- One of the most renowned and influential new-music groups of our time, the Kronos Quartet celebrates its 40th anniversary with an exclusive evening of music and conversation at The Greene Space.
For 40 years, the Kronos Quartet-David Harrington, John Sherba (violins), Hank Dutt (viola), and Sunny Yang (cello)-has pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to re-imagining the string quartet experience. Kronos has performed thousands of concerts worldwide, collaborating with many of the world's most intriguing and accomplished composers and performers, releasing more than 50 recordings of extraordinary breadth and creativity, and commissioning more than 800 works and arrangements for string quartet.

Why does the cellist keep changing?
I've wondered that too, maybe they are ambitious and the cello tends to be a bit more simplistic in the string quartet setting-compared to the rest of the quartet at least-- and they can usually perform solo material if they want to --OR--maybe it's the making someone learn 38 pieces for an audition which seems a bit excessive to me, and not all musicians -even classical musicians are willing or able to do that consistently and the Kronos Quartet has recorded and performed new pieces pretty consistently and quite a variety, meaning learning new things about music all the time, like the stylophone Sunny Yang was playing
