Varanasi (Hindustani pronunciation: [ʋaːˈraːɳəsi] ( listen)), also known as Benares , Banaras (Banāras [bəˈnaːrəs] ( listen)), or Kashi (Kāśī [ˈkaːʃi] ( listen)), is an North Indian city on the banks of the Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) south-east of the state capital, Lucknow. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also known as the favourite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva . It has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city in older times was known as Kashi .][not in citation given]
The Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) is the chief cultural patron of Varanasi, and an essential part of all religious celebrations.The culture of Varanasi is closely associated with the Ganges. The city has been a cultural centre of North India for several thousand years, and has a history that is older than most of the major world religions. The Benares Gharana form of Hindustani classical music was developed in Varanasi, and many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived in Varanasi. Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, located near Varanasi.
Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. It is often referred to as "the holy city of India", "the religious capital of India", "the city of Shiva", and "the city of learning". Scholarly books have been written in the city, including the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas. Today, there is a temple in the city, the Tulsi Manas Mandir. The current temples and religious institutions in the city are dated to the 18th century.[9] One of the largest residential universities of Asia, the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), is located here.
Varanasi has been chosen as one of the heritage cities for HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India.

Such a wonderful coverage of the spiritual side of Varanasi specially the sandhya Ganga aarti. Spirituality oozes from every nook and corner of this great ancient city. Only wished that the city municipal corporation managed the cleanliness and hygiene of the place even better given that it is a sacred place of worship with a huge number of foreigners flocking into Kashi from across the globe every day.

Sir, I have been told by the very old saint in Varanasi and in Haridwar that River Ganga is so divine that if you bath or wash your Body with its holy water Women NEVER get a Breast CANCER and Men NEVER get a Prostate CANCER. and that is one of the reasons NAGA Sadhu Bath complete naked so that holy water touches every part of their Body and Ganga maa save them from all diseases.

Like most places of pilgrimage in India it's a crumbling mess surrounded by vile concrete, surly youths on snarling motorbikes nearly knocking you down in the lanes and now the added horror of motors on traditional row boats. Sensitive restoration is required but Archeological Survey has little power these days. In neighbouring Madhya Pradesh Omkareshwar has been destroyed by hideous modern concrete walkways and bridges that have all the charm of a motorway overpass. Chitrakoot has had it's parikrama wrecked by corrugated metal roofing which gives the ambience of a bus shelter. Kolkata just produced a vile concrete sky walkway to Kalighat temple, so pilgrims don't have to walk on the streets. It looks like the entrance to a shopping centre. Vrindavan had it's dusty parikrama path turned into a ring road for the convenience of motorists! In the old days people rolled in the dust of that path to take the holy vibrations. It's all being destroyed by a clueless younger generation fresh from huge engineering colleges looking for projects, no one is trained to protect. So tragic, soon there will be nothing much left.
