@@sharonstrong7854 I got to see them after You Get What You Play For was out and they were promoting “Tuna Fish”. Gary was amazing. The band rocked! The next time I saw them was Nine Lives tour. Just horrible. You could tell Gary wasn’t having fun. Bunch of la la love ballads. So disappointed. I later heard Kevin Cronin say in an interview that REO was better without Gary because his solo’s were to long. What a jerk.
I've heard other guitarists try to imitate this song. I've never heard anyone come close to all of his techniques. It's like someone trying to play solo for firebird. Never be another Allen Collins, never be another Gary Richrath.
At 1:07 he turns to the stage manager and pointing to his head.....he wants more headroom.....then at 1:12 he gets it.....and hears it in the monitors in front of him....and turns again to the stage manager at the board....he doesn't want it in front on his monitor he wants it behind coming from the amp....then he gets it. And smiles.....at 2:12 drops his pick....turns and gets another...lol...things you pick out if you have performed live enough times... He was a VERY UNDERRATED player......RIP Gary.....you WERE a true star

I still remember seeing these guys in college somewhere between 1977 and 1982. Gary is one of those very rare guitar players that when you watch him it just seems effortless. The man and the guitar become one. He was doing what he was meant to do. RIP

I am old enough to remember wearing out REO Speedwagon 8 trak tapes. Was ALWAYS a Gary Richrath fan. In my house it is not X-mas till hear Bruce Willis say "yippe ki yi ya MF" in the movie Die Hard. And it is not Thanksgiving till I hear The Flying Turkey Trot. RIP Gary Richrath.
Gary was simply an amazing talent! Those notes are absolutely kickin'! I would willing to bet that kevin is/was jealous of hardly having any screen time in this video.
He is one hell of a cool and great guitarist, I am learning to play e-guitar and my mentor who is ace has great respect for Gary. Agreed that REO just is not the same without him, its like their back bone has gone. BTW, I am female, not male :-)
Nice to be greeted from the UK!! Greetings back, from Florida!! Dave Amato is a terrific player...stunningly, technically proficient. But, Gary put so much more EMOTION, character, & personality into his playing, in my opinion. Example: watch Gary play the KOLY solo in the '85 Kemper Arena show here on YT, versus ANY of the Amato solos for the same song. God bless, mate!!
One of the few guitarists who genuinely smiles when he plays rather than a labored drawn look. I'm guessing EVH took his lightend happy expressions to heart.
never saw this lineup of REO, but I sure do wish I could have. i wish the band could have put one more studio album out with Gary and Alan on a couple of bonus tracks. hands down, my favorite band, and I will never stop listening to their music
