Fender Super Sonic 22 vs Fender Deluxe Reverb

- In this video, I am comparing the Fender Super-Sonic 22 to the Fender '68 Deluxe Reverb FSR. I will compare them both clean and with pedals. I will also compare how the drive channel of the Super-Sonic 22 compares with a pedal on the deluxe reverb.

You reviewed the two amps I wanted to see, with my same guitar, and my favorite pedal. If ever there was a perfect tone comparison for me, this was it!!! Thanks!
PS: Its deluxe for me for sure. Even though I think the SS is super cool.
Excellent review and very useful. Great playing mate !!! A big THANK YOU. I tested them both today, and I went home with the SS. It has more Strat character, it is more versatile and more importantly you can configure it way better. It sounds way better at low volume.
Hey Skytalker -- any update on home use for the SS at low volumes? Too loud if the family is asleep upstairs?
Another great clip Shane. I have an SS22 and I think it's a fantastic amp. In a perfect world, I'd have a 68 DR as well. They're one of the nicest amps I've ever has the pleasure to try.
I was hoping for this shoot out! I bought the Blues Deluxe largely because of this channel, and I absolutely love it. But I would go for the Super Sonic next if I needed it, or had the unstoppable GAS for it...It sounds great here, and in person it sounds even better.
Great comparison -- seems they have more in common than differences, and are both great sounding amps. I was expecting a bigger difference between the two to be honest (or maybe my ears are just lacking)! Subtle differences come down to personal taste, but nice to know you can't really go wrong with either one. Thanks for a really helpful review!
I agree with you on the differences. It seems the deluxe reverb captures a little more of the strat sound and the super sonic is a little more aggressive. I love them both, though. Another great video from you!
They both sound wonderful ! I also love the 40W Blues Deluxe. Bottom line, play them with humbuckers & single coils. There all great so pick what you like. My opinion. Blues On.... 💙
Excellent! Very informative. Never thought about Supersonic, but I am now. Going to your other vids on the ss. Big thanks!
You can never have too many Amps, pedals or guitars. Blues On.... 💙

Hey Shane@intheblues I know this is an older video, but thanks for doing it. I’m literally right in the middle of this question right now.
Awesome picking mate . Have Super sonic 60 myself. Keep on rocking.
Hreat vid as usual
..I have had a SS 22.forva few years now...super piece of kit, that does it all. I can't imagine ever getting rid of it. Definitely one of the most versatile and fun amps ive ever owned
I own a SuperSonic 60 with a Warehouse Reaper 55 speaker and it's a killer. Loud enough for any situation plus I use the effects loop as a lead boost, Awesome amp for sure.
I have the stock Custom Deluxe and I tend to always use the Custom channel, it has more bottom end and take pedals better I think than the vintage channel.
I've had the SS22 for about 5 years. It's got so much to offer in regards to tone prior to employing any pedals. Amazing bit of gear.
Initially I had some issues with some rattling noise, and my amp guy suggested putting some bands on the tubes which helped.
He also removed the cage around the tubes. I think fender should have used a slightly heavier gauge of steel in the build. Once all that was sorted, I have no complaints at all. Best part, my old man back can lift this 28lb amp with ease.
I like them both but, I like the Supersonic best as I think I could play it sans any pedals . Great demo as always mate ! :-)
Supersonic 22 hack: play it with an Engager Boost EQ and a slight mid drop/bassboost and you get that 68 reverb squish with a gain channel! Thank me later 😉
Hey Shane, I’ve had the Supersonic 22 since it first came out. I’ve played it live with great results and recorded with it also with great results. The deluxe reverb sounds very much like the SS so I’d probably would have purchased it too. The SS has so much versatility that I’m happy with my decision. Thanks for the contrast between the two. I really enjoyed it.
Like the Dr. John poster on the wall 😎
Great comparison and I love them both. Lately I've been listening to the AKG Sound Design Blues Special on RUclips. The clean headroom is amazing I just wish they were available here and less money but the clean tone is unbeatable and they are also 22 watts.
The part at 8:00 was very good - I'd opt for the SS over DR with a pedal - reacts to your finger pressure and sounds better.
