I'm glad you enjoyed it man I wanted to do this one for a while but I wasn't at that 1mil yet then you lowered it so I had to request this one definitely one of my favorites second to Cursed
This song is about depression. He wouldn’t talk to a friend in a negative way the way he talks to himself in his head. It’s about keeping feelings bottled up
Its not just about talking to a friend in a negative way (though i will not say that's not how some people mentally do things) its that those of us who battle with depression will carry on 'conversations' with ourselves. Not in a 'crazy person' talking to ourselves way that crops up in movies and such, more that we literally 'play out conversations' in our head.... we literally will talk to 'ourselves' the way we WANT to talk to our friends, but its extremely hard to do that in reality. We will play out in our minds 'talking' to friends, and our minds will play back what we would 'hope' our friends would say in response. "I spent the next five lines asking bad questions: 1) How could i hit rock bottom never learning a lesson? 2) Do i deserve this hurting? 3) If my body goes limp will i float to the surface? 4) How can i live in a world with no purpose? 5) How could i change when im still the same person?" 5 questions we ALL ask 'ourselves' in our heads, in those conversations we carry out in our minds, Questions "i wanna talk to a friend the way i talk to myself, because the voice in my head really needs some help". "I know everything ive ever done wrong. That kind of memory wont let me move on." This song has literally become a lifeline for me as i crank it up when the emotions i instinctually hold in (partly due to that's just how i am, and partly raised during the 'boys dont cry' decades) get to much and i need an outlet.
When I was in drug and alcohol rehab we each had a white board above our bed. The most common thing I had written was "I wouldn't talk to a friend the way I talk to myself" It helped me battle the voice in my head that's always putting me down. So grateful for this song🖤
We're our own worst enemy. This song has the most meaning to me than any song that I've ever heard. While I haven't gone through what you have, it's a constant battle inside my head. I usually come out to the positive outcome but the conversation that goes on in my head every time I have to make a decision is just...fffffffffffuck man.
He is saying “ I wouldn’t talk to a friend the way I talk to myself” so he means all of the negative things he tells himself that turning his life to hell or to a deep depression he wouldn’t want to talk to them that same way and wouldn’t want to hurt them as he hurts himself.
Dead By April - Memory In Flames - Take this life Dead By April - Losing You In Flames - I Am Above Dead By April - Stronger Sabaton - Lion From The North
I’ve been recommending Dead by April to him and Alex Hefner (who loves melody in metalcore) for like a year now. lol They’re literally right up their alley, but if you’re not paying them via patreon, it probably ain’t gonna happen. Dead by April are one of the catchiest metalcore/electronicore bands out there. Literally anything off their first three albums is amazing. Not a fan of their newer stuff.
I wouldn't talk to a friend the way I talk to myself basically means he knows he has an unhealthy relationship with himself. His thoughts are tearing himself apart and he's stating that he respects others more than himself.

He says I wouldn’t not I wanna talk to a friend the way I talk to myself. He wouldn’t talk to a friend going through depression the way he talks to himself. It’s a perspective on depression that’s very true. No one would try to help a depressed loved one by talking to them the way a depressed person talks to themselves.
Hey brother, he's saying he (wouldn't) talk to a friend like he's talking to himself. He's broken and angry with himself. He's not giving himself empathy, but he would help someone else if they were going through it.

I'm a huge fan of slaves thank you so much for doing this reaction video! This song resonated deeply for me personally. What I took from it was I would never talk to someone the way I talk to myself meaning we look at ourselves in a much darker view most of the time then we should. I think it was saying that we should be better to ourselves like we are to others therein why they would say I wouldn't talk to a friend the way I talk to myself. That's just my take on it I liked your take as well which was truly deep and personal as well! Keep on doing what you're doing! 🥰🤗💪

He's saying the way he talks to himself i.e negative, puts himself down, curses himself, he would never do that to a friend. So why talk to yourself that way? Which is what is depressed folk do.
Big shoutout to my brother DLJ for this request on Patreon!! Appreciate you always family.

the 2nd verse is the best when Matt says "i spent the next five lines asking bad question" then proceeds to do so
It hits SO fuckin hard man. The end of the first verse as well "I could never be ashamed of you homie" 😭😭😭
He is saying “ I wouldn’t talk to a friend the way I talk to myself” so he means all of the negative things he tells himself that turning his life to hell or to a deep depression he wouldn’t want to talk to them that same way and wouldn’t want to hurt them as he hurts himself.
Thanks my guy that was bugging me
Gibby, my guy, Slaves is the band for you. These boys match your energy, heavy.
Old slaves (Jonny Craig) was really underrated and not given enough credit. Check out his new band old flames...might sig that too.

Honestly one of the best albums I've heard in a while.
I wouldn't talk to a friend the way I talk to myself basically means he knows he has an unhealthy relationship with himself. His thoughts are tearing himself apart and he's stating that he respects others more than himself.
Amazing take my friend. I always interpreted it as “I’d never speak more negatively or more brutally than how I talk to or about myself”
Posted this in a reply to someone here.. but wanted to make it my own post as well...
