★ 🇨🇭Cab ride along lake Biel, Cornaux - Basel, Switzerland [2018]

- On this trip, we're travelling from Cornaux to Olten along the Jura foot railway, a line along the Jura mountains, then continuing on to Basel where the locomotive is parked. Before this video starts, the locomotive was used to bring an empty oil train to Cornaux, where it will be filled at a refinery in the neighbouring town Cressier.
Interesting is the one track section not long after the start of the video, which is in fact the only single track section of this major east - west railway line. By 2025, the SBB plans on replacing this track section with a dually tracked tunnel, so we have to enjoy it while we can. See SBB Video • Kapazitätsausbau, Lige...
Also interesting: after Tuscherz, the line used to continue along lake Biel to Biel, until the Vingelz Tunnel was built and opened in 1969. My hope is to try and capture the old path of the train on video someday so we can relive what it might have been like to travel there by train.
Another point of interest: between Hägendorf & Wangen bei Olten a new siding was constructed for a company that was relocated out of Olten. The siding cost around 2.4 million Francs. If you watch my cabride along here from 2014, you'll notice that the siding is not there: • ★ 🇨🇭Cab ride Langendor...
There are a few interesting trains and locomotives to see too - including the new train from the SOB, parked in Solothurn and a new SBB Hybrid shunting locomotive by Alstom that should be replacing the Am 841.
In case any of you are asking yourselves what the male voice is communicating, here is a brief explanation:
Sifa is the name of the German system that checks whether the driver is conscious or not. First a sign appears on the screen, requiring the driver to release the pedal. If the driver doesn't react (say he or she was looking elsewhere), then the acoustic warning "sifa" sounds. If there is still no reaction, the emergency brakes are applied.
"Störung" means that there is a problem that the driver should pay attention to. Most of these locomotives always have some sort of little problem, so its normal to hear that sound whenever you start one up. The problems vary in degrees - some problems are quite superficial while others could mean that the locomotive is no longer drivable until the problem is addressed.

Sehr schöner Stummfilm 🎉
Sehr nett.
Thank you for explaining “Sifa” I supposed that he had something to do with the engineers awareness but I also thought that the three loud beeps you hear on some videos was the wake up call as well. Great video of an “engine-light” move.
The tracks in Switzerland are so smooth. Here in the United States tracks are bumpy, trains rocking back and forth, horns blaring, smoke belching and bells ringing.
Hahaha :-)
sehr bisondere Fahrt. Danke schön!.
How many people ever notice the Spitfire Aeroplane on the roof just before Grenchen Sud station on the right hand side? P.S Good video
Thanks
Very good journey with plenty to see on the way. Thank you
magnifique video . merci pour ces 90 minutes.
Xavier THOMAS Merci :)
Vídeo muy bueno. Gracias.
Thank you for posting this - with a map and station information. I lived in Cornaux and Nods from 2006 to 2013 and frequently travelled this line.
John Raggett You're welcome. It's sad that part of it will be going underground...

Quite a trip, loved the scenery, and the strangeness of the buildings in Switzerland!!!!

Merci .
Thanks from a hitchhiker! :-)
Bravo!!!merci😉
A very interesting video. Basel RB covers an amazingly large area. It must be a long walk back to base from some of the parking positions!
Thank you. Yeah, it can be! Though often when you park a train, you take the locomotive and park it somewhere that might be closer.
@Dr Moriarty hahaha..
Superb run. I am amazed how extensive the railway infrastructure is around Basel. It certainly puts what we have in the UK to shame. Wishing you a happy Christmas. Looking forward to more from you in 2019. 👍🏼
Thank you! Yeah, I love how many sidings there are over here, however a lot of locations are being deactivated due to the low frequency of traffic. Merry Christmas & God bless.
it is true that the Swiss network is very developed and very effective. I am french and during my last trip in the liverpool and manchester area, i found the british network very interesting, even if during peak hours some trains are overloaded and delayed. (thank google traduction)happy christmas
Happy Christmas to you too 👍🏼@@flowerking3848

Excelente video!!
Merci :)
I saw Breitling watch warehouse/ showroom and factory? Wow.