I LOVE THE SUPER SONIC 22 !! MY FAVE FENDER AMP ! AWESOME REVIEW SHANE ! LOVE THE GAIN WITH A FENDER AMP \M/
I think you hit the nail on the head, Shane. The SS is definitely a bit on the pokey side, speakerwise. Never played it with a band, but it definitely moves some air! The added flexibility of a VERY tweakable drive channel makes it a winner. I've only played the 60, though. My question is: Will the SS 22 do a reasonable imitation of "that" Deluxe Reverb sound? You know, the gorgeous overdrive you get when you crank the hell out of one?
( I'm afraid to turn the 60 up that loud in the store, for fear of causing an avalanche or bringing the roof down on myself lol.)
There is no question for me even before I heard them. The supersonic does it all. The Super Sonic has always been on my list for years. But right now I don't need anything that big. I remember when they were prosonic.
I have the supersonic 22 it is a very versatile amp I like to push the drive channel with a clean boost too
Me too. I boost the drive channel for fatter single notes, and keep the dry signal open and crunchy. Works really well. Its a great amp.
Which one sounds best?

Super sonic sounds better
Super Sonic... now I want one & am perusing Sweetwater at the present. Playing out of my Peavey Classic 30 at the present, a great amp, but the tones coming out of the SS, wow.
Turn off the supersonic fat when running the overdrive channel and I bet they would be even closer.
Super sonic. One of the best sounding amps ever made.
@@beausw...But the FAT is in the clean channel, not in the overdrive channel
ive got a jerry (garcia) rig set up long story behind that, i love jerry garcia, i was looking to get a more standard style set up as well so i'm looking at fenders, i'm starting to love the idea i could play without my pedal board sometimes through the sonic 22, you're demos are ridiculously helpful making this ground breaking all important decision of what amp to choose, i'm like 85% leaning towards the ss22
Both sound great. The Deluxe Reverb sounded a little more HiFi. The Super Sonic seemed wilder! Somehow I found myself with a Hot Rod Deluxe, love that punchy sound you get from all the clean headroom.
Great review. I tried that same amp at Sky Music and loved the drive channel. As with the neo speakers, I did a direct comparison between the neo Creambavk and the traditional one. The neo sounds very close. Perhaps closer to the sound of a Vintage 30. It is a MUCH better sound for blues than the Jensen. Have you tried the Tone Master Blonde yet?
They both sound really good. I liked the Deluxe Reverb a little more because I heard a bit more sparkle. I has just a little more high-end frequencies that sound really nice to me.
Shane is a master of finding the sweet spots of any gear he demos. He really understands where the goods are with these amps. Everything sounds killer.
A very good comparison.
What I love about this amp is, pretty much, everyting. Great cleans, creamy overdrive.
Hi Shane, what you Call less muffled I Call better tone separation - The SS has that over the entire spectrum. I personally always prefer that
Thanks Shane for very interesting comparison. I remain with more question though, how does a Bassbreaker 15/30 compare to the Supersonic ?22? Also the Deluxe 68 is not a Blackface, so that I prefered the Clean of the Supersonic, while I prefered the overdriven tones of the Deluxe 68. At the end of the day, I'm a Vox AC man 😎 even if I would enjoy a Supersonic besides.
Great to have choices- can't go wrong with either. My 68 has the V series 70 watt speaker and it's one of my favorites.
why didnt you use the Bassman Channel on the 68 deluxe reissue? Certainley would have made a difference
Both great amps Shane.
Great video, thanks 👍
I own the SS 22 and I chose it because of the drive channel. What Shane didn't mention is that it comes with a 4 button footswitch so you can switch on reverb, effects loop, fat/normal(clean channel), and vintage/burn on the drive channel. The drive channel can also be further tweaked with the two gain knobs that tailor the sound in different ways.
68 Deluxe footswitch CANT CHAGER channel?
@@ChJpop Deluxe reverb has a 2 button footswitch that switches between reverb and vibrato.
@@pilotgi clean channel can change gain channel?
I have the supersonic 60w head. Fabulous tone and loads of volume.
Hi ! Great demo ! I’m thinking about buying a supersonic, i like quite all of it , but i have just one doubt: clean chanell is good to use also as a pedal platform in Your opinion ?
