I absolutely LOVE both films! From Beyond and Reanimator were such fun to watch (censored for TV only - thanks to my Catholic mom and dad!) every Halloween here in Windsor Ontario. We used to have "Shocktoberfest" on TV in Detroit during the mid-1980's and thanks to being in Canada, across the river from Detroit, my brother and I used to look so forward to seeing these great, classic horror films on TV - which were the only ways he and I were allowed to watch them when we were younger....
I remember seeing From Beyond on VHS with my dad and stepmom. The flashlight dust turning into insects was scary as was the unforgettable final shot. For years, I got this film mixed up with Evil Dead until I saw that classic. #ThanksForChannelSurfing
brilliant movie...and they missed the point of the 'kinky sex'--it's that obsession with pushing the boundaries of sensation that drove Praetorius to risk it all to 'feel more'. Which is why the whips and chains stuff was added. Also why the repressed woman started wanting to get kinky and turned the machine on even after it she knew it was bad news, the way drug experimenters know meth and coke are dangerous, but do it anyway---that stuff was in there for a reason a truly brilliant little monster movie and one of my favs
Are we sure we know which of the two kinky sex scenes Siskel and Ebert are referring to. There is the one where Dr.Praetorius tears off her dress and does the thing with his elongated hand, and then there is a separate scene when she puts in the bdsm outfit she found in the room. It’s not clear from the video which one they mean. I think the first one, where the monster tries to “kiss her” with its hand down is a good and necessary scene. Maybe the bdsm scene was the one they meant as the less necessary. I liked it but since it was not well developed I thought perhaps it was only added to show the viewers more of her body.
Well, the part about the drug you mentioned was directly touched on by the policeman who cooked them dinner when he said “I saw this junkie behavior behold in the streets” or something. We don’t actually know that the doctor chick was repressed. IMO it’s entirely wrong. She became like that after the monster tried to eat her. He was the masochist who couldn’t get it up. It was just what was awakened with her from being exposed to the mind of Praetorius (he is merged with some other evil thing) , while the character of Jeffrey Combs had his own gland pop out and take him over making him sick the brains out. When she bit it off doing him a favor he snapped back into reality. That’s why when the assistant’s mind gets absorbed they have a contest of wills like in the other movie, Scanners. So the chick doctor only got a part of Praetorius mind from the initial exposure. Maybe that’s why it was emphasized she started to gradually laugh like he did.
To me it's like if Crowley's O.T.O./Thelema got a hold of Tesla technology - ala Nyarlathotep - And Kundalini Tantric rituals were added to the mix. But Doc was focused on S&M.
Always makes me sad to hear Ebert say Gordon might have a big future ahead of him for genre films like this... because they did NOT continue doing these crazy adaptations of Lovecraft stories. Re-Animator, From Beyond, and I think one more many years later (can't remember the name. It was about fishmonster in a small town... but I haven't seen it yet) were the only ones he did. I would have LOVED to see more. Maybe even with the same cast members returning over and over. Combs and Crampton mainly. Would have loved to see In The Mountains Of Madness by Stuart Gordon. Can you imagine?
You need to see Castle Freak. Stuart Gordon directed it and it stars Combs and Crampton. Great fun, and pretty creepy and was influenced by Lovecraft's The Outsider
1:13 Am I hallucinating, or is there Pink Floyd music added in the background there for a second? I also think I'm hallucinating, seeing Siskel like such a gross, violent movie.
Kaye Faye so it's been 3 years, but yes indeed that's a bit o' Shine On You Crazy Diamond (part II, I think) playing during that scene. Why? I have no idea as it's not in the actual film.
You're on the "Money." I feel like quite a lot of movies have Pink Floyd as temp tracks, even to this day, so maybe that's the clip that was available at the time.
Wow..thumbs up frome Gene!? I didn't see that coming..and Rog has nice things to say about StuartGorden, and his film Re-Animator!? I'm speechless.. These guys ain't so bad after all..
I saw this movie when it first came out on VHS. Right around the time I saw David Cronenberg’s The Fly at the theater. Stuart Gordon had body horror in From Beyond that even David Cronenberg himself would appreciate. Classic.
