    My Les Paul sounds amazing through my SS 22, an OCD overdrive, and keeley compressor. Sounds 100% like a GNR Slash tone. It’s sounds insanely good. My very favorite amp

    I totally agree with you about Mesa tone controls. They are ridiculous, like operating a Rube Goldberg contraption. Fender really got it right with the Super Sonic which will be my next amp. I have a DSL now, 20 watt, and absolutely love it, but I need to have more than one amp, and I like Fender's take on overdrive with that amp. I would probably use my Boss SD-1 Waza or MXR or a Tube Screamer or Maxon with it, as I always use overdrive pedals, but just put boost for leads, or contour the overdrive. I would do this with any amp, even a Bogner. It's not about the amount of gain, but the shape of that gain. I love the chewy, spongy, tubey goodness of the Super Sonic. Been a fan since I tried one over a decade ago. They feel good to play.

    I bought my SS22 in 2012 & it’s been an amazing amp right out of the box . This amp is is so versatile & you can play just about any genre of music without using many effects . The clean channel sounds like Twin ,maybe even better IMHO & the overdrive is is
    just wow & you do not need a peddle for more overdrive for this 😮🙂 I have 3 guitars that I play through , a G&L Fullerton Deluxe Comanche , a Fullerton Classic Bluesboy Deluxe & a Fender Big Apple Strat & they all sound incredible 🙂👍

    I’ve used a SuperSonic 60 watt for years and I really think it’s criminally underrated amp. I also have an Orange which I love, a PRS which has great cleans but nothing beats the drive channel on the SuperSonic. The SuperSonic with a TS-808 or any really good overdrive pedal is pretty perfect. And the reverb tank is great too. But I’ve used a SuperSonic on gigs with a Strat, TS-808 and an old Vox Wah and cut through the mix so well and a lot of people really liked the tone. Now I use a Centura, King of Tonen, a TS-808, Gladio and a couple of MojoHand FX fuzz pedals and some others I switch on and off but you really don’t need a lot of pedals with this amp.

      Sounds super fun, I’m hoping to have the opportunity this summer to open it up a bit. I really like the tone as the clean channel volume creeps up above 3 or so and you’re right, not a lot of pedals needed. YES! Orange, everyone needs at least one, lol. My orange of choice is the Brent Hinds #4 - brutal :)

      One of the best tones is to turn the clean channel up til it starts to get crunchy, but as you do it does start getting a bit loud. 3 or 4 and it starts o break up, but stuff in the room will start to rattle as well. The dirty side can be turned down regardless of gain.

    Interesting amp. But I'm not fully understanding the difference between the Deluxe reverb and the Super Sonic. Both use the same 6V6 power tubes and 12AX7 and 12AT7 preamp tubes. Both push 22 watts into a single 12" speaker. The Deluxe has tube rectifier while I believe the S.S. uses solid state rectification. Looking at the front panels, the Super Sonic has a channel with possibly some flexible gain options and sports an effects loop. The Deluxe does not have an effects loop but it's ability to drive pedals is legendary. Could you sum up the differences? My experience with both amps is a lack of clean headroom

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  4 года назад +1

      Reggie Wallace - I think you’ve pretty much nailed it. The fx loop is the biggest factor for me but the drive channel is nicely different too. My experience with Fender amp and ‘driven tones’ is this 1) they just keep pushing til the speaker distorts 2) they push so hard that the tube distorts but this is usually way too loud 3) or they have a ‘flarpy’ sounding distortion similar to #1. The Bassbreakers had an awesome driven sound that I really liked but there was no footswitching between the 3 levels of gain. The latest HRD40 seemed like it was trying to compete with some of today’s high gain amps and to me sounded more like a fuzz box. I don’t have a lot of experience with the Deluxe other than the spec sheet (but no fx loop so its out) but do like how the Sonics gain stays so soft and warm and then if pushed begins to growl without sounding like a Marshall, or Modern High Gain amp of some sort. It stays really open and lose and with the two gain structures you can get some really interesting tones. I’m not real concerned with Max Headroom ;-) don’t mind some breakup and shimmer in my cleans and as far as pedals... so far SO GOOD!