Thanks
Great video! I'm trying to decide between the supersonic and the vibroloux reverb...1x12 vs 2x10...🤔
Supersonic VS Bassbreaker?
Thank you for this video. I've liked the supersonic for a long time but imo the 65 delux reverb I had sounded better live and a much better pedal platform...that said, you failed to mention these things are tanks, not a bad thing, but very heavy!
Cool vid!!! For studio purposes, do you prefer the 65 or 68 dr?
I've got a super sonic 60 with a celestion gold. I also own a Dr z wreck and I like the tone of the fender just as much, great amps.
Dr Z Z Wreck is a devastating savage amp...absolutely killer rig!
The 68 Series DR sounds real good for clean, sort of full and sweet. I usually plug into it at GC to test guitars, as I always factor clean tone as the baseline, dirty comes easy after that with pedals. However, I bought the Super-Sonic 22 used in excellent condition for an all around gigging amp. It has plenty of usable clean with the fat/vintage switch on the clean channel, and is very versatile with the two gains and middle control on the burn channel, letting you skip your dirt pedals. No brainer for me.
I use my 68 twice a week with a creamback neo and sometimes struggle with tone but it ALL has to do with pedal
selection and I am a pedal guy so I can usually find a solution....the amp is a good platform.....but not as good as my
AC30 which is way heavier!........thanks mate
Supersonic seems best. But i just a few months ago got the fender blues deluxe reissue and the Vox ac30c2 and totally love them
The SS with the FAT switch engage, is a KILLER sound! It floors the DR easy to my ears.
Shane, here in the States at Sweetwater either of these can be had for $1,050. They both sound great for a 22 watt 1x12 tube amp. But for the same money you could have a different Fender amp (200 watt 2x12) that you can't tell apart from it's tube amp counterpart. I used to have 1980's Fender Twin Reverb and sold it because you'd break your back moving it to a gig. The Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb is the amp you could be comparing to these two. It's loud (200 watts) and it's half the weight of it's tube amp brother. And playing them side by side I can't tell them apart. It would be interesting to see what you think of it.
Well your solid state amp works great until it breaks and no tech can figure how to fix it. That happened to me. I will never buy a solid state amp again.
In a perfect world I would just own both the Supersonic and the 68 Deluxe Reverb!!!! I just have love affair with the 68 that I have to get one!!! The SS 22 really sounds amazing and I love the tone this amp has!!!! Oh well I guess I’m going to spend the next year working to buy both 🤣🤣😝🤣 Great video mate!!! Cheers!!🎸🎸🤙🏾🎸🤙🏾
No you have to choose. I always see you have a hard time choosing. LOL which one I'm curious
Guitar Ocd 🤣🤣🤣 The 68 Deluxe Reverb will be my next amp!!! I’ve always wanted one and it’s got the tones I want out of my Strats
Good choice and it looks cool too.
Don't forget to pick up a Blues Deluxe also, down the road... Lol
HUTCHfromBA 🤣🤣
Hey Shane, I'm in Melbourne (for the first time) this weekend, are there any music stores you recommended I visit?
Check the guitar search saturdays series. There's so many great guitar shops here. Sky Music is a winner they have lots. If you like used stuff check out the Swop Shop.
Will you ever review a Fender Vibrolux '68? In my opinion a vastly underrated amp!
The deluxe reverb has 2 clean channels as well, right? The normal channel sounds quite different (more fat?) from the tremolo channel, if I remember correctly.
Please review the Joyo D-Seed 2! Love your videos
Revisiting this....the stock speaker is great. But...try a Celestion G12 Alnico Gold in this combo and something pretty incredible happens. Clarity increase on both channels in just the right frequencies. Massive increase in harmonics, with ability to round out the tone in just about any way you like. Effects in the loop jump to life in a big big way. It's an expensive upgrade, but man is it good.
68 all the way. That tone with the Maxon was killer.
One question: is that (Silver Face) DR the "68 Custom" model that Fender released 3-4 years or so ago? That model was never referred to as a"re-issue", as some have alluded to. Rather, it's a mod'ed model wherein channel one was purported to have a Bassman-like voicing, and channel two was more or less like the regular DR. So, given that, you could in fact do an A/B between the SS 22's "Fat" setting on ch 1 (which i think is supposed to mimic a Bassman voicing), and the 68 Custom ch 1, to compare corresponding Bassman voicings. If i'm wrong, then scratch everything i've said :-) Anyway, thanks for another video.
