The quintessential Karajan touch; subtle and subdued and then bursting to life. All at the pace he chooses. Suppe would agree! Brilliant; what an orchestra too.
When I first heard this piece of music, it was on an episode of Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse. At the time I was about 7 years old and I couldn't stop watching it, and every time I watched it, I laughed so hard I cried. This event sparked my love for classical music and I am eternally grateful to the people of Disney studio's for using classical music in their cartoons.
Tenía 13 años y aún me emociona.- Gracias.-
I first encountered this in the 70's. At the time, Ravel's Bolero was considered the go-to music for having sex, and someone suggested this as an alternative. At the time, that seemed like an amusing suggestion. Today, I think it would give me a heart attack.
Well…. me too! 😊 But since I need the exercise aaaanyhow, and having tried it, I can ‘heartily’ endorse this as just as much fun as you think it is. You’ll find my other comment on it elsewhere around here. Have fun and enjoyyyy! 😁
Wonderful. A terrific piece of music and a brilliant orchestra and the most amazing conductor who extrracted every last piece of skill from the musicians. Such a powerful andyet smooth delivery. An absolute joy to listen to.
A symphonic poem at its best. You can see the cavalrymen on their stallions marching off to battle. Then the somber realities of war appear which is very sad.
A great piece of music and a magnificent interpretation! I've been looking for it for years and years without even knowing its name. And here it is, directed by von Karajan! It may sound childish but I first heard this in an episode from a cartoon series back in the early '90s. As a live performance of this piece was just about to begin Goofy somehow managed to drop all instruments in the elevator shaft and the concert turned out to be a disaster :)) A million thanks for the upload!
But I am not sure if the young nowadays like the good old 1940's 1950's Hanna Barbara cartoons.I love them all especially Buzz Bunny conducting the Light Calvary overture.I just couldn't stop laughing. My most favourite of all is the bull dog conducting a team of construction animated animal workers with Franz Liszt orchestrated version of his well known Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 in c minor.
Each time I listen to this, I can imagine a light cavalry charging their enemy and that bass drum at 2:49 is a cannon being shot right over their heads.
Maybe it is of interest that "Leichte Kavallerie" was the first operetta dealing with - in those times recurring - the "Magyar" (hungarian) long before e.g. Strauß' "Zigeunerbaron". You can hear it around 4'20" with the theme of a czardas.
RUclips says that the artist ist Franz Welser-Möst. Not von Karajan. Who is the real conductor? And the orchestra is anonymus - is it the orchestra of the Russian (then Soviet) army?
+sugiton 13 BTW i love Sir Georg Solti ...he was not nazi...I owe pictures And autographs. Verdi Requiem directed by Sir Georg Solti is really the DOOMSDAY.

The tempo here is exquisite. I keep this piece always ready at bedside for the most joyful parts of evening. Making for most pleasant moments. 🤗
Ein genialer Musiker und Dirigent. Fühle förmlich seine Schwingung. Habe ihn persönlich noch erlebt. Unvergesslich.

A great show-stopper and one of the best warhorses in the repertoire.

Franz von Suppé, mostly overlooked, composed some great music.
what a great piece. thanks for posting! (:
Franz von Suppe was born in the town of Split (Croatia) during Austrian Empire.
After hearing this overture, I feel like mounting my steed, rallying my cavalry, and establishing a unified Germany!
I see white stallions dancing the quadrille. The nuns in grade school played this for us to get us to love classical music. Thanks sisters! It worked.
Amazing!!!

I always liked this from a child.
AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH SO EPIC
This piece brings back memories. :)
"Little K". has once again proved his rigorousness in execution, extreme power.