Another brilliant video!
Merci beaucoup!
The strangest ad at 1hr 17 min. I hope I don't have nightmares tonight. Whoa!
Dr Moriarty There goes my income X-D
It's ok. I also use ad blockers, because as you say, advertising can be ridiculously over the top and annoying.
My ad featured the Muppets singing about Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition or some such thing. There goes both my dinner AND a good night's sleep.
Nice video. Where does the narrow gauge tracks, the ones we saw on the way, go to? I assume they end up in the hills.
One thing I've wondered, the speed limit signs like at 40:54, you've got three there, 125/95/100. I presume they're for different categories of train? IS 125 for tilting trains, and 95/100 for freight and passenger?
Correct. And the sign at 42:33 is where you need to be travelling that speed.
Hi! I just recently discovered you website and the wonderful videos you have filmed. I love them and hope you intend to film more from time to time - will you, I hope ??? Warmest regards, Dana.
Hi Dana. Thanks for your friendly comment. Yes, at the moment I'm making videos on a weekly basis. Glad you like them! Thanks for checking in!
Great video. Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and everyone! From Russia.
PS. What do the constantly sounding words mean: zi-fa, shturum?
Thanks, merry Christmas to you too!

top wie immer
Great vid, thx for sharing...What kind of train is this, commuter, freight...?How many cars were connected? Thx
Thank you. At the beginning I've started including a picture of the train, along with text about the train. As I wrote, it was just the locomotive.
What was the locomotive fault as you departed from Olten? It sounded like it was being rather uncooperative to drive.
zoqaeski It was a pneumatic problem that didn't really make sense. Opening and closing a valve fixed the problem.

Those TRAXX make some odd noises don't they. That creaking noise is from the suspension isn't it?
I don't recall hearing the suspension but what you can hear in the corners are the wheel flanges against the tracks. I find the noises coming from the auxillary power converters rather annoying though.
Is that mixed gauge track at Niederbipp around 52:45? And the new loco at 1:02:30 just as you're passing Wangen?
Nice gauge hehe :)
AndreiTupolev Yes and yes. The normal gauge continues about 2km along the narrow gauge line for a siding.
One question for you.......at each signal mast or signal bridge there are two or four square pads located between the rails spaced about two meters apart. Are those detectors for the central train control to affirm train location and speed?
No, they transmit information on signal status, gradient, speed restrictions and so on, to the locomotive which processes the information in relation to the train length, braking capacity, etc to accurately monitor the whether the driver's actions are sufficient.
Train location is monitored either with axle counters near signals (with yellow boxes next to the track) or track sections that are isolated that detect current when the left and right tracks are electrically connected by the axles of a train.
Darth Vader lives! In the suspension/damping system of class 430 locos.
Did the loco or a close vehicle in the train have a wheel flat or a worn wheel profile causing hunting of an axle? There was a lot of banging on what I assume is continuous track.
Brian Cooper This was actually an Re 482 / Br 185 solo. I think one of the wheels had a flat spot.