Yes on the super sonic the clean channel is suppose to be the D.R. & the other is suppose to be the Bassman.
@@bobbymcdonald1947 Where did you get that information. I have a ss22 head and never heard that. Why I'm here today is because I've been researching the DRRI thinking of buying one but maybe I already have the better of the two. I may try some speaker swaps in the cab I use. At 71 I'm still trying to find peace with tone. I think I'll have them put these words on my tombstone HE STOPPED CHASING TONE TODAY ha!ha! Cheers Great video Shane!
First passage said deluxe reverb to me
Looking forward to the Tonemaster reviews !!
supedersen I got my Tone Master Deluxe Reverb 10 days ago. Used it at a gig last Saturday night. I play in a harder edged rock band with Gibson SG. Loved it. Does everything a Deluxe Reverb does (I have both). Used Fulltone OCD overdrive. More than plenty loud enough.
Put a Celestion red back in the SS and then you'd really have a great gig worthy amp.
So, Shane, supersonic, deluxe reverb or that twin tone master? And yes Shane you were right about the GT... sounded good to the uninitiated but yeah, a pain to dig out the good tones... thanks for following up and now checking out the twin tone master...
Your comments about live use w/ the Super Sonic make sense ..... I've seen ALOT of SS's on live stages over the years ..... even Clapton has plugged into them .... if it's good enough for "god", it's good enough for the " common folk ".
Thx for your continued video work ..... you're a pleasant guy to watch too :-)
. Does the supersonic come with ATENUATOR?
Or is there one on sale x this model and works well....?
Spooky... I'm just tossing up between a '65 Deluxe RI and a SuperSonic; plus now, the Tonemaster Deluxe (because of the weight and IR's, etc). Good timing; thanks!
Having just listened right through (and bearing in mind, I like the '65 over the '68 Deluxe anyway) I think the choice is now between a Tonemaster Deluxe and a SuperSonic. Thanks!
What pick ups in that tele?
Just get both!
We have the 22 in our studio ..with 32 other amps....but the Supersonic is the Deluxe with stage gain tubes added for bone crushing tone
I’m left handed but started playing my brother’s righty guitar when I was a wee lad. Just got stuck into right handed playing and
it’s bad because I can grab more guitars for my addiction.
It’s all tube gain with no diode circuit in the 22. The 22 is a gnarly beast.
The 2 gains turned up will melt the cables.
Your playing too good..it’s hard to pick one...could you play crappy so I can get a better picture of how it would sound to me hahaha
I would love to see a comparison between a super sonic 60 and a hotrod DeVille. Great comparison that super sonic is amazing, the 22 sounds amazing but the 60 watt version I think has a little better head room.
Does the DR hiss / Noise ?
A friend sent me this link. He has the Super Sonic, I have the Reverb Deluxe. Both great amps. The SS has more power and a larger speaker. At lower volume I personally like the Deluxe.
Great video.
I own the Super Sonic 22. It is a great Amp for people who cannot afford pedals and a solid tube amp. But if I wanted versatility, my Egnator Tweeker 15 is better at that. My preference is a hand wired 64 Delux Reverb. The delux reverbs just have a more crisp and clear tone. Comparatively, the SS 22 sounds muddy-er than the 68 DR20. A good pedal gives more on the DV. IMHO.
Just for context, the SS22 is an all tube amp. No modeling. Spring reverb. Solid in it's own right. $1100 isnt a cheap amp. It's not $2700 like my Mesa Mark V. But it doesnt pretend to be.
Thanks Shane ✌
This is the good example how different speakers affect the overall sound. Have you tried both amps with same speakers?
What years are these amps? Are they re-issues? Does the Deluxe have an OD channel also? So, it seems you tested the Supersonic with the OD channel and had to use an OD pedal for the Deluxe, is that correct?
correct, there is no OD channel on a deluxe reverb.
Shane, which one has the Most Clean Headroom?
Shane, any suggestions how to get either the SS22 or DR sound at half the volume (for in home/office)? Doesn't have to be exact, but these are such good platforms (and actually drive versatility in the case of the SS22). But, for me they are just too big, heavy and loud. Appreciate what you do!!!