    • @tedunguent156
      @tedunguent156 4 года назад

      @@oldguyjammin9732 Actually, the HRD does have line out and power amp in so you do have an FX loop there.

      The 'burn' channel with both gains at 9 sounds like a very tasteful HIGH gain amp, lots of creamy musical harmonics, it was the reason I got one. This amp will not get harsh no matter what you do. It is an entirely different product in my opinion than any other Fender to date factoring in both of its channels.

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  4 года назад +1

      Evan Keal - you’ve nailed Evan with “an entirely different product”. The ‘suggested tones’ paper that comes with it takes one on a sonic journey, and none of it bad. Super happy with it cause it’s different than anything else, in the best possible ways \m/ thanks for swinging by!

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  3 года назад

      Hmmm, that would really depend on your mood. The SS has two channels which is a plus but the BB has an incredible crunch and gain that is really unique and thick. If you play mostly humbucker rock and hard rock I’d go with the BB, if you’re mostly a strat or tele guy I’d go SS. What always drove me nuts about the BB was having to go to the amp to change drive setting. Why, oh why didn’t Fender make that switchable!?!? I’d even preferred having only two of the drive settings but make it switchable!

    • @landon.cunningham
      @landon.cunningham 3 года назад +1

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  3 года назад

      @@landon.cunningham - you’re right that the BB30 has two dedicated channels, clean (no gain) and dirty. That would be nice. I was referring to the 15 like you thought, one channel with three gain settings but no way to switch them via a footswitch. Between the two amps, the cleans will probably be similar but the gain side is going to be very different. The BB is much more modern and aggressive imo while the SS is way more classic and fuzz.

    I can't and never could understand why somebody with a high gain all tube amplifier would want to use a solid state fuzz box like a "Rat"..or any other type of distortion pedal for that matter unless your trying to get a "Inagaddadavida"- Iron Butterfly type fuzz tone.

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  2 года назад +1

      One never knows what sort of goodness a particular OD pedal will create until one tries a few. For me ODs are necessary for the searing compressed lead tones that sustain and ringout forever. At times, leaving one ON between both channels creates just that sort of breakup we’re looking for, BUT I will say that NO pedal will adequately simulate that natural organic thunder that properly pushed tubes produce!!

      Mark K - first off, sell the Line6. I know what you mean about those volume spikes, some good tones in there but hard to setup. Between the Katana and the Stang I’d nod to the Katana. Between the 50W Kat and the Spark...? It’s a matter of volume and features. The connectivity and gadgetry of the Spark is pretty darn cool and the models sound great. If you want to play with a drummer you’ll need the Katana. Jammin’ at church or in the dorm or by yourself I’d probably suggest the Spark. Both hook right up to your computer for recording, both have great models, the Kat is louder but the Spark has “stuff!” \m/

      The Spark looks cool, seen tons of demo/reviews on youtube. I am on the fence cause the Katana is $229 and the Spark is what...$299? Have you tried out the Katana 100...I kind of want an effects loop so I can use a looper when I get to that point in my learning. can the Kat 100 sound good at low bedroom type volumes?

      Mark K - the Kat100, because it’s digital and has power reduction, can indeed sound great at lower bedroom-like levels. It’s also a full on amp that’ll keep up with a drummer. PLUS, like you said, it has the fx loop. I enjoyed the Kat100 for several months before having to make room for other stuff. I think there are two versions out at this point so you may even find a steal on one. One thing you may need to do is move the fx loop (in the deep editor) from in front of the preamp stage to between the preamp and power stage - yes! You can do that, lol. I don’t remember exactly what issue I was having but I do remember having to move it so my looping phrase stayed pure. Not a big deal, you’ll have to download the Katana software, then plug into your amp - fun stuff!!

    Great review. By the way, either this amp think itself is a Marshall or you are playing the Marshall below by mistake?:)

      Nope, I was playing the correct amp this time. It has a very appropriate dirty side.

      @@oldguyjammin9732 I really mean no offense, while I can play both my timing is sometimes junk, my strum flow misses, and I end up playing a melody instead of a lead, wasn’t meant to be a knock, more like do yo thang brotha.