super video.,,.................
LZ1CLR Thanks!
Nice video! Was just wondering about your user name? Are you a woman train operator in Switzerland? If so, good stuff! Only wish it was a nice sunny day when you made the video. Merry Christmas from Manitoba Canada!
Thanks! No actually Lori refers to Lori Peters, a drummer that I'm a fan of. I also think its awesome seeing women drive trains. The number is increasing over here. Definitely will have some good weather videos too!
Merry Christmas & God bless.
Wow! What else.
rabde1041 merci vielmal =)
Muy bueno
brilliant video
bum bum bum…. seems that Re 482 has a "tire" blown down or, as in plain German said :" die Lok hat einen Platten", or not? Very amusing F1 speed use for travelling around in Switzerland . Nice and interesting as usual
Ciao from Alptransit- Luino
By "tire" blown down. Do you mean that it has a flat spot? It does sound rhythmic and rotational.
, @@captbob3144 Its correct, it should not be so an extended/deep spot as it has the tendency to disappear/be covered by other noise, with the increase of speed
ciao Alptransit-Luino
Thank-You @@GEOONTUBE my train knowledge is lacking.
skvělé/super
Nice video. Camera Sony ?
Thanks. Lumix Fz1000.
Excuse my ignorance, can you tell me what the signs with black H or T on a circular white background mean? and also the square signs with diagonal alternating black and white lines.
Square signs, diagonal start, straight end of curve. H, upcoming stop, T Telephone I think. Where was the T?
The 'T ' was not in this video , I thought I would ask while asking about the others :) Thanks for reply

Was it not economical just to leave the engine with its cars being filled at the refinery? It feels like a long way to send an engine back without pulling something to make it worthwhile.
Apparently the cost of the parking spot was higher than the return trip.
@@lorirocks777 wow. That's really interesting. Watched a ton of your videos. It is just breath taking. Thanks for all the videos.
@@JoeKaton Thanks a lot. Since recording this video, a deal has been made for parking locomotives in Cornaux, so this isn't as common anymore.
@@lorirocks777 very cool.
Cressier is the place of scheuchzer rail works
Great video and what is the maximum speed of this cab?
100km/h
ME. PUEDEN DECIR. A QUE VELOCIDAD ANDA EL TREN .GRACIAS. DESDE COLOMBIA. SALUDOS...
Now, why drive back, rather than put the loco in tow on the next train back? Unless they also need to transport the driver back to Basel.
Locomotive rental is expensive, so you have to do as much with 1 loco as possible. Sometimes the next train back might be a few days later.
@@lorirocks777 We don't really have locomotive 'rental' in this country, though there is leasing, which is a contract for months, usually. Most often used with smaller operators that don't have their own locomotive shops, like industrial railroads or ports. There's also 'power-by-the-hour' agreements, where the lease is for a fee per horsepower-hour produced by the locomotive.
What were those sniffling, snorting noises coming from the cab? Was the engineer clearing his sinuses; gargling; possessed by the Devil; being strangled?
the train driver is probably playing with himself
the driver might have his girlfriend with him
Those sounds come from suspension when the bogies turn. Under the locomotive are big bars what connects the locomotive frame to bogies. Is not center pin in the bogies like in waggons. So is big sustensions mounted the side of the bogies what connects to the frame and those makes these sounds. These sounds are only on Traxx locomotives.
the driver might have his girlfriend with him
because driver are Darth Vader!!!
There are some strange sounds in the background like someone has been drowning all the way
Typical for this locomotive type
Moin aus dem Norden.Linksverkehr wie in England...
1:24:52 Spiderman on the roof 😀
It is flat spot on one weel? has that beet sound.
47:40 class 560 motor car running on its own?
Yes.. probably heading to Yverdon
Min 1.12.55: Maybe bad frequency?
💓💓💓👍👍👍😍
Was bedeutet Sifa o. ä. ?
With no freight behind you the driving must be easier than with stuff behind you.
You have to pedal much less LOL
was wonder the first few minutes with what sound like Darth Vader driving.
Everything looks clean, tidy and efficient. Hate the Shreddie advert though. That mans voice is so bloody irritating. He sounds like a millenial.
The Swiss like mechanical things such as trains, watches, and bank vaults.
What is that horrible noise during the Video...it sounds like Darth Vader on a Respirator or Something! It's
Not a very good sound that is for sure. And it's impossible to Ignore.
I assume you're referring to the sound of the wheel flanges against the rails.
Or do you mean the sound when the locomotive accelerates? That's a typical sound for that locomotive type.
Is Darth Vader driving this train?
That's like the 5th time someone has asked this 😂 It's the sound of the traction converters.
