a guy used go local drag strip and he ran mid to high 12 1/4s cause everyone paid attention to that from a v6 when people were running 11/12s with big blocks

Loved these cars I graduated in 1987 and you couldn't find them at the dealerships unless they were 25k or more. They 245 h 350 t stock. Can you imagine what you can do if you put a bigger turbo on it and add ons to make it faster. It was already the fastest production car in 1987.

My boy has an 87 GN we changed the 3.8 to a 4.1 aluminum heads big injectors 80mm turbo big waste gate n intercooler n fuel pumps. The car is stock suspension full interior n fast as hell. They are great cars good luck n enjoy!!!
My first street race was in a tubbed 68 Camaro, when those turbos spooled it left us like sitting still..👍👍👍👍🍻

I had one several years ago and had a real nice gauge package that was made for the dash and it looked like it came from the factory like that.
I was a technician at a Buick dealership in the 80s, My wife and I purchased our 86 GN for dealer cost still have it, only modifications a chip and k&n open air filter has 39k still looks as good as it did the day we bought it home.

Waiting to see dyno results . The 87 GN was one of the 80s cars underrated from the factory . In reality it was close to 300 at crank .
In 1987 ASC McLaren converted 547 Grand Nationals to the GNX specification. Every car was put on a chassis dyno before and after the conversion. Stock GNs would put down anywhere from 240 up to 290 RWHP. This put engine flywheel HP anywhere from 290-360 HP depending on the car. When the 1986-87 GNs arrived on the scene back in the day they got a wide variance in drag strip performance in the magazines; a lot of it depended on air temps. One of the 'secret weapons' the Grand National had, was its incredible ability to seemingly gain 30-50 HP instantly when the atmospheric temps turned cold in the Fall and early Spring. Not only would this put cold air into the engine but would also chill the factory air to air intercooler, yielding tremendous stock factory performance. This was shown to astounding effect in the very first magazine drag testing of the 1986 GN. In April/86 Car & Driver got a bone stock '86 GN on stock tires to run a 13.9 @ 99 mph which set the entire automotive world on its' ear. And all of that out of a V6 in a 2-door sedan.
Great car. Congrats ! My friend had one brand new. Art Carr kit in the trans and an adjustable waste gate back then were 2 simple mods and that car would scream.
The Fireball Grand National, an equivalent to Lingenfelter, Callaway , Hennessey twist of that era
A must do project, nod to the original engineers as to how far they might have gone with the resources of today.

Back in the 80's a young guy that worked in a fab shop where I was at the time bought a Grand National brand new. He carried on about how bad the car was to the point we were tired of hearing about it. My coworker (Eddie Tanner) bought and restored old vehicle's on the side at home. Eddie drove a old 304 V8 4 speed CJ 5 Jeep to work the following Friday. We all left to cash our paychecks at lunchtime and by chance we ended up side by side at a traffic light with the young Grand National guy. Eddie told the young man to hit it when the light changed. I swear that old CJ 5 went air born when Eddie popped the clutch. I was holding on to the grab bar (NO SEAT BELT'S) and saw the highway through the rusted out floorboard then looked up to see the speedometer buried. I turned my head looking back and we left the Grand National like it was stuck in the mud. I then proceeded to yelling "back out of it Eddie you got him"!!!!
Just thought I'd share that with you guy's. They are nice cars but avoid those old V8 Jeeps, so you can keep your chin up. LOL
Great find, MAKE IT YOURS Before the GNX Buick made a Regal T-Type in 1982 with a turbo. That's all I know except I had one and loved it as a sport boat with some power. Have fun

The Grand national is one of my absolute favorite vehicles
You know....for years I would drive into car shows, DQ, etc., with mine and the muscle car guys (of which I am one of and own too) would just turn their nose up at my car! Fast forward to today and whenever I take it out, I get thumbs up all the time. It's parked next to my ultra rare 71 440-6 GTX. Whenever my garage door is open and some younger guys walk by or drive by, they always are way more interested in the GN. I just laugh.

1980 Pontiac had a turbo trans am. That’s the first production turbo car I remember. Imagine if they would’ve got that car right like the Buick guys did!

Awesome video guys. I'm a little older than y'all so those cars came out when I was discharged from the service. I haven't seen many survivor cars like yours because the knuckleheads i hang with crashed them lol. I always liked those cars even though I'm a Mopar guy. Thanks for the down to earth approach to the recording. I think Ryan is a great dude and Javi is one of my favorite guys of the SO franchise.

Have both , 86 GN and an 89 TTA. Daily drive the GN, the TTA has 42,000 miles, great cars..Also a 1970 Boss 302!! Owned the GN since new

So happy to hear that you’re going to modify it. I’ve had mine since December of 1996. Best et 10.70 @ 128mph. I’ll never sell it, I’ve had many offers from friends throughout the years but it’s not going anywhere. Looking forward to seeing the changes you make to it. 👍🏼
Cool! My brother put a jet engine in his Mustang last spring, and the chicks really dig him.
In 1978 I worked on a 1978 Buick Lesabre 3.8L turbo with carburetor. Back then the guy that owned it blew up the engine. He wanted more power so I pulled them little V6 turbo out and installed a 455 Buick engine in it. In 1987 I bought a Grand National and if I had only known what I know now. WOW!

I grew up in the 80's and that car has always been on my bucket list. They ran 13 seconds bone stock. Wish I could afford one. Should have bought one 20 years ago when u could find a nice one for 8 to 10 grand. Those days are LONG LONG LONG LONG GONE LOL
What a car and the mods sound good. May i also say I've been binge watching your champion ship season on NPK and all i can say is you and your hole team is incredible. Im halfway around the world from South Africa on the west coast in a small town called Saldanha Bay and one day im gonna come and watch a race. Just to be there and here that noice and to feel it would be something. I have blown up 2 phone's but it was well worth it. .....lolol it was cheep phone's. Congratulations and i know next year is going to be just as good if not beter.

In 1987 I borrowed a Buick Regal T-Type to take my date to Prom. Basically the same platform as the Grand National except it was white. Another friend did have the earlier model Regal you mentioned with the V6 quad-jet and a turbo. I changed the oil in the beast in shop class a few times.
That’s a beauty, my brother in law has a 87 GN with all the bells and whistles done by cotton’s performance. Just sits in his garage believe it went low 10’s. Wants to sell it if your wanting something else so you don’t have to mod that car.
You can definitely put boxes on my car😂😂 there’s levels to this stuff. But you gotta know the levels 😂😂❤
I raced a Grand National in the 80's in my 69 Lemans convertible on Telegraph road in Detroit, MI and it made me look like I hit the brakes 😆
