these incredible musicians have been at the forefront of musical innovation for over 35 years! thank you Kronos quartet for your constant effort to explore new musical frontiers and for providing us with performances like this one!! love and respect
I love what this quartet stands for! I love how they play new modern works too freshen up classical's music pool and I absolutely adore the new cellist!
Just saw them play last night in RI at a benefit fund raiser for medical expenses for John Sherba's brother Charles (concertmaster of the RI Philharmonic.) They were outstanding. What energy!
This blew my mind when I finally saw them live! They played it so well but the composer is the master mind behind it. Thanks for posting this. I was kicking myself in the butt for not getting a video of them playing
I flew down to Atlanta to see them a few years ago (A. Never been to Atlanta B. Always wanted to see Kronos) - it was absolutely an audial experience. I can really appreciate the zero editting in this (other than perhaps balancing, there are a few mistakes in this from the studio recording) - yes, they are that good! There is something so blissful when the cello comes in at 1:15, and then again later with the viola in harmony.
This is my first listen to this group. I am flabbergasted. So thrilled that NPR presented your talents to all of us to enjoy. I think i have just found my new favorite group. Now i have to do some research to see if ya'll are coming to Louisville, KY. I hope you have a website. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Wonderful! I am a sucker for string music of all genres, but Kronos is always doing odd & beautiful stuff. Bravisimo! (And Geeshie Wiley is less forgotten than you might think. She came to the awareness of most through the R Crumb biopic/documentary. There is also a recent New York Times Magazine article about her & musical partner Elvie Thomas. The original, crackly 78 version is haunted, haunting, and a great (obscured by unfamiliar language) piece of story telling)
Antonio Giuseppe Vivaldi would find kindred spirits with these 4 amazing players. This is my first encounter with Kronos and my goodness they have taken my breath away. To have one virtuoso musician in a room, is remarkable, but to have 4 virtuoso musicians is from another galaxy.
Amazing! I saw them a month or so before this, in Vancouver premiering Philip Glass's new quartet. It was a revelation. They did things I didn't know you could do with music.
The Kronos quartet is famous for promoting and premiering a great deal of modern music, some of it more or less successful than others. You can't win them all.
Eegads. I haven't seen anything like this since back in 1982, playing Dark Side of the Moon on the Hi Fi to The Wizard of Oz on a new-fangled VCR with the TV's sound off. Check out this with performance with "The Lone Ranger - S01 E05: Rustler's Hideout (1949)" muted. Seriously. Wait a minute. Actually, this performance syncs perfectly with ALL the Lone Ranger Episode. It's uncanny...
It's also the way he bows. He bows hard, and a lot of his tone is in the bowing hand rather than vibrato or whatever on his other hand. Scraping the strings like he does produces all sorts of wonderful harmonics. The new cellist is great, but I really miss Jeanrenaud. She was fucking wild.
Ja mais ! J'ai reconnu le Frantzi Alsacien 🇮🇩, c'est un luthier et ancien pote, du début de notre vie d'adultes....... Maintenant nous allons sur 65 ans........ 😂😂😂
Why are violinists/cellists compelled to strike their notes w/ jittery head movements and such? The beginning around 0:33 looks like stop-motion photography.
The first 9 and a half minutes is unbelievable, and definitely worth a listen.
The entire thing is worth a listen!
@@kedgrickpullums8290 Agreed!

The cello is mind blowing!!!
Maybe that's why they go through so many cellists...
(FOOM... Dangit lost another one...)
There always is someone to make negative comments and spoil the atmosphere!
Love this performance, especially the powerful intro. The world needs Kronos Quartet.

Tiny Desk: Please upload more contemporary classical music like the great Kronos quartet.
I'm reading these comments, and I'm not sure what some of you were expecting from them. They're perfection in my view. I would love to see them live.