Tried the Fender '68 custom champ ??
Shane what speaker is in that supersonic?
Can you do a comparison of the black star ht20 vs Fender Supersonic 22 thank you
I don’t know how much the speaker is affecting it, but the supersonic seems to have a little less bottom and little more mids, maybe an little more presence.
I think the supersonic sounded better with the drive pedal in front but the deluxe sounded better clean.
Can I have both? great video!!!
I like the Super sonic better, but the deluxe has more headroom and sounds clearer. So, off the record, how does the ss drive channel with that maxon pedal sound?
With a Strymon Sunset, Chase Bliss Brothers, or Xotic RC Booster it's amazing. The clean headroom is louder than expected. The SS22 is a loud amp. More than you'd expect.
SuperSonic is my choice, but I must ask if you're still interested in the BassBreaker?
This comparison would be greater if you tried both amps with same speaker. Ss20 comes with an eminence fender characterless designed speaker and deluxe reverb comes always with a high end speaker like c12n , celestion g12v , creamback etc , it makes a huge difference.
Is the supersonic as noisy as I've heard?
I like the Supersonic very much! Does it have a FX loop?
I'd like to hear it through my Fane A60 Alnico speaker.
Yes
I used to have a SS22, but the noise floor had so much hiss, there was no way to record with it unless you were cranked. However, I loved the drive channel.
Hi may I ask you how did you solve the hiss? I have the same problem with my ss22 head version at the clean channel🤦♂️🙏
@@kulishekkulda3785 I was never able to eliminate it. I eventually traded it in. I would still have it today if it wasn't for all the hiss.
@@michaelmcwilliams4705 ok thank you very much for you answer, and only the best🥃
No custom channel?
Huh - just before you said it I thought "Deluxe for the studio, Super Sonic for the gig."
I have a 65 Deluxe Reverb. Is that alright with you? 😇
Greeting to a to you felloe southpaw! just wached this demo., thanks for posting it I was just in this situation super sonic of deluxe. I was just in this situation trying to decide which one to go with, I'm gooing with the SS22, just out of curiosity what were the strings you use nickel plated, chrome plated or pure nickel.. Once again thamks for posting!
They are both great sounding amps! :)
I own the 60 watt Super Sonic and I think it’s great!!!
Me too, no regrets
@@tioposer I have the Super-Sonic Twin 100/25 watts. Great sound, but 85 lbs. I so I am going for a 27 lb head version Super-Sonic 22 head, black tolex with familiar mid sixties grille. I think the Super-Sonic 60 is discontinued. But it is a great amp. I think Fender will bring it back in another series but still have the same features, because when you have a successful format, keep it coming. If an amp is too reliable then nobody buys a replacement. Fender needs to generate income to keep coming up with new stuff.
Please do a test between the super sonic and the prosonic.
The prosonic has superior build quality.
Wow!..
That supersonic, has got it in spades!
Does all i need, done.
Good day Shane, I have the Supersonic 22 and it is a no brainer for me, I dont know about the Deluxe Reverb but The taper on the volume pot of the Supersonic is extreme, above 1 is to loud for home practice, but the Supersonic has an FX loop making it easy and possible to fit a volume box/ pedal making the amp more versatile for home practice, the Supersonic is a bit cheaper too. Great amp. Fender Supersonic, give me gin and tonic, all the time.
I'd consider putting a 5751 in V1 reduces the initial gain. I can play my SS22 at TV levels quite happily and plenty loud enough for a 5 piece band.
Like my 22! Great little gig amp.
By the way.....have you got that BB-30R yet????
They both sound great but I’d take the Marshall behind them and a super reverb before those two :)
Really like your A-B tests on these amps! One thing you didn't do(because you can't in a short video haha) is compare the fat channel on the 22 while jumping the 2 channels together on the 68. That's how I play my 68 and it's very close I think but i sold my 22 before getting the 68. Selling the 22 was a mistake I admit. Thanks for the video!!
Why use just the Vintage channel on The 68 ? Not really a great comparison as the Custom channel on The 68 Deluxe is a Bassman tone stack and takes pedals way better.