I'm shocked... I honestly thought Ebert, who liked a lot of underdog SciFi, might like this one while Siskel would be on the fence... But they flipped. Either way, their comments seem still applicable today. I love these guys. They were brilliant.
The concept of this film is great. I love the first scene where they turn on the resonator and see what was once invisible come to life. Comparing it to Re-Animator, it is smaller in scope (sets, characters) so it seems a bit cheap and claustrophobic. But the practical effects are more impressive than Herbert West's adventure.
I didn't have as much fun with _From Beyond_ as I did with _Re-Animator_ (or even _Bride of_), but I did like it. It's a damn shame Gordon & Co. didn't get to make the version of _Innsmouth_ they wanted to, because that would've been great. (Yes, yes, I know about _Dagon_. Didn't like it.)
Thank you Thank you Thank you soo much for not talking shit about this film. Every video I watch i expect them to say bad stuff about movies i grew up loving to watch because they have about alot of them but it's Awsome that this isn't one of them cuz i love From Beyond and H.P LoveCraft so much. And of course its gonna have grosse stuff in it it's a Horror movie the grosse stuffs the best part.
It's funny, many on here seem to be shocked about ol' S & E giving From Beyond praise but ya gotta remember Siskle, Ebert and Gordon were all from Chicago. Not to mention, Gordon was a bit of a Chicago semi-legend via him running the Organic Theatre. I'm not accusing them of favoritism, but let's just say if From Beyond was directed by a unknown California director, they might not be so generous. For the record: I love From Beyond and Re-Animator is in my top 3 horror films ever. And Gordon is one of the most original/imaginative directors to come out of the 80s horror boom (second only to Cronenberg). But I definitely feel there's a "our guy" bias to this review. Nothing wrong with that, it's just that S&E notoriously disliked and, frankly, misunderstood horror films (witness their hysterical--in every sense of the word--review of The Hitcher, where they bash the film for doing it's job and being effective), despite once in a blue moon getting it right, as with this, Halloween, and a (very) few others.
Ebert is right. Reanimator is better , but i think this movie is good enough because it goes through a no holds barred barrage of over the top scenes that make it fun!
Siskel didn't like Aliens because it was unrelenting... That was the point! I'll never understand people that complain about horror movies that don't have a funny side to them.
@KennyThaKilla You do realize when it comes to opinion there is no right or wrong? If Siskel thought it was better than Aliens than for him it is better than Aliens. We aren't dealing in facts here, but opinions. Aliens is now generally regarded to be a classic, but that still doesn't make it a fact that it is a masterpiece. And check your hearing Ebert didn't say From Beyond stunk all the way around. He kind of liked it, just not enough to recommend it.
There was more too it than showing off Barbara Crampton. The idea is that Crampton despite seeing the horrors of the machine twice over has grown addicted to it. That's the surface of it, however, it's also changing her in other ways. She put those on, because she wanted to imagine what it was like to be one of the women that Pretorius committed bondage with. The effect is heightened by the fact that it happens right as he's talking about the machine letting you see into other realms and whatnot. Eerie timing!
It was actually the other way around as Gene alludes to at the beginning. Roger worked with his friend Russ Meyer on his BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS certified shaka classic #cheese . I want to see the documentary about him where his friends at a bar called him the freak of the bunch. The only critic I usually read is Joe Bob Briggs aka John Bloom. I used to watch the original Siskel and Ebert show SNEAK PREVIEWS on PBS
"Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" and "The Last House on the Left" were rated highly by Ebert. He gave "Dawn of the Dead" a perfect four stars. "Re-Animator" and "Evil Dead 2" received positive reviews. Those are just some examples off the top of my head. Ebert hated formulaic slasher movies. He did not hate horror.
+sha11235 It's a compression error. According to the Wikipedia page on compression artifact: "When motion prediction is used, as in MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, compression artifacts tend to remain on several generations of decompressed frames, and move with the optic flow of the image, leading to a peculiar effect, part way between a painting effect and "grime" that moves with objects in the scene." I always find it eerie how the distortion seems to 'exist'; on the very objects in the video, moving around in 3D, but that's all down to the motion prediction. The video art of datamoshing exploits this effect to strangely beautiful effect.