Watching this made me enter in some sort of mind trip... nice
This may be one the best performances I have seen in a long, long time.
Oh, I agree with you Reuben!
Wow! I've seen a few of these concerts but I think this one tops them all. What energy. Thank you.

they have so much amazing stuff, happy hunting!
Your life will be changed for good that's for sure!
I was introduced through the movies of aronofsky but they're recognisable through the strongbow cider adverts and especially TV talent shows
My gf is into an even harder score quartet that do medieval action movies they're very recognisable too
they created an universe of great music
That's some hardcore hocketing in the first piece.
Kronos Quartet es mi orquesta de cámara favorita desde 1985, cuando los conocí tocando a Thelonius Monk. Son lo máximo.
Fantastic performance - incredible muscians. very exciting.
They are amazing, and please come back to Colombia soon.
W0W! I can't imagine trying to read that sheet music and keeping time! A one and a...
Great stuff! I especially like the sound of the unusually strung violin in the last two pieces, which appears to have two D strings and two A strings.
Wonderful! I am a sucker for string music of all genres, but Kronos is always doing odd & beautiful stuff. Bravisimo!

When I listen to this when I’m anxious it helps for some weird reason.
i keep coming back to this, what a gem
I LOVE THIS GROUP.They are always Amazing. All the time suprised me.What a nice tone, what a nice song !!! Sooooooooooo goooooooood
I have discovered something which my soul loves! This is a wonderful performance, the first piece blew me away, amazing!
Oh, i stumbled upon the Golijov CD with David Krakauer and was looking for "more": found this: GREAT! Thanks!
They're all so brilliant!
absolutely amazing performance!!!
love these guys, i really find them inspirational
Antonio Giuseppe Vivaldi would find kindred spirits with these 4 amazing players. This is my first encounter with Kronos and my goodness they have taken my breath away. To have one virtuoso musician in a room, is remarkable, but to have 4 virtuoso musicians is from another galaxy.
Spectacular. Bryce Dessner is such a brilliant composer. Love it.
Yeah I can hear the national in there
They are great artists. I love them!
best rock'n'roll band, of all classical musicians!!
Amazing! I saw them a month or so before this, in Vancouver premiering Philip Glass's new quartet. It was a revelation. They did things I didn't know you could do with music.
They did Lullaby and Last Kind Words at that show too.
This is huge! Bravo guys!
That really looks like a LOT of fun
Kronos Quartet - touching the Absolute.
Metal af
We clearly see a masterpiecefully playing of a masterpiece in the first piece.
The Kronos quartet is famous for promoting and premiering a great deal of modern music, some of it more or less successful than others. You can't win them all.
Pure heavy metal. Great performance.
Bravo - Sounds amazing!
I love very much Kronos Quartet!
A dynamic performance by the premier "New Music" Kronos String Quartet!
Breathless.

jesus christ what a sound.
They have a great album with Alejandro Flores. Just search "El llorar" by Kronos Quartet.
I discovered them on Black Angels and thus far Nuevo is my favorite album by them and llorar is one if my favorite tracks!
so intense great stuff I love it
Oh, my...
Geez these guys are good.
Willow D'Arcy Amazing teachers as well! Had a masterclass with these guys and I learned so much.
Geez these guys and the gal are good. Duh.
The way the second violinist is pizzicatoing in the last piece is downright hilarious.
I love this group! They don’t play the derivate pieces everyone plays
Hermoso, muchas gracias por compartir esta bella musica / Beautiful, thank you very much for sharing this beautiful music.
THIS IS SO SICK!!!!!!! wow.
Pure excellence!
5.20 sounds like Autechre
Thrilling!!!
That. Was. Amazing.
So Good!
Last Kind Words at about 15: GW early recording available on this site.
I feel fancy being familiar with that Last Kind Words tune... it appears on the American Primitive collection Vol. II
My fave KQ track is Chavosuite. Wish they played it.
This is what happens when Masters at their art , go into free flow !
I'm in love with this music and the cellist.
The epik amazing!!!
So they rocked the foundation of the NPR building, Im sure.
¡MARAVILLOSO!
Love.
The instruments thunder like a choir of angry angles, pronouncing judgement on the lesser music of today!
I love the way they take you away with their music
Great Scott like this one. For I am Great Scott 😂❤
That viola!
fantastico, hermoso, la musica.
now thats creativity.
how come David's violin sounds so chorusy?? i don't notice any effects!
It looks like all the strings are tuned down about a 5th. He's playing an "A" on the top string instead of the "E" a 5th above that it usually is.
It's also the way he bows. He bows hard, and a lot of his tone is in the bowing hand rather than vibrato or whatever on his other hand. Scraping the strings like he does produces all sorts of wonderful harmonics.
The new cellist is great, but I really miss Jeanrenaud. She was fucking wild.
riveting….
If you enjoy this you might like the compositions of Georg Friedrich Haas too!
